I'm a wordsmith, Miami native, mom of two boys and a die-hard Floridian with one pair of closed-toed shoes. We hit the road when the school bell rings to explore everything from citrus tours and sandy shores to toddler-friendly fun and teen-approved thrills. If you're looking for the perfect Florida for your family, you'll find hundreds of ideas right here - from a mom who knows.

Museum of Discovery & Science Opens new Flight Exhibit this Weekend

October 08, 2009

This weekend, get set to take to the sky at the Museum of Discovery & Science in sunny Fort Lauderdale! It’s the grand opening of Aviation Station Phase Two and the fun starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Once inside, you’ll find all kinds of interactive exhibits like the Max Flight Motion Simulator where you can climb right in and pilot the aircraft of your choice and do a a super cool combat flight program. With 360-degree pitch, roll and spin technology, believe me, your adrenaline will be racing!
There will also be cockpit simulators where you can practice your piloting skills by  “flying” the LockHeed Martin F/35 Joint Strike fighter, the newest jet fighter now being developed; the Edge 540, an aerobatic single-engine aircraft used in the worldwide Red Bull Air Race; and the Vought F4U Corsair, argued to be one of the finest aircrafts of WWII. (I know my weekend pilot/history buff husband will LOVE this!)

Once you’ve had your share of piloting planes, head over to the Interactive Radio Control Helicopter Station and try flying a real, radio-controlled helicopter. Once you’ve mastered that, stop by the Get It Under Control exhibit and maneuver a model airplane.
Phase One of this exhibit opened about three years ago, so the Museum and its fans (like me) are super excited about this Phase Two opening this Saturday.

Here’s the rundown of the weekend’s festivities for Oct. 10-11, 2009:

Aviation Creation                                                                   1 p.m. & 4 p.m.
Design and produce your very own paper aircraft!  Learn about the different types of paper airplanes, build your favorite and then test fly it through the Museum!

Aviation Demonstration                                                        1:30 p.m. & 3:30 p.m.
During this demonstration, discover the science behind flight and find out how humans have embraced these scientific principles to create aviation marvels.

Meet an Original Tuskegee Airman of WWII                     Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Don’t miss your chance to meet retired World War II hero Lt. Col. Leo Gray, an original Tuskegee Airman of WWII and hear first hand WWII experiences

RC Hobbies                                                                            10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Join RC Hobbies as they fly remote-control helicopters throughout the Museum.

Ionosphere Club                                                                     10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Stop by the Ionosphere Club’s booth and experiment with flight and air traffic control simulators, examine a model airport city and make balsam wood airplane gliders.

Miami
Seaplane Tours                                                          10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Miami Seaplane Tours will be bringing a seaplane that will be on display in the Museum’s atrium. Stop by, check it out and find out how a plane is capable of landing in water!

Avenger Navy Flight Instructor/Flight 19 Search/Rescue Coord.           Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Meet David White and receive tips from the Avenger Navy Flight Instructor and hear first-hand experiences of search and rescue missions with the U.S. Navy.

And don't forget -- there is so much to see and do at the Museum of Discovery & Science. They are home to sharks, alligators, Mars Rovers, bats, and so many fun, interactive exhibits. Oh, and a 5-story IMAX theater -- so plan to spend the day.
