I love the seashore, but what I know about shelling could be stuffed inside of a Ring Top Cowrie (a tiny shell that I just looked up on the Internet which is why I know its fancy-shmancy name).
Conversely, the folks at the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum -- located on the supreme shelling island of Sanibel -- know a very great deal about shells and shelling. Further, they are willing to share their knowledge.
Every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. you can learn the best places to hunt for shells, the time of day that's best for shell collection, what to bring with you on your shelling walks and lots of other terrific tips in their "How, When and Where to Find Shells" workshop. The workshop is free with paid admission to the museum.
And here’s something even cooler: The museum sometimes conducts beach walks where they actually help you hunt for shells!
Check out the great photo that David Meardon shot on Sanibel.
