Orlando Area Flea Markets
Asked by Jennifer on May 08, 2008
Q: I am coming down to kissimee July 1st-7th and I love to go to flea markets. Do you know if there are any in the area? Thank you!
A:
Boy, are you in luck – the Orlando/Kissimmee area has some great flea markets. Here are a few to get you on your way:
Flea World - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Flea World calls itself Flea World bills itself as “America’s largest flea market” with 1,700 dealer booths, a bingo hall and an amusement park right next door. Highway 17-92 in Sanford; I-4 Exit 50.

Main Gate Flea Market is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers over 400 vendor booths. 5407 Irlo Bronson Highway (Highway 192) in Kissimmee, Phone: (407) 390-1015

Ft. Myers Beach
Asked by Meghan on May 05, 2008
Q: I am a born and raised Fort Lauderdale girl, but for my 22nd birthday I want to go somewhere about 2, maybe 3 hours from here. Any recommendations on places to visit that have a great nightlife, but amazing beaches during the day?
A: Meghan - What about Ft. Myers Beach? Choose the Pink Shell, Diamondhead or other resort on Estero Boulevard and you'll be in the midst of all the action. You won't even need a car in order to take advantage of the nightlife on hand. There are fabulous beaches, restaurants galore and live music at various venues in the evenings. The Times Square district, within walking distance, offers shops and further restaurants. Places to definitely visit: the Lanai Kai during the day, where live music, food and drinks are available, at night, simply stroll Estero Boulevard and check out the bars and clubs you pass along the way. Each has a different vibe and most will have live music. This is going to be more laid back than Lauderdale, no Las Olas type glitz - the charm of Ft. Myers' Beach is that it's more like an old Florida beach town, while also providing everything you'll need for a great getaway.

Bridal Shopping
Asked by Charmain on April 30, 2008
Q: Hi Kristine, I will be visiting Florida in July, (West & East coast) and I am looking for an outfit for my daughters wedding. Can you advise please. Thank you, kind regards, from Charmain in Sunny Scotland
A: Charmain - Perfect timing! Boy, do I know where you should look for a wedding outfit. Patricia South's Bridal Boutique in Plantation, FL, just outside of Fort Lauderdale. They have 11,000 square feet of space crammed with an array of dresses for everyone in the bridal party. I'll post a blog about it now so that you'll have all the details. Tell them that I sent you and ask for April to assist you - I guarantee that you'll find the perfect dress here.
Orlando Highlights for Kids
Asked by John Bird on April 29, 2008
Q: HAving a family holiday in Kissimmee June/July this year with Grandchildren visiting Disney as the highlight, what shouldn't I miss outwith the normal tourist spots?
A: John - You're going to have a great time with the grandkids. They, and you, will have fabulous memories to last a lifetime. If no one in your party has pet allergies, take the kids to Medieval Times (www.medievaltimes.com), a full on tournament is re-enacted by knights on horseback as you enjoy a groaning board of a banquet that would have pleased even Henry VIII. Kids love the experience. As I said, do not go if anyone is allergic to horses - I know the former stunt director, who told me that it's not uncommon for them to have to call the paramedics to aid guests who didn't take the warning seriously. Sweaty horses in a confined area make for mega allergens.  You'll want to also take the kids to Disney's Animal Kingdom (disneyworld.disney.go.com). You don't mention how old the kids are. If they're really young, rent a stroller so that little legs won't get tired walking the park. On a more intimate scale, visit Green Meadows Farm (www.greenmeadowsfarm.com), a real, working farm located just five miles from Orlando. In addition to a petting zoo and train rides, you will see the sights, sounds and "feel" the farm first hand on a walking tour that includes 14 stops or points of interest. The walking tour, consisting of groups ranging from 10 to 30 visitors, is on-going so there is no predetermined start time. The highlight of the farm has to be the "hands on" experience of milking a real Jersey dairy cow. If the kids are old enough, include a visit to one of the area's fabulous water parks, which is always a hit with youngsters.
Asked by Cathie on April 29, 2008
Q: Hi. I will be staying at the Coral Reef in St Petes Beach in May. Any suggestions for economical shopping and attractions? Thanks
A: Cathie - May is the perfect time to be in Florida, you're going to love it! If you'll scroll through both my past blogs and answers to questions, you'll find plenty of leads on what to do in the area.
Nearby Orlando Options
Asked by Cat Roberts on April 29, 2008
Q: Hi Kristine-My self and my mum (21+50) are coming to stay in Orlando for 13 nights from 13th Aug onwards. I've been before, and my mum hasn't. We are hiring a car for 7 nights. I was just wondering if there was one thing you thought was a 'must not miss' ? Thanks!
A: Thirteen nights!? Lucky you! Can't miss suggestions - a spa day at Disney's Grand Floridian Hotel. Truly a fabulous experience. I went years ago and still dream about it. Time your spa visit so that you can take afternoon tea at the resort afterwards. Second suggestion - drive to Mt. Dora, located about one hour north of Orlando. A charming Victorian town, Mt. Dora will show you a completely different side of Florida. Filled with unique shops, crafters and antiques, Mt. Dora is more like the Old South than the modern day hustle and bustle of Orlando. If you can, stay overnight at the Lakeside Inn, another throw back to a quieter and more elegant time. Rooms are large and comfortable and their restaurant is a must for dinner.
Shopping St. Pete
Asked by richard on April 26, 2008
Q: hi kristine i'm staying at st petes beach in august what are the best shops in the surrounding area thanks richard
A: Richard - You don't mention where in St. Pete you'll be staying. If you're downtown, check out Park Shore Plaza and BayWalk, both of which offer shopping, dining and nightlife venues. You'll also want to take the Trolley Tour of St. Pete while you're in town - a great way to get a feel for the City.
Romantic Miami Getaway
Asked by Jennifer on April 25, 2008
Q: Hi. My husband and I will be celebrating our 15th anniversary in June and will be flying into Miami and staying for 3 nights. We don't know howver, where to go! We want it all, beautiful beaches, great nightlife, and maybe even some romance. Do you have any suggestions? We were thinking about staying in the keys but would love some other suggestions in driving distance from the airport. Thanks!
A:

