Close Beach to Ocala
Asked by on November 22, 2009
Q: Where is the closest beach fromocala, florida, that is, on the west coast (Gulf of Mexico)? andhow would you get there?
A: Hi,

The closest beach to Ocala is Daytona Beach on the Atlantic, at 1 hour 32 minutes and 78 miles. Go there if you want waves; go to the gulf if you like calm waters. (I wasn’t sure if you preferred the gulf or just assumed it was closer.)

Hernando Beach (1 hour 27 minutes and 82 miles) is the closest “beach” on the gulf side, but the name is a little misleading. It’s very marshy - -not what I think you are imagining.

The closest real gulf beaches are in the Tampa Bay area. Tampa Bay isn’t a horrible drive from Ocala – about two hours. The good news is the beaches there are really nice. Here’s a link to my favorite VISIT FLORIDA video about the beaches there. It gives an overview and shots of the area beaches so it’s very useful.

Here is a link to MapQuest directions. (I originally copied the directions for you but they came out way too long and too messy with all the possible destinations – this way you won’t get confused.)

Have a great time!

Quiet, Quaint (But Interesting) Beach
Asked by Crystal on November 22, 2009
Q: My husband and I are planning on a 3 night stay in Florida in mid-March. We would like the beach, but nothing busy. Something like a quaint village with lots to see, good food and easy to walk around. Any suggestions?
A: Hi Crystal,

How about Captiva Island? It features a quirky little village, an award-winning beach, plus unusual restaurants and unusual shops -- and it would be hard to find any place that’s quieter. I could go on and on, but it’s probably better if you just read this VISIT FLORIDA article about it and also check out info about it on the Sanibel/Captiva Islands Visitors Bureau website.

Amelia Island is an Atlantic-side destination that you might like (by Jacksonville). Check out this article about it.

Have a great (quiet but interesting) time!

Beaches with LIfeguards
Asked by Ron on November 17, 2009
Q: Which florida beaches have lifeguards and during which months?
A: Hi Ron,

I wish I could give you a better answer but, unfortunately, no source exists that identifies all of the beaches in Florida (or the U.S.) that provide lifeguards -- never mind the hours and seasons.

The United States Lifesaving Association has a certification program for lifeguard programs listed on their website, and the communities listed will have quality lifeguard protection, so that will give you a place to start. You’ll still need to check the beaches you intend to visit.

Sorry.

February Beach Resort
Asked by Craig Willchuk on November 15, 2009
Q: I am a first time traveler to Florida and would like to know what the temperatures are like in February and where the nice beach resorts are.
A: Hi Craig,

Here’s a link to a site with all kinds of weather averages for different Florida destinations in different months. Hmm, nice beach resorts. You’ve got a bunch to choose from but you might consider a more southerly location since you’re coming in February.

So much of your decision is going to be based on personal taste. If you want glitz and glamour head to Miami. Consider Martin County beaches (a bit north of Palm Beach) if you want seclusion and no high rises. The Atlantic beaches will have waves; if you like calm water go to the gulf side. Longboat Key (by Sarasota) has AWESOME resorts and beaches. And then you’ve got all those great destinations by Fort Myers (like Captiva and Cayo Costa).

I suggest you surf the VISIT FLORIDA site and watch some videos, then see what appeals to you.

Cheap Beachfront
Asked by Bill Spittell on November 13, 2009
Q: We are looking to vacation in Florida for a week in January or February. WE ARE NOT RICH and are hoping you could direct us to affordable BEACHFRONT accomodations. Any help would be appreciated! Sincerely, Bill & Amanda
A: Hi Bill and Amanda,

Unfortunately, I understand not being rich!

So, here’s the link to the “deals” page on VISIT FLORIDA, which is where you should start. Next, check the beaches section in the search engine and hit “enter.” Just shy of 250 “deals” come up.  You’ll find offers like the ones on Bayview Plaza Waterfront Resort’s page (on St. Pete Beach, which is not exactly shabby) with rates from $69.

Some deals are better than others, obviously, but just surf the areas you are interested in visiting. And call them; ask what they can do for you.

Also, you might want to check out the question that was asked right before yours. It has a few tips on affordable fun.

Good luck!

Cheap Florida Fun
Asked by Vicki on November 11, 2009
Q: My husband and I were thinking about just taking off to Florida for about a week. We would like to spend as little as possible. Any ideas?
A: Hi Vicki,

Yes, indeed; I do have ideas! The weather is really nice here right now.

You might consider a beach camping trip. That could be really romantic and fun. Check out this article by David McRee, VISIT FLORIDA’s previous beach insider, about possible destinations.

Also, anything you do that is low tech – like biking, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, hiking or visiting state parks -- will be pretty inexpensive. A beach vacation in the south where you go snorkeling would be awesome. If you mountain bike, go to Santos. I truly think it is one of the coolest adventures in Florida. Here’s an article I wrote about it.

Don’t feel like camping? Just type “deals” into the VF search engine. There are currently just shy of 1200 bargains on everything from rooms to activities to more.

Have fun (on the cheap!).

Christmas Hotel Reservations
Asked by Andrea on November 03, 2009
Q: I'm planning a flydrive over Christmas and the New Year, would I need to book hotels ahead or are they readily available?
A: Hi Andrea,

The two weeks around Christmas and the New Year are busy, so I'd recommend booking ahead. Depending where you plan on going and what your tastes are, you might be okay, but I wouldn't risk it.

Beaches that are Close to the Airport
Asked by Lynn on October 31, 2009
Q: We'd like to find a beach that is very close to a Florida airport so we don't need to rent a car. Can you suggest a beach area that would have airport shuttle service
A: Hi Lynn,

How about Tampa? My mother and were just talking about the great experiences we’ve both had flying out of and to there. The Clearwater/St. Pete’s area is just 30-40 minutes from it. Here’s a link listing different modes of shuttles from Tampa to various locations (including the beach).

If you scroll down through my questions (hit “view all”) you’ll soon come to one titled “St. Pete's Beaches and Family Fun?” that has links to videos and info about area beaches.

Actually, you have lots of choices. Jacksonville is another option. You could go to its beaches or even to Amelia Island, only 30 minutes from the airport. Miami International Airport, located a mere 7 miles west of Miami Beach, offers another option, and Pensacola will get you close to those beautiful NW Florida beaches and their white sand.

So much depends on what you are looking for in a beach – waves or calm water or solitude or action, shopping or nightlife or something family-friendly. Follow the links I’ve included in each location and you’ll get lots of articles, videos and info about hotels, etc, about each area, so you can figure out which sounds like you.

Have a great time,

Coolest Trawler Stops from Sarasota to Sanibel
Asked by sam on October 29, 2009
Q: we are renting a trawler to go from sarasota to sanibel , what are the best stops to see ?
A: Hi Sam,

Wow – what a cool idea!

I certainly have many favorite beaches in that area – for instance, Siesta Key in Sarasota – but the gentleman I spoke with at Siesta Key Marina this morning explained to me the problem is that trawlers are too big for many of the marinas, including the one there. He said you are probably starting from Marina Jacks and renting from Chitwood Charters and ending up in Plantation Marina in Sanibel.

Here’s a link to the Waterways Guide, which can give you guidance on marinas on your way. You can find more exact advice with this article that highlights some of the stops that would be suitable and fun for you on your journey.

Wishing you smooth seas and an abundance of joy,

Lauren

Nice Beach and Swimming for Few $
Asked by Todd on October 25, 2009
Q: I'm seeking just swimming and nice beach, lower cost would be good. Where would one go in Tampa/gulf region?Keys?
A: Hi Todd,

The Florida Keys are great, but the area is not renowned for its beaches, with the exception of Bahia  Honda, which is absolutely brilliant. You could stay in Marathon in one of the Fifties-style hotels, which are not expensive and that (I think) are kind of cool. I paid about $50 a night for room that literally overlooked the ocean last November.

If you are considering the gulf in general, NW Florida often has really low-cost options. Since you mentioned Tampa, though, I assume you have the southern/central gulf coast in mind.

If you’re going to be in the Tampa area, how about visiting the Clearwater and St. Pete beaches? They totally rock. Scroll down a few questions on my page (hit “view all questions”) to one that says “St. Pete's Beaches and Family Fun?” It gives links to videos and info about the area and all the individual beaches there.

Here’s a link to places to stay in Clearwater/St. Pete. Prices vary wildly, but if you stay in some place like the EconoLodge it starts to be pretty reasonable. Here’s also a link to current deals in the area. You might be able to stay in a really cool place for not much money if you go at the right time. (Hint: hit the “view all deals” button. There are so many great areas featured, like Bonita Springs or Siesta Key that you just might want to choose.)

Have a great time.

Clearwater Camping
Asked by Nan Karnes-Gauthier on October 25, 2009
Q: We're looking to rent a camper Clearwater, St. Petersbug are our first choices Orlando or anywhere that rent campers on site or cabins, excluding KOA sites. Some where were they allow dogs.
A:

Hi Nan,

Here is a link to an article with lots of info about renting cabins in Florida State Parks, including contact info. They are divided by regions, so, for instance, central Florida would be where you would look for cabins by Orlando. Lake Louisa Park is one option, near where I live in Clermont. The SW region offers Myakka River State Park and Cayo Costa. With more homework I found out that dogs are allowed in both parks, but not in the cabins, so that may rule them out for you.

Here’s a link to Florida Campgrounds, which literally lists hundreds of sites. It gives you options all over the state. For instance, the Fun and Sun in Sarasota rents Rvs on site. I don’t know if you’re looking for a vacation rental or something for the winter, but you should be able to find someplace that suits your needs.

I hope you’re happy campers!

Daytona Beach November Weather and Events
Asked by Kathy Duchesneau on October 22, 2009
Q: Hi, My husband and I will be visiting Daytona Beach in mid-November. Can you tell us what to expect the weather to be like, and are there any big happenings the week of 11/15? Thanks!
A:

Hi Kathy,

The weather will be nice. Here's a link to a site with average highs and lows, record highs and lows, average precip. and lots more. Daytona is the second location down on the page.

There's an NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament that starts on Nov. 21 that might fit into your schedule. Here's a link to the Daytona Beach Official Vacation site and their calendar of events, which is here (and includes info about the basketball).

My own suggestions would be to take a surfing lesson, go for a drive on the beach and, of course, visit Daytona International Speedway. I drove a NASCAR there in the Richard Petty Driving Experience, and it was truly one of the coolest adventures I've ever experienced. I've also included a link to the Visit Daytona website. It has lots of links to places you can visit and things to do.

Remember Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa aren't too far down the coast, either. Here's a link to events in Cocoa -- there are lots! Here's a link to Space Center events. There are lots of those, too.

Have a blast.

Sanibel Island Getaway in January
Asked by dot on October 19, 2009
Q: my husband and 12 yr. old son are planning a trip to Sanibel Island in the third week of January 2010. DO you have any insider tips on the best place to stay and visit. We LOVE to have a single family house on the beach.Crowds we are not fans of. What is the weather like in January? thanks for whatever information you can offer us.
A: Hi Dot,
Oooh, you’ll like it there!

The gentleman at ReMax of the Islands that I just spoke with told me that unfortunately, by city law, you cannot rent a house on Sanibel for less than 28 days. However, you can rent “cottages” at a variety of places. You can also rent condos on the beach, but of course they are not as private as a house would be. Here’s a link to a list of a slew of places to stay there. Also, you can rent houses on nearby Captiva, so you might consider that.

Here’s a link to the Sanibel Beaches website, which has lots of videos, photos and info, so you can get a great feel for the area and see what attractions appeal most to you. I personally loved taking a boat eco-tour there with a small group of friends and my hubby. We spotted dolphin, went to a secluded island, and shelled and swam on the beach. It was very quiet, laid-back, and perfect for my mood.
You should definitely check out the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to an incredible array of exotic birds and plants, alligators, etc. You can drive, bike or hike through it, or take a narrated tram or canoe tour. There’s a video about taking a “birding by canoe tour” on the site I gave you, which I didn’t do but looks fun.

Fishing, sailing, snorkeling all are popular. I assume you know that Sanibel is legendary for shelling!
The average temp in Fort Myers in January is min F 53.2, max F 74.4, avg. F 63.8, and the average precipitation is 1.84 inches.

Have fun,

A: Hi Frances,
As I understand it, you cannot. Here is the Sun Pass website (the pass that is used here). I tried to call them but they are closed on the weekend. Their toll free telephone number is 1-888-865-5352 if you want to give them a buzz tomorrow and make sure.

Beautiful, Kid Friendly Beach Close to Disney
Asked by Angela on October 14, 2009
Q: Hello! My husband and I are planning a trip to DisneyWorld/Orlando with our 3 year old and 6 year old at the end of April. After Disney in 3 days, we would like to drive to a beach no further than a couple hours. Can you recommend a beautiful, but very kid friendly beach? Do you recommend the gulf coast? We went to Clearwater and stayed at the Hilton on the beach, and was not very impressed. Any hotels you can recommend at certain beaches would be great, too! Thanks!
A: Hi Angela,
The gulf is a good idea, though if you like waves you should go to the Atlantic coast. Certainly lots of kids are always on the beach at Cocoa (the closest beach to Orlando), but I thought since yours are so young the gulf might be more suitable.
How about Siesta Key in Sarasota? It’s a little over two hours from Kissimmee. Its gradual slopes, shallow waters, lifeguards, playground, gentle waves, fine white sand and translucent waters make it ideal for kids, and in 2009, Dr. Beach even named it the number two beach in America. Here’s a video (about snorkeling there) that will give you an idea of what it’s like.
Here’s a list of hotels in Siesta Key Beach, with detailed ratings and reviews by many people. It should give you a clear picture of what each place is like and the experiences people have had there.
I also wrote my friend who stayed in a hotel there and asked what she thought. Here is what she said:
"I've only stayed at one hotel on Siesta and we loved it -- across the street from the beach and probably the best spot for strolling and nightlife. It's Siesta Beach Resort & Suites. I think the name probably makes it sound fancier than it is, but they do have suite rooms with kitchen, small living room, master suite, etc. Here are some pics. You can see it's not upscale (outdated decor, etc), but we liked it."
I’m keeping my toes crossed that you have the best beach holiday ever.

Bithlo Vacation Villa
Asked by Deb on October 12, 2009
Q: We are looking to rent a vacation villa near Bithlo Motorsports park for a couple of days. Anything you can recommend?
A: Hi Deb,
It turns out that’s not the easiest question to answer (as you may have already figured out). Though Bithlo has an Orlando address, many of the great vacation villas and hotels are close to Disney, which is a whopping forty five minutes from the park – certainly not something you want to drive every day.

I did find a place called Big Oaks Ranch in Chuluota (about 25 minutes away), which I am not sure is what you had in mind but looks interesting. (Think air-conditioned log cabin, huge, quiet cattle ranch that caters to celebrities.)

In University Park, which is not too far (only 15 minutes), the Hampton Inn Orlando, ( tel: 407-282-0029‎, address: 3450 Quadrangle Blvd, Orlando, FL 32817) has by far the best customer reviews of the hotels in the area. It also has a pool, nice restaurant and other amenities, but doesn’t offer villas.

I also called a bunch of villa rental places by Orlando, but most have none on the east side of Orlando, since it tends to be more of a corporate area. The closest villa rentals I found were through Florida Vacation Rentals, about 30 minutes from Bithlo.

I hope this is of some help. Sorry I couldn’t find exactly what you were looking for any closer.

Closest Gulf Beach to Orlando
Asked by nichol on October 10, 2009
Q: We are going to be staying at Disney ina week and want to go to a beach on the gulf side what is the nearest beach and how far is it? Is it nice? Are there places to stay there for a night reaasonable?
A: Hi Nichol,
The Clearwater area is as close as any, since you can drive on I-4 almost the whole way. MapQuest says it’s two hours from Orlando. The good news is that it rocks.

Caladesi Beach (named America's No. 1 beach in 2008) and Fort De Soto Park (which won TripAdvisor's top honors for the second consecutive year in 2009 on the list of the top ten beaches in the U.S.) are a couple of the area’s white-sand beaches. Here’s a video of Caladesi, and here’s one about Fort De Soto that gives an overview of the area beaches, which should be a great guide for you to check out.

Here’s a list of places to stay from Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater. You should be able to find some great bargains right now. Here’s a link to the “hot deals in Clearwater Beach” page on VISIT FLORIDA, which should provide more ideas.

Have fun (you will),

St. Pete's Beaches and Family Fun?
Asked by Lisa on October 09, 2009
Q: My husband, girls(ages 9 and 11)and, I will be visiting the St. Petersburg area at the end of Oct. for the first time. We do not want to spend time in the car. What beaches and attractions are closest and best for our family?
A: Hi Lisa,
NICE destination. St. Petersburg and Clearwater offer 35 miles of white-sand beaches on some eight major barrier islands. Check out this video (it’s only a few minutes) which gives a brief overview of the area beaches so you can all look and see what sounds like your cup of sunshine (busy, quiet, whatever). You don’t need to drive far at all. Look on the map and you’ll see what I mean. (I personally despise sitting in the car so I do understand.)

I like the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Check out the website and what you can do and see there. I would also recommend a sunset celebration at Pier 60.

Also, here’s the Chamber of Commerce site. It has a boatload of things to do under “attractions,” so you can look and figure out what sounds like “you.” A fishing trip might be fun, too, if you like that sort of thing.
I would be very surprised if you don’t totally love the place.

Beach Reunion in January
Asked by Nellie Kaufman on October 08, 2009
Q: We're planning on a family reunion in January. My Dad can't travel over 2 hours from Sebring, FL. Should we head west or east for the best/warmest/most kid-friendly beaches? We don't like the huge touristy areas, and are hoping to rent a house on or near the beach.
A: Hi Nellie,

You have a few really good options.

MapQuest says Siesta Key (on the gulf) is one hour 59 minutes from Sebring, and it is truly lovely. In 2009, Dr. Beach named it the No. 2 beach in America and it’s always near the top of the lists. Here’s a video about snorkeling there.

Here’s a link to places to stay there. Some are hotels but some are bay side cottages, etc.

Longboat Key is in the same area.  (Two hours and five minutes on MapQuest.) It’s very upscale, but also very much about family and quiet. I stayed at the Colony Tennis Resort there and loved it. It offered lots to do -- fishing, shelling, snorkeling, sailing, tennis and more -- but it was not at all crowded. Here’s a video of a place on Longboat Key called “Cannons by the Sea.” It’s an ad but it will give you a good idea of what to expect.

If you head the other way, to the Atlantic, you can also find very quiet beaches. It’s got a different vibe-- no crowds, no lines, no parking meters, no high rises, and pristine beaches. It’s got waves while of course the gulf coast does not.  Here’s an A-Z guide to the beaches there. Ha, I just looked up Stuart on MapQuest and it says it’s one hour and 59 minutes – so it’s going to be a pretty close trip time-wise either coast you choose.

Here’s the Martin County CVB website that will give you lots more info. Here’s a list of places to stay in the area. If you want a house, type “vacation rental Stuart” into Google and you’ll have lots of options. Ditto for Siesta Key, if you can’t find what you’re looking for on the link I gave you.

I just looked up the average temperatures, too, and there is not much difference. I’d just choose based on what you’d like.

Have a great time.

Slow-Pitch Fun and Sun
Asked by Leanna Lowe on October 08, 2009
Q: I have a ladies slo pitch baseball team that would like to travel to Florida for some baseball and a vacation. Does Florida hold any slo pitch tournaments and if so who can I contact for further information. I myself have been to Florida on a few occasions and our team the WWW (wild wacky women) are looking for some sun and fun !! Any help is greatly appreaciated. Thanks Leanna.
A: Hi Leanna,
I want to be a WWW, too!
Hopefully this site will help. It’s the USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association), the official site of and governing body for the USSA Slow Pitch Program.
Go to the slow-pitch page, choose the sport and class (like Slow Pitch Women’s- A or whatever), the state (obviously FL) and the other criteria, then hit submit. It should bring up all the events.
If you want to speak with someone local here’s a link to a baseball group in Kissimmee.

