Is your skin turning gray from lack of sun? Has it been months since your toes have seen a pair of sandals? Is your mood going south?
How about you going south instead? Winter means it’s time to ditch your jacket in the nearest snowdrift and hurry to the Sunshine State for the holidays. There’s a ship-load of seashore celebrations where you can celebrate the season – and the weather – including these Northwest Florida offerings:
- The Season Lights Up at 6 p.m. on Nov. 27, 2009, when Santa Rosa Island turns on its twinkly holiday lights. Tree lighting and caroling at the Boardwalk around the mammoth live tree are part of this free holiday fun.
- At 7 p.m., Dec. 11, 2009, delight to the sparkling spectacle of the Lighted Boat Parade meandering from Pensacola Beach Marina to the Boardwalk. Even Santa Claus will be at the free festival – arriving via the parade!
- Have you ever turned sand dollars and starfish into tree ornaments before? Now you can. The Days Inn at Pensacola Beach will show you how – for free – with Ornament Making from 1 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2009.
- Via de Luna’s Surfing Santa Beach Parade starts at 2 p.m. on Dec. 13, 2009. The Island’s main street will be alive with fabulous floats sharing candy and trinkets with all who care to catch the spirit. Santa oversees the action perched on a red fire engine. Once he’s delivered to the Gulfside Pavilion, children may whisper their wishes to him. Of course it’s free!
- Rudolph’s Red Nose Ramble is an adult-only celebration that starts at Pensacola’s Sandshaker at 2 p.m. on Dec. 20, 2009. The party will stop at Sabine Sandbar for Island Eggnog, Hooters for more holiday cheer and then to Bamboo Willie’s for the Santa Look Alike and Elf contests. Finally, follow the Red Nose back to the Shaker for the Wrap Up Party at 4:30 p.m.
- The Holiday on the Harbor Boat Parade, in Destin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 13, 2009, boasts lighted, decorated boats that you can admire from anywhere on Destin Harbor.
- Work off your Thanksgiving feast at the Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis on Dec. 5, 2009, at 9 a.m. at Brooks Landing in Fort Walton Beach. The first 500 registered participants will be awarded jingle bell shoelaces and long-sleeve T-shirts. The event features a 5K and 10K Run/Walk, a 5K Race/Walk, a One-Mile Fun Run and Dog Walk and even a Santa Chase.
- Pensacola Beach will be exploding with fun and fireworks on New Year's Eve.
- Feeling tough? Try Pensacola’s Polar Bear Plunge on Jan. 1, 2010.
There are literally too many events to list, so check out the Pensacola Beach calendar and the Destin/Fort Walton Beach calendar for more complete lists (plus details about the events listed above).
