The boys enjoying bowling on Little Brother's Day Credit: Jill Martin, family expert, VISIT FLORIDA
I have to tell you, Little Brother's Day is not really a holiday, per se. But we celebrate it every year in June, followed two weeks later by Big Brother's Day.
This all started three years ago when my little one was running short on patience as I was opening Mother's Day cards and gifts. He exclaimed, "When's MY day?" When I explained the answer was his birthday in December, he refuted the fact with 'today's not your birthday!' And so, Little Brother Day was born - right along with Big Brother Day. (I think he may be a budding lawyer as his negotiating skills are remarkable!)
It's actually a super fun day for the entire family. Little Brother Devon gets to be 'king for the day' basically. From morning 'til bedtime, he gets to do whatever he wants to do, within reason. (Of course, we use subliminal messaging for ideas that work best or are affordable.) He loves to go bowling, so we all go bowling. He loves hot dogs, so we all eat hot dogs at the famous Arbetter's Hot Dogs. He also likes to pick out ONE toy, which he knows is limited to a certain dollar amount. His big brother has to be NICE to him all day, too. That is the biggest obstacle but it all works out since his turn is coming up soon.
I have girlfriends who have joined in the celebration with their kids, choosing whichever month works best for them. We have only one June birthday in our entire big family so this works out well for us. So, join in the fun and celebrate those little and big brothers - or little and big sisters - even though every day is all about them as we moms know all too well.Â
