Castles That Rock - Part One
February 25, 2008
Travelers are often surprised to discover Florida has a fair share of castles – and not just those made of sand or housing cartoon princesses.

Our tropical state has sheltered many creative and quirky residents who have crafted homes beyond compare. These Sunshine State castles stand the test of time, drawing visitors from around the world who marvel at these monuments (and their makers).

Just 30 miles south of the Miami International Airport in Homestead stands the notorious Coral Castle (28655 South Dixie Highway; 305/248-6345), opened in 1923.

It took creator Ed Leedskalnin some 28 years to move and sculpt more than 1,100 tons of coral rock to build this imposing structure, thought to be a monument to his lost love Agnes Scuffs.

How Leedskalnin – weighing just 100 pounds and standing scarcely over 5 feet tall – managed to handle these materials on his own remains a mystery.

He claimed he knew the secrets used to build the ancient pyramids. I recommend you go and formulate your own theory. I went there more than six years ago, and am still baffled.

Mysteries aside, the Coral Castle is a lovely and peaceful place to visit, and it makes an excellent (and inexpensive) afternoon trip from Miami.

The castle is open for tours seven days a week. Adult admission costs $9.75, and children under 12 cost $5. Inquire about group rates if you’re coming with several friends.

More details are available on the Visit Florida information page.

Check back soon, as I'll continue to explore Florida's unusual fortresses in my blog.

Until then ... happy travels!