Jennifer - With just three nights to spend in the Miami area, I wouldn't suggest driving to the Keys - and then back. Instead, check out the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort (www.newportbeachsideresort.com) in Sunny Isle Shores, just north of Miami. Located directly on the beach, the Newport has one bedroom retreats complete with romantic jacuzzi tubs and a romance package that includes champagne, strawberries and daily breakfast in bed. Also on site is Michael's Kitchen, a fine dining venue that's already attracted the attention of locals and NBC's Today Show. At the same time, you'll be close enough to South Beach to take advantage of a night out on the town.

Hockey Equipment
Asked by Adrian Weatherley on April 20, 2008
Q: Hi Kristine, My son is a Junior hockey goalie, and we are visiting Coral springs in June for him to attend a hockey camp at Incredible Ice. We will also be looking to stock up on hockey goalie gear as prices in the USA are much less than in the UK. Can you suggest any large specialist sports stores with good hockey (goalie) departments. We are flying in and out of Orlando, so any stores beween there and Ft Lauderdale would be good. many Thanks Adrian Weatherley
A: Adrian - What a fantastic experience for your son! He's going to love hockey camp.According to the Florida Panthers Website, The Hockey Lockerin Davie, Florida is the place to go, although this would be out of your way. The family-run shop has a wide selection of skates and other hockey equipment. I suggest you visit their website in advance of your visit and email them in order to ask whether they know of any other good stores in the Orlando Coral Springs areas: www.thehockeylocker.com
Personal Shopper
Asked by alexandra on April 17, 2008
Q: Dear Kristine, we are wondering whether one could find a personal shopping guide at Florida's malls? Meaning a person that walks around with you leading the way to the best shops, designer outlets etc.? Thanks a lot for your help, Alexandra
A: Alexandra - I know that there are people offering personal shopper services throughout Florida, but don't know of any who are affilliated with an individual venue. Having said that, savvy shoppers can almost always find personal shopping services, gratis, in most stores in Florida and beyond. For instance, I have my own personal Ralph Lauren shopper at the Dillard's at Coconut Point Mall in Estero. She always lets me know when something I might like comes in. I also have a network of other "personal shoppers" at various stores throughout the State looking for all different kinds of merchandise for me on a regular basis. You can do the same thing, whether you live in Florida or are just visiting. When you visit a store, take advantage of the sales people. Rather than seeing them as pests, the next time they ask `is there anything I can help you find?" take them up on the offer. Tell the salesperson what you like, what your personal style is and ask them to show you something they feel you might be interested in. Be specific as you can be - tell them you want a killer pair of white capris, or a dress suitable for an evening do, or high thread count sheets in lime green. You'd be surprised how well some of these people know their stock and how talented they are at bringing out finds you might walk right past. Granted, this works better at boutique stores than at retail chains, but you can get lucky at the chains, too. Most Mall's and Outlet's have a customer service or concierge shopping booth. Avail yourself of these services, tell the people working there what you're after and they can help. Nine times out of ten, they'll also give you a useful savings book or other goodies most people don't know about, like info onunadvertised sales or buy one, get one offers. None of these are quite the same thing as having a personal shopper, but you'll be way ahead of the game if you follow these tips.
Shopping in Tallahassee
Asked by Gayle Simpson on April 14, 2008
Q: I am planning a trip to the Tallahasse area. Can you tell me where some good shopping areas are in that City?
A:
Gayle - Governor’s Square (1500 Apalachee Parkway) offers some of the best retail stores in the area, including Tallahassee's only Ann Taylor. Banana Republic, Abercrombie & Fitch, Eddie Bauer, Brookstone, The Bombay Company, the Disney Store, and The Children's Place, are located at this mall that also features JC Penny, Macy’s and Dillards, three full service restaurants and a large 500 seat food court.
Tallahassee Mall (2415 North Monroe Street) offers over 90 specialty shops, including Barnes & Noble, Gap, Structure, Victoria's Secret, Dillards, Parisian, Service Merchandise, and Oshman's Super Sports. The Mall also contains the area’s largest theatre complex, as well as full service restaurants and a "Picnic In The Park" food court.

