A Florida fishing expert shares his secrets for catching bonefish.
Weighing in at an average of six to eight pounds, with the largest of Florida bonefish barely tipping the scales at 15 pounds, it would seem hard to believe these fish are considered by many to be one of the most highly sought after game fish in Florida — until you try fishing for one. There's nothing quite like one of these shiny silver bullets running off 100 yards of your line in a single burst. Known for their spectacular, blistering runs and sheer strength, these fish are guaranteed to become one of your favorite hook-ups. Rarely eaten, bonefish continue to be a popular fish for anglers of all skill levels.
Known to cruise in shallow water and grass flats while hunting for crustaceans, bonefish are plentiful in warm Florida waters along much of South Florida's coastline. They are particularly popular from Miami to the Florida Keys where they are found year round. They can be caught in as little as six inches of water, though they spend plenty of time in deeper waters too. Adult bonefish tend to hang out in deeper channels, allowing you to sneak up on these otherwise wary fish.
It's always wise to exercise caution when pursuing bonefish — because they can end up being downright addictive.
