These people and pooches are good. Last year’s competitors included two world champions, plus a dozen past and present world finalists. Put on by Disc Connected K9s, with assistance provided by the Greater Jacksonville Disc & Dog Club, this tournament is part of the prestigious UFO World Cup championship series, and should be one of the largest, most competitive events of the year. Besides, they’re celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the invention of the Frisbee!

About the competition:

• The divisions include Novice, Intermediate and Open. Novice and Intermediate competitors will only compete in Throw & Catch. Open competitors will compete in Freestyle; the top 10 qualifiers after the first round will move on to Throw & Catch and one final round of Freestyle.
• Throw and Catch. The dogs and the action are fast in this race against the clock, where players try to complete throws and catches on a 40-meter field. More points are awarded for longer completions. Watch for catapulting canines; extra points are also awarded for mid-air catches. Players have 60 seconds to make as many throws and catches with their dogs as possible.
• The Freestyle section is frantic and fun. Competitors perform a choreographed routine set to music, riveting the crowd with an assortment of trick throws and catches. This combination of doggie-dance, mania and tunes is considered to be the highest level of competition. Freestyle performances often include vaults, with dogs launching themselves off their trainers’ backs, chests and legs.
• Trophies and prizes will be awarded in all categories.
• It’s cheap. Spectators over 12 years of age are being asked to make a $2 donation at the gate.
• It’s for a good cause. The monies this championship raises will benefit dog rescue organizations in Northeast Florida. Donated dog food and dog care items will also gladly be accepted and presented to the rescue groups.  
• If you can tear yourself away from the action, you can check out the vendors selling doggie items, the dog rescue groups and the pet booths. Food and beverages will be available.
