Sweet Sanibel Island
November 30, 2007

The tranquil paradise of Sanibel Island makes an excellent weekend getaway, but begs you to stay longer. It’s easy to get used to empty two-lane roads, a rainbow of seashells on every beach, and the slow pace of island life.

Any trip can get exorbitant – but this one doesn’t have to. Good local seafood, clean hotels and reliable bike rentals can still be found on the cheap, if you travel smart.

For starters, interior hotels like the Anchor Inn (1245 Periwinkle Way; 239-395-9688) are convenient to island attractions, while allowing you to avoid beachfront rates. The Inn's single rooms and family cottages feature kitchenettes or full kitchens – a must for trimming your breakfast and lunch budgets.

Kicking off your Sanibel vacation with a trip to the Visitor’s Center is another great idea. You can't miss this brightly painted building at 1159 Causeway Road -- it's the first you'll see as you cross the bridge onto the island.

Ask for Julianne, a very helpful local guide who knows all there is to know about Sanibel, and its sister island Captiva. No matter what you fancy, Julianne can point you in the right direction. Get ready to start shelling, kayaking, biking, dining, fishing ... or simply relaxing by the shore.

Secluded Bowman’s Beach runs for miles along the tip of upper Sanibel, without a hotel, motel or condominium in sight – great for taking long walks, shelling and meditating on driftwood shapes. Public parking is only $2 per hour.
