The recent death of legendary pop icon Michael Jackson pretty much bummed me out. A true child of the '80s, it’s been weird watching a daily epilogue to all my childhood memories flash across the screen every day.
But, as always, the silver lining is not very far behind. Michael Mania has put pop culture in its proper “front and center place” and made everything '80s cool again! I’m so stoked.
St. Petersburg is getting in on the action with its latest – and I’m feeling like greatest – art exhibit: “Andy Warhol: Life and Legends.” Through August 16, The Museum of Fine Arts lets you get up-close and personal with the images that are often credited with starting the access Hollywood craze that permeates our culture.
You probably know his work, and after seeing this exhibit, you’ll love it. Unforgettable pieces of art capture some of our favorite celebs at their best, freezing that moment in time with a splash of hyper color harmony.
Iconic images of celebs like Marilyn Monroe, Dennis Hopper and Mick Jagger transformed Andy Warhol into an icon in his own right. At the St. Petersburg museum you’ll see more than 70 of his best works, including the famous Campbell’s Soup cans and boxing champ and American hero Muhammad Ali. A special treat is the inclusion of the Warhol Andy Mouse series – a spirited tribute to one Andy’s best buddies and fellow pop artist Keith Haring.
But, wait; don’t put those Wayfarers away just yet! After you check out Andy Warhol’s legendary masterpieces, head over to The Morean Arts Center to create your own. Through August 14, the Morean Arts Center is teaming up with the Museum of Fine Arts to present The Portrait Factory. Kids and adults can have a large-size photo taken, and then an Arts Center expert will provide the materials and instructions for you to create your own Andy Warhol-like image. At $15 for non-members, $12 for members, $6 for students and a half-off coupon for local framer Davidson Art Gallery means this Pop Princess is so there! Hope to see you there, too.
