| The equation works like this: Gas gets expensive. Plane tickets get expensive. Airlines add service fees. American Airlines recently announced it will begin charging $15 for travelers’ first checked bag, and it looks like other airlines may soon follow suit.
Pretty soon we’ll be dropping bills into the pilot’s tip jar before boarding.
But there’s good news, and hopefully the start of a reverse trend (or at least some nice incentives). To help defray rising travel costs, the Loews hotel chain is offering guests a “Baggage Buy Back” program that reimburses this airline luggage fee.
Loews guests simply bring their airline baggage fee receipt to the front desk for the rebate, issued in the form of a credit to their bill at check-out. The chain is offering credit for up to two bags, for a maximum of $30 per occupied room per stay.
The rebate is available at all 18 Loews properties in the U.S. and Canada, running June 15 through Labor Day, September 1, 2008. Loews owns or operates five hotels in Florida, including sites in Miami Beach, Orlando and St. Pete Beach.
Jonathan Tisch, Chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels, said the goal is to help guests “rein in some of the hidden costs of travel that are becoming increasingly common.”
Sounds good to me.
