Stargazing on the Beach at Pensacola Beach
May 08, 2010

If you’re looking for a show, it’s hard to beat the one Ma Nature puts on every night with her stars – thousands of bits of light that seem to wobble and pulse, mysterious, fascinating bits of lights. Now imagine combining the wonder of stargazing with the sound of the sea slapping the shore and a cool breeze washing over your shoulders, and you’ve got a recipe for an evening that you’ll never forget.

If that sounds like a treat to you, you’re in luck, because the Escambia Amateur Astronomers' Association is offering a Summer Sidewalk Star Gaze May 21 and May 22, 2010, at 8 p.m. at the Gulfside Pavilion on beautiful Pensacola Beach.

Nearly 20 telescopes -- ranging in strength and size from duplicates of Galileo's original telescope to today’s incredible large-scope devices – will be set up by volunteers. You’ll be able view wonders like Jupiter, the Milky Way and other galaxies.

As if that wasn’t cool enough, video cameras will be hitched up with some of the telescopes to display images on monitors up to 100 times more clearly than if you were viewing them through the telescope with your eye alone. And get this! Free star charts and sky calendars will be available.

The gravy on the potatoes is that the event is free. Woo-hoo!

Can’t make it in May? Don’t get your beach towel in a twist! Additional stargazing nights will be offered at 8 p.m. on June 18 - 19, July 16 - 17, Aug. 13 - 14, Sept. 17-18 and Oct. 15-16, 2010.