Surfing Christmas in the Sunshine State
Asked by Laura Rice on October 04, 2009
Q: Hi Lauren,We are in our late 40's and have been having fun surfing on longboards that my husband has built here in New England. We are thinking about heading to Florida for Christmas week. We would like to find an area to surf that welcomes beginners. We are not interested in a highly popular/ busy beach because we don't want to be in anyone's way. How about Hutchinson Island area? Any suggestions would be great. Thank you. Laura
A: Hi Laura,
How fun! Hutchinson Island is a good choice. Here's info about surfing in that area.
The area advertises itself as “having the finest surfing on the east coast” but since I have never surfed there I called a local to see what they would say. Blue Planet Dive and Surf Shop (1317B Northwest St. Lucie West Boulevard, Port St. Lucie, 772-871-9122) said the Pepper Park site is really not a surf spot at all, just a beach, that Walton Rocks is fun but has a rocky bottom and nowhere to stay, and that North Jetty would be fun, too, but will definitely be more crowded.
What they DID recommend is a surfing spot called Waveland,” just north of the Marriott at Jensen Beach. They said you could stay at the hotel (I have no idea how nice it is or if it’s what you have in mind) and actually walk from it to surf. They said the second best spot in the area for you to surf would be Jensen Beach, but that it would be more crowded.
You obviously already figured out Martin County beaches also tend towards the quiet side, since you found Hutchinson Island (which borders Martin and St. Lucie County). Here’s an article you can use as a guide to them.
Flagler Beach would work also well. It’s about 30 miles north of Daytona on the Atlantic Coast, is definitely quiet, and it offers the third largest surf break in Florida.
As far as surfing, here’s a link with info and ratings by other surfers for surf spots in south Florida; here’s the same thing for northern Florida. Here’s an article about Florida’s best surf spots with good general info.
Wishing you blue skies and willing waves,
Lauren

Ft. Myers Manatee Swims
Asked by Jim on September 30, 2009
Q: Can you swim with the manatees in the Orange River area near Ft. Myers or off Sanibel Island? My family swam up in Homassassa Springs a few years ago at Captain Jack's and thought it was awesome, but I don't want to drive far from RSW. We go to Sanibel a couple of times a year. We will be there in Dec.09 and then in Feb.10...prime manatee times. Can you help with info? Best Regards, Jim
A: Hi Jim,
Sorry, the Crystal River and Homasassa are the only legal places to swim with our big friends. Here’s info about Lee County Manatee Park in Fort Myers, where you can kayak and admire them – though I know, it’s not quite the same thing.

14-Day Mega-Trip
Asked by Svenja on September 29, 2009
Q: Hi Lauren, my boyfriend and me we booked a 14day holiday in Florida. Well we booked a flight by now. We will be in Miami 27th of january till 2nd of february. I want to see as much of Florida as i can. I have looked already on different sites. We will fly to Miami stay there for about 3 to 4 days. We also want to see Key West, Fort Lauderdale, Everglades and Orlando. In Key West i really want to surprise my boyfriend and book a "oceanside" Bungalow.. Is there any??? Do you have any suggestions what else we have to see?? Activities, nice Beaches, things we really have to see or do??? Good restaurants?? Site where we can rent a car, which is not tooooo expensive... I rather spend my money for adventure... Thanks very very much for some suggestions.
A: Hi Svenja,
There’s a question that I was asked right before yours titled “Side Trip From Miami to ???” that will give you lots of info about Key West, Orlando, etc. , including contact info. Scroll down and check it out.
The things I would absolutely suggest you do is snorkel somewhere in the FL Keys, because they run parallel to North America’s longest living barrier reef, which makes it exceptional. Bahia Honda, which I mentioned in the previous question, is by far the best Keys beach.
As far as the Everglades, the typical thing to do is go out on an airboat. I personally would prefer to go out in a kayak, paddle along quietly and try to spot wildlife; wander through the mangrove swamps and “river-of-grass.” If you do want to go on an airboat, a little, personal company would probably be more fun for you than a big one.
Some of my favorite adventures have included ballooning in Orlando (here’s a link to an article I wrote about it) and driving a NASCAR at the Daytona International Speedway with the Richard Petty Driving Experience. The NASCAR is pricey but I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. Here’s a video of me and the NASCAR – see what you think. Surfing at Cocoa Beach is fun and of course if you have a chance to watch a shuttle launch you MUST do it. I am a hang gliding addict and would advise that you take a tandem flight while in the Orlando area. Here’s a link to a blog I wrote with links to all the places in FL to go hang gliding. It all really depends on your taste. (My hubby thought ballooning was boring while I liked it lots.)
From Key West it would be really cool to fly to the Dry Tortugas in a seaplane and snorkel there for the day. Now THAT would be a surprise for your boyfriend! For places to stay in Key West check out this list. Here’s a place that I thought sounded like “you.” Definitely stay near old-town and Duval Street in any case.
Here’s a car rental place that lets you compare prices with different companies – but I am not an expert in that regard!
Barb Freda was a food and dining expert at VISIT FLORIDA before, and here’s a link to her old stuff. Just scroll through her blogs to find out great places to eat wherever you’re visiting.
Have fun,

Side Trip From Miami to ???
Asked by Sol on September 24, 2009
Q: Dear Lauren,Hi! My boyfriend, me and a couple of married friends are planning a 10 day trip to Miami in mid November. We went there last November, satyed in Miami, went on an air aoat ride in the Everglades, visited Naples and West palm Beach, but this year we wanted to do a different thing. I thought we could rent a car and head north to Tampa and/or Disney, south to visit the Keys (I've been there some years ago) or head to Naples and from there visit other beaches or places in the other coast. Any suggestions?
A: Hi Sol!
I have tons of suggestions, but I’m not sure what you have in mind, so you’ll have to pick the area/activities that sound most like “you.” I personally love Key West, because there’s no place else like it, with all the art galleries and crazy attitudes and activities to keep you occupied. Here’s a link to an article I wrote about “the ultimate power adventure” I took there. The end of the article has a list of stuff to do there.
It might be fun for you to make the drive down to Key West but take a day or two to do it. You could stop in Marathon, maybe visit the Dolphin Research Center or take a ride in a seaplane or go our snorkeling with Holiday Isle Dive Shop (which is totally spectacular out on the reef). While there, you should definitely visit Bahia Honda Park (which is absolutely hands-down the best beach in the Florida Keys). From there you could go on to Key West. Here’s a video about Key West, and here’s one about the FL Keys in general, which gives the flavor of them pretty well.
If you head up to Orlando there’s lots to do, too. This is my home-stompin’ grounds. Here’s a link to a list of things to do in Orlando that I compiled with contact info. Here’s also a link to a blog about the new zipline attraction there.  Of course if you’re in the area you might want to visit Disney and the theme parks, since they are such a big deal.
Have a great time!

A+ Clearwater Area Beach That's Good for Kids
Asked by Judy on September 19, 2009
Q: What is a good beach to go to for the day around St. Petersburg or Clearwater. We will be driving over from Orlando. We will be there in laate May and have small children ages 2-10
A: Hi Judy,
How about Fort De Soto’s North Beach? It won top honors on TripAdvisor's 2009 list of the top 10 beaches in the U.S. Here’s a blog I wrote about it that has links to other articles and a video of the area. Watching the video is probably the easiest way for you to get a feel for the area and make sure it’s what you have in mind – but honestly, it’s pretty hard how to see this beach can miss. (If you don’t like the way Fort De Soto sounds, the video has lots of other suggestions in the area).
Have fun getting some sand between your toes.

Searching for Undeveloped SW Florida White Sand Beach
Asked by Charles on September 16, 2009
Q: I'm going to be in southwest Florida in late October, and I'm looking for a beach in this area (if possible between Tampa and Naples) that has the following: white sand, an undeveloped area, and opportunities for shelling. Based on some reading, I've heard that Caya Costa State Park would be a good choice. Is that true, and do you have a better suggestion?
A: Hi Charles,
You picked well. Check out this video of Cayo Costa.
Another beach you should consider is Caladesi Island State Park (by Tampa). It is truly superb. Whichever you choose, remember a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.
Have a great time!

Beach with Everything: Peace and Quiet, A Big Rental House, Lots of Action
Asked by Julie on September 15, 2009
Q: We are planning a beach vacation for June 2010. We have a large family and want oceanfront property. What beaches would be good for us to look at that has larger (5-6 bedroom) houses, private pools, etc that are oceanfront. We have a wide variety of ages, some want peace and quiet others want activities, restaurants, shopping. Where can we go to make everyone happy?? Thanks!
A: Hi Julie,
I’m thinking Destin in Northwest Florida might be a really good place for you. The beach is beautiful, the water calm and clear, and the sand is absolutely white. You can find peace and quiet or lots of action there.
First of all, in June, it will be a little cooler there than in more southern locations (which is good). You can find the sort of big beachfront home with a pool that you’re talking about, too. Here’s a link to VISIT FLORIDA info about lodging; at least several of the listings in it rent homes, and you can find more on the Internet. Here’s a video about ResortQuest that offers NW Florida rentals. (It’s pretty much an ad but it will give you some ideas.)
Here’s a link to a video about the Destin area. Here’s a link to info about some of the shopping in the area.
Here’s some info I compiled about things to do there:
You’ll want to fish in Destin, which is widely known as the "world’s luckiest fishing village."

Snorkeling is also a must-do. Emerald Coast Scuba is one option. The SCUBA is good there too, with awesome wreck diving.

Rent a WaveRunner from Dockside Water Sports –or how about a dolphin tour on the WaveRunner?

Dockside Water Sports offers parasailing flights, too, and even rents pontoon and fishing boats.

Henderson Beach State Park, located a tad east of Destin, offers swimming, picnicking, hiking and bicycling, and their surf fishing is outstanding.

The Florida Gulfarium offers three live marine shows, as well as "meet and greet" sessions with dolphins. Prefer to snag a glimpse of dolphins in the wild? Try a dolphin cruise on the Southern Star – it features a glass bottom and is 80 feet long.

The Track Family Recreation Center offers bumper cars, Blaster Boats (bumper boats with water cannons), go-karts, and more.

Here's an 'if you go' list:

Southern Star Dolphin Cruise, 850- 837-7741
Florida’s Gulfarium, 850-243-9046
The Track Family Recreation Center, 850-654-4668
Henderson Beach State Park, 850-837-7550
Emerald Coast Scuba, 850-837-0955
Dockside Watersports, 850-428-3313

I’m keeping my toes crossed that Destin will keep  your whole family smiling!

A: Hi Win,
The man I spoke with at the park this morning said no, nada, zilch. Follow the link on the website that says “Primitive Camping” for specifications about what’s expected of you. Butterfly Conservatory by Orlando
Asked by chris greenham on September 14, 2009
Q: we are visiting orlando aug/2010, we would like to see a hummingbird,Is there a park or butterfly conservatory somewhere thank you so much
A: Hi Chris,

Hummingbirds are soooo cool. Lukas Nursery (1909 Slavia Road, Oviedo, 407-365-6163) has a Butterfly Conservatory close to Orlando. The Central Florida Zoo has a butterfly sensory garden (Lake Monroe, 407- 323-4450), and Cypress Gardens also has a butterfly conservatory. Harry P. Leu Gardens (1920 N. Forest Ave, Orlando, 407-246-2620) features three miles of paved scenic walkways that take you through 50 acres of Southern-styled gardens including a butterfly garden.

Happy humming,

Wave-Runner Dolphin Eco-Tour
Asked by Sharon on September 12, 2009
Q: Where is the best place in Central East,Southeast or SouthwestFl to take a waverunner TOUR and have the best chance of seeing dolphins? Thanks, Sharon
A: Hi Sharon,
Here are a couple of options in different locations. Click on the highlighted cities for links to info about the area in general.

I saw a ton of dolphin in a back-bay boating tour by Bonita Springs, and my friend Scott (who owns the boat I went out on) says that there are always lots. Here’s a link to Bonita Parasail and Jet-ski. If you end up going there, the tour ends at Doc’s Beach House which is a great place to eat. In fact, my whole day there was really, truly fun.

Marco Island Ski and Watersports Ten Thousand Islands Waverunner Tours explore the adjoining estuaries of the Everglades. The gentleman I spoke with there said that while they cannot guarantee dolphin sightings (which I imagine will be true wherever you go) he said that so many live in the beautiful Marco Island area that it’s almost a sure thing.

Caribbean Watersports in Key Largo offers eco-tours into the Everglades onboard their “Zodiac Inflatable,” and they also rent jet-skis, but they don’t offer jet-ski eco-tours (you can’t bring jet-skis into the Everglades). On their Zodiac tours, besides lots of dolphin, they often see manatee and starfish and more.

I hope this helps. Have fun with your “Flipper friends.”

Orlando Flying Lesson Present
Asked by Louise Eady on September 10, 2009
Q: My partner and I are visiting Florida at the beginning of December for his 50th Birthday. He is a US citizen who has been living in the UK for many years. We are staying near Orlando. I want to book him a flying lesson as a surprise for his birthday. Can you help me with details of where I might find companies offering such a service?
A: Hi Louise,

Ooooh, you’re the best!

Okay, here’s a link to a plane-load of places that can give him a lesson. You can go to Mapquest to figure out how far each is from Orlando.

What would be really cool is if you booked a flight/lesson for him at Polk City’s Fantasy of Flight on the Stearman. Here’s an article I wrote about it so you can see the plane (the article has web links to Fantasy if you decide to do that). It is truly, truly the best; I can't say enough good about the place.

Have a great time here.

No-Partiers, Just Peace and Quiet on the Beach
Asked by Kayla on September 09, 2009
Q: I'm from Oklahoma and have only been to Panama beach for one afternoon.. so I don't really know much about Florida.. My husband and I are planning a much needed vacation.. we would like a beautiful and relaxing place on the beach with clear water and beautiful sand and not anywhere close to a bunch of partiers.. any ideas? THANK YOU!!!!
A: Hi Kayla,
If you’re planning to go the northwest again, try Henderson Beach State Park. (Incidentally, I was talking with some people who live in that area today, and they were saying how much they loved the park – precisely because of the peace and quiet.) Here’s a video about the area. Perdido Key is another beautiful spot in the extreme northwest – think of rolling, white-sand dunes and of calm, emerald colored Gulf waters.

Cayo Costa State Park and Cabbage Key, off Florida's Gulf Coast near Fort Myers are definitely relaxing– you can only reach them by boat and you would absolutely swoon over them! Here’s a video about them (so much better than pictures to get a feel for the area, I think).

Hopefully this will give you someplace to start a chance to get a feel for these areas and to see which appeals to you most.

Enjoy!

Spring break with Twin 13 year-olds
Asked by Joan on September 05, 2009
Q: I have thirteen year old twin girls. They love the water and sports. Looking for a Spring Break beach trip in Florida -- not too little kiddish, not too older teenager. What do you recommend? Thanks!
A: Hi Joan,

What about St. Pete? Or Destin? Here’s a blog about St. Pete and here’s an article about Destin so you can figure out which area sounds most like "you." Here's a link to St. Pete's page on VISITFLORIDA.com so you can see for yourself what is offered there and check out the pictures. Here’s some info I compiled about Destin, which should give you an idea of what you and your girls can enjoy there:

You’ll want to fish in Destin, which is widely known as the "world’s luckiest fishing village."

Snorkeling is also a must-do. Emerald Coast Scuba is one option. (I assume your family members are not all certified divers – but the SCUBA is good there too, with awesome wreck diving).

Family Beach Vacation in December
Asked by dana blankenship on September 04, 2009
Q: My husband and have 2 children 9 an 12, we are taking a vacation around Dec. 27, 2009. We want to take the kids to a beach resort but are concerned about the temps. Where would you recommend for a family beach vacation in December?? Thanks for your help.
A: Hi Dana,

Here’s a link to a page with average Florida temperatures in December – including water temperatures -- so you know what to expect in each area. Obviously make sure you pick someplace in south Florida. Marco Island (by Naples) is lovely and the first place that comes to mind for a relaxing family spot. Check out this video of the area and this link for more information to see if it’s what you had in mind.

The Florida Keys are another warm option. For instance, check out this information about Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key.

Have a great time.

Snorkeling on Beach by Orlando
Asked by Julie on September 01, 2009
Q: Me and 4 other adults are visiting Orlando in Oct. We want to find a nearby beach or lakefront to do some snorkeling. Anything close within 2-3 hours drive?
A: Hi Julie,

Make sure you don’t miss Siesta Key. It’s just over two hours from Orlando on the gulf coast and it’s only about the most beautiful beach in the world (really). Check out this video about snorkeling that was shot there.

Central Florida has LOTS of springs, all within the distance you’re talking about. Check out this website that gives a guide to them. Scroll down to where it says "central Florida" and then hit each link to see what is of the most interest to you. For instance, the information about Crystal River has pictures and says that it “consists of 3 main springs that are of interest to scuba divers and snorkelers." Kings Spring has depths to 50+ feet and features a small cavern that is usually lined with all types of fish including gray snapper, tarpon (100+ lbs.), sergeant majors, sheepshead, mullet and blue crabs. The main attraction to Crystal River is the Florida manatee. Crystal River is the only place in the U.S. that allows you to swim with the manatee. (I personally love this place since I am such a fan of the manatee.)

Have a great time,

Beach, Nightlife and No Car
Asked by Dianne on August 31, 2009
Q: for Xmas break would like to take my son, daughter and 2 friends (28yrs old)to fl. but not sure the right place to go - don't wan to go Ft.laud or keywest - any ideas? beach during day nightlife at night but with no car.
A: Hi Dianne,

Well, you'll want to be pretty far south at that time of year, and since you don’t want to go to Fort Lauderdale or Key West, that pretty much leaves Miami on the Atlantic coast or the Fort Myers area on the Gulf coast. I’m thinking legendary Miami Beach might be perfect – it has all kinds of restaurants, shopping, and activities to keep you occupied, and the beach is awesome. The only downside I can think of is that it’s not the cheapest place in the world. Here's info about it.

Here’s some Fort Myers Beach information, everything from hotels to beaches to activities. The last time I was there was a couple of months ago, and I have to say I had a blast. It’s a beautiful area with lovely beaches; has a Town Square near the pier and lots of water activities. My group went on a boat eco-tour to some remote beaches. It has a little different flavor than Miami. Here’s a link to a blog I wrote about our boat tour.

Take a look at both and pick the one that sounds more like the getaway you’d enjoy – and get ready to get some sand between your toes!

Warm, Quiet Beach in November
Asked by Richard Rickman on August 31, 2009

If you want warm water in November you should head south. How about Bahia Honda? It’s quiet, lovely and toasty. Here’s a video that includes footage of the area, and here’s lots more info and articles. I’ve included a link to water temperatures in the Florida Keys so you can check out for yourself what to expect.
If you have a yen for more action, head to Key West for a day!

Pretty Dives in the Florida Keys -- and a Wreck!
Asked by Caroline Bell on August 29, 2009
Q: Hi LaurenI am trying to book 3 dives in the Keys in December 09 and would be grateful if you could recommend a 5 star PADI or BSAC dive school.I would be grateful if you could recommend an itinerary. I particlualry enjoy 'pretty dives' with lots of colourful coral and fishlife. I would quite enjoy incorporating one wreck dive into my plans.Looking forward to hearing from you
A: Hi Caroline,
How about Holiday Isle Dive Shop in Islamorada? I did two resort dives there and can vouch for how beautiful it is – think lots of fish, coral, conchs, nurse sharks and incredible ledges. They even have a wreck diving site (but I am not qualified to dive that deep so I didn’t see it in person). It tends to not be crowded like Key Largo can be, either.
Check out their website and click on the “sites” section to see the options.
Have fun!

Florida's Version of Megan's Bay
Asked by Amanda on August 28, 2009
Q: My husband and I usually travel to the Caribbean because we like beaches with gentle surf. Think Cane Garden Bay in Tortola, Megan's Bay in St. Thomas. Are there any similar beaches in Florida? We're traveling in mid-October if that makes a difference. Thank you.
A: Hi Amanda,
Okay, I know beaches in the Sunshine State, but I had to Google Megan’s Bay. Hopefully, I am understanding correctly what you are looking for since researching it. Megan’s Bay really has no surf to speak of, which means you should choose a beach on the gulf coast.
Siesta Key Beach and Caladesi Island are a couple of my favorites, but choose a gulf beach according to what you’d like – quiet or lots of activities or luxurious.
Enjoy!

Day Trip to Beach From Orlando
Asked by Terri on August 22, 2009
Q: My sister and I will be in Orlando from 9/20/2009 to 9/26/2009. we would like to take a break from the theme parks for a day and head for the beach. What do you suggest for a day trip?
A: Hi Terri,
Cocoa Beach is the closest beach to Orlando – about an hour – and it’s really fun there. You can lounge on the beach or take a surf lesson. Cocoa is the easiest, best place to learn to surf anywhere, and you don’t get beat up. I took my lesson with FL Surf Lessons. You can parasail, drive up to Kennedy Space Center, check out Ron Jons, and wind surf or kayak out of Calema Windsurfing on the Banana River in Merritt Island. Actually that’s about three day trips, but the point is there’s plenty to do in the Cocoa Beach area.
Check out this video of my first ever surf lesson there. (It’s the first video I ever did, too, a couple of years ago, and I kind of wince at it, but you can see what a great place Cocoa is.)
See you at the beach!

