| My friend Kim was was not too concerned when she discovered a lump in her breast, because, in her words, everyone knows 21 year olds don’t get breast cancer.
Unfortunately – though Kim did not smoke or drink and didn’t carry an extra ounce of fat, besides the fact that she was barely old enough to vote -- she was wrong. She did have breast cancer.
The good news? Though Kim lost all of her hair and some of her flesh, suffering a truly hellish year, she survived and has since returned to her usual bouncy, cheerful self.
The bad news is that Kim’s dreaded diagnosis is hardly rare. According to National Cancer Institute estimates new cases of breast cancer reached a whopping 184,450 in the United States in 2008. The death toll was an appalling 40,930.
Thanks to The Cycling Hub and Trek you can make a difference! (The Cycling Hub is a cool bike shop in Clermont where I got my bike; Trek is a bike manufacturer devoted to changing people’s lives through cycling.) They’re hosting a ten and 25 mile no-drop ride for breast cancer Saturday, October 11.
And guess what? Trek dealers nationwide will be hosting their own rides. The goal is to have every man and women in the U.S. riding bikes on the same day, at the same time, in recognition of breast cancer.
I’ll be puffing along with the pack in Clermont. You should come, too!
The fee is $25 with 100% of the fee going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. All participants will receive a free gift. Be sure to stick around after the ride for refreshments, music, raffle and store specials.
Thanks for supporting a great cause!
