Q: We will be staying in West Panama City Beach this summer and are looking for some great "boutique" shopping (not commercial/mall). Can you recommend somewhere in Panama City Beach or nearby.

A: In and around the PCB area, you have a few choices. Panama City Beach proper has the new Pier Park, which has a blend of name-brand stores and the boutiques you're looking for. And here's a full listing of boatloads of retailers in PCB. About an hour's drive away in Destin, there are a few great shopping places to choose from including Destin Commons. Grand Boulevard also has some upscale shops and restaurants that aren't your everyday, run-of-the-mill selections. Check out some info on VISITFLORIDA.com's listings to read more. Happy shopping!

A: Ingrid - Mill Top Tavern ( www.milltop.com) is located in an atmospheric 19th century mill and has long been a favorite with locals and tourists. There’s outdoor seating, great views of the harbor and live music nightly. Scarlett O'Hara's Bar and Restaurant ( www.scarlettoharas.net) was built in 1879 and is actually located in two houses that have been connected. They offer a large menu specializing in barbecue and at night there’s live entertainment and three bars, including a Ghost Bar. Scarlett O'Hara's is listed in the National Directory of Haunted Places and is said to be haunted by the man who built the house who drowned while taking a bath on the second floor, where the Ghost Bar is located. Pirates rule at the Tradewinds Lounge ( www.tradewindslounge.com) where nautical antiques and their famous Tropical Storms, complete with thunder and lightening, recall St. Augustine's history. House band Troy Locke and Matanzas play Sunday though Thursday and with other locals providing the music on their nights off. |

Q: Hi We are visiting Orlando in September. I remember the Belz outlet on International Drive but my partner thinks last time he was there it had changed names. Looking on websites now I can still see listing for Belz, is he right or did it change back?

A: Dawn - Is the Outlet still there? Yes and No. Belz has been remodelled and renamed as Prime Outlets, but it's still there at 5211 International Drive and contains over 175 designer stores, so bring an extra, empty suitcase with you to Orlando.

A: Karesa - There's lot's to do in SoBe, some of which I've blogged about on April 21st and March 25th, More info can be found in my answers to past questions on February 10 and 19, April 8 and 9. Since you'll have a car, check out Bayside Marketplace (www.baysidemarketplace.com), a shopping, dining and nightlife complex that's a lot of fun. Parking in South Beach is metered, so you'll want to park at the Westgate and walk or take a cab to places like Lincoln Road, which is primarily pedestrian and doesn't call for a car. A: Mary - I wouldn't worry about finding nightlife in Florida - it's available everywhere. Or at least it's available in the towns and cities that you're most likely to visit. Gainesville? Yup. Tampa? Yup. Ft. Myers? Yup. Tallahasee? Yup. And on and on. Don't let thoughts of nightlife possibilities limit your choices. Instead, investigate all the other options that pique your interest in a particular location - snorkeling or fishing during the day, shopping, race tracks, the beach, theater, antiquing, history? Decide on a location that appeals to you on variousl levels then email me again with your decision and I'll be glad to give you some tips on what's on in that area as far as nightlife is concerned.

A: Mark - At one time, there was The Galley on 3rd Street South, where I spent many a Saturday night dancing and taking in their drag show. This was THE venue in town, but sadly they closed a few years ago. Currently, the only place in town that I know of is Snapper's Night Club on US 41 East(www.snappersnightclub.com) They're open practically every night, but female impersonators and top 40 dance hit DJ's take place on Saturday nights. When you go, look for Chuck, the bartender - not only adorable, but he mixes a mean drink. Enjoy the show!

Q: I am a born and raised Fort Lauderdale girl, but for my 22nd birthday I want to go somewhere about 2, maybe 3 hours from here. Any recommendations on places to visit that have a great nightlife, but amazing beaches during the day?

A: Meghan - What about Ft. Myers Beach? Choose the Pink Shell, Diamondhead or other resort on Estero Boulevard and you'll be in the midst of all the action. You won't even need a car in order to take advantage of the nightlife on hand. There are fabulous beaches, restaurants galore and live music at various venues in the evenings. The Times Square district, within walking distance, offers shops and further restaurants. Places to definitely visit: the Lanai Kai during the day, where live music, food and drinks are available, at night, simply stroll Estero Boulevard and check out the bars and clubs you pass along the way. Each has a different vibe and most will have live music. This is going to be more laid back than Lauderdale, no Las Olas type glitz - the charm of Ft. Myers' Beach is that it's more like an old Florida beach town, while also providing everything you'll need for a great getaway.