An alternative shopping venue is Tallahassee’s Downtown Marketplace, located at Park Avenue-Ponce de Leon Park, which has specialty stores where you can find a diverse collection of artistic shops, as well as local crafts, authors, writers and poets, live jazz music, chefs, historic chats, children's storytelling, and a farmer's market, as well as many special events throughout the season.

Miami Spas
Asked by Shirley on April 09, 2008
Q: hi, I going to Miami to find some spa, What are some spa to go?
A: Shirley - I have two favorites - the spa at the Hotel Victor on Ocean Drive, a boutique hotel spa with fantastic ambience and treatments, or, if you'll have access to a car, the spa at Grove Isle in Coconut Grove. It's about 20 minutes away, but definitely worth the trip.

A: Damien - There are plenty of place to party at in Pensacola.   Bamboo Willie's at 400 Quietwater Beach Road, a beachside bar with frozen specialty drinks and a variety of live music on the weekends (Phone -  850-916-9888); McGuire's Irish Pub & Brewery downtown at 600 E Gregory Street. Asked by Ciaran on April 05, 2008
Q: Hi Kristine, My family and I (From Ireland) are staying in Orlando and West Palm Beach. We were wondering where the best malls are. I am also big into magic and I was wondering are there any magic stores in/near the Orlando/West Palm Beach area(Whenever I search for magic stores, I always find the Orlando Magic B-Ball team!!). Thanks!
A: Ciaran - I've given lot's of great shopping tips, especially for the Orlando area, in previous answers. Check them out for all you'll need to know. As to magic shops, visit www.palmbeachmagicshop.com for the biggest shop in the Palm Beaches and www.magiclegends.com for a shop in the Orlando area. You can email them both and ask if they know any others in the area. Have a great time!
Asked by Shom on April 04, 2008
Q: Hi Kristine, We are planning a week in Florida in mid May. First 3 nights would be in Orlando as both me and my wife are Disney enthusiasts. The next two nights would be at Fort Lauderdale as she wants to go there (don't ask me why). 1. Can you kindly suggest us some shopping, dining and nightlife option at Orlando and Fort Lauderdale? 2. Can you suggest us a quiter beach option within 2 to max 3 hours of Orlando for 2 nights - the last leg. We have a flight back from Orlando on Day 8.
A: Shom - Please see my previous blogs and answers for tips on shopping and nightlife if Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale. For a quiet beach option, try Vero Beach, quite near to Orlando. You can lounge around in the sand and surf the waves during the day, while there are plenty of nightlife options in the area, as well.
Asked by Stephanie on April 03, 2008
Q: Kristine, My girlfriends and I (20 years old) are looking for an area in florida where we can enjoy the beach in the daytime, shop in the evening, and explore the nightlife (clubs, etc) What are your suggestions?
A: Stephanie - I would suggest St. Pete Beach, which has great clubs, fabulous shopping and, of course, killer beaches. See my previous answers and blogs for tips on where to go for nightlife and shopping.
Asked by Jessica on March 31, 2008
Q: Hi Kristine, my friends are I are planning to go to the Miami area in late May. We would love to stay in the middle of the night life, close to the shops, & restaurants. We are trying to book a hotel, but are not sure if we book one in Miami, N.Miami or South Beach. Thanks.
A: Jessica - A hotel in South Beach will put you in the middle of all the action. However, be aware that Miami or N. Miami are still nearby by car and will save you some in hotel fees, which won't be cheap in SoBe in May. SoBe hotels located on Jefferson or Washington Streets may be a tad cheaper and are all within a two block walking distance to the beach and nightlife.

