Boca Raton Brings Great Foreign Films to Florida
August 05, 2009
This summer in Florida seems to be particularly hot. And, while sometimes the sizzling sun seems custom-ordered for your beach day, once the sand settles, a cool alternative comes in handy.

The Boca Raton Museum of Art, 501 Plaza Real, in Mizner Park, has the perfect alternative for those times. All through August, the museum is featuring excellent opportunities to expand your cultural horizons in the chill of the a/c. The annual Films for a Summer Afternoon series promises to be ultra-“cool” on multiple levels. All of the movies are foreign-language films that have won the Academy Award in that category. It’s free with your museum admission.

Ninety tickets are distributed one hour prior to showing on a first-come, first-served basis. If you find yourself in Boca Raton during any of these dates, plan on taking in the 2 p.m. showing. This is Florida fun too good to be missed.

Check out the museum’s descriptions for each film:
August 5; 8: "Day for Night” (La Nuit Americaine). Francois Truffaut, 120 min, France, 1973 PG. The director’s tribute to the communal insanity of making a movie. The film takes a humorous look at the chaos behind the scenes – from technical problems to human tribulations.
August 12; 15: "Black and White in Color” (Noirs et blancs en couleur), Jean-Jacques Annaud, 105 min, Ivory Coast, 1976 NR. Filmed on the Ivory Coast and set amidst the outbreak of World War I, a French trading post in West Central Africa finds itself at odds with a formerly peaceful German post.
Aug. 19; 22: "Journey of Hope" (Voyage vers l’espoir), Xavier Koller, 105 min, Switzerland, 1984, PG This fact-based drama chronicles the hardships and dire consequences suffered by a family of Turkish farmers who sell their worldly possessions to fund an escape to the greener pastures of Switzerland.
And, if foreign films aren’t your thing, you’ll be glad to know that on this weekend, from 12-5 p.m., in celebration of Palm Beach County’s centennial, the museum is offering free admission to Palm Beach County residents.