A: Charmain - Perfect timing! Boy, do I know where you should look for a wedding outfit. Patricia South's Bridal Boutique in Plantation, FL, just outside of Fort Lauderdale. Q: HAving a family holiday in Kissimmee June/July this year with Grandchildren visiting Disney as the highlight, what shouldn't I miss outwith the normal tourist spots?

A: John - You're going to have a great time with the grandkids. They, and you, will have fabulous memories to last a lifetime. If no one in your party has pet allergies, take the kids to Medieval Times (www.medievaltimes.com), a full on tournament is re-enacted by knights on horseback as you enjoy a groaning board of a banquet that would have pleased even Henry VIII. Kids love the experience. As I said, do not go if anyone is allergic to horses - I know the former stunt director, who told me that it's not uncommon for them to have to call the paramedics to aid guests who didn't take the warning seriously. Sweaty horses in a confined area make for mega allergens. You'll want to also take the kids to Disney's Animal Kingdom (disneyworld.disney.go.com). You don't mention how old the kids are. If they're really young, rent a stroller so that little legs won't get tired walking the park. On a more intimate scale, visit Green Meadows Farm (www.greenmeadowsfarm.com), a real, working farm located just five miles from Orlando. In addition to a petting zoo and train rides, you will see the sights, sounds and "feel" the farm first hand on a walking tour that includes 14 stops or points of interest. The walking tour, consisting of groups ranging from 10 to 30 visitors, is on-going so there is no predetermined start time. The highlight of the farm has to be the "hands on" experience of milking a real Jersey dairy cow. If the kids are old enough, include a visit to one of the area's fabulous water parks, which is always a hit with youngsters.

A: Thirteen nights!? Lucky you! Can't miss suggestions - a spa day at Disney's Grand Floridian Hotel. Truly a fabulous experience. I went years ago and still dream about it. Time your spa visit so that you can take afternoon tea at the resort afterwards. Second suggestion - drive to Mt. Dora, located about one hour north of Orlando. A charming Victorian town, Mt. Dora will show you a completely different side of Florida. Filled with unique shops, crafters and antiques, Mt. Dora is more like the Old South than the modern day hustle and bustle of Orlando. If you can, stay overnight at the Lakeside Inn, another throw back to a quieter and more elegant time. Rooms are large and comfortable and their restaurant is a must for dinner.

A: Richard - You don't mention where in St. Pete you'll be staying. If you're downtown, check out Park Shore Plaza and BayWalk, both of which offer shopping, dining and nightlife venues. You'll also want to take the Trolley Tour of St. Pete while you're in town - a great way to get a feel for the City.

A: Jennifer - With just three nights to spend in the Miami area, I wouldn't suggest driving to the Keys - and then back. Instead, check out the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort (www.newportbeachsideresort.com) in Sunny Isle Shores, just north of Miami. Located directly on the beach, the Newport has one bedroom retreats complete with romantic jacuzzi tubs and a romance package that includes champagne, strawberries and daily breakfast in bed. Also on site is Michael's Kitchen, a fine dining venue that's already attracted the attention of locals and NBC's Today Show. At the same time, you'll be close enough to South Beach to take advantage of a night out on the town.

Q: Hi Kristine,
My son is a Junior hockey goalie, and we are visiting Coral springs in June for him to attend a hockey camp at Incredible Ice.
We will also be looking to stock up on hockey goalie gear as prices in the USA are much less than in the UK.
Can you suggest any large specialist sports stores with good hockey (goalie) departments. We are flying in and out of Orlando, so any stores beween there and Ft Lauderdale would be good.

A: Alexandra - I know that there are people offering personal shopper services throughout Florida, but don't know of any who are affilliated with an individual venue. Having said that, savvy shoppers can almost always find personal shopping services, gratis, in most stores in Florida and beyond. For instance, I have my own personal Ralph Lauren shopper at the Dillard's at Coconut Point Mall in Estero. She always lets me know when something I might like comes in. I also have a network of other "personal shoppers" at various stores throughout the State looking for all different kinds of merchandise for me on a regular basis. You can do the same thing, whether you live in Florida or are just visiting. When you visit a store, take advantage of the sales people. Rather than seeing them as pests, the next time they ask `is there anything I can help you find?" take them up on the offer. Tell the salesperson what you like, what your personal style is and ask them to show you something they feel you might be interested in. Be specific as you can be - tell them you want a killer pair of white capris, or a dress suitable for an evening do, or high thread count sheets in lime green. You'd be surprised how well some of these people know their stock and how talented they are at bringing out finds you might walk right past. Granted, this works better at boutique stores than at retail chains, but you can get lucky at the chains, too. Most Mall's and Outlet's have a customer service or concierge shopping booth. Avail yourself of these services, tell the people working there what you're after and they can help. Nine times out of ten, they'll also give you a useful savings book or other goodies most people don't know about, like info onunadvertised sales or buy one, get one offers. None of these are quite the same thing as having a personal shopper, but you'll be way ahead of the game if you follow these tips.