11 Night Florida Itinerary
Asked by kay perry on March 24, 2008
Q: Hi,we have a weding in Nantucket on the 6 sptember, but myself and my husband & 2 year old son thought we would visit florida for 11 nites before hand and then get internal flight via boston. We are a bit stuck of were to stay we like beach and pool and shops in evening. Please help we are stuck as to were togo i suggested Naples my husband said st petes/disnyland.Please help
A: Kay - With eleven nights on the agenda, why lock yourselves into one location? You could do two out of the three or you could visit all three cities easily. Fly into Ft. Myers, rent a car and drive half an hour to Naples for 2-3 nights. Then drive 2 hours north to St. Pete and stay for a few nights before driving another 2 hours to Orlando. None of the driving legs of the trip will be too long and you'll have visited a nice variety of Florida cities. Lucky you!
Asked by Sherrell on March 23, 2008
Q: My best friend will be visiting fron IL in April. She wants to see either Daytona beach or Orlando. I am not familiar with FL myself. Which one is better for shopping during the day and then dancing at a R&B/Pop nightclub? Need suggestions for a girls night out?
A: Sherrell - Orlando definitely has more shopping venues. For shopping and nightlife suggestions, please see my anwer to Vani's question on February 28; my answer to Catherine's question on February 22; my answer to Amanda on March 10 and my answer to Sam on March 16th. That should get you started!
Asked by Sam on March 16, 2008
Q: Hi, I'm due to stay in Kissimmee this May and wondered if you can tell me of any alternative/rock music bars and clubs in the local area? We are willing to travel up to around 30mins drive away. Thank you!
A: Sam - Seeking to appeal to all potential customers, most bars don't specialize in a particular musical genre, but they do have nights on which they do feature alternative rock. The Social (thesocial.org) is a bustling, high energy Orlando venue that features Alternative music. Visit the site to see the schedule. Likewise, Sun on the Beach (www.sobafterdark.com/) in Kissimmee's Old Town has alternative on their line up, as well.
Ft. Lauderdale Shopping
Asked by sue macallister(Ireland) on March 15, 2008
Q: will be flying in to Fort Lauderdale in May and staying overnight in Florida coty before going to the Keys for a fortnight.Where is the best place(shopping centre)to find a good variety of shops in those areas?I need to have it well thought out as husband is low on patience for shopping!!
A:

Sue - The Keys are known for alot of things, but power shopping is not one of them. You'll have to confine your buying to Ft. Lauderdale. Las  Olas Boulevard features 100 shops in an area a few blocks long. There are plenty of restaurants, too, so hubby can duck inside one of them for a Guiness while you browse. If you can only visit one shopping venue in Ft. Lauderdale, this would be it. See drections below. If hubby is in a really good mood and up for another jaunt, hit The Galleria, located nearby at 2414 East Sunrise Boulevard. With over 150 iconic American shops in one shopping center featuring over a million square feet of retail space, you're sure to find something to tempt you.

To Las Olas Boulevard: Take I-95 exit east on Broward Boulevard. Cross US1 (Federal Hwy.) Turn right at next light at 8th Street, two blocks to Las Olas Boulevard. On street paid parking after 6:30 pm. Paid parking lots behind stores and restaurants on the north & south sides.

Florida's Beaches
Asked by Meredith on March 15, 2008
Q: My best friends and I want to come to Florida in August. We're three young women (23 and 24) looking for a good beach, some good restaurants, and some good bars/clubs to go to at night, especially for dancing. We can't spend a ton of money, but we want to go somewhere clean and safe. What are your suggestions?
A: Meredith - One of the things that makes Florida such a great vacation destination is it's broad spectrum of lodging choices. You can find moderately priced accommodations just about anywhere - along with top dollar resorts. And the fact that you're coming in August, off season, means that you'll get a great deal on hotel rates. Don't worry about a particular Florida location that will be "inexpensive." Get together with the other ladies you'll be travelling with and narrow down your choices to two or three locations and then do your research as to which of them offers the most things on your "must do/see" list. And, I really can't think of a Florida city that is not clean nor safe or that I'd warn single girls away from. Once you've decided on a destination, feel free to post another question regarding what there is to do there. Good luck!
Nightlife Suggestions Tampa/St. Pete
Asked by Moe on March 14, 2008
Q: Kristine I'm going to tampa/STP area in early May what kind of night life is out there? Music/dancing/comedy clubs?
A:

