I have a few questions.
First, why is Charley gnarly? Does he have a surly temperament or does he not shampoo his hair often, or do I just not want to know? And I’m not even sure what a GROM is, much less why anyone would want to groom one…
Turns out all the news about Gnarly Charley's GROM Surf Series is good!
The Urban Dictionary explains that a GROM is just a shortened form of grommet, meaning a young surfer.
Gnarly Charley is just a nickname for the great guy running the series. And the series is fantastic, teaching the little princes and princesses of the peaks not only how to succeed in surfing contests, but how to succeed in life and be good sports. It aims to help kids gain self esteem, increase confidence, gain respect, improve athletic ability and make new friends.
The contests will be held monthly from March through October, 2011. All will be held in the New Smyrna Beach area except for an extra one in the month of July at Sebastian Inlet. Check Gnarly Charley’s website for details.
Sounds like groovy fun for the little grommets – or for you to watch!
Never been to New Smyrna Beach? That’s as sad as a surfer without a wave, because it’s as sweet as a superb swell. Check out this video of its sweet shores and you’ll see what I mean.

We love Gnarley Charley! Up in Jacksonville Beach he was always at the surf shops, running surf camps, and always had a smile and cool attitude. He taught my son to surf at age 5. Glad you found him!