Jellyfish-Free Beaches
Asked by Ginette on August 21, 2009
Q: What is the best destination in Fla to swim without worries about jelly fish
A: Hi Ginette,
The west central or southwest gulf coast, like Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, Anna Maria, Siesta Key, Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach, Naples, or Marco Island would be good choices for you, any time of year. Jellyfish are more likely to swim into town on northwest and Atlantic beaches in Florida (though millions of people swim and surf on those beaches every year with no problem).
I have never been stung by a jelly, but understand your concern, since I tend to be very allergic. There’s actually a product called “Seasafe” which is sunscreen with jellyfish protection. It prevents the jellyfishes’ stinging mechanism from working. If you want some order it before you arrive. It’s really hard to find it in retail sales so expect that you’ll have to have it shipped.
Now relax and come visit us!

Key West Expectations
Asked by Sue Molloy on August 21, 2009
Q: My husband and I are planning a trip to Key West this Feb. What should we expect? We would like to stay near a beach. We also like hiking, site seeing, etc. Help!
A: Hi Sue,
I adore Key West. It’s funky. Chickens wander the streets; there are incredible art galleries and all kinds of places to visit like the Hemingway House, which is surrounded by six-toed cats (really). The Duval Street area is the happening place to be, chock full of every kind of restaurant imaginable and drinking establishments with live entertainment. I personally like to stay within walking distance of it. To give you an overview of Key West, take a look at this video. It can be very family friendly, or party-hearty if you like that instead.
Also, check out this article with lots of info about all the Key West beaches. I’ve also included this link to a map of all the beaches, so you can get a feel for where they are located in relation to everything else.
For ideas of what to do there, check out this article I wrote. It includes a list of things to do besides the featured adventure.
Make absolutely sure you catch at least one sunset celebration in Mallory Square, and make sure to watch Cat Man if he’s there. Also consider spending a day in Dry Tortugas National Park where you can snorkel, explore Fort Jefferson and lounge on the beaches. It’s very remote; very pristine. Here’s a video about it.
Actually if you like snorkeling at all, you should arrange to do it there. It’s pretty amazing.
I’m very jealous—have fun.

Destin in October: Warm Enough to Swim?
Asked by Julia on August 19, 2009
Q: Can't decide if we want to come to the Destin/Ft. Walton area, or Ft. Myers area, the first week of October. Will the water in Destin still be warm enough to swim and snorkel?
A: Hi Julia,
Some of that depends on you. Since I’ve moved to Florida, what I consider cold has changed drastically over the years (I am a big wimp now). The average Gulf water temperature by Pensacola (its water temp will be very similar to Destin's) is about 74 degrees in Oct., and I’d need a wetsuit. However, my brother’s kids swam last year here in those temperatures and had no problem. Check out this link that will give you water temps there for each month.
If Destin’s too cold for you, you could head further south – it’s a heck-of-a big state.

Best Bet for a Sunny Summertime Beach
Asked by anne on August 18, 2009
Q: hello ,family of 6 from Norway are planning Florida trip summer 2010.we went to florida last easter, and were thrilled. now we want to ask you: were in florida has least rain during summer?gulf or atlantic coast?north or south? is it best in june, july or august?I have watch the forcast this summer, and it gives us the impression that it is raining pretty much whole summer....we want to enjoy the sun in the beach . it is possible,or will it be a vacation under an umbrella.?
A: Hi Anne,
I’m very happy to hear that you had a good time on your last trip to Florida.
June is your best bet (the earlier the better), though you can expect to start to see afternoon thunderstorms develop at that time of the year. July and August typically follow this weather pattern:  lovely mornings and early afternoons followed by a 30% chance of thunderstorms during late afternoon. Today is the typical 30% chance of rain, and it’s perfect out right now. Often the summertime storms are fast moving, producing lots of rain quickly and then speeding away, so it’s often not a total washout even when they hit. (Obviously the chance of storms varies – it’s different every year, every month and every day.)
Please assure me you won’t hide under your umbrella if there are storms nearby –you should get off the beach because of the danger of lightning. Here’s a weather map with annual precipitation averages for all of Florida, so you can see for yourself where the driest beaches are. I do hope you’ll come back and see us!

Jet Ski Orlando
Asked by lynda pomphrey on August 15, 2009
Q: we are visiting orlando at the end of august and would like to try out a jet ski. could you recommend a safe place for beginners. As we are based in orlando it would need to be a day trip.
A: Hi Lynda,
Buena Vista Watersports offers jet ski rentals in the Orlando area, and has lots of other activities available, too. Check it out!
Or what about this? What I’m thinking might be really fun for you is to head out to Surf and Ski Watersports’ location in Merritt Island, and then when you’re done jet-skiing, you could go to Cocoa Beach, which is just minutes away. (Surf and Ski has a location directly in Cocoa but I don’t think that one rents jet skis.) Cocoa Beach is only a tad over an hour from Orlando and it would be a huge shame to miss the beach while you’re in Florida.
You’ll be safe if you follow the directions you’re given about the jet skis – and if you remember not to drink and drive.
Have a blast.

"Lazy River" Gulf Beach Getaway
Asked by Angie Garrett on August 06, 2009
Q: Can you recommend some of the finest resorts on the gulf coast of Florida? I am looking for resorts on the beach with large attractive pools, great sight seeing and shopping areas -- ones that are similiar to the Atlantis in the Bahamas that has a "Lazy River." Thank you.
A: Hi Angie,

Check out the Beacon Resorts. They have locations on the Gulf with the kind of features you’re talking about – shopping, the lazy river, lots of pools, nice Gulf beach.

Destin West Beach & Bay Resort on Okaloosa Island offers spectacular views of both the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay – and a “Lazy River lagoon pool.” It’s snuggled up next to four miles of pristine sugar-white beaches, is minutes from Destin Pass (the "luckiest fishing village in the world" ), and within walking distance to the Emerald Coast Convention Center, shops, and restaurants.

The Ramada Beach Resort at Fort Walton Beach is wonderful, as is Crye-Leike Coastal Realty, who offer “the ultimate in Destin vacation rentals including Gulf-front beach homes and condos. Free daily round of golf, free DVD/video game rentals, water park, kid's fishing trip and tickets to local attractions.” Here’s link to hotels in the area, so you can check out the ones that have the flavor that would suit you the best (including the two I just mentioned).

Or, you could consider the other end of the state with Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys. It doesn’t have a lazy river, but it’s surrounded by the Atlantic and the Gulf. It features five swimming pools, including their new resort pool with a multi-tiered sun terrace accessing their private saltwater lagoon. You can even swim with the dolphins there.

Happy floating-into-paradise!

Quiet Beach in the Florida Keys
Asked by Shanna on August 02, 2009
Q: Hello I will be in the Florida keys late august early sept. and i am looking for a map of beaches something that will tell me excat directions and what beaches would you suggest for a more natural feel i mean nobody trying to rent you jet skis just water sand and nature THANKS
A: Hi Shanna,
Here’s a link to a VISIT FLORIDA article about beaches in the Florida Keys, which will give you a guide of beaches from northeast to southwest. If you’re looking for a natural feel, avoid Key West beaches like Smathers Beach – it’s great fun, but not what you are looking for. On the other hand, Bahia Honda State Park is probably exactly what you ARE looking for. It offers lots of sand and peace and quiet, and it’s unbelievably beautiful.
VISIT FLORIDA will give you a free guide to Florida beaches and a free Florida map. I also found this rockin’ map of the Florida Keys online, which will give you great directions (and is also free).
Have fun,

Crystal-Clear-Water-Beaches Closest to Charleston
Asked by erynn on July 29, 2009
Q: I live in Charleston, SC and we are coming to FLorida for a weekend getaway at the beaches. Without driving forever to Sanibel or the Keys, where else is there crystal clear water? We just want to swim in water we can see through lol. Thanks
A: Hi Erynn,
The following are your best and closest bets for beaches where you’ll be able to see underwater for miles (a blatant exaggeration): You can head to the northwest Florida beaches like Panama City Beach, Destin or Port St. Joe, which MapQuest says are about 8-8.5 hours from you. You can also head southwest to Longboat Key or Siesta Key (both awesome), which are not in the Florida Keys at all, but by Sarasota, which MapQuest says are about 8 hours from you. I wish I could make them closer!

Honeymoon in Florida?
Asked by Kristina on July 27, 2009
Q: Hello, I am planning my honeymoon for this October 2009. I am seriously considering Florida. I have never been to Florida. I want to find a beach that will not be too crowded, but I also want to be able to find things close by to do. We are not very outdoorsy (if that is a word – lol), but I would like some nice restaurants and maybe some spas and pampering. Please let me know where you would suggest. Thanks! Kristina
A: Hi Kristina,
Outdoorsy is a word. I think.

I’m going to give you honeymoon options in a few parts of the state.

The place that instantly comes to mind is the Colony Tennis and Beach Resort on Longboat Key by Sarasota. I had a room there that was smack-dab on the Gulf. It was absolutely beautiful, the food was literally the best I’ve ever eaten, and they have the spa and pampering you mentioned – plus they have lots of activities, anything from sailing to fishing to tennis and much more. Follow the links for more info.

Little Palm Island in the Lower Florida Keys is another option. It’s very exclusive and is accessible only by boat or seaplane. It’s a tiny island with only one resort, the Little Palm Island Resort and Spa. It’s protected by a lagoon, has no televisions, telephones or alarm clocks yet boasts a first-rate spa and gourmet restaurant, and options like an ocean-front couple's massage. You can fish, canoe, take a seaplane tour, and Key West is close by if you want more activity. (Everyone should go to Key West at least once, I think.) Here’s a link to an article about it.

Amelia Island is also lovely and offers many other accommodations and price options. It has 13 miles of white-sand beach and is mostly untouched by commercialism. You can horseback ride on the beach and if you feel in need of some culture, you can visit the historic downtown district. When you click on the link, check out the ‘deal’ section on the lower right. There are listings that say things like “Island Spa Renewal Packages, Relaxing Light Massage, Pure Facial, Sweet Island Wrap, Sweet Sugar Glow, Paradise Feet Pedicure” that sound tempting.

Also, I imagine it won’t work into your plans, but you might consider a beach wedding. How awesome would that be?

Beach with NO High Rises
Asked by Victoria on July 26, 2009
Q: Hi, We live in Miami Beach but are looking at going away for a weekend. We want to go to a beautiful beach where there are no high rises, just holiday houses. We are looking for crystal clear water and a relaxing time. We want to feel like we are on a desolate island but only want to travel up 3hours. What do you suggest?
A: Hi Victoria,
How about Bahia Honda State Park? MapQuest says it’s just over two and a half hours from Miami (on Bahia Honda Key at mile marker 37). The water is shallow and calm (and sooo clear); the beach is long and sandy. The wildlife is abundant and it is incredibly beautiful. It’s absolutely one of my favorite beaches. However, Bahia Honda only offers campsites and cabins, so unless you’d be happy with those, you'd have to find accommodations on a nearby island – perhaps Marathon.

You could stay at a Marathon resort with its own private beach, like Casa Del Sol Beach Resort or Cocoplum Beach and Tennis Club (click on the links for descriptions and photos), and check out Bahia Honda while you’re there. I think you’ll be really happy with the area.

Palm Trees and Beach in Northern Florida
Asked by Dagmar on July 24, 2009
Q: We will be visiting Florida in August, coming from Germany we want to make sure to see a beautiful beach with palm trees, but we don't want to go further South than necessary. Where could we find the most Northern beach like that?
A: Hi Dagmar,
You’re not going to have to travel very far! Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island are at the very northernmost tip of the Sunshine State on the east coast, and they have lots of palms (as well as other kinds of trees).

Click on the link to videos and articles featuring the area. Here’s a guide to area Jacksonville/Amelia Island Area Beaches by the VISIT FLORIDA staff. The beaches and parks are listed geographically from north to south with a little information about each.

I must admit Amelia Island is a personal favorite of mine so I’m hoping you’ll visit it. A word of warning: Make sure you bring sunscreen and a cover-up for the beach so you don’t catch too many rays and mar your trip with sunburn.

Have fun. Are you going to go horseback riding on the beach?

Q: I've been working out for awhile now and I'm thinking about trying a sprint triathlon. Is there any group that meets to train for them in the rockledge, cocoa, cocoa beach, melbourne area? Thx.
A: Hi Andy,
Here is a list of Meetup fitness groups near Cocoa, where you might find some like-minded souls (though skimming through the list, I can see nothing that is exactly what you are talking about). Here are workouts and training routes in the area by “Map my Tri.” This site says it will link you up with groups that train, but there is a fee, and I didn’t pay to find out how good it was.
Here’s a link to “Tri.find” which lists triathlons and other athletic events in Florida (which you probably already have). And –ta-dah! I finally found something I think will work for you. Check out the “Space Coast Runners Club” – they rock, with things like the Beachside Tri Camp, fun runs and much, much more.
I always love to hear about someone pursuing fitness goals. It’s your ticket to health, I think.

Surf Fishing on the Gulf
Asked by james on July 18, 2009
Q: I want to know about a place that does surf fishing (morning and evening) that's right on the gulf.
A: Hi James,
The Gulf doesn’t really have surf – you need to go to the Atlantic side of the state to find real waves. However, you can most certainly fish off the beach on the Gulf. What our very knowledgable fishing insider, Terry Tomalin (you can link to his page here) says about it is: “The only time people fish in the surf, or should we say here on the Gulf Coast, off the beach, is during the summer months, when the snook are spawning. We do, however, have a lot of great wade fishing for trout, redfish and snook on the leeward side of the barrier islands and in the Intracoastal waterway. This land-based angling can be very effective, especially if you work the tides. Of all the places on the West Coast of Florida to fish by foot, Sarasota is one of the best.”
Hope you hook a big one!

Marvelous Marco Island Getaway
Asked by Deana on July 16, 2009
Q: Coming from NYC to Paradise? Hi Lauren, my husband (28) and I (25) are coming down to florida at the end of November. After doing some research we decided to stay at the Marriott Marco Island. Can you tell us what we can expext at this resort during this time of year? We really want a nice beach getaway, quite and relaxing. Also do you have any suggestions for activities in and around the area? Thanks a million!
A: Hi Deana,
What you can expect -- escaping from the frigid north in November -- is that you’ll really believe you’ve landed in paradise. Marco Island is tropical, with lots of white sand, lots of shells and lots of sunshine. You should definitely rent a boat or go sailing to the numerous nearby outer islands, or take a trip via kayak. Nature watching is fun (you’ll almost certainly see dolphins). Bird watching, fishing, and a day-trip to the Everglades are other options -- and shopping and dining are always good.
Here’s a link to Marco Island’s website, which will take you on a video tour of the area. If you click on its “attractions link” it has links for places you can go sailing, or on manatee tours or airboats rides, etc. Here’s a link to a list of area events, which you’ll want to check as the time gets closer for your trip.
Remember your sunscreen! You’re going to have a wonderful trip.

Biking the Florida Keys
Asked by Michael Ranson on July 13, 2009
Q: I am hoping to come to Florida in February and plan on staying in Key West. I would like to hire a road bike and go on a 56 mile cycle ride. Is it legal to ride on Highway 1? I know there is a new bike path being built, and wondered if it was suitable for road (rather than mountain) bikes. All information gratefull received.Michael
A: Hi Michael,
Here’s a link to information about bike riding in the Florida Keys. The top part shows bike shops, but if you scroll down you’ll find info about bike paths with great detail like “The Seven Mile Bridge is the worse portion of the trip because of traffic and wind, but the Bridge does offer a narrow lane for bikers.” This link also gives details about which paths are paved (the ones I've ridden alongside Highway 1 have all been suitable for road bikes). I suggest you call some of the bike shops listed in the area you plan on traveling for more information. Equipment Locker Sport and Bicycle, MM 53, of Marathon (305-289-1670) assures me that biking on the Highway is indeed legal.
Happy pedaling,

Family Beach Vacation With Lots of Action
Asked by phyllis on July 11, 2009
Q: Family Vacation with 4 chidren from 6 to 12 Florida beach with water sports and other activities
A: Hi Phyllis,
Florida boasts an astounding 663 miles of beaches, so there are more than a few places that would be really great for you to come on your family vacation. I’m going to give you a few suggestions for some of my favorites, each in totally different parts of the state.

Cocoa Beach is Orlando’s closest beach, and since it’s on the Atlantic side, it has waves, which makes it really fun for surfing. You can parasail, go on a dolphin cruise, rent wave-runners, fish, kayak, and of course visit nearby Kennedy Space Center. Here’s a link to area attractions, including kid-friendly Calema windsurfing and watersports (on the Banana River). Calema has kids’ camps and I can personally recommend them. Orlando offers almost endless options for fun if you want to escape the beach for a day.

Panama City Beach, in northwest Florida, offers 27 miles of beaches. You won’t have waves because it’s on the Gulf, but you can parasail, windsurf, snorkel and fish. You can take a seaplane or airboat tour or visit Gulf World Marine Park; here’s a link to these attractions, and here’s a link to a great article by Chelle Koster Walton about the area titled “A REAL. FUN. BEACH.”

Finally, Siesta Key, also on the Gulf Coast (approx. 55 miles south of Tampa) is absolutely lovely. In fact, in 2009, “Dr. Beach” named Siesta Beach the number two beach in the country – it’s truly that good. You can parasail, fish, take a dolphin or sunset cruise, rent bikes or rollerblades. Here’s a link to 15 of the local attractions.

Just pick your favorite patch of sand!

A: Hi John,
I have a few options for you. In Melbourne (which Mapquest says is an hour and 13 minutes from Kissimmee) Batter’s Choice Batting Cages offers pitching machines and cages. Champion’s Sports Complex in Orlando – only 22 miles and 28 minutes away from Kissimmee – offers similar services. Finally, you can contact the Osceola County Softball Complex in Kissimmee (an awesome facility) to see if they can help you. Hope you have some hard-hitting fun in the Sunshine State!

Hang Gliding in July?
Asked by Tony on July 02, 2009
Q: Hi Lauren. Another Canadian here. I am considering a trip to Florida and want to learn to hang glide. Do you think the weather would be conducive to completing a course thru novice level within a week sometime between July 11 and 25? In other words, would the weather permit me to accumulate the required hours? Thanks,Tony
A: Hi Tony,
Maybe. It depends on several things. (I am a tandem hang gliding instructor, so am very familiar with this.)

The best way for you to learn is for you to take three or four flights in the morning, and then do the same in the evening, for as many days in a row as it takes. You probably already know that morning and evening are when the air is most suitable for teaching because there won't be much if any thermal activity --or, in other words, the air will be calm.

A few flights at each end of the day will give you lots of time in the air, but it won't be so much that it will physically or mentally overwhelm you. You'll need a little break afterward to let your lessons soak in. Conversely, if you fly one day and then don't fly for a month, it will take you forever to learn.

This is where the "maybes" come in:
Some of it depends on YOU. If you have previous aviation experience you will be ready to solo more quickly, because you'll already understand the concepts of ground speed and airspeed, setting up an approach and rounding out over the ground and so forth. For example, I learned at the same time that my husband and best friend learned; they were both already pilots and I was not, and it took me much longer. This is common. The length of time it takes you learn will also somewhat depend on your natural abilities.

Some of it depends on the flight park you choose. "Discovery Flights" pay better than lessons, and some flight parks will focus on them -- not YOU. At Quest Air (where I most often fly) I have met very disgruntled students from other flight parks, who are in Florida for only a short time, as you would be, who find themselves only getting in one flight in a morning -- after paying out a bundle for a "novice package." Ask about this and how busy the flight park you choose will be. (I am happy to discuss my personal opinions privately with you if you wish. ) I also think it is helpful if the flight park you decide on assigns you to one particular instructor instead of switching you between several each day. Trust and continuity are very important. Ask about this, as well.

Some of it depends on pure luck.
Mostly, mornings should be fine for you to fly in July -- but you could get very unlucky and end up with a rainy or windy week and end up not being able to fly. (Expect to start flying at the crack of dawn.) In Florida, afternoon thunderstorms often occur and in the evening, we can get seabreezes. Many evenings are suitable to fly but you can almost toss a coin as to whether any particular one will be.

The ideal thing would be if you were in Florida from the July 11-25 and could fly any day it looked good. if you only had a specific week, and it was flyable for five of those days, and you got four flights a day, you'd only have 20 flights, which is pretty marginal. (20 flights, as you may have gathered, is what is typically sold in a novice package at most of the flight parks.) Certainly some people are ready to solo in that time but many, many are not. As with all forms of aviation, you should be really well prepared. Soloing a student is a huge responsibility.

