Block The Sun Not The Fun!

In honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, here are some easy and sensible tips for keeping your kids safe (and you too!) while enjoying the great Florida outdoors:
  • Enjoy the sun early or late in the day when its rays are less intense
  • Don't burn
  • Just say no to tanning booths! The intensity of the UV radiation received may be 15 times that of the sun.
  • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day (Neutrogena is great for sensitive skin)
  • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours.
  • Protect your kisser - wear lip balm
  • Wear a hat – a broad brim is best
  • Protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses
  • Keep newborns out of the sun as they’re too young for sunscreen
  • Children over the age of six months should wear sunscreen daily
  • Beach umbrellas are always a great idea
  • Examine yourself head-to-toe every month
  • See your doctor every year for a head-to-toe skin exam
The Skin Cancer Foundation is encouraging everyone to have a head-to-toe check in the month of May. (I had mine!) They are even providing free screenings via their mobile “Road To Healthy Skin” tour. Check out their website for dates and cities.

So slather up, slip on a hat and wear your shades. Block the sun - not the fun!
