I’m sipping coffee and listening to the ocean while I write, sitting on the private balcony of my hotel room. Besides listening to the ocean, I can see it, Delray Beach on a perfectly fine morning, stretching to the north and south. The sun sparkles on the waves; the sea breeze feels cool and smells rich. Joggers, some with babies, are already trotting out to the beach or up the palm-lined sidewalks.
My hotel is the Marriott Delray Beach, a gracious affair complete with a spa, restaurant, lounge, pools and gym. Besides the ocean view, my room boasts a comfy bed complete with no less than five pillows. In fact, my husband Paul is still asleep, which is why I’m outside, so I don’t bother him.
I can’t say enough about this seaside village. My first reaction was we should move here. Nestled against the Atlantic, just a splash south of Palm Beach, Delray Beach has a small town feel. It’s upscale, with quirky shops, restaurants and art galleries lining Atlantic Avenue. Almost all the restaurants feature outdoor seating, and the nightlife is vibrant. (Note about noshing: City Oyster is the place to go if you’re shellfish about your seafood.)
