Chill Out at Airport Spas
January 02, 2008
You’ve navigated long lines at security and managed to get your shoes back on while balancing several pieces of baggage. Now carting this cumbersome load toward the terminal, you’re feeling tense and tired, not at all prepared for a cramped four-hour flight in coach.

Fortunately, relief is just a chair massage away – at the airport spa

Created as a natural response to super-stressed traveling environments, these spas accommodate walk-in clients for services such as facials, massages, oxygen therapy, manicures and pedicures. Each menu offers a range of pricing for every budget.

The Jetsetter Spa, opened in Miami International Airport (MIA) in December 2007, even features the nation’s first rentable sleep pods. Just snuggle in, turn on some soothing music and nap through your layover.

Quite a concept compared to the old method: stretching out across three terminal chairs and trying to catch a few winks while boarding calls blare overhead.

MIA’s Rooftop Health Club is currently closed for renovation. When it reopens (date pending), travelers can work out on Nautilus equipment, test skills on the racquetball court, or even take a dip in the swimming pool. Afterward, relax in the sauna and refresh with salon services.

Call the Club at (305) 871-4100 for renovation updates.

XpresSpa (www.xpresspa.com) has 30 spas at 16 airports such as Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York and Orlando. This premium-class venue features specialized services such as the Sinus Relief Head Massage and Reflexology.

O-Town is also home to d_parture spa, which in addition to quality spa services (Seaweed Facial, anyone?) features an incredible array of travel-sized products for purchase. After paring down toiletries for security purposes, you can conveniently restock here. Learn more at www.departurespa.com.

With so many options available, you’ll be planning ahead to spend an extra hour at the airport. Steeped in soothing essential oils and stretched out for a massage? That’s definitely traveling smart.
