| Syesha Mercado, who graduated in 2005 from the Visual and Performing Arts program at Booker High School in Sarasota, was chosen as one of American Idol’s Top 24 last night.
Mercado, 21, wowed the judges with her first audition and continued to impress them in Hollywood during the eliminations despite throat problems. Saving her voice for her audition, Mercado used cue cards to get her words across prior to her performance. Despite this, Mercado belted out her song and impressed Idol judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, who declared Mercado a real threat to her fellow competitors.
Mercado gained recognition in Florida in 2004 when she was voted best supporting actress at the Florida Theatre Conference. All of Florida will be rooting for Mercado in the weeks to come. Who knows – with her talent, this Florida native just might go on to be the next American Idol. |
