Castles That Rock - Part Three
March 14, 2008
No discussion of Florida castles would be complete without mentioning those crafted of sand. Building sandcastles pays homage to the essence of Florida: sand, water and sun.

Also, it's just good fun.

If you really want to experience Florida’s sandcastles, you’ve got to see the American Sandsculpting Championship Festival, held annually in Fort Myers Beach.

Thousands of spectators flock to this gorgeous expanse of sugar-fine beach each November to see pros and amateurs build whimsical castles. A free “Sandsculpting 101” seminar is popular for novices seeking advice and techniques.

For a firsthand look at the 2007 festivities, check out this video featuring VISIT FLORIDA Beaches Expert David McRee.

This year’s Sandsculpting Championship will take place November 5 through 9, 2008. Discounts are available at several participating hotels, with rooms just steps from the action. Free parking and shuttle transportation is also provided.

Families, artists, beach enthusiasts, nature lovers ... this is a trip you need to take.