A: Gayle - Governor’s Square (1500 Apalachee Parkway) offers some of the best retail stores in the area, including Tallahassee's only Ann Taylor. Banana Republic, Abercrombie & Fitch, Eddie Bauer, Brookstone, The Bombay Company, the Disney Store, and The Children's Place, are located at this mall that also features JC Penny, Macy’s and Dillards, three full service restaurants and a large 500 seat food court.
Tallahassee Mall (2415 North Monroe Street) offers over 90 specialty shops, including Barnes & Noble, Gap, Structure, Victoria's Secret, Dillards, Parisian, Service Merchandise, and Oshman's Super Sports. The Mall also contains the area’s largest theatre complex, as well as full service restaurants and a "Picnic In The Park" food court.
An alternative shopping venue is Tallahassee’s Downtown Marketplace, located at Park Avenue-Ponce de Leon Park, which has specialty stores where you can find a diverse collection of artistic shops, as well as local crafts, authors, writers and poets, live jazz music, chefs, historic chats, children's storytelling, and a farmer's market, as well as many special events throughout the season.

A: Shirley - I have two favorites - the spa at the Hotel Victor on Ocean Drive, a boutique hotel spa with fantastic ambience and treatments, or, if you'll have access to a car, the spa at Grove Isle in Coconut Grove. It's about 20 minutes away, but definitely worth the trip.

A: Damien - There are plenty of place to party at in Pensacola. Bamboo Willie's at 400 Quietwater Beach Road, a beachside bar with frozen specialty drinks and a variety of live music on the weekends (Phone - 850-916-9888); McGuire's Irish Pub & Brewery downtown at 600 E Gregory Street. They serve up great corned beef and cabbage and Irish Stew and live music is on hand most nights. (Phone - 850-433-6789). Seville Quarter at 130 E Government Street (Phone - 850-434-6211) is located in a remodeled brick building with wrought iron balconies and houses a number of late night venues, including Rosie O’Grady’s, Marlene’s, Phineas Phogg’s Baloon Works, the End o’ Alley Bar and Fast Eddies’ Billiard Parlor. Take your pick and enjoy!

We are planning a week in Florida in mid May. First 3 nights would be in Orlando as both me and my wife are Disney enthusiasts. The next two nights would be at Fort Lauderdale as she wants to go there (don't ask me why). 1. Can you kindly suggest us some shopping, dining and nightlife option at Orlando and Fort Lauderdale? 2. Can you suggest us a quiter beach option within 2 to max 3 hours of Orlando for 2 nights - the last leg. We have a flight back from Orlando on Day 8.

A: Shom - Please see my previous blogs and answers for tips on shopping and nightlife if Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale. For a quiet beach option, try Vero Beach, quite near to Orlando. You can lounge around in the sand and surf the waves during the day, while there are plenty of nightlife options in the area, as well.

A: Jessica - A hotel in South Beach will put you in the middle of all the action. However, be aware that Miami or N. Miami are still nearby by car and will save you some in hotel fees, which won't be cheap in SoBe in May. SoBe hotels located on Jefferson or Washington Streets may be a tad cheaper and are all within a two block walking distance to the beach and nightlife.

A: Marcelo - The people at Toys R Us have opened stores called Babies R Us - superstores geared towards infants and toddlers. They have several locations in both Orlando and Miami - vist their website for addresses - www.babiesrus.com. Target and Walmart have a wide range of items at various prices and wholesale clubs, like Sam's, BJ's Warehouse and Costco are another good alternative. All of these stores have locations in both Orlando and Miami. For designer and high end baby stuff, visit a site called GoCityKids - GoCityKids.com - whcih will give you listings for baby boutiques in either city.

A: Kay - With eleven nights on the agenda, why lock yourselves into one location? You could do two out of the three or you could visit all three cities easily. Fly into Ft. Myers, rent a car and drive half an hour to Naples for 2-3 nights. Then drive 2 hours north to St. Pete and stay for a few nights before driving another 2 hours to Orlando. None of the driving legs of the trip will be too long and you'll have visited a nice variety of Florida cities. Lucky you!

