Every Man's Fantasy
December 18, 2008
It’s every man’s fantasy.

I’m talking about taking to the track in an IndyCar or a NASCAR race car. Ladies, give this holiday gift to the guy in your life, and you will earn enough brownie points to open a fudge factory. Car-crazy gals will flip over it, too.

Yesterday, I had the incredible experience of riding in both types of vehicles at the Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando. (I know my job is tough, but someone’s got to do it.)

What was it like?

For the IndyCar, I donned a fireproof racing suit, gloves, shoes, skull cap and helmet. The inside of the car was tiny, a close fit. My rear was about an inch from the pavement. I was clipped in with a five-point-harness. I had to yell to be heard over the roar of the engine – and car wasn't even moving. On the track, I don’t think Davey could have heard me if I’d used a bullhorn.

Yes, I mean THAT Davey. Two-time Indy Series Championship runner-up Davey Hamilton was actually my driver! There is nothing like riding in the coolest car in the world with one of the best drivers in the world. It felt like we blasted around at 400 mph. The design of the IndyCar is made to push it down on the track. It's nimble,cat-like, unbelievably powerful and can handle the corners faster than stock cars. We pulled four g-forces while driving it. The Disney Track is smaller than Daytona, and its banks are less severe. Because of that, it’s wilder to drive on it. You cannot go as fast, but it feels faster.

For my ride along in the NASCAR-style car, I was surprised to find Brian -- my old race driver buddy from The Daytona International Speedway (where I drove in the Richard Petty Driving Experience) -- was one of the drivers. I rode with Gary, another hot, hot, hot driver. He and Brian screamed along about 6 feet from each other. The stock car feels totally different than the IndyCar. The force I felt pulling me sideways and down – the g-forces – were much less, and I was sitting how I would in a normal car instead of stuck down in a tiny hole.

The experience gave me respect for drivers in the actual races. I have no idea of how they race for hours, with the faster speeds and crowded tracks. With only three cars on the track, we only drove for a few minutes at a safe speed. It felt insane, but in a good way.

You should definitely try it. Which one? That’s easy…both!

Here’s more information about the Indy Racing Experience and the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Make sure you check out my video of the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Daytona as well as my blog post about my experience there.
