Panama City Beach Ironman Florida
October 21, 2009
It’s amazing that anyone can complete an Ironman Triathlon.

First, you swim 2.4 miles. That’s huge. But forget heading home for a nap on the couch to recuperate. In an Ironman, you’re just warming up.

Your next task is to climb on your bike and pedal it 112 miles. That’s the sort of ride that might get your legs trembling. No, you’re still not done. Not even close.

Next on the menu is a run, a whopping 26.2 mile one. It’s almost unfathomable.

While the distances are truly mind-boggling what’s even more mind boggling is witnessing the people that accomplish them. The first Ironman I ever saw (in Clermont) I witnessed a 70-year-old woman tackling the course, as well as a man with only one arm. Seeing their courage and determination sure made my excuse that I am too old to ever do such a thing seem awfully puny.

If you want to be inspired, or you’re just curious about these mega-triathlons, it just so happens that the Ironman Florida will be rolling into Panama City Beach Nov. 7-9, 2009. You can’t beat the location. The swim portion begins on the beach behind the Boardwalk Beach Resort, in the Gulf of Mexico, and the run takes place on streets with names like Surf, Beach and Lagoon Drive.

You say you’ve entered?

Wow.  You have all of my admiration, and I wish you cool weather and an abundance of courage.

This 70-year-old woman just completed the swim section of an Ironman -- how awesome is THAT?