A: Sue - The Keys are known for alot of things, but power shopping is not one of them. You'll have to confine your buying to Ft. Lauderdale. Las Olas Boulevard features 100 shops in an area a few blocks long. There are plenty of restaurants, too, so hubby can duck inside one of them for a Guiness while you browse. If you can only visit one shopping venue in Ft. Lauderdale, this would be it. See drections below. If hubby is in a really good mood and up for another jaunt, hit The Galleria, located nearby at 2414 East Sunrise Boulevard. With over 150 iconic American shops in one shopping center featuring over a million square feet of retail space, you're sure to find something to tempt you.
To Las Olas Boulevard: Take I-95 exit east on Broward Boulevard. Cross US1 (Federal Hwy.) Turn right at next light at 8th Street, two blocks to Las Olas Boulevard. On street paid parking after 6:30 pm. Paid parking lots behind stores and restaurants on the north & south sides.

A: Meredith - One of the things that makes Florida such a great vacation destination is it's broad spectrum of lodging choices. You can find moderately priced accommodations just about anywhere - along with top dollar resorts. And the fact that you're coming in August, off season, means that you'll get a great deal on hotel rates. Don't worry about a particular Florida location that will be "inexpensive." Get together with the other ladies you'll be travelling with and narrow down your choices to two or three locations and then do your research as to which of them offers the most things on your "must do/see" list. And, I really can't think of a Florida city that is not clean nor safe or that I'd warn single girls away from. Once you've decided on a destination, feel free to post another question regarding what there is to do there. Good luck!

A: Michelle - This a nightmare - I can only pick one!? In that case, I'd have to go with Sawgrass Mills. I've been going there for years and it's always a great day out. Lot's of great stores, an easy layout and great restaurants. This is marathon shopping at its best. In fact, there have been times when I've stayed over night at a nearby hotel in order to go back the following day. However, if you get there early enough, you should be able to do the entire mall before they close that evening. Wear comfortable shoes!

A: Amy - Try Martini's on Cape Coral Parkway, where entertainment is supplied by duelling piano players on the weekends. Right across the street is Pearl Ultra Lounge, a South Beach style nightclub with a DJ , multiple bars and a VIP bottle section. Beforehand, have dinner at the Cape's newest restaurant, Eight Fifty (850restaurant.com) on Lafayette, just a block away. The owners are reknowned for their other venue, the Sanibel Steakhouse, so I'd recommend the cowboy ribeye or prime rib, but they have a large selection of seafood dishes, as well. When I'm in the Cape, I always make a point of stopping in at the Sports Page on Del Prado Boulevard for their chicken wings. Ask for a game box and play the trivia game while you wait for your food - lots of fun. They also do a killer thin crust pizza.