Finally, it's a great sport. Just an incredible one. I hope you'll decide to come to the Sunshine State and soar.

Road Biking Hub
Asked by Paula on June 30, 2009
Q: Florida cycleling:A greeting from Canada. My partner and I would like to come for 5 days cycleling trip (rode bikes, up to 80 - 100 km/day). Could you please give us any suggestions on route?Ideally we would like to stay in one location in Florida and take our daily trips.
A: Hi Paula,

Greetings from Florida!

You should consider staying in Winter Garden or Clermont (west of Orlando) so you can ride in the following areas. The West Orange Trail is a world-class rail-trail which stretches 22 miles along the edge of Lake Apopka and through the quaint downtown of Winter Garden. Its highlights include a butterfly garden about a mile east of the Oakland Outpost, the Winter Garden Historical Museum and picturesque views of Lake Apopka, and one of its coolest features is that it runs smack-through the middle of historic, quaint downtown Winter Garden, where my hubby and I often stop for lunch at one of the cafes (with our bikes).

From the West Orange trail you can branch off to the north on another trail to the Clarcona Horseman’s Park, which is a gorgeous ride. To the east, the trail technically ends at Killarney Station in Ocoee, but that’s only because you cross into Lake County by the Bikes and Blades shop there. The trail keeps right on going another eight miles over the hills to Clermont Waterfront Park (East Avenue, Clermont, FL 34711, phone: 352- 253-4915). Here’s a map of the West Orange and the loop that goes to Clarcona.

From the section of trail that goes from Killarney to Clermont, you can take off on the rides (on the actual roads) that are favored and famous with local bikers; for instance, Hospital Hill, Sugarloaf Mountain and Grassy Ridge Road. This is where the “Horrible Hundred” bike ride is held.

The easiest way for you to get maps of these roads and figure out how to link them together is to get a map of the Horrible Hundred course. The Florida Freewheelers host this event and could tell you where you can get a map from the 2008 event (in 2009 it will be held in November), as well as give you other advice.

Anyhow, if you stayed in the area, these rides could easily keep you occupied for five days, and if you wanted to do something else on one of the days, heaven knows Orlando offers lots of options.

For more maps and ideas, here’s a link to the Florida Bicycle Association and the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. And finally, here is a great VISIT FLORIDA bike trail guide that includes other areas.

Happy pedaling.

Wakeboarding for Children
Asked by peter on June 21, 2009
Q: recomend suitable place towakeboardfor children please
A: Hi Peter,
The Orlando Watersports Complex is hard to beat. They have 2 cable parks (lakes where you get towed on ropes that dangle from the cable) plus a lake for boats. They are totally geared towards kids and offer all kinds of camps and lessons. Oh, and they'll rent you everything you need.

You can wakeboard (or ski) on the cable park for novices and intermediates and watch the hotshots do tricks on the sliderpark when you take a break. The music and all the activity give it a very cool atmosphere, yet it's such a healthy, positive place to go. Here's a link to a blog I wrote about it with contact info.
Your kid(s) will think it's great.

Hang Gliding is on the Bucket List
Asked by Sam on June 20, 2009
Q: I'm working on my bucket list and want to try hang gliding. I"m planning to be in Florida in Late July. Can I hang glide somewhere?
A: Hi Sam,
You have chosen an adventure that’s near and dear to my heart!

Here's a link to a blog I wrote dubbed "Soaring the Florida Sky" that has contact information about places in Florida where you can enjoy a tandem hang gliding flight, and here's a link to another dubbed "Almost Paradise: Hang Gliding Over the Gulf" that covers my friend Scott's boat-towing operation in Bonita Springs.
If you come by Quest Air, I might well meet you -- but wherever you choose to go, I'm thrilled you're going to get a chance to sample the sky in such a unique, beautiful way.

Spectator Sports in July in Orlando
Asked by shirley on June 15, 2009
Q: we are in orlando from 11-24 july and would like to go and see a game of some sort, e.g baseball, football or basketball. can you suggest somewhere while we're out there please.
A: Hi Shirley,
Summer is not the season for most sports (football, hockey, basketball), but you have several options.
July IS the season for major league baseball. Option one is to take a day, drive to St. Pete and watch the Tampa Bay Rays play. I don’t know if you follow major league baseball, but the Rays were World Series contenders last year. I have watched them play and adore them. Mapquest says that it’s an hour and fifty minutes from Orlando to St. Pete. You could explore the area –which is fabulous – and catch the game, too. Here’s a link to the Tampa Bay Rays schedule for July. They have three home games scheduled while you will be in town. Here’s a link to page where you can get tickets and lots more information.
Another option is to visit Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, which is located right in Orlando. They host frequent events; for example, USSSA Elite Baseball week 1 from July 10th - July 19th. You can easily scroll through their schedule to check out what might interest you during your stay.
The Central Florida Sports Commission has still more ideas – including wacky ones, like the 17th Annual Celebrity Mascot Games (July 16-18), the ONLY event of its kind in the world. Hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, the Celebrity Mascot Games features nearly 30 mascots from sports teams across the country that will battle through gladiator-themed games to determine who is “the true champion of the sports world.” Actually, I gotta go see that one…
Have a great time.

Discovering Dolphins in the Florida Keys
Asked by sandy on June 08, 2009
Q: We are staying in Hawks Cay Resort for a week in July. Our boys age 12 AND 9 want to swim with dolphins. Where will they have the best experience?
A: Hi Sandy,
Since you’re staying at Hawks Cay I assume you know that they offer swimming with the dolphins. In case you don’t, here’s a link to that page on their site, and here’s a link to a video about the experience your boys can enjoy there.
Where I swam with the dolphins is at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon in the Florida Keys (close to your location at Hawks Cay). Here’s a video of my experience. Maybe you can get a little of the flavor of both places by watching.
Both are passionate about their animals, about caring for them, educating the public about them and showing the public how remarkable they truly are. I think your boys will have a memorable experience at either.

Want to Hold a 'Gator?
Asked by Harold Kober on June 06, 2009
Q: Best place to actually hold an alligator - is there a farm or something?
A: Hi Harold,
Check out Gatorland in Orlando. They have several exhibits/shows where you can hold and stroke baby ‘gators (included in admission). And get this! In their “Rookie-Wrestling" Adventure (only 10 bucks more) you can sit on the back of one that’s eight to nine feet in length and that has 82 razor sharp teeth.

Also, Gatorama in Palmdale promises that if you want to hold an alligator (at the end of a show) or just stroke it to see how it feels, you will have the opportunity. The experience is included with admission.

Have a super time in the Sunshine State.

Beach, Dolphins and Airboats, Oh My!
Asked by Keith on May 26, 2009
Q: Now that we have figured out where we are flying into (Fort Lauderdale) can you steer us in a direction for swimming with the dolphins, sky diving, beach with waves, airboat tour? We have our kids 25,21, 18 traveling with us. They love to do adventurous things but i don't know if we should head North of Fort Lauderdale or South. I thought we would steer clear of the Orlando crowd since we are not doing the parks, but we do not want romantic areas. Family friendly but more activity for all our ages. Please help. We are leaving June 13th. Thanks.
A: Hi Keith,
Thanks for the details – it really helps me to guide you to the appropriate place.
I’d advise you to head south to the Miami area. The beaches all along the east coast have waves. The beaches on the west side of the state, on the Gulf, tend not to have them. Here’s a link to VISIT FLORIDA info about Miami Beach, which also has links to information about other beaches right in the area. I’d explore several. Haulover Beach is clothing optional so consider yourself warned.
Miami also has the Seaquarium, which is home to Dolphin Harbor. Here’s a video that highlights the dolphin experiences there.
The Tamiami Trail – a highway that runs between Tampa and Miami -- goes right through the Everglades, which will give you a boatload of choices for your airboat tour. Here’s a link to a list (check the address to make sure the one you choose is close to Miami – the computer sometimes adds places it shouldn’t). Here’s a link to a video of the place I went to right outside of Miami.
Here’s a link to Skydive Air Adventures, which serves the Miami area. Turns out I met the operators a couple of weeks ago at a hang gliding competition – small world.
Have a great time!

Sunshine State Summer Sports
Asked by Per on May 25, 2009
Q: I am taking my family to Florida in June/July, we´ll start in Orlando and go down to Ft. Lauderdale, Miami and the Keys. Are there any summer activities during this time for NFL, MLB, NBA teams or Fla universities? Pre-season games, training camps etc. My sons, 12 and 10, would love to take in American sports live. Since we live in Sweden the opportunity doesn´t arise too often so I was hoping for a chance now.Thankful for any assistance.
A: Hi Per,

Welcome to the land of sunshine and sports!

In Orlando, check out the schedule at the Disney Sports Complex.  I just glanced at it and you’ll be able to choose from soccer, baseball, duathlons, tennis, basketball and much more.

The Gators Football Team are our 2008 National Champions and are based a couple of hours north of Orlando in Gainesville, and will actually be having a football camp while you’re in town. Check out their schedule for other sports you might be interested in. Here’s a video I did at a Gator game last year. The atmosphere is INSANE (but in a good way).

The Florida Marlins are a Major League Baseball team that is based out of Miami. Each season consists of 162 games (or 163 in the event of a tie breaker) which generally begins on the first Sunday in April and ends on the first Sunday in October – so that will fit nicely into your plans. The link will give you exact schedules and you can buy tickets from it, as well.

Miami also boasts the Miami Dolphins pro football team, the Miami Heat pro basketball, the Florida Panthers pro ice hockey, and the Miami Hurricanes for college football. Here’s a link to all of their schedules so you can see what each has going on and what fits into your plans and interests.

Here’s a link to sports in the Florida Keys – but they are a paradise that revolves more around SCUBA, snorkeling and fishing. Have fun. I think you just might…

A: Hi Yesila,
Here’s a link to a blog I wrote sometime ago dubbed “Marvelous Miami Adventures” with lots of ideas for you. Just pick depending on your interests. I personally think one of the more romantic things on the list is South Beach Kayak’s "Fool Moon Kayak.” A full moon kayak begins with a guided kayak tour through the islands at sunset with a final destination of Monument Island. Once on the island, you will enjoy a bonfire and weenie roast. Sounds cool, huh?
Tell your hubby he’s lucky to have you -- and enjoy your stay in the Sunshine State.

Here’s a link with a list of several of them (scroll down; the Florida Keys listings are near the bottom of the page).

Have a great time. I love that place.

A: Hi Paul,

Florida boasts three NFL teams: the Miami Dolphins, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so you’ve got three locations to choose from.

The regular season -- a 17-week schedule during which each team has one bye week and plays 16 games -- starts on the Thursday night in the first full week of September (the Thursday after Labor Day) and runs weekly to late December or early January. Since that means you’ll be here in fall and/or winter, you should probably choose from Miami or Tampa Bay simply because they are farther south and therefore warmer – something you will want with the beach time you mentioned. As far as that goes, Miami is the farthest south of them all, so that’s where you may want to go as it will be markedly warmer.

Both Miami and Tampa feature beautiful beaches, but if you’d like waves to surf on, you should choose Miami. The Gulf side (where Tampa Bay is located) is protected enough that the water is flatter. I enjoy playing in the surf but also adore the Tampa Bay area so it’s really a question of personal preference.

Here’s a list of 108 hotels/motels in Miami. It should give you a feel of what fits your budget and style. (I don’t know if you have young children or want to gear the trip to more adult tastes.) Have a wonderful holiday – and remember your sunscreen!

Northwest Florida Snorkeling
Asked by jane on May 12, 2009
Q: is there good snorkeling anywhere on the panhandle?
A: Hi Jane,
Yes!
In Destin, spotting rays, fish, nurse sharks and sea turtles is common (and visitors have even spotted humpback whales). Emerald Coast Scuba (850-837-0955) is one of many companies that offer it. Henderson Beach State Park (850- 837-7550), located a tad east of Destin, boasts 6,000 feet of picturesque shoreline snuggled against the emerald Gulf of Mexico, rich with dolphins, sea turtles, fish and birds.
For inland snorkeling, check out Vortex Spring (800-342-0640). It’s not only the foremost inland Florida dive resort on the Gulf Coast but also the largest diving facility in the state.
At Ponce de Leon Springs (850-836-4281) you can swim or snorkel in the main spring, a convergence of two underground water flows that yield 14 million gallons of water a day.
Have a great time!

Adventurous Planning
Asked by Zach on May 05, 2009
Q: I want to plan a trip to Florida with a lot of events. I know what I want to do, as sky diving, bungee jumping, adventure cove, beaches, sea world, etc. Is there a person I can call or sit down with that I can give a list of events and dates and just have them set everything up or do I just kind of have to search and piece it all together slowly by myself? Thanks for the help!
A: Hi Zach,
About the best I can do is to send you links to various places. Here’s a list of Florida Skydiving locations. Many of the places you mentioned are in the Orlando area so I’d choose someplace close to it to skydive. Here’s Fun Spot in Kissimmee, which is the tallest bungee-type jump in the state (Orlando area). Here’s Discovery Cove (which is what I think you meant, also Orlando area). Here’s SeaWorld Orlando. Here’s more info about Cocoa Beach. It’s a cool beach and to the east of Orlando. Skydiving, etc., you need to schedule ahead of time, but for the bungee, the beach and SeaWorld you can just show up, so it should be pretty simple to schedule.
Have fun!

Apalachicola River Paddle
Asked by mike on May 01, 2009
Q: we are planning a trip from colunbus ga to panama city beach by way of the apalachicola river and icw. can you give us any info on marinas and maybe hotels from the fla state line south. i cant find any information about this. thanks
A: Hi Mark,
I can see why this was so hard to research for you–it’s had me going for hours! The really funny thing is eventually my search led me back to VISIT FLORIDA.
Here’s lots more info on the Apalachicola Paddling Trail System from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), which features approximately 100 miles of scenic waterways for boaters, canoeists and kayakers.   The shortest trails are 2 miles long, while others are 4 to 16 miles and offer half- or full-day paddling trips.  You can combine trails to create two- or three-day trips for an extended backcountry experience.  Here are paddling maps from the FWC.
From what I could figure, there is only a series of trails, not a way to do the entire thing, so imagine my shock when I found this VISIT FLORIDA article by Terry Tomalin – who has done the exact trip you are talking about! The article does not go into great detail, so I suggest you ask him the same question you asked me. He is clearly the authority on this one. Here is his page.

Bungee Jumping Madness

Q: I would like to go bungee jumping. Is there a place in Florida where I can do this?
A: Hi Mark,
The Track Family Recreation Center in Destin (850-654-4668) offers a 75 foot Bungee Jump plunge. After a 120 mph. fall off of  the 300 foot Skycoaster in Kissimmee (at Fun Spot), you’ll be ready for a round of mini-golf.
Have fun, crazy dude.

Horseback Riding Birthday
Asked by Brett on April 27, 2009
Q: Hello, I would like to take my partner horseback riding for his birthday. Neither of us are current riders. I'd love a semi private guided walk down the beach or a forest that is not going to break my budget. Can you recommend some places? thank you.
A: Hi Brett,
Giddy up!

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have experience. Just make sure you wear long pants, boots or shoes with a heel, and I suggest you wear a helmet as well. Here’s a link to my blog ‘Hooray for Horses’ that has a few places you can go. I like the Ocala National Forest.

If you want to ride on the beach (how cool would that be?), scroll down through my questions. You’ll find one titled ‘Horseback Riding on the Gulf Coast’ that details info about riding on the beach by Panama City.
Have a great time!

Florida Info for Powerppoint Presentation
Asked by Doug Larsen on April 21, 2009
Q: Lauren, I am a currently a Freshman at Stuart Public High School. We are doing Powerpoints over States. I have drawn Florida I am wondering on some good information. Can you please blog back or email me as soon as possible Thanks so muchDoug Larsen
A: Hi Doug,
Florida, with its ideal weather and abundance of water, is a favored destination for adventures like hang gliding, SCUBA diving, cave diving, sky diving, snorkeling, water skiing and wakeboarding and fishing, to name a few. We are also a sports Mecca, with the incredible Gator football team, and the world series baseball contenders, the Tampa Bay Rays, calling the Sunshine state home. 289 major league baseball spring training games were played in Florida this year alone, in 15 different locations.
I hope this helps.

Horseback Riding on the Gulf Coast
Asked by Ang on April 19, 2009
Q: My husband, daughter and I are wanting to take a vacation where we can stay on the beach and my daughter wants to ride horses on the beach. We like the gulf side. Do you know if they have horseback riding on beach near Destin? If not, where do they have it on the gulf side? Thanks.
A: Hi Ang,
Prepare to saddle up (and accept your mum-of-the-year award). Two-bit Stable Beach Rides in Cape San Blas, by Panama City, should do the trick. It’s one of the only remaining vacation destinations in the country to allow visitors to enjoy horseback riding on the beach.

Family Fun in Destin
Asked by chris woods on April 07, 2009
Q: We are staying in Destin in June, first time. Would like suggestions for adventures for my family- wife and two kids (10 year old girl and 12 year old boy). If you had five days, what what you want to do in Destin/surrounding area?
A: Hi Chris –
I have a ton of suggestions.
Henderson Beach State Park, 850- 837-7550
Emerald Coast Scuba, 850-837-0955
Fishing Destin
Dockside Watersports, 850- 428-3313

Have fun!

Florida Water Skiing Fun
Asked by Gabriela on April 04, 2009
Q: Hey Lauren,We want to try some water skiing at "gator free" lakes in Northeast or Central Florida. We're from the Jacksonville area and don't want to trailer our boat too far. Can you recommend any lake front campgrounds with cabins available for rental, that we could take our 16 yr old and her best friend and teach them to ski? We usually go to the beach but want to try something different for spring break. Thanks!
A: Hi Gabriela,
First, I should confess that the lakes do have ‘gators – like, all of the lakes, even the little one in my backyard – but it’s very safe to ski on them. Read up on it if you’re concerned.
There are lots of great lakes you can choose from, but I personally know the eight-lake Harris Chain, which includes the large 13,788-acre Lake Harris and smaller 3,359-acre Little Lake Harris, as well as the Clermont Chain, which is comprised of 13 lakes that range from 20 to 3,634 acres. Here’s a map of the Harris Chain. Both chains are beautiful.
Nelson Outdoor Resort in Fruitland Park offers camping and cabins and is on the Harris Chain (actually, on a river that leads to the Chain, but for all intents and purposes it’s on the Chain). MapQuest says that Jacksonville is about 2 and a half hours from Fruitland.
I also found this link that has lots of places on Lake County lakes that offer camping/cabins, depending on where you want to go. Another option is using this Florida State Park link. Click on the park where you’re interested in staying and then hit camping/cabins.
You’ll have a great time. Water skiing used to be how we spent our family vacations.

Star Quality Mum Looking for Studio
Asked by Kelly Sullivan on April 04, 2009
Q: Hi Lauren: Is there a studio where my 14 yr & 2 friends can receive a short singing lesson & record and cut a song or two? Thanks!
A: Hi Kelly,
This is a bit out of my area of expertise, but I’ll take a whack at it! Phantom City Studio in Orlando offers song writing tips and will mix and record for you. I was surprised it’s not even that pricey, and it’s a professional studio. (Ha, I just saw you had left Phantom City the same question, so I’m not telling you anything you don’t know.) Good luck with your very thoughtful, fun idea.

Where are the COOLEST and Best Hang Glider Babes Hanging?
Asked by Linda on March 31, 2009
Q: Hi Lauren, great webpage! I was wondering if you could tell me where all the great and cool female hang glider pilots are going to be this Saturday night???
A: Hi Linda,
Thanks so much for writing and letting me point out that Wallaby Ranch near Orlando is hosting Wills Wing Demo Days this week -- the biggest annual hang gliding gathering party on the planet.
Linda -- for all that are interested -- is the number one ranked female hang glider pilot in the United States. I (tragically) am ranked number two. My ranking is hardly liable to improve this year due to my recent shoulder surgery.
Come on out and meet Linda, me, and the other top pilots that will be "hanging out" (get the pun?) at Demo Days this year.

