Beaches & Adventure Insider

Lauren Tjaden

Hang gliding is my passion, and in 2006, I helped the U.S. Women's Hang Gliding Team win silver in the World Championships. An author, ultimate adventure lover, beach bunny and sand snob, I've visited almost every beach in Florida and can't wait to explore more. Join me as I flip-flop across the Sunshine State, sharing the softest sand, sweetest shores and a boatload of adventure.

Today's Key West event guaranteed to float ur flip-flops- but not ur boat! #Florida @thefloridakeys http://t.co/UbWjcM0n

Trouble in “Turtle-City”

Okay, this is definitely NOT a loggerhead turtle -- but it's one of the few turtle pics I have. Credit: Paul Tjaden

Little loggerhead turtles are born with powerful instincts to crawl towards the brightest light they see. Traditionally, the brightest light has been the ocean – but nowadays, car lights on highways near the beach often confuse the little fellows. Sadly, sometimes they end up on the road instead of gliding into the waves, and their population is considered endangered.

The good news is that you can help, and have a rockin’ experience at the same time. From July through September, under the stars at Crandon or Haulover Beach, you can help safely guide hatchlings to the ocean with the Miami-Dade Parks Sea Turtle Awareness Program. The adventure lasts about an hour and a half, and is advertised as being easy and open to all ages. Here’s a link to my blog dubbed “Turtle Trouble” that explains more about it.

There’s more good news, too. You can share this Sunshine State adventure with the folks you care about – something that’s sweet as a springtime strawberry for you and sweet for Florida’s economy, too – when you visit ShareaLittleSunshine.org. You’ll be able to send your peeps a cool video invitation, forward super deals to them and will even be entered to win your own vacation.