A: Moira - Heritage Village in Crystal River is an enclave of shops housed in historic buildings just east of US 19. There are only 9 shops at present, but the setting is beautiful and if you're in the area, make a point of stopping by, If you're going to be near Tarpon Springs, visit the Sponge Factory at the entrance to the Docks at US 19 and Dodocanese Blvd. You'll find things related to the local sponge industry and its history and gift items - in addition to the largest selection of sponges anywhere! Stop by Rogers' Christmas House (www.rogerschristmashouse.com), which is really 5 houses in one, all decorated in a different theme and all offering Christmas items year round. 103 S. Saxon Ave., Brooksville. On April 26 & 27, the 3rd Annual Arts Fest (www.suncoastartsfest.com) will be taking place in New Port Richey. Over 80 artists and craftsmen will be displaying their work and the Tase of Pasco will be going on as well, so you'll be able to sample dishes from many local restaurants. As to nightlife, I would suggest asking at the front desk of your hotel for local suggestions. There aren't any large venues that I know of, but many pubs and restaurants feature live entertainment of one sort or another at the weekends, so ask the hotel staff for their recommendations. A: June - The Goodyear blimp you’re referring to is called The Spirit of Innovation and is based at the Pompano Beach Air Park. The blimp hanger, which is 45,000 square feet in size, is the largest building at the Air Park. Larry Chambers is the Pilot-in-Charge of the Spirit of Innovation. There are three other pilots on the staff - Marty Chandler, Brian Comer and Matthew St. John. Bet you didn’t know that each time the blimp flies, a ground crew follows the airship in a bus, 9-passenger van and a 40-foot specially-outfitted tractor-trailer rig. – I certainly didn’t! It’s not cheap, but it’s fantastic. Black Angus beef is served in an Old Everglades setting and they specialize in a cheese course, which is always a favorite of mine. Therefore, you can’t do better than to visit International Plaza Tampa, where you’ll find 200 specialty shops anchored by Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Dillard’s. Located in Orlando, The Florida Mall is the largest mall in Central Florida and offers a wide variety of shopping, including anchor stores Dillard's, JC Penney, Lord & Taylor. Between these two locations, you should find enough choices to ensure that you’ll find the perfect prom dress. Hint: As with any special occasion dress, make sure that it fits you comfortably – don’t choose a halter dress if you’re going to have to tug it into place every few minutes. So, do check these out when you're here and you'll find they carry more Florida themed items than you'll find up north. A: When in Miami, my best suggestion is to hit trendy Lincoln Road, where there’s a really good mix of dining and entertainment venues, not to mention a diverse crowd of party people hanging out every night in this pedestrian only area. The Road has a European vibe to it – lot’s of sidewalk tables and it’s very pet friendly. It seems as if every other person you see has their dog in tow. Check out Yuca Lounge upstairs at 501 Lincoln Road, where the second story floor to ceiling windows give those on the street below a birds-eye view of people dancing to Latin beats. Don’t know how to salsa? Lessons are available. You’ll definitely want to check out SET, the ultra chic ultra lounge at 320 Lincoln Road. The cavernous interior features banquette seating, a killer sound system, fire pits and male and female servers who roam about looking like runway models. Dress to impress or you will not get past the door police. Details at info@setmiami.com. Stop in at Sushi Samba Dromo at 600 Lincoln Road, where DJ’s spin a wide range of music and the beautiful people, including occasional celebrities, gather to drink and partake of fresh sushi. I’ll let you and your 40 friends in on a little secret - Gemma Lounge at 529 Lincoln Road. It’s located above a jewelry store, the entrance marked with a discreet plaque and a phalanx of black suited door people. Lastly, do not tell anyone that I’ve told you this, but the real place to be in SoBe right now is Washington Avenue. Start with dinner at Smith & Wollensky, the legendary steakhouse at 1 Washington Ave – make reservations (305) 673-2800. Then just literally walk the Street and choose a club. There are too many to list here, but you’ll definitely want to check out GEM at 617 and Mansion at 1235.
Key West’s Duvall Street will keep you busy for a few hours, at the very least. Then you might head over to the Historic Seaport at Key West Bight, where Key West’s maritime history is on show, plus shops restaurants and working marina. A must do is Mallory Square at sunset, where you can watch the street performers while taking in a breathtaking view. Afterwards, how about a ghost tour by lantern light with Ghost Tours of Key West ( www.hauntedtours.com). Next night, view the sunset from a different perspective – on the water. The Liberty Fleet offers sunset sails leaving the historic seaport every afternoon. Truly a one of a kind experience (www.libertyfleet.com).
In Key Largo, visit Dolphin Cove to swim with the dolphins (dolphinscove.com). You’ll want to try The Fish House, as authentic a Keys eatery as they come, at Mile Marker 102.4. A: Lisa – You don’t say if you live in Sarasota or are visiting there or if Sarasota is the only area where you’re interested in finding architectural salvage yards. I’ll assume that you have reasons for staying in the area and tell you that I, too, am interested in architectural salvage yards. They are a mine of fascinating stuff. I visited Sarasota Architectural Salvage a few years ago – it’s great. Q: Hi,
Myself and my partner (from England) are spending a fortnight in Florida for our honeymoon, we have already booked our accommodation for our 1st week at the Safari Lodge on the Disney resort.
For the 2nd week of our stay in Florida we would like to be by a nice beach with good local amenities and nightlife. Can you please suggest an area which suits a young honeymoon couple with the requirements i've mentioned? We are getting mixed reviews of areas from various website's and people that have visited and desperately need to narrow down where to stay!

A: Chris - You don't mention how far you're willing to drive from Orlando to a great beach. There are beaches on the East coast, obviously, but for what I think you're looking for, I want to suggest St. Pete Beach, which is about 2 hours from Orlando. You can drive there, park the car and forget about it all week long. St. Pete has some great hotels, all price ranges, located directly on the beach. The water the beach fronts is the Gulf of Mexico, rather than the Atlantic Ocean, however. Still, a beach is a beach. There are lots of beach bars, restaurants and nightlife venues all along Gulf Boulevard, the main thoroughfare. You can play on the beach all day long and party at night. Since you're from Merry Old, I'm assuming you want to experience the flavor a typical Florida beach town and I think you'll be happy with St. Pete Beach. Let me know what you decide and if you want further details on any location you decide upon. Congratulations on the wedding, by the way.