Snorkeling and SCUBA and Fun, Oh My!
Asked by Karen on March 24, 2009
Q: Would like to vacation in Florida this summer and I'd like to know where the best City and places where my family and I could go Snorkling and Scuba Diving?
A: Hi Karen,
Wow, the only reason that this is such a tough question is that Florida has so many cool diving and snorkeling areas.
There’s a 120 mile long reef that runs along the Florida Keys Island chain, the only North American living coral reef, so basically, anywhere you choose in the Keys is going to suit you. Islamorada is great because the diving sites are not crowded. Here’s an article I wrote about diving there. Here’s a video of a Pelican Cove Resort & Marina in Islamorada, so you can get a feel for it and see if it looks like your kind of paradise.
Looe Key is famed for diving, and Bahia Honda State Park has some fabulous snorkeling (and it truly is one of the coolest places I’ve been to). Here’s a video about them.
It comes down to personal preference. If you like night life, lots of attractions, and art, go to Key West. If you like quiet, go to Islamorada or one of the other islands instead.
I’ve also included a link to a video titled ‘Diving in Pompano Beach’ and a link to VISIT FLORIDA articles about diving, because it has detailed info about lots of sites.
Have fin (get it? ha-ha),

Adventure in the Florida Keys
Asked by Denise on March 24, 2009
Q: I am looking to surprise my husband with an "adventure gift" while we are in the Florida Keys. I'd like to arrange for some excitement for him... any suggestions? Scuba is out because we have friends who can take him. Any other ideas?
A: Hi Denise,
Oh, the Florida Keys are easy to come up with ideas for. I think kite-boarding is fabulous, and the Keys are a perfect place to learn (because of the laminar wind and knee-deep water that goes for miles, where you can’t hit anything). If you scroll though my old questions (hit ‘read all questions’) and find the one titled ‘Kiteboarding in the Keys’ it has more info and links. Deep sea fishing is another idea.
I went on an all-day power-boat adventure in Key West. You go out on this big catamaran and get to go snorkeling, ride-wave runners, parasailing, ride banana boats and jump on a water trampoline. The price wasn’t bad, either, and drinks and tons of fancy food are included. Here’s a link to the article I wrote about it, titled the ‘Ultimate Key West Adventure.’
If this stuff doesn’t sound good write back and I’ll come up with more.

Extreme Fun in the Dark in Tampa
Asked by Cindy on March 12, 2009
Q: Hey Lauren! I was wondering if there any extreme outdoor activies to do at night around tampa or anywhere near there? Thanks so much!!
A: Hi Cindy,

You’re making me laugh – adventure’s not enough – let’s do it while it’s dark out! I like your attitude.

Okay, to start, Big Cat Rescue, located at 12802 Easy Street, Tampa, Florida, offers a ‘Wild Eyes at Night Tour’  that promises to have you “groping through the underbrush in the wilds of a Florida forest when you hear the roar of lions and tigers so close you can almost feel their hot breath! Armed with only a flashlight you continue on at the urging of your guide and notice that you are the main attraction to all the wild animals living on Easy Street.”

EZ SCUBA Diving in Tampa offers very cool night dives (but if you’re not a diver this won’t work for you).

Grand Prix Tampa, which is open to either 10 p.m. or 12 midnight, not only features go-karts, but also attractions like the Turbo Bungee. Its website says, “Calling all thrill seekers! If your idea of a good time is getting your adrenaline pumping, then you have to check out our Turbo Bungee. Get hooked up to two bungee cords as you bounce on the trampoline and you’ll be able to jump, fly, and flip up to 20 feet in the air. This is a great time for young and old alike!”

The Tampa Adventure Group schedules weekly adventures, so you might check their calendar when you’re coming into town.

Have fun, wild child!

Zip Lining Fun
Asked by Marissa on March 10, 2009
Q: I will be in Vero Beach April 11-18th and we really want to go ziplining so i was wondering if there are any places in Florida that have that. We want to do something unique like that because we did the whole Disney thing already so if you could give me some recomendations i would appreciate it! Thanks!
A: Hi Marissa,
You’re in luck. Zip Florida in St. Cloud (407-957-9794) offers a cool canopy adventure. There are also a few zip lines at Adventures Unlimitedin its high ropes course, but it’s located far from Vero Beach – way up in Milton. Here are a few more ideas for fun in two of my blogs, one about the Orlando area, one about the Miami area. Enjoy!

St. Petersburg Run Fun
Asked by Bridget on March 06, 2009
Q: Looking for a running club/organization to see if there are any planned races for the week of March 28-April 3 in the St. Pete area.
A: Hi Bridget,
The St. Pete Mad Dogs Triathlon Club has training runs of various distances each week (three of them). Their website says, “You don't need to be a member to participate in our "show-and-go" training (you show up ready and attired to work out, and off we go, whether it's 2 people or a hundred).”
Here’s also a list of St. Pete’s running routes and info.
Or, you could jog into town a couple of weeks early and catch St. Petersburg’s Premier Running Event, 2009 Bay to Bay 12K, 5K and Fun Runs, held March 13 – March 15.
Have a fun run.

ATV Trails Near Orlando
Asked by Roger Boettcher on February 24, 2009
Q: Lauren,Will be in the Disney / Orlando area the first week of April. We are wondering if there are ATV trail with rental units available. Thanks,Roger
A: Hi Roger,
Here is a listing of trails in order of distance from the center of Orlando. (This site is not much good except for that information – but it will give you a very quick idea of what trails are located where.) Eagle Rider Adventure Rentals (888-900-9901) rents ATVs, dirt bikes, jet skis and scooters, and has rental locations in Orlando and Miami. They can give you advice that should be helpful.  Greater Outdoor ATV Adventures and ATV Off-Road Adventure Tours in Ocala will take you on ATV tours that cater both to beginners and experts, which might be the easiest solution. Let me know how it works out!

Moped Rentals on the West Coast
Asked by Ken Weiss on February 16, 2009
Q: We will be visiting the west coast of Florida next week. We were wondering if there are any areas where we can rent mo-peds or scooters and explore the area that way. Thank you for any information.
A: Hi Ken,
Absolutely. I’m going to give you a few examples – but the west coast is a BIG area, so what I suggest is figuring out where you’d like to go and then just Google “moped rental” and the city’s name.
The only scooter rental on Siesta Key (click on the cities’ names I have highlighted for info on them) is Siesta Sports Rentals, 6551 Midnight Pass Road, Sarasota, (941)346-1797.
Englewood Bait House offers boat rentals, boat tours, customized trips, party boat, water sports, kayak and moped rentals and private fishing charters. They are located at 1450 Beach Road, Englewood (941) 475-4511.
Island Bike Shop has locations in Marco Island, Naples, and Ave Maria, so that gives you a few more choices.
Have a great time!

Spring Training Hints
Asked by Dan Graham on February 15, 2009
Q: I would like to attend Cincinnati Reds spring training for the first time and I was wondering if you could recommend web sites to help plan the trip, or any other suggestions you can make. Thanks,Dan
A: Hi Dan,
This is my favorite website for Florida Spring Training. It has a map on the home page of all of the teams and their locations. Just click on the Cincinnati Reds and their entire schedule will pop up. You can get tickets through a telephone number on the site or on the Cincinnati Reds site.
You might consider premium seats since they’re only a few bucks more. These are some Red’s prices: 2009 Ticket Prices
Box Seats $16 (Premium, $18); Reserved $14 (Premium, $16); General Admission $9
(Premium, $11). You might also consider catching a Pirates' game in nearby Bradenton just to shake things up.
Fun fact: You may find yourself close to some of the famous players since unlike in regular season, they share the same walkways and paths as the fans.
I would advise checking out Sarasota while you’re there. The Ringling Museum is located there, and off the coast you’ll find several islands including Siesta Key, whose beaches are composed of 99% quartz and have ranked among the top beaches in the world.
And get a move-on to make sure you don’t miss out -- the first game is only NINE days away!
Have fun.

Florida Football Fun
Asked by martina murphy on February 13, 2009
Q: my boyfriend and myself are coming to florida mid sept 2009 and i would love to surprise him by taking him to an american football game as he plays rugby back in northern ireland where we are from and he would really love to see a game. Can you give me any information how i go about gettin tickets, the best place to go to see a game etcthank you
A: Hi Martina,
How I love Ireland! Make sure you pack sunscreen – you’re likely to collect a lot more rays than usual.
Several exciting college teams are based in Florida, but the University of Florida Gators (based in Gainesville) won the national championships in 2008 and the atmosphere at the games is sheer madness, so I’m thinking that might be the most fun for you to see. (As I remember, the Irish are stout fans of fun.) Book early – their games sell out quickly.
The Florida State University Seminoles are the next most popular college team, and then you’ve got the pro teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins. Just click on any of the links I’ve provided and you can buy tickets online.
Have a great time (and please pack a good Irish event horse in your bags for me).

Mucho Marathons in 2010
Asked by Pam on February 10, 2009
Q: I'm interested in running a marathon next year. What marathons are offered in Florida in 2010?
A: Hi Pam,
Good for you! My sister is a marathon runner, and I have learned running a marathon is a huge goal and a huge accomplishment.
The year starts off with the Disney Marathon. The 16th-annual Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend took place January 8-11, 2009, and drew more than 45,000 runners. Registration for the 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, which will take place January 7-10, 2010, opened on January 12, 2009.
Click here for more info about the Florida Gulf Beaches Marathon, in January, which starts on the Clearwater Causeway, the ING Miami Marathon in January, and Pensacola’s Blue Angel Marathon in February.
Florida Running and Triathlon has info about more races. Have fun and remember, NEVER give up.

Snorkeling and SNUBA in the Florida Keys
Asked by Sheree on February 10, 2009
Q: My family, including my 11 year old are traveling to the keys the 1st week of june. We are interested in snuba and snorkeling. Can you recommend the best places for these? Thanks
A: Hi Sheree,
The largest living barrier reef in North America parellels the Florida Keys, so the snorkeling is spectacular on most of the islands. I particularly like Islamorada because it is not crowded or commercial and you have the sites to yourself.
I had a good experience with Holiday Isle Dive Shop there. Here is a link to an article I wrote about a SCUBA trip I did with them (with contact info included). They had some awesome snorkeling sites.
I was going to try SNUBA in Duck Key at Tilden’s SCUBA Center but I had a car breakdown and ran out of time – but it looked cool there.
Make sure to check out Bahia Honda State Park. It is rich in wildlife and stunning – the PERFECT place to snorkel. If you plan to camp make reservations.
Hope you dive into a boatload of fun (okay, that was marginally clever; my apologies).

Jet Ski Jaunt from Miami to Bimini
Asked by Missy on February 09, 2009
Q: We read about a jet ski trip from Miami to Bimini but can't remember where...........it consists of renting jet skis in Miami, driving to Bimini with a 'tag boat' to follow for safety or mechanical reasons, and then a return to Miami. My husband and daughter are wanting to do this for his 50th and her 16th birthday next year. Have you heard about this or can point me in the right direction? Thanks!
A: Hi Missy,
That sounds like SUCH a cool adventure. Can I go?
I couldn’t find a company offering the tour, but this is what you may be recalling. The following is from Jetski.com: “WaterTop Unlimited recently completed the company’s exclusive, all-inclusive Bimini Road Rally e-venture with a full field of participants. PWC enthusiasts from nine states participated in the one-of-a-kind PWC Jet Ski adventure, riding from North Miami Beach across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamian islands of Bimini. The 2008 Bimini Road Rally included a full field of 20 PWC Jet Ski riders and eight Formula Boat owners and crew.”
I did find this cool adventure. With Jet Ski Tours of Miami you can “Ride Yamaha wave runners and visit a total of six islands, this is a great tour that everyone will enjoy. Catch a glimpse of dolphins playing or a peaceful manatee resting in our fabulous Florida waters.”
I called the folks at et Ski Tours of Miami but they were out of the office. You might try them and see if they can find a private guide that will take you on the trip.
Good luck!

Manatees Versus Dolphins
Asked by Mary Campbell on February 03, 2009
Q: Lauren, We won't have time to do both on our vacation, so I need to make a choice. Which do you prefer, swimming with manatees or swimming with dolphins? Thanks for your help.
A: Hi Mary,
I'll explain about them both so you can make a choice for yourself.
When you swim with dolphins you are swimming with athletic, trained animals performing specific behaviors in a structered enviroment.
For example, the trainer will have you hold out your left hand and rub the dolphin's back as it swims by, and in return it will get a piece of fish. When I swam with the dolphins, I stroked them, shook "hands, gave a command, "kissed" one, had a splash fight and was pulled around the lagoon by two (the most fun). All of these things are done on command for a short period of time.
When you swim with the manatees, you are swimming with wild animals -- big, huge, slow, gentle animals. There are strict rules to make sure you aren't harassing them (like, you can't try to ride them or chase them) but outside of that, it's whatever you and the manatees want to do. They are curious and sweet.
I have had them pull on my wetsuit, show me their tummies to be scratched and follow ME around. This, for me, is more fun, because it IS unscripted. The manatee is there for no reason except that he thinks it's fun to visit. It also involves a long boat ride out onto the river. The whole thing is natural and out in the boonies, which is more "me."
The only down side is that because you are in the water so long with the manatees (for me, over two hours every time I've gone) that you can get cold even with a wetsuit. if you go, bring a thermos of warm drinks and tons of clothes to bundle up in afterwards.
Have a great time, whatever you choose.

Horseback Riding on Beach
Asked by Catherine Moffit on January 26, 2009
Q: Lauren I will be in Melbourne from the 17th to 25th of Feb. I would like to know where to find a riding stable for a 1/2 day to full day of riding one that would take you along the ocean even if it;s only for a play in the water Thanks Catherine
A: Hi Catherine, I found a place about an hour from Melbourne. Hutchinson Island is one of the few places in Florida that allows horses on the beach and St. Lucie County's best-known asset is its spectacularly beautiful barrier islands, boasting 21 miles of bleached white beaches edging a cobalt-blue ocean and lined with palms.

Gainesville Getway
Asked by Christy McCall on January 13, 2009
Q: Hi Lauren, I am from south Alabama... roughly four hours from Gainesville... I am trying to plan a getaway weekend for myself and the man in my life... though I would love it to be romantic... he would probably disagree... so do you have any suggestions what we could do while visiting and do you have any links to where I can reserve a room at a nice establishment near the hub of the city? Thanks again. Christy
A: Hi Christy,
Hmm, I'm laughing here, thinking of the different things you and your man might like. HE might really enjoy some University of Florida Sports Gator action (you might, too, but "romantic" it is not). What kind of game you attend depends on what time of year it is, of course. The atmosphere at the school is totally crazy, enthusiastic and fun.
What about catching a show at the Dance Alive National Ballet? It's based in Gainesville, and features "a cast of superb international dancers" and "presents ravishing classical and the most provocative of contemporary dance."
Another fun activity is a trip to the Gainesville Raceway. Since that's not exactly "snuggly" how about a stroll through Kanapaha Botanical Gardens? It boasts 16 major gardens which include a hummingbird garden, butterfly garden, rock garden, palm hammock, water gardens, the state's largest public bamboo collection and the largest herb garden in the Southeast.
Check out this video, dubbed "Florida’s Eden," for more ideas. Here are some cycling ideas. And, the Adventure Club of Gainesville always has some crazy activity going on, from chocolate tasting to kayaking to sports events, and they invite you to join them (at the very least, you should look at their calendar for ideas).
Oh, and here are links to some hotels and a little info about them. Better yet, how about a cozy bed and breakfast? Here's a list, with ratings and links.
Have fun!

Florida Snorkeling
Asked by Brian Reemtsen on January 12, 2009
Q: I am planning a trip to Florida in early March and would like to snorkel. Where would be a good place to go. I am coming from Va. and don't want to go past Lauderdale
A: Hi Brian,
As you know, North America's largest living barrier reef pretty much runs all the way from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas past Key West, so virtually all those hundreds of miles feature fabulous scuba and snorkeling - but that's farther than you want to go, so here's a boatload of other suggestions.
Here are two Northwest Florida options: Emerald Coast Scuba (850-837-0955) in Destin (famed for its white sand beaches and emerald-green waters) offers snorkeling in the Gulf. The area features numerous businesses that offer similar services.
Vortex Spring (800-342-0640) is the foremost inland Florida dive resort on the Gulf Coast and the largest diving facility in the state, and you can snorkel there, as well.
Scroll to past questions I've answered and check out the one titled "Super Snorkeling in the "Seas" of Orlando." It has LOTS of ideas and contact info. (The best idea is swimming with the wild manatees in the Crystal River, in the Three Sisters area specifically. This is a-once-in-a-lifetime experience - like, REALLY.)
Also, in past questions, you'll find one titled "Budget-Friendly Fun in Naples" with snorkeling suggestions.
Since Florida is surrounded by water and boasts roughly a zillion lakes and springs (how do you like the exact number there?) you can find good snorkeling in much of the state. I'd suggest you map out the exact route you'd like to take - west coast, east coast, Panhandle - and check out the places along the route for snorkeling.
For example, I just Goggled, Sanibel/snorkeling, and this is the first thing that came up. "Wrecks and man-made reefs help restock our waters with fish for the benefit of Scuba divers and fisherman alike. More than a dozen artificial reefs lie within a 15 mile radius of Sanibel and Captiva making these Florida barrier islands great for snorkeling and scuba diving."
You really can't miss with a Florida snorkeling trip.

Big Time Florida Bike Trip
Asked by Linda Body on January 10, 2009
Q: I want to visit Florida in April with intention of cycling north to Canada. I need a state map to plan my route and any other free cycling maps that are available. I know there are a number of cycling routes in Florida, but I can't figure out if any of them would be of use to me. Your help would be appreciated
A:

Hi Linda,

YOU are an adventure gal! Cool beans. I ride my bike a lot – but you need help from people who really know routes throughout the state. The Florida Freewheelers will be able to offer you good advice; here's their contact info. I’ve included a link to VISIT FLORIDA bike trails here (and you can get a free Florida print road map in the same place).

Happy pedaling – I really admire your spirit.

Bonnett Hunting Lodge

Q: years ago we went to Bonnett Hunting Lodge..even ate wild boar there..now I can't find any info on them please help
A:

Hi Ray,

Can you give me any more information? For instance, where in Florida? It’s is a big state, and without more hints, I’m reduced to doing what you probably already did – Googling and calling people. Here’s a list of Florida Hunts; here’s some more boar hunting info you should have, but it’s not what you’re looking for. Sorry. If you can narrow down the area, I’m happy to try again.

Discovery Diving near Pensacola
Asked by Carl Wallbank on January 04, 2009
Q: Hello, Do you know of anywhere in the Pensacola area that offer scuba diving for someone who is not certified? Something like a "discovery diver". Many thanks in advance, Carl
A:

Hi Carl,

I called a number of Pensacola Dive Services and the area just doesn’t lend itself well to SCUBA for first-timers – even though it is a great place for those with a little experience.

However, 48 miles from Pensacola you’ll find Destin, famed for its white sand beaches and emerald-green waters, and it IS suited to “Discovery Dives.” Emerald Coast Scuba (850-837-0955) will insure you start off on the right fin with their Discover Scuba Experience. You’ll experience a real dive, exploring the Gulf’s waters -- teeming with fish and sea life -- in a safe, non-threatening atmosphere.

Vortex Spring(800-342-0640) is another option. Mapquest says it’s 90 miles and about an hour and a half from Pensacola. They are dedicated to serving divers of all levels, from “never-evers” to those who have made Scuba a lifestyle.   It’s the foremost inland Florida dive resort on the Gulf Coast and the largest diving facility in the state.

Happy Diving!

Paragliding in Florida
Asked by RT on December 26, 2008
Q: thinking of finishing my h2 rating this spring. Is there any para towing in Florida as well?
A:

Hi RT,

Florida is a great place for you to finish your H2 (a hang gliding rating). Many of the top pilots come here to train so you can soak up LOTS of knowledge, and spring FL flying is legendary so you can snag LOTS of air time. I fly mainly out of Quest in Groveland, but there is also beautiful Wallaby Ranch near Disney and Florida Ridge by LaBelle that will be holding a competition this April/May.

And YES, bring your paraglider. GrayBird AirSports operates out of at Dunnellon Airport, one hour north of Orlando. It caters to paraglider pilots wanting to tow up to our beautiful, soft, huge Florida thermals.

Come fly with us!

Paintball Pain?
Asked by Bill Schell on December 25, 2008
Q: I'm interested in paintball, however, I'm told that without the right 'gear' that it really hurts? and the right gear seems 'expensive???
A: Hi Bill,
I was worried when I first went to play paintball this summer, but it's fine if your preparation is okay. Most of the places will rent you everything you need, like the mask and the marker. The sport is really safe --  statistically, safer than bowling -- but you'll want to follow the rules. The mask will protect your face.
The way to keep from getting bruised is to layer on loose clothing. Loose is much more important than thick, because it takes some of the "kick" out of the paintball. A pair of sweatpants and sweat shirt will do the trick. I did play with some young (foolish) kids who played with bare skin, but they had some impressive welts by the end.
The place I went to, MI Incorporated in St. Augustine, sold cover-alls for something like four bucks. Here's a link to a blog I wrote about it. Anyhow, it's certainly not expensive and it is SO exciting. Ha, the kids I played with even ended up being nice to me instead of blasting me in a team-effort like they'd promised!
Happy hunting!

