This week’s affordable entertainment is all about taking a fresh look at some of Florida’s oldest treasures. Pack a picnic lunch. Don’t forget your walking shoes; hop in the car and head on over to St. Augustine to do some antiquing on St. George Street.
The winding roads of historic downtown St. Augustine are home to dozens of antiques stores and great art galleries that are tucked in between old brick roads and alleyways. St. George and Aviles streets along with San Marco Avenue provide a nice shopping stop while exploring Florida’s oldest continuously occupied city. St. George is one of my favorites. It’s one of the few places you can have great fun window shopping for once-in-a-lifetime finds and still manage to squeeze in a few purchases without breaking the bank.
Perhaps the best feature of St. George Street is that it is pedestrian only! That’s right! For about 11 blocks, you have the freedom to browse the promenade unencumbered by cars or other traffic. The backdrop of the beautiful buildings that are the signature of Florida’s oldest continuously occupied city doesn’t hurt either.
As you look for great one-day getaways as summer winds down, keep St. George Street in St. Augustine at the top of your list. |