June Spectator Sports (Baseball!)
Asked by Nichola on December 14, 2008
Q: hello lauren, we are coming to Florida in June, and we would love to catch a game while we're there. It seems like there's an amazing atmosphere at the sporting events over there, so i would love to book tickets for baseball or basketball or football... any ideas of how i can book? we dont understand any of the games, just want to soak up that atmosphere!Thank youNichola
A: Hi Nichola, Well, there’s no football in June, ditto for basketball, and hockey ends mid April, but it will be baseball season. The Tampa Bay Rays were the 2008 American League Champions so there’s lots of excitement surrounding that team. Here are links to their June schedule, their website, and about Tropicana Field, where they are based. Here's info about the Florida Marlins, their schedule, and Dolphin Stadium, where they are based. You can buy tickets right on the websites.

Baseball is actually a good sport for you to go see because it’s very easy to understand. Look it up online to learn the rules and it will be more fun for you. The traditions are interesting, too. Most of the players “chew” because it is such a nerve-wracking game for the players. Anyhow, check it out. You’ll have a blast. Lauren

Hi Tosh!

Here are links to VISIT FLORIDA articles that have been written about baseball spring training – 20 of them.

Here is a link to teams that hold their spring training within striking distance of Orlando. Here’s a link to a site with a map highlighting where all 17 teams play – very helpful!

Saying Bye-Bye to Orlando Boredom Blues
Asked by Matthew Graham on November 22, 2008
Q: We go town to visit my wife's parents in Edgewater every so often and usually spend the time sitting around watching the grass grow. Are there any adventurous activities in the Edgewater or Orlando regions that we can do with my wife's elderly partents??? Perhaps a pontoon boat jungle tour or some kind or canoe or kayak eco-tour. The 'rents are still able to kayak. Anything that would get them out of the house and enjoying nature would be fantastic.
A:
Hi Matthew,

Say goodbye to gawking at the greenery in the yard, something I’m sure you’ll miss sorely – NOT!  Check out my blog on Orlando area adventures here. It includes ideas like snorkeling at Discovery Cove, floating over the orange groves and swamps in a hot air balloon, biking down the West Orange Trail, taking a discovery flight in a sailplane, exploring the forest on horseback, and more.

Key Largo/Islamorada Biking
Asked by Rick Burgdoff on November 10, 2008
Q: Were going to keylargo/Islamorada on vacation in our rv and was wondering if there was anywhere to ride mountain bikes there?
A:
Hi Rick,

You should take a ride on the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. Key Largo in the Northern Keys is the longest section of the bike path, beginning at MM 106 and connecting into the Village of Islamorada at MM 82. Here’s the state park link to info about it; here’s a link Florida Bicycle Association information about the ride (scroll down to the part about the Heritage Trail – it’s good stuff). Okay, it’s not mountain biking, but it’s really pretty. Here’s a link to other bike trails in the area; some are off-road, some are not. Key Largo Bikes @ 305-451-1910 sells mountain bikes so they might be able to give you some first hand advice on what the coolest trails are.

I have a blog coming out about my trip to Islamorada in a few days; be sure to check it out. While you’re there I’d suggest you go snorkeling and make sure you go to Bahia Honda State Park.

Happy pedaling!

Lightning Strikes (update)
Asked by sandy on November 05, 2008
Q: We will be attending the Tampa Bay Lightning vs Red Wings NHL game on November 13. Our 2 sons, age 11 and 9 are true Canadian hockey nuts and can hardly wait for the day! Are there any game day activities, open to public team skates or opportunities for autographs that would make it a day to remember for them?
A: Hi Sandy,
There are LOTS of game day activities! The first 10,000 fans at the Nov. 13 game will receive free Mike Smith Mini Bobble Heads… not quite what you had in mind? How about this? The Lightning Energy Team will be in the plaza with stilt walkers, jugglers, tumblers, face painters and sports enthusiasts.
Make sure you arrive a couple of hours early. There will be blow up slides the kids can ride, human jousting, games, and the chance for the kids to practice shooting pucks (not on the ice). The game starts at 7:30 but the pre-skate starts at 5:30. Apparently there are really no opportunities for autographs -- sorry!
Have fun,

Super Snorkeling in the "Seas" of Orlando
Asked by sandy on November 05, 2008
Q: We will be staying in Orlando November 8-18. We would like to take our sons, ages 11 and 9, snorkeling. We have only snorkeled once before ourselves. Where would you recommend? We are willing to make it a day trip if necessary, but would prefer a shorter drive if possible.
A:
Hi Sandy,

If you want to go snorkeling in Florida’s springs or rivers, you can expect a pretty full day trip from Orlando… but there are several options IN Orlando. Check out this VISIT FLORIDA article by Doug Kelly!

Here’s an excerpt: “The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion at Epcot contains one of the world's largest aquariums with a complete coral reef inhabited by sharks, tropical fish, rays and dolphins -- in all, more than 65 species. An imaginative mix of fantasy and real sea life, the major facility is dedicated to man's relationship with the underwater world. Whimsical and visually stunning, the attraction magically delivers ocean conservation messages. For snorkelers, the Seas Aqua Tour provides an immersive plunge into the aquarium. Native Floridians and visitors alike delight in watching the famous sea cows – the Florida manatee.” Or “Typhoon Lagoon, where water enthusiasts can snorkel in Shark Reef, a 362,000-gallon saltwater pool. You can go fin-to-fin, so to speak, with exotic marine life including people-friendly butterfly fish, French angels, tangs, groupers and even nurse sharks.”

Cool, huh? And Discovery Cove, also in Orlando, offers other great snorkeling options.

The Rainbow River is popular for swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, and kayaking, if you feel like getting back-to-nature. I personally think swimming with the wild manatees in the Crystal River is the absolute best thing to do in Florida. It will take much of the day but I truly think it is worth it. It doesn’t even cost much!

Just type in “snorkeling” in the VISIT FLORIDA search engine in you want more options and info – there’s lots of it!

Wishing you fishie kissies,

Lauren

My Favorite Things...
Asked by Steve on October 29, 2008
Q: I was wondering what the 3 best attractions you would recommend?
A:
Hi Steve,

Since I don’t know where you’ll be staying, or what type of adventures you like, I’m just going to give you MY three favorites, which are swimming with the wild manatees, driving a race car at Daytona, and – I know this one sounds weird, because it’s so simple – riding a mountain bike at the Santos Trailhead. You can find out more by clicking on the links in the previous sentence. Scroll through my old questions for more info on the mountain biking near Ocala.

In case these suggestions don’t tickle your belly, have a quick scroll through my old blogs (just hit “read all”). There are blogs that focus on the Orlando area, Miami, Pensacola, etc… so they might be lots more help to you. Florida also has some of the best sports action anywhere, since it hosts spring training for 17 baseball teams, has great college and pro football, and exciting, off-the-beaten track events like the X Games and BMX racing. It just depends on what you like, where you’ll be staying, and what time of year you’ll be visiting.

Tips for Newbie SCUBA Divers
Asked by Rose on October 20, 2008
Q: I'll be staying in the Clearwater area. I wanted to go scuba diving, i'm a beginner. Can you give us any pointers, thanks
A:
Hi Rose,

You’ll LOVE SCUBA. My diving is limited to the Florida Keys, so I called Mike at – what else? – Mike’s Private SCUBA lessons, to ask about diving in the Clearwater area (check out the pictures on his website; they’re pretty cool). He said the diving in Clearwater is suitable for newbies, and suggested you go out with “Tanks-A lot-Dive Charters.” They have a boat where you can simply walk off of the back, instead of having to roll off of the side of it which can be scary the first time you do it. The boat also features a big ladder that’s easy to climb back up when your dive is finished, and is the only Coast Guard certified dive boat in the area.

Here’s a link to my article about my experience on a resort-course (discover SCUBA) dive in Islamorada. It will give you an idea of what to expect plus tips to help make your experience better.

I DO have one more hint that’s not in the article. If you are going with someone with a mustache, he may have to shave off the top half of it to make the mask seal correctly (my husband had this problem). It’s miserable to have water seeping in over your eyes the whole time.

Congratulations on taking the plunge!

Budget-Friendly Fun in Naples
Asked by kerry on October 15, 2008
Q: We are planning a girls trip for the last weekend of April or the first weekend of May. We are in Naples and would like to stay within 3 hours of there....any suggestions? We (unfortunately) have to be budget conscience... Thanks!!
A:

Hi Kerry,

A girl trip sounds great! To start with for suggestions, scroll down through questions that I have previously answered. There’s one titled “Port Charlotte Vacation…” that has lots of suggestions about nearby activities. Port Charlotte is north of Naples, so some of the activities (like swimming with the manatees) are too far for you, but many are not. Lots of the activities aren’t that cheap, though.

Fortunately, you have some fun, low cost options. The question above the Port Charlotte one is titled “Hiking the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail…” and might make a good day trip for you.

Basically, anything that involves a park and biking, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, or the like will be inexpensive. Here’s a list of parks in Naples, including BRIGG'S NATURE CENTER which offers naturalist guided canoe and boat trips, canoe rentals, and THE CONSERVANCY INC. whose facilities include a hands- on science museum, animal clinic for injured wildlife, boat tours, lectures, and nature trails.

The Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park is a popular seashore destination in Naples, and has been rated as one of the best beaches in the nation. The beach is popular for sunbathing, swimming, beachcombing, snorkeling, and picnicking. Snorkeling is generally inexpensive since the equipment is so minimal and almost anyone can do it. Fishing at the beach along Wiggins Pass, where swimming is not allowed, is another popular activity.

You are right next to the Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve, too. The Everglades are fantastic for kayaking – and personally, I prefer that to an airboat ride.

Here is a link to events in Naples. Just scroll to the month you are coming. They have everything from jazz festivals to foot races.

Have fun!

Kitesurfing Concerns
Asked by Jamie on October 15, 2008
Q: I'm interested in trying kitesurfing, but pretty scared of the water. On the first lessons, are you actually in the water? I think I could handle being in the very shallow water, but I don't want to try it if I have to get all the way out there. What do you think?
A:
Hi Jamie,

By the end of my first lesson, I WAS actually in the water. Wait, keep reading – it was totally shallow! One of the features of a good kite boarding training site IS shallow water – like the Flats in the Florida Keys that has miles of the stuff. You can pretty much just stand up any time you’d like. So I wouldn’t let that influence you too much.

The real danger is the DRY stuff—that is, land or obstacles that you could get dragged into. The Florida Keys are really good in this regard, too, because you can train so far away from land (in the shallow water). More dangerous kiteboarding conditions would be close to shore, with winds blowing in from the ocean towards the beach. A better wind condition would be winds that are blowing crossways to the beach, that would tend to take you parallel to the beach, not into it.

The progression of a first lesson usually goes something like this: Start with a ground school, where you learn basics on dry land, like how to lay out the kite, conditions, and safety. From there, you’ll fly a little “trainer kite” on the beach. The trainer kite is a stable, easy-to-fly wing, and you aren’t hooked into it. My next step was to get into the water and perform “body drags,” where I got pulled through the water by a kite without the complication of trying to stand on a board. It’s CRAZY fun and addictive!

You should try it. Just go to a good school like the Kite House in Key West  or Seven Kiteboarding, based on Islamorada.Wherever you go, make sure you ask about where you’ll be learning plus about their safety record.

45 Swimmers Need BIG Pool (and Lodging)!
Asked by Heather on September 08, 2008
Q: I am looking for an olympic sizedpool and accomodations for a team of 45 people to train Dec 28-04Jan. Can you assist?
A:
Hi Heather,

Wow! Sounds like you might be a tad busy on your trip to Florida. The National Training Center Aquatic Center, located in Clermont close to where I live, is the first place that comes to mind. It is a state-of-the-art facility like no other in the Central Florida area with community programming and training opportunities for athletes of all levels. However, their pool is bigger than Olympic size – so I am not sure if it will suit you. If they don’t have exactly what you are looking for they can probably recommend a good spot for training. Click here for contact and other information Here is info and ratings for hotels in the Clermont area.

Here are some other leads:

Lake Worth Municipal Swimming Pool (in Lake Worth) features an Olympic size swimming facility. For questions regarding the pool contact Ben Smith at 561-662-9856. Its website says “Large groups wanting to swim need to reserve a time one week prior to usage, by filling out a Pool Facility Application form.”

Venice Villas offers efficiency and one-bedroom units located on Venice's Golden Beach with “all the amenities you need for the perfect vacation including an Olympic size pool and a beautiful beach.” You can contact the rental management company for Venice Villas at 800-224-8455.

The Radisson Aventura Beach Resort in North Miami Beach can be reached at (305)932-2233, or toll free at (800)327-6363. It is a full service oceanfront resort that offers an on-premises ocean view restaurant, lounge, exercise room, shopping promenade with hair salon (just in case your swimmers need to have their hair curled…) plus Olympic size and kiddy pools.

The Sea View Hotel in Bal Harbour can be reached at(305) 866-4441 or(800) 447-1010.Built in 1948, The Sea View is a 15-story European-style beachfront hotel and resort, located in upscale Bal Harbour Village. The hotel is directly across from the world-famous Bal Harbour Shops and close to recreational facilities, and features a restaurant, lounge, pool bar, snack bar, Olympic-size heated pool, cabanas, gift shop, valet and self-parking, room service, valet/laundry and turn-down service.

The Riu Pan American Ocean Resort in Sunny Isles Beach can be reached at (305) 932-1100 or(800) 327-5678. It is located on the northern tip of Miami Beach only 20 minutes from the Fort Lauderdale Airport and 30 minutes from the Miami International Airport, and features two restaurants, coffee shop, pool side cafe, lounge, pool bar, 4 lighted tennis courts, heated Olympic-size pool, fitness center, game room, cabanas, beauty salon, gift shop, guest laundry room, complimentary valet and self-parking, room service, valet/laundry, turn-down service and complimentary cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, afternoon tea, and newspaper.

The Sea Breeze Hotel in Miami Beach, can be reached at (305) 940-6600 or (305) 945-3958. Located on the beach, this hotel offers large rooms with a beautiful view. It also offers a restaurant, lounge, pool bar, Olympic-size fresh-water and saltwater pools, fitness center, game room, gift shop, room service and complimentary self-parking.

The prices and atmosphere of these places vary enormously – but again, I am not sure of what exactly you have in mind. The National Training Center in Clermont may be your best bet.

Good luck, and let me know how it comes out!

Q: We are planning our trip to florida in april 2009. how can we get some tickets for an american football and basketball match during the time period of april 04. - april 18th in the area of Miami, Fort Myers, Tampa or Orlando. Best Regards from Germany
A:
Hi Gerhard,
I hate to tell you that you will be missing both the football and basketball seasons—ouch!  However, I have listed several contacts below. You can check their calendars for other sporting events that may interest you. Also, one of them may decide to host an off-season football or basketball game. Make sure you check closer to your trip date as they will add events over time.
Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee is a 220-acre facility that plays host to over 170 amateur and professional sporting events each year.
The UCF Arena on the University of Central Florida campus in Orlando is the home to the UCF Knights men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams, and also hosts commencements, concerts, and many other events.
Florida Citrus Sports (FCSports) is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to increasing community spirit and pride, promoting tourism, stimulating economic development and ultimately benefiting charities, educational institutions and the quality of life in Central Florida through its five signature events: The Capital One Bowl, the Champs Sports Bowl, the Spherion Orlando Citrus Parade presented by Delta Air Lines and the OUC Half Marathon and 5K.

Here is a link to stadiums in Tampa; each hosts many events/games each year.
Good luck, and once again, my apologies.

Thumbs up on SCUBA?
Asked by Paul on August 17, 2008
Q: Greetings!I will be vacationing in Vero Beach the second week of September. I am looking for a good outfit that will take people out for SCUBA diving? I am an open-water certified diver and would like something fun :-)For some reason, I did not find a lot on the web. If someone local can recommend an outfit, that would be great! I know you have a list but I was hoping for a thumbs up on one in the area (if you can do that - if you cannot, that is ok!)Be Well.Paul.
A:
Hi Paul,

I called my friend Matthew for advice since he is an avid diver. (I love SCUBA, but have only done a couple of shallow dives.) He was in the Virgin Islands on a dive when I reached him this morning! He and his wife like to dive with the Scuba Club at West Palm Beach  -- he said it was "fantastic." That’s about 85 miles south of Vero. While I know that outfits closer to Vero surely offer quality trips, this is the only one that I have personal knowledge of in the area.

What they do there – thanks to the Gulf Stream -- is drift diving. The Scuba Club’s website warns that the reef structure doesn’t feature the striking coral formations you can find in the Keys, but that instead, it has a low profile bottom topography with deep undercuts and ledges. It also says that it DOES feature great visibility (normally 70-100 feet), has lots of marine life, and doesn’t tend to be crowded. The area is home to HUGE numbers of sea turtles, and also has several wreck dives you can try. Matthew added that you should go when the water is warm-- no problem in September!

Here’s their website. If that’s too far for you, perhaps they can recommend another operation.

Sailing Resorts
Asked by Norman on August 14, 2008
Q: I am looking for a sailing resort that offers multiple kinds of sailboats to just hop on and go that is inclusive with the resort fees. Any suggestions for such a resort in Florida?
A:
Hi Norman,

The Key Lime Sailing Club offers bayfront cottages in the Florida Keys. Its website promises “white sand and palms - your own dock and boat ramp….Located directly on the bay! Enjoy Key Largo sunsets from one of the area's most intimate settings... Secluded, serene and an easy walk to dining and dancing. It's perfect! Come inside and take a look at our unique little hideaway. We'd love to have you stay with us! Our 22 foot Catalina or O'Day single-masted sailboats are perfect for cruising the calm waters of Florida Bay. Just grab your cooler, walk to our dock and point the bow into the horizon. Explore the Keys in style! Leave and return when you like...after all, you don't want to be tied to any schedule when you're on vacation.”

If that doesn’t sound appealing to you, here is a link to hotels that have some association with sailing or marinas– the services vary depending on which one you’re looking at.

Wishing you smooth sailing!

Besides the Theme Parks....
Asked by Sylvie on August 04, 2008
Q: Hi Lauren, We will be traveling to Florida next week for two weeks, with our 4 kids ages 9,14,15 and 16. We are looking for something special/different to do beside the theme parks which we all did,we go every year. We need new ideas can you help us? We come come Montreal Province of Quebec, Canada. Thanks,
A: Hi Sylvie,

I assume you’ll be in the Orlando area (since you said you do the theme parks every year). Check out my blog on Orlando Adventures here for some new ideas. A tandem hang gliding ride, a balloon ride, biking, or a visit to the cable park at the Orlando Watersports Complex might be fun. My mother took my two teenage nephews to swim with the wild manatees last week (check out my video). That IS the coolest thing to do in Florida, but it’s not a great time of year for it, because there are not as many manatees in the river in the summer. The boys did get to touch a couple of manatees – though, and the river is beautiful. I have lots of information about it in an older blog, so you can look at it for contact info if you’re interested.

Cheers!

Q: Have you been skydiving yet?
A: Hi Carolyn,

Yes, this April. It was really fun, though it was pretty wild to watch the other skydivers tumble out of the plane. Kind of WRONG looking.

I wrote a huge blog post about it because I was so stoked. Check it out here

So, are you asking because you want to go, or because you have discovered some other cool place I can go?

Video Camera Housing
Asked by Aidan Bell on July 25, 2008
Q: I am emailing from England.I will be holidaying in the Keys in mid September and wish to hire an underwater housing for my video camera for two days.Could you please suggest some local companies that I could get in touch with regarding this? With many thanks,Aidan Bell
A: Hi Aidan,
I used to live in England! How fun you will be visiting us here.

Budget Video Rentals in Miami rents underwater housing. You can email them at: BudgetVidRentals@aol.com or call them at 800-772-1111. Here's their website. If they are too far away for you, they can probably refer you to someone closer to your location.

You probably know this, but these type of rentals are pricey. For my surfing video and manatee video the camera crew actually just wrapped heavy plastic bags around the camera (much cheaper, though my husband said I should remind you to use clear bags). Obviously that would not work for great depths – and I am certainly no camera expert. Have a great trip to the wild, wonderful Keys.

Running in the Orlando Area
Asked by Richard Bruce on July 22, 2008
Q: Hi,I will be on vacation in Orlando in October and as I am a keen runner I was wondering if there were any trails / routes that you would suggest I try.Thanks,Richard.
A:
Hi Richard,

Here's a link to a boatload of articles about trails in the Orlando area, so you can choose the ones that appeal most to you. There are lots of state parks – so many that you can explore a new area every time if you’d like.

I personally use the trailhead at Lake Minneola in Clermont most often, since I live right by it. It’s hilly and about 7.5 miles to Killarney Station, and connects to the West Orange Trail. Here's more info about the West Orange Trail. Lots of the triathletes that train out of Clermont use the path.

Happy running. How wonderful that you're staying fit.

White Water Near Gainesville
Asked by sunny on July 07, 2008
Q: We are visiting florida for next 6 days. What is good place from gainsville to go for white water rafting? thank you
A:
Hi Sunny,

Big Shoals Public Lands is a 3,772-acre parcel of cooperatively managed public land that features the largest whitewater rapids in Florida. The park has 28 miles of wooded trails for daytime recreational use. Bird watching, picnicking, bicycling, hiking, canoeing, kayaking and horseback riding are encouraged. Here’s some info about nearby White Springs. MapQuest says White Springs is 1 hour 4 minutes and 65 miles from Gainesville – not too bad.

I spoke with a woman at the Big Shoals Park (Phone: 386-397-2733) and she said you can raft there, but only if you bring your own. However, you CAN rent a canoe or kayak from American Canoe Adventures in White Springs (Phone: 386-397-1309) and run the rapids on them.

Florida Whitewater Rafting says that “it offers canoe, kayak and whitewater rafting trips on rivers, creeks, streams and lakes near Florida. You can experience rafting trips ranging from a brief two hour tour to a wilderness adventure lasting several days.” Their number is 352-759-3483. The man I spoke with there a few months ago said that they run trips around the Georgia/FL line. Their season runs from mid-May until early September. I hope this helps!

High Springs Area Riverside Camping
Asked by Gina on July 05, 2008
Q: I am looking to travel to the High Springs area and am interested in riverside camping or cabin rentals
A:
Hi Gina,
Central North Florida is a cool area. Here are a couple of places that might suit you.

Ginnie Springs Outdoors LLC offers swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving in seven freshwater springs, plus canoeing and tubing in the Santa Fe River. They have waterfront, primitive, electrical and group campsites with tables and charcoal grills, plus bathhouses with hot showers as well as other amenities.   (If this place was called “Gina Springs,” it would be PERFECT.)

Blue Springs Park, Inc. is located at (how did you guess?)Blue Springs, on the Santa Fe River. They also offer canoeing, tubing, hiking, and more. Its campground caters to both full hookup and primitive campers.

Have a great trip!

Mountain Biking in Ocala
Asked by diane hickok on June 30, 2008
Q: Can you tell me about mountain biking trails in the Ocala area?
A:

Hi Diane,
You're in luck! It’s a short trek to the Santos Trailhead in Belleview from Ocala (less than 20 minutes). It features horse trails, hiking trails, and mountain biking trails that meander through the pines. The horse trails and mountain bike trails are separate, which makes it safer for both humans and equines.

The trails are well designed and well marked according to user type and skill level.  Some are simple enough for families that include little kids, but it’s also a great place for the advanced rider to polish their technical skills. Bathrooms, water, picnic tables, a bike wash, and camping are available. Here’s a website with more information about the trails, including directions.

You can even rent a bike at the Santos Trailhead Bike Shop. They have organized rides and events if you’d like some company. Check them out here

Helmets are required, and remember your insect repellent and plenty of water. Enjoy!

PS: Here’s a Visit Florida guide to bike trails around the state if you’re interested in pedaling other areas.

Hiking the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail
Asked by josef augustin on June 23, 2008
Q: I am looking for info., re. walking around Lake Okeechoee.
A:
Hi Josef,

You’ll love hiking the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail! As you probably know, the trail circles Lake Okeechobee, which is the second largest freshwater lake in the contiguous United States. The 110 mile trail sits atop the Herbert Hoover Dike, and features an array of views, from scenic lakeside to working agricultural landscapes. It also features an abundance of wildlife as well as birds such as herons and egrets. The fishing ROCKS.

There are about a million (well, maybe not quite that many) places to access the trail. Check out the US Army Corps of Engineers website here; it has maps of the access points and lots more information, too.

Click here to see Visit Florida articles about the trail.

Remember to keep an eye on the sky if you’re going out in summer months. Lightning storms can sneak up on you with little warning – and we have lots of them in the summer. Also remember your insect repellent and plenty of water.

Have a great time!

(Upcoming Headline) Port Charlotte Vacation wins UK Woman Best-Mum Award
Asked by mum on June 23, 2008
Q: Hi, We are holidaying in florida from the UK starting next sunday 29th june until 12th July staying near Port charlotte. If you could give me some exciting suggestions to keep my 2 sons, 21 and 23 happy I could win the best mum award. They are car orientated, keen on excitement, usual boy stuff! as a middle-aged mum i am very taken with manatee swimming, they look so loveable. Is it poss to do this anywhere near where we are staying? thanks so much.
A:
Hi Mum,

I can practically see the mum-of-the-century award sitting on your mantle already!

First, thanks for being so specific. Knowing where you are staying, your ages, the time of year and your basic interests makes it a zillion times easier for me.

So your boys like excitement! Try hang gliding at the Florida Ridge, outside of La Belle. It’s east of Fort Meyers, and SE of Port Charlotte, about one hour (54 miles) away. Click here for more information about Florida Ridge, and go to their “tandem sky rides” page. Here’s an article I wrote about hang gliding so you have a better idea of what to expect.

In the summer we tend to get thunderstorms in the afternoon, so you should book this adventure for the morning. The Florida Ridge is a quality operation (I’ve competed out of their facility several times). The La Belle area is sparsely populated.

How about hooking a big one? The Gulf of Mexico is renowned for its deep sea fishing, because it’s one of the prime migratory routes for a variety of species, and in Florida you can find good fishing often just a few miles offshore. Here’s some general info about fishing in the gulf, and here’s a guide to tons of places near Port Charlotte with details about the services that each one provides.

Parasailing is a spectacular way to see the world in a new perspective. Here is a list of the many area businesses that offer it.  Here’s some info about parasailing from my blog

If your boys are keen on cars it is a good bet they will be keen on wave runners (also known as jet skis), too. I was amazed at how fun it was to bounce across the waves when I tried it. Here are some places you can rent them.

Ace Performers promises you can learn to windsurf in one hour with on super-wide boards with a seasoned pro. It’s located in Fort Myers, 37 minutes (28 miles) away.

Offshore Sailing and Power School at Pink Shell Beach Resort & Spa and South Seas Island Resort provides sailing and boating learning vacations. It’s also located in Fort Myers.

I absolutely adore the manatees. They are so curious and are the cutest animals on the planet. To swim with wild manatees you need to go to the Crystal River/Homosassa area. It’s strictly regulated and that is literally the only place in the USA that you can swim with them. Crystal River is quite a ways; just shy of three hours and around 171 miles, almost due north of Port Charlotte, right up the coast.

There won’t be as many manatees there at this time of year because they gather in the river to feed in the winter, but there are a few pods of manatees that live in the river year round. When you make reservations ask very specifically about what kind of manatee activity you can expect. I know the people at Sunshine River Tours would give you an honest answer. Here is my blog article about my last visit there with contact information.

You can also see manatees at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, and it’s only 53 minutes (45 miles) away from P.C.

I know; seeing manatees is not the same thing as getting cuddly with them. However, Sarasota is truly beautiful and at Mote, as their website says, you can “explore the secrets of the sea with touch pools, shark, dolphin, manatee and sea turtle exhibits and over 100 other species of marine life. Viewable working labs and high-tech interactive exhibits showcase the world-renowned research of Mote Marine Laboratory.” Here’s more info.

Here are some Visit Florida articles about Port Charlotte with a whole slew of suggestions

I hope you have a great time.

Hi Penny,

Thanks for your note. I’d love to come out for a cruise, and the Banana River isn’t too far from my home. Your place looks great. I have actually never seen dolphins in the wild (go figure!) so that sounds interesting to me. From what I read, it sounds like YOU are a huge reason that your business is so special, and that you truly care that each visitor has a quality experience. Crazy Fun in Pensacola
Asked by Alli Schuchman on June 16, 2008
Q: Lauren,I’ll be visiting the Pensacola area. Any ideas for fun activities there? Just the adults on this trip, no kids, so we can get crazy! Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance,Alli
A:
Hi Alli,

You must be reading my mind --I just visited the Pensacola area! I was in Milton to shoot a video of the “challenge ropes course” at Adventures Unlimited for Visit Florida. You should try it. In the ropes course you do scary things like climb up telephone poles and traverse logs far above the ground. It’s all totally safe but it makes for a very interesting day. You can also go tubing, kayaking or canoeing at Adventures Unlimited. The water feels fantastic in the summer! You can even camp there (like real camping, in a tent, or my sort of camping, where you rent a cabin with air conditioning). I was totally impressed with the operation. The staff was friendly and professional, the location was beautiful, and everything was clean and tidy. Here is their website, and here are some Visit Florida articles about them.

The Pensacola area features white sand beaches, and you can indulge in almost any water related activity there. There is literally so much to do in the area it is impossible to list it all, but I’ll give you some suggestions to start with.

You could try scuba diving; click here to check out some places that offer it.

If you like to whack those little white balls around, here are some places to golf

If the idea of sailing appeals to you, you can go for an afternoon or learn how at Lanier Sailing Academy.

Radical Rides will rent you a wave runner or take you parasailing.

You’ve probably heard of the Naval Aviation Museum, with its incredible Blue Angels exhibit. Admission is free – you can’t beat that with a stick! Here’s their website, and here are some Visit Florida articles about it.

Pensacola even has free live concerts on the beach. Here’s a schedule

I hope that you truly have some CRAZY fun!

Fort Lauderdale for Families

Q: I didn't do my homework, and I could just CRY. Will I regret taking my 2 sons (6 and 8) to Gay Fort Lauderdale???
A:
Hi Amanda,

Relax! Fort Lauderdale does have a large gay community, but it’s also a great place to enjoy family friendly activities. I would be very surprised if you don’t enjoy yourselves. Here’s some information on the area’s attractions and activities.

Some of my personal suggestions? I think it might be fun for you to take part in a sea turtle hatchling release. Check out my blog about the program here.

You could also take an airboat ride in the Everglades, or try a fishing trip. Let me know how it goes!

Fun Family Vacation
Asked by Mary on May 31, 2008
Q: Where can we take our 17 year old son for one last family vacation before he's off to college and career?
A:
Hi Mary,

What a wonderful idea. There are LOTS of fabulous places you can visit in Florida. Where you go depends on what you like to do. I assume you like adventurous activities since you’re writing me, but I don’t know if you like nature and lots of quiet time, or if you prefer an area with lots of activities and sports.

If you are into nature and things like canoeing and kayaking, you might visit the Panhandle. Adventures Unlimited near Milton is a great place to stay. You can even spice up the visit with their challenging ropes course!

Another area for a quiet vacation geared around nature and the outdoors is Crystal River, on the west coast of central Florida. You can swim with the wild manatees there and go scalloping and snorkeling, as well as hike, visit Indian burial grounds and kayak. Check out my video

The Orlando area has a zillion things to do if you want to experience adventures like horseback riding, sky diving, hang gliding, swimming with dolphins at Discovery Cove, and wakeboarding. Check out my blog this week for more details and website links.

Next week I’ll blog about Miami – another area for you if you’d like lots of things to do.

One of my favorite places is Key West, with its incredible snorkeling, scuba diving and sunset celebrations – but it’s hardly quiet. It all depends on what sounds good to YOU.

Islamorada in the Keys IS low key, and features brilliant sports fishing, diving, kite boarding and jet skiing.

I hope you have a great time here, and make some memories that will last a lifetime.

Horseback Riding Vacations
Asked by Kathy Scordato on April 29, 2008
Q: We love to ride horses. Are there ranches where you can stay and ride daily?
A:
Hi Kathy,
I love horses, too!

Here are a few places to get you started. Florida Eco-Safaris is located at Forever Florida and the Crescent J Ranch, 4,700 acres of pristine Florida wilderness and a working cattle ranch. Forever Florida offers an overnight ride (ride all day, camp at night). They only offer camping if you want to stay. Here’s their website

At the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park you can stay in a cabin and ride out of their facility daily.  Their website says "experience the intoxicating beauty and natural charm of North Florida as you make your way along the banks of the historic Suwannee River. With twenty+ miles of trails to ride, there is always something new to see.”

Grand Cypress Equestrian Center offers countless options to guests interested in combining top riding instruction, a luxurious and relaxing getaway, superb fine dining and more. Each and every equestrian vacation is designed personally for your needs and level of equestrian expertise.

Airboats in the Everglades
Asked by Gilson on April 10, 2008
Q: Dear Jennifer, I would like to know your opinion about what is the best, go to the Everglades National Park or there is other good option to ride with airboats like the Everglades Safari Park ?Thank you in advanceGilson
A:
Hi Gilson,

I’m not sure if you’d like to my opinion on the best way to explore the Everglades National Park or the best way to get a cool airboat tour. Here’s lots of information about the park. Airboats are not permitted in Everglades National Park, however, if you’re not set on an airboat, you can rent a canoe or kayak, and explore them that way. This personally appeals to me, since it’s quiet, very back-to-nature, and I like to get some exercise – but it may not suit YOU or the people that you’re traveling with. Here’s a link to a whole slew of articles describing different trips you can choose from

You may take an airboat ride outside park boundaries along the Tamiami Trail, at Everglades City, and between Homestead and the Ernest Coe Visitor Center off route 9336. Here’s a link to articles about a bunch of airboat companies that operate in the Everglades, so you can pick one close to where you will be staying. Here’s the website for Everglades Safari Park if you decide to go there.

I recently had a long conversation with a man who used to take out airboat tours. He advised that you should find a small, private company, and be willing to turn off the motor, hang out and wait. He said that you see the coolest wildlife that way.

I hope you have a great time!

Orlando and Miami Adventures
Asked by Bikram Bhusan Sinha on April 09, 2008
Q: Hi , i am planning to go to Florida for 3 days with my family. Since i don't have much time , i will appreciate if you can give some information about the main places. I am mainly looking for Orlando and Miami. But i am not sure whether it is really possible to cover up in that time period ?I also like to know about the cheap hotels , car rental , flight booking etc.
A:
Hi Bikram,

I’m not sure what kind of things you and your family are interested in and your personalities -- adventure sports, theme parks, nature -- so here's a link to attractions in Orlando and also a link to attractions in Miami. This way you can pick for yourselves.
As 3 days isn’t much time I would choose to visit either Miami or Orlando, not both. Either place has stuff to keep you occupied for weeks, and you don’t want to waste a minute driving back and forth.

Cheap Hotels and Out-of-the-way-Adventures
Asked by Patricia on April 08, 2008
Q: Hello I'm going to Florida then next August and I want to hotels cheaps, please Could you help me?. What is the places most beautifuls and no places typical of tourist.Thaks
A: Hi Patricia,
I asked Lucy Beebe Tobias, Visit Florida's Authentic Expert for advice on places off the beaten path since she is so great at finding them, and she sent me all this information. Thank you, Lucy!
What she said was that "The web site www.hotels.com has great prices and a comparison chart from low to high. It changes all the time. You type in your destination, they give you the current choices.
Beautiful places not typical of tourists. Well, I'd have to say top of the list for me is Apalachicola in the Panhandle, a bit of a drive to get there, wonderful laid back lifestyle and lots of beaches too. The same is true of Delray Beach in South Florida, long stretches of Atlantic Ocean and a town that looks like it stayed in the 1930s -1950s.
What is beautiful? I think we can all agree a beautiful sunset is worth seeing. The Gulf of Mexico has some awesome sunsets. Sweet places to stay that are not tourist typical are Anna Maria Island, (any of the three towns but traffic is bad because there is one road), Dunedin and Tarpon Springs. Plenty of places to explore nearby.
Some people think St. Augustine is the most beautiful place with its fine historic buildings, the bay and nearby places to play. I'd go to St. Augustine any  day.
hope this helps,
walk in peace,
Lucy."
Good luck, Patricia -- and thanks again, Lucy!

Swimming with the Dolphins in the Keys
Asked by Natalie on April 03, 2008
Q: is ther any where in the florida keys where you can swim with the dolphins
A:
Hi Natalie,

You’re in luck! Dolphin Cove is a marine education and dolphin swim facility located in sunny Key Largo. The swim takes place in a natural lagoon that opens to the Florida Bay.  You can also enjoy a dolphin swim at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon. Dolphin World can help you find even more locations.

Or, opt to discover the world of wild dolphins in the local waters of Key West, Florida with Wild About Dolphins.

Have fun!

Airboat Ride near Flamingo
Asked by Rosemary on March 19, 2008
Q: Hello Lauren,I will be camping with my 14 year old son at Flamingo and he wants to go on an airboat ride. What is the name of the airboat company in your video? also, could you suggest a good canoe or kayak day trip for us in the Everglades? Thanks
A:
Hi Rosemary,

The name of the place in the video is Everglades Safari Park. It’s about 2 hours from Flamingo (it’s close to Miami) so you may want to find a closer company. I just had a long conversation with a man who used to take out airboat tours (He is a zookeeper in Miami now, and I was “zookeeper for a day” on Tuesday.) He advised that you should find a small, private company, and be willing to turn off the motor, hang out and wait. He said that you see the coolest wildlife that way.

Airboats are not permitted in Everglades National Park, but you may take an airboat ride outside park boundaries along the Tamiami Trail, at Everglades City, and between Homestead and the Ernest Coe Visitor Center off route 9336. I spoke with Cindy in ENP this morning, and she said they are not allowed to recommend airboat companies.

You can rent a canoe right in Flamingo. Cindy told me that everyone LOVES the 9 mile Pond loop—and here’s info about it plus a whole list a fantastic trips you can choose from – but the best place to go will depend on the time of year you visit and the water level (which is a little low right now). I hope you have a great time!

Florida White Water
Asked by Tamara, Toronto on March 12, 2008
Q: I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I am wondering if there is any white water rafting in Florida? I have looked online, but have not managed to find any companies that offer white water rafting in Florida...I don't even know if there is white water there? Thanks!!
A:
Hi Tamara,

Actually, it’s not a dumb question at all. I assumed there wasn’t any whitewater in Florida since the state is pretty flat, which doesn’t make for a lot of fast moving water. I was wrong.

I spoke with a woman at the Big Shoals Park (Phone: 386-397-2733) this morning and she said you can raft there, but only if you bring your own.

I also spoke with a man there this morning, and he said that they run trips around the Georgia/FL line. However, they have not run any trips in FL recently because of the low water levels. Their season runs from mid-May until early September. You might check back with them later because the woman I spoke with at Big Shoals said they’d had a boatload of rain lately and their rivers were way up.

I hope this helps!

Tunnel?
Asked by Deborah Ingle on March 09, 2008
Q: I have heard about a Tunnel that goes from ft meyers to key west would like to know about it Thank You
A:
Hi Deborah,

Thanks so much for writing. Unfortunately, there isn’t a tunnel that runs from Ft. Myers to Key West. It’s just shy of 300 miles. However, the drive is truly stunning since you often have water on both sides of the road. You could take a ferry if the drive doesn’t appeal to you. Key West Express provides a passenger ferry service between Ft Myers, Marco Island, Miami and Key West. Have a great trip!

Skydiving in Lake Wales
Asked by Mario LUPPA on March 06, 2008
Q: Hi Laureen, this is Mario from Tampa. Congratulation for your web site and for your work. Should you be interested in skydiving be aware that I could direct you to the most serious and efficient Skydiving Center in Florida, located near the Walaaby ranch, in Lake Wales. the owner and Manager is a dear friend of mine and I think she is also elected in the Administration of Lake Wales. The web site can be easily googled as "Florida Skydiving center Lake Wales".It was nice to have lunch and talking to you and your ... what ? ... husband, lover, soul mate, significant other ?Don't forget to make a decision for the world meet. before I go to Italy so I can take care of accommodation also for you. Keep in touch with Linda and remember " When it is time to make a decision you can make the right or the wrong decision, but even making the wrong decision is better that don't make any decision at all".Strength and Honor.Gladiator.
A:

Hi Mario,

It was fantastic to meet you and watch you skydive the other day. Your attitude is an inspiration. I’ll give you a call – but hey, if I go skydiving, will you be the one to take me? Pleeez? I need to go with someone who has had a zillion jumps! Bawk bawk (that’s the sound of the chicken).

For readers’ knowledge, my friend Linda flew down from New York this week to visit family and fly a hang glider at Wallaby Ranch. Besides being one of my closest friends, Linda is my teammate on the US Women’s Hang Gliding Team. She is ranked # 1 in the U.S. (Sadly, I am ranked #2.) While at Wallaby, she met up with Mario.

Mario will be helping us find our way around Italy in the World Hang Gliding Championships this year. He grew up at the base of Monte Cucco, where they are being held. Besides being a master skydiver, he is also a hang glider pilot and paraglider pilot, and those are just his hobbies. He took Linda skydiving, and she was moved to tears by the time they landed. It’s hard to make Linda cry, so I guess I have to go, too!

Mario, about your last comments: I have not made a final decision whether to represent the U.S. in Italy or not. It’s very expensive and I’m not sure I have enough mountain flying experience to make my nation and myself proud, but as you point out, I need to make up my mind quickly. I promise I will.

So, when are we going to jump out of a plane together???

Swimming with Dolphins and Manatees
Asked by lisa jackie on March 05, 2008
Q: We are coming to hollywood for vacation 6/29/08-7/7/08 my kids want to swim with the dolphins and manatees...is there any place to go in the south florida area for that?
A:

Hi Lisa Jackie,

You’re in luck! The Miami Seaquarium is only 24 minutes and 20 miles from Hollywood. You can swim with the dolphins there. They have several interactive experiences to choose from.

The Seaquarium has participated in the recovery and rehabilitation of more than 65 manatees and houses the most prolific manatee breeding colony anywhere in the U.S.  – but you can’t swim with them.

If you want to swim with the wild manatees you’d have to travel to the Crystal River area. Actually, Citrus County, Florida, is the only place in the world you can legally swim with wild manatees and interact with them, but it’s quite a drive from Hollywood – 4 hours, 41 minutes and 297 miles, to be exact! Here’s the contact info for Sunshine River Tours if you decide to make the trek. There are other good companies in the area, but I’ve been out 3 times with these guys and really like them.

Happy splashing!

Parasailing at Vero plus Dolphin Swim
Asked by Marissa on March 04, 2008
Q: My boyfriend and I are goin to Vero Beach for vacation and we were wondering what the closest place is to go parasailing and swimming with the dolphins
A:

Hi Marissa,

Here’s a parasailing operation that’s fairly close (I did a similar search earlier this week and cannot find a closer one – sorry). Here’s the contact info:
Beach Water Sports

555 NE Ocean Blvd
Stuart, FL 34996
(772) 225-2000

It’s right outside of Port St. Lucie, which Mapquest says is 43 minutes and 31 miles from Vero Beach.

The 2 closest places I found that you can swim with dolphins are in Orlando at Discovery Cove, which is about 1 hour, 44 minutes and 107 miles from Vero Beach, and Miami Seaquarium, which is about 2 hours, 26 minutes and 153 miles.

Have fun!

Swim with Sharks
Asked by Danielle on February 29, 2008
Q: I am traveling to Vero beach in a few weeks and would LOVE to swim w/ sharks! Is there a shark excursion or cage dive anywhere on the east coast of FL? I dont want to have to travel far and I cant find anything online. Thanks!
A:

Hi Danielle,

Jim Abernethy's Scuba Adventures in Palm Beach goes to a place called “Shark Canyon” about once a week. Mapquest tells me Palm beach is about 79 miles from Vero Beach, or 1 hour 23 minutes. Hopefully that’s not too far for you to travel. The woman I spoke with at JASA says that you most often see Nurse Sharks and Reef Sharks, but that they’ve recently seen a couple of Bull and Hammerhead Sharks, too. They don’t feed the sharks or chum; it’s just a location where sharks naturally gather. Have fun!

Swimming with the Dolphins in Orlando
Asked by Ana Pinilla on February 28, 2008
Q: Hi Lauren,I have some clients interested in swimming with the dolphins but Discovery cove is booked up for when they are there - March 30 - April 5 - is there other swim with the dolphins programs in Orlando?
A:
Hi Ana,

The short answer is no. You can swim with the dolphins in other locations in Florida, but as far as Orlando goes, Discovery Cove is it. However, I called a park representative this morning, and she told me you should go onto their booking section and keep checking, because people have 30 days to cancel for a full refund – and you may well still snag a reservation that way.

Alternatively, you can go on a 60-minute walking tour with Sea World in Orlando, which says “brings to light the over 20 years of experience our SeaWorld trainers and Animal Care specialists have with our Atlantic bottle-nose dolphins. Discover how building relationships with these magnificent mammals helps to inform, entertain and enrich all our lives.” For reservations call 1-800-327-2424.

Good luck!

Bull Riding
Asked by Patrick on February 26, 2008
Q: I have been looking everywhere for a place to ride a bull when I come down there to visit. Is there a place where I can ride a bull? Thank you for your time
A:

Hi Patrick,

Now this is a WILD adventure. I used to barrel race a zillion years ago (with a traveling rodeo in Germany). The difference with getting bucked off a horse or a bull is that after you fall off the horse, he won’t try to gore you!

I did find a place you can go. Sankey Rodeo Schools is running a bull riding school in Homestead March 28th-30th. Send pictures afterwards, okay?

Difference Between Kayaking at Cayo or Lover's Key
Asked by Sarah on February 26, 2008
Q: Can you give me your opinion on kayaking in May at either Lovers Key State Park or Cayo Costa State Park? I understand that I'll have to take a ferry to get to Cayo Costa, and it's larger but other than that would like to get an idea of why I might prefer one over the other. What makes each one special?? I'd like to see some wild life, stop for a picnic and a swim.
A:

Hi Sarah,

You’ll like either place. They both have rave reviews, but here are some more details so you can pick the one that would best suit your fancy. Where you decide to go may partly depend on your kayaking skill level.

Lovers Key State Park (as you probably know) is made up of four barrier islands, and is renowned for its pristine white beach and wildlife viewing opportunities. It has lots of manatees and dolphins. The woman I chatted with this morning was watching manatees play while we talked.

The park's boat ramp is a great place to put-in.  Heading downstream, the river runs for 3.5 miles towards Estero Bay. The current is lazy and at normal water levels can easily be traveled by novice paddlers. If the water level is substantially higher than normal, paddling up river will require some energy.

You can also put-in at Estero Bay (the same outfit that rents kayaks in the park has a place there). If you paddle there, you need to have more experience because of the boat traffic and rougher water.

Other cool things about Lover’s Key: The Lee Island Coast has one of the world’s largest populations of loggerhead sea turtles – they weigh up to 300 pounds! May -October, they come ashore and dig nests along some of the beaches. 60 days later the hatchlings break out of their eggs and crawl their way to the sea. Visitors can participate in turtle monitoring activities.

Allow an extra hour to explore the Koreshan Unity Settlement (now known as the Koreshan State Historic Site). Dr. Cyrus Teed – who thought the world was hollow and that humans lived on the inside of the sphere-- founded this strange communal society in the late 1800's. He also thought he was immortal, but nevertheless died in 1908 (surprise, surprise!). Subsequently, the community slowly dissolved.

The large island a tic southwest of the bay entrance is Mound Key. It was literally built to heights of 30 feet from oyster shells over a period of nearly 2,000 years by the Calusa Indians.

Note: Bring insect repellent. It will come in especially handy if you decide to go hiking on Mound Key or any of the other islands.

As you mentioned, Cayo Costa is accessible only by boat, and is one of the largest barrier islands in Florida. It contains unique vegetation that has gone unspoiled for the past 500 years, and is ideal for camping, swimming, shelling and fishing.

What’s cool about Cayo: One of the big deals about it is because it’s remote, it appears much as it would have to the early explorers, especially now that the Australian pines are mostly gone. The island is thickly forested with cabbage palms and small oaks. The wildlife includes wild hogs descended from those brought by the Spanish explorers.

The gentleman I spoke with on Cayo said if he had the choice, he’d come there, because it is so pristine and wild. I recommend making the 16 mile round trip from Pine Island to Cayo Costa by kayak. Check out the trip on YouTube. The pictures explain lots better than I can.

The trip isn’t difficult during good weather, but could become a challenge if a fast moving storm appeared. Because of the number of miles and exposed open water the kayak club gives this trip its advanced rating. Just keep your eyes open and don’t go out if it’s stormy. In May you won’t have to be so concerned about the pattern of afternoon thunderstorms that we get in the summer months.

The man I spoke with said if you’re a novice (and worried about the Pine Island trip) you can paddle around the islands without difficulty.

Kayak rentals are available through Tropic Star of Pine Island.  Call (239) 283-0015 for more information.

I hope this helps!

Top Sporting Festivals/Adventures
Asked by Dominic on February 19, 2008
Q: Dear Lauren,I am living in Asia and planning a trip to Florida during the year. What would you rate as the top 3 or 4 sporting and adventure activities/festivals in 2008? Thanks
A:

Hi Dominic,

Thanks so much for writing! You question is hard to answer because it is so broad. I’ve focused on things that I like the best and particularly suit Florida. If they don’t sound good to you, write back and I’ll try again.

I’d vote for you to go tandem hang gliding at Wallaby Ranch (the first full time aerotow park in the world). It’s fun and safe. It’s close to Orlando so you’d have lots of other activities available, too. The really cool thing to do would be to time your visit so you’d be there between 3/25/2008-3/30/2008. That’s when Wills Wing (a big name hang glider manufacturer) is hosting their Demo Days and party. You could fly yourself, and then check out the fabulous gliders before joining in the party in the evening. I’m going there, and I have friends flying in from all over that are going, too. (If you catch me  dancing on top of a table, you have to promise not to tell.) Check out  Wallaby and  Wills Wing

I’d also recommend you drive a NASCAR style racecar at the Daytona International Speedway with the Richard Petty Driving Experience. I had a crazy-good time there and Daytona is like no other place in the world. The cool thing to do with THIS trip would be to time it close to when the Speedway is having a race or a big event (which is often). Daytona’s got the beach and lots of other activities, too.

I’m a big animal lover, and one of my favorite things is swimming with the wild manatees in the Crystal River. You can’t have this adventure – where you get to interact with wild manatees like this -- anywhere else in the whole wide world except Citrus County. This area is quiet and more suited to camping and hiking than parties. Check out my blog for details. I've gone 3 times with Sunshine River Tours

Another way that Florida is special is with its scuba diving on the living barrier reef that runs the length of the Keys – it’s spectacular. I did a “discover scuba” program at Holiday Isle Dive Shop.  You learn in the pool and classroom in the morning and then go on 2 dives in the afternoon. I swam with sharks, saw rays and incredible coral formations; it truly was spectacular. You can snorkel instead if you don’t like the idea of diving. You could attend one of the scuba trade shows and events at the same time you did a dive.

I hope this helps.

Kiteboarding in the Keys
Asked by Den on February 13, 2008
Q: Lauren,My 16 year old son and his buddy want to kite board in the Keys NEXT week! They are terrific California snowboarders, but no kite boarding experience. The only info I have found pegs 3 to 4 hour lessons for about $ 400 per person.Would you know of any companies that are a little more reasonable on the pricing?
A:

Hi Den,

Thanks for writing. I found a couple of places for you with better prices, but I should explain up front that I didn’t go with the cheapest. The reason they are not as cheap as some is that they boat way out in the ocean to teach you, away from land. This is a BIG safety factor. Kite boarding can be dangerous. The main danger factor is being dragged into something unfriendly (like land).

Here’s what I have: The Kite House in Key West offers a “Goin’ tribal” special, which will give 2 days of lessons for your son and a friend for $550 (that’s together, not apiece). All online reservations must be booked 48 hours in advance. To book earlier times, contact them at 305.294.8679 or by Email (bookings@thekitehouse.com). Here’s their website: http://www.thekitehouse.com/

Seven Kiteboarding, based on Islamorada, will give a 3 hour lesson for 2 people for $500. They also have a 3 lesson package for 2 people for $1149. If you divide the 3 lesson package up it comes to $192. apiece for each lesson. They have a free land lesson on Friday evenings, as well. This is their number: 877-937-2359 (I also found another number for them that didn’t work – use this one). This is their email:  school@sevensports.com. This is their website: http://www.sevenkiteboarding.com.   I spoke with owner Brad Lange this morning and thought he was very professional. They have an impressive safety record, too – no serious injuries since their opening in 1999!

Another tip: Your son and his friend might try to get their hands on a “trainer kite” and work with it before they go to help speed up the learning process. The snow boarding experience should be beneficial to them, as well.

Hi Mick,

Thanks for writing! Yes, you can mountain bike in Florida, in many different areas. I am, of course, most familiar with the trails close to my home, but I don’t want to limit you to the cool places that I personally know when there are so many more. I’ve included these links to give you options wherever you decide to visit.

This is the link to existing VISIT FLORIDA articles that include mountain biking: http://www.visitflorida.com/search_results/query.mountain+biking

Correction about Parasailing Age

A: Hi Denise,
Thanks for the heads up for the age limit at Sebago for parasailing (12 years old). Daytona Parasailing said the youngest child they've  taken is 18 months. I advise readers to check with whatever service they are using to find out exactly what rules and restrictions they have, so they won't be dissapointed when they get there.

The Skinny on Scuba
Asked by Ron on January 23, 2008
Q: Me and my wife love scuba diving, where are the best places in florida to go?
A: Hi Ron, (Lauren’s note: Ron sent me another note saying that they’d like to surf, also.) For fantastic scuba diving, head to the Keys. The barrier reef runs its entire length so just pick the town that suits the atmosphere you’re looking for. For instance, Key West is an anything-goes-party-town, while Islamorada is much quieter and geared towards fishermen and divers. Key Largo has great diving but tends to be more crowded. However, unless conditions are extremely rare, you can’t surf in the Keys. For great surfing, go to the central east coast. I called John, the owner of Florida Surf Lessons, and he said that the further north you go (towards Cocoa Beach) the more consistent the waves. He also said that the surfing tends to be better from mid-fall to mid-spring. I listed their website below. However, the TOUGH PART about this question is where you can go and enjoy good surfing and good scuba in the same place at the same time. I tried to figure out the furthest north you could go for good diving, so you would have a better chance of catching some good waves, too. I called my friend Matthew for advice since he is an avid diver. He was in the Virgin Islands on a dive when I reached him this morning! He and his wife like to dive with the Scuba Club at West Palm Beach. Matthew added that you should go when the water is warm... but as I said before, the surfing won’t be as consistent then. He said in that case, just bring good wetsuits! I hope this is of some help. Ideas for Family Outdoor Fun
Asked by Tracy on January 09, 2008
Q: Lauren, I'm looking for some ideas for a family vacation (ages from 14 years old and up; possibly eight people). We haven't made plans yet so the area is open. We're somewhat adventurous but not crazy. We definitely want to enjoy the outdoors.
A: Hi Tracy, Since you haven’t decided on the area you want to visit I’m just going to throw some ideas your way that are active but not extreme. Consider taking an airboat ride in the Everglades, or ballooning over Disney and the green swamp. You could snorkel the coral barrier reef that runs the length of the Keys,or take a horseback ride. One of the coolest things I’ve ever gotten to do is swim with the manatees in the Crystal or Homosassa River. (You are actually snorkeling, not just swimming.) Cap’n Mike’s Sunshine River Tours includes a wetsuit, all your equipment and an underwater camera with the tour (I think it’s currently priced at $50. per person). You boat out onto the river, and the wild manatees (up to 13 feet long and 3500 pounds!) swim up to you so you can rub their tummies and stroke them. It’s unique, to say the least. I took my mother for her 74th birthday. Parasailing, jetskiing, and deep sea fishing are always fun. You could take a surfing lesson at Cocoa Beach or windsurf at Calema windsurfing on the Banana River. There’s a vertical wind tunnel in Orlando called “Skyventure” where you can experience sky diving in a tame way. The Orlando Watersports complex offers wakeboarding and waterskiing. They have a cable tow system that pulls you around. They have 3 lakes. One has all kinds of jumps for the hotshots so you can watch them if you get tired of wakeboarding. I seriously have heard kids tell their parents that it’s the best place in the whole world. Yeesh, I almost forgot kayaking and canoeing (see the link below). You can float and paddle through remote territory. In many places the water is absolutely crystal clear so you can see fish, freshwater rays and maybe gators. Hopefully this will give you some new ideas! http://www.evsafaripark.com/exclusive.htm http://www.orlandowatersports.com/ http://www.skyventure.com/ http://www.calema.com/ http://www.floridasurflessons.com/ http://www.orangeblossomballoons.com/ http://www.rainbowrivercanoeandkayak.com/ http://www.sunshinerivertours.com/ http://www.diveholidayisle.com/ http://www.horseworldstables.com/ Lauren
Pregnant Plans
Asked by Gail M on January 08, 2008
Q: I am pregnant and planning on taking a trip with my husband to Florida during my 2nd trimester. I enjoy windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, wakeboarding, kayaking, nature stuff. Of course, since I am pregnant, a number of those activities (wakeboarding, scuba) are out. We would like a relaxing vacation with enough fun stuff to do. I love the water. Neither of us are big drinkers. Any suggestions? We were thinking about the Fort Lauderdale area and seeing the Everglades. Any other suggestions?
A: Hi Gail, First, congratulations! I have a few ideas for activities you might be able to do without endangering the baby. I chose things that weren’t too physical, but OF COURSE clear them with your doctor before you try them. You could go out on a fishing boat. If that’s not your thing, you could try jet skiing. I went a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how much fun it was. You could also try parasailing. If you haven’t done it before it’s a cool way to see an area from a different perspective. It’s not dangerous and there is no skill involved. Here’s a place that offers all three things. Watersports Unlimited, www.kitesurfusa.com, 301 Seabreeze Blvd, Fort Lauderdale - (954) 467-1316. Since you scuba dive, I’m sure you’ve already thought of snorkeling. If that’s too strenuous, you could go out in a glass bottom boat – though that might be too tame for you. There are all kinds of boat tours of the area, too. http://www.fortlauderdaletours.net/ If Miami isn’t too far for you, go to Everglades Safari Park. They have an “island hopping” airboat tour where you not only see the Everglades but also stop at remote, uninhabited islands, explore ancient Indian campsites and look for artifacts. I haven’t done that yet but I go next week! I think it sounds very fun. Oh, they have other things to do there, too, like alligator shows, so you can make a full day of it if you want. Good luck, and have a healthy, happy baby! http://www.evsafaripark.com/

Q: why is it soooo expensive
A: Hi Cheryl! Sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking about. How come WHAT is so expensive? (Perhaps I can help you find a cheaper alternative.) Lauren
Snorkeling in the Keys
Asked by Christina on December 27, 2007
Q: I am planning a trip to Miami in March and maybe a day or two in the Keys. Any good snorkeling?
A: Hi Christina, If you have time to escape anywhere in the Keys for a few days, do. You’ll find brilliant snorkeling there, because a 120 mile long reef runs the length of the Keys Island chain. It’s the only North American living coral reef, and the 3rd largest one in the world. Places I’ve personally been to recently and liked include: Holiday Isle’s Dive Shop in Islamorada. http://www.diveholidayisle.com/ They have some fantastic snorkeling sites --clear water, not crowded, abundant life. I saw nurse sharks, rays, Trumpetfish, Angelfish, lobsters, Parrotfish, and more. I was scuba diving but some of their sites (like Rock Flats) are so shallow the snorkelers had nearly the same view I did. It really was the trip of a lifetime. I also went snorkeling with Sebago Watersports on their “Power Adventure.” http://www.keywestsebago.com/ That’s all the way in Key West, so it might be too far for you. If you have time it is truly one of the coolest towns in the world. Anyhow, on the adventure you go out a giant catamaran for 6 hours. You get to snorkel on the reef but you also can Parasail, jump on the water trampoline, play with the wave runners, and kayak, plus, they provide lavish food and wine and beer. It costs under $150. Per person, which I thought was a pretty good deal. Here’s a web site that will give you some options for snorkeling in Miami Beach. http://www.tarpoondivecenter.com/Snorkel-Trips.htm Some of the places looked interesting to me, like the wreck and the giant bar (an underwater, artificial reef that was sunk as a promotion during the "Sinko de Mayo festival"). Insider’s tips: If you’re prone to motion sickness, take medicine beforehand. No matter how great the trip is, if you’re barfing, it ain’t fun. Bonine, an over-the-counter-medicine, might help (get your doctor’s advice before you take any medication). Use alcohol based ear drops after being in the ocean (again, only if your doctor agrees). Tip the staff and crew. 15 to 20% is appropriate. Let me know how it goes! Lauren