Moe - Start your night off at Civiche Tapas Bar and Restaurant (95 Central Ave. St. Pete) for a fun alternative to dinner out. They have live Flamenco music on Wednesdays and Saturday nights. Afterwards, stop in at The Rare Olive Martini Bar (www.rareolive.com) for a chocolate martini and live music. If you like country music, head to The Round Up (www.theroundup.com) in Tampa. Since 1995, Toby Keith, Tracy Byrd, Gary Allen, Tracy Lawrence, Chris Ledoux, Trick Pony, Rascal Flatts, Joe Diffie, Lee Ann Womack and many more have played at The Round Up. As Kenny Chesney said on CMT, "I knew I'd made it when I played at The Round Up."  The Round Up has been nominated Nightclub of the Year by the Academy of Country Music. Coconut's Comedy Club is located at the Tradewinds Resort, 6100 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach. they have live comedy acts every weekend. Call 727-360-7935 to find out who'll be appearing when you're in town.  You can also spend an evening at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (www.seminolehardrock.com) in Tampa, which has many nightclub venues offering a wide variety of musical styles and themes and an Improv Comedy Club.

Gator's Dockside Lake Mary
Asked by Don on March 14, 2008
Q: Hi, My brother in law used to live in Lake Mary. While my wife and I were there we heard about a sports bar named Gators. They were in Appopka(sp) and heard that they served the best chicken wings around. My wife and I couldn't get enough of them. In fact, we got married in Sanford, 9yrs ago, we had our reception at Gators. I've heard they've opened more locations. Can you tell me what they're full name is and where are their locations. Thanks!
A: Don - There are now 18 Gator's Dockside locations throughout Florida - all of them still serving those wings that everyone raves about. Check out their website for locations and menu at  www.gatorsdockside.com.

Premium Outlets Orlando
Asked by Amanda on March 10, 2008
Q: Will be in Orlando at the end of April. Where is the best "outlet" shopping. I'm looking for kids and womens clothing.
A:

Amanda - Orlando-s Premium Outlets (www.premiumoutlets.com) is the place to go.  With over 110 stores, everyone is sure find a few "must haves." Visit their website and click on VIP Club to sign up for exclusive online coupons and a free VIP book with further coupons.

Asked by Michele Lamberg on March 10, 2008
Q: What shopping center do you 'pick'? St Augustine Premium Outlets, or Sawgrass Mills, or The Mall at Millenia or St Armands Circle?
A: Michelle - This a nightmare - I can only pick one!? In that case, I'd have to go with Sawgrass Mills. I've been going there for years and it's always a great day out. Lot's of great stores, an easy layout and great restaurants. This is marathon shopping at its best. In fact, there have been times when I've stayed over night at a nearby hotel in order to go back the following day. However, if you get there early enough, you should be able to do the entire mall before they close that evening. Wear comfortable shoes!
Underage Club Ban
Asked by Joy on March 09, 2008
Q: Any clubs that allow under age (15) in at night? Either live music or DJ. Will be in INdian Rocks with my 15 yo daughter week before Easter.
A: Joy - I admit you've got me stumped. I know that quite a few Florida Counties have totally banned underaged kids from nightclubs due to problems with liquor laws. I'll see what I can find out and get back to you with any thing I can find out.
Nightlife Cape Coral
Asked by Amy on March 06, 2008
Q: We will be in Cape Coral from March 21st - March 26th and we will be looking for some places to go for drinks at night...can you help?
A: Amy - Try Martini's on Cape Coral Parkway, where entertainment is supplied by duelling piano players on the weekends. Right across the street is Pearl Ultra Lounge, a South Beach style nightclub with a DJ , multiple bars and a VIP bottle section.  Beforehand, have dinner at the Cape's newest restaurant, Eight Fifty (850restaurant.com) on Lafayette, just a block away. The owners are reknowned for their other venue, the Sanibel Steakhouse, so I'd recommend the cowboy ribeye or prime rib, but they have a large selection of seafood dishes, as well.  When I'm in the Cape, I always make a point of stopping in at the Sports Page on Del Prado Boulevard for their chicken wings. Ask for a game box and play the trivia game while you wait for your food - lots of fun.  They also do a killer thin crust pizza.

Shopping Hernando County
Asked by moira on March 05, 2008
Q: Hi Kristine, Will be in the Hernando county area in Apr. Any suggestions for good shopping deals and a night out with my husband?
A:

Moira - Heritage Village in Crystal River is an enclave of shops housed in historic buildings just east of US 19. There are only 9 shops at present, but the setting is beautiful and if you're in the area, make a point of stopping by,  If you're going to be near Tarpon Springs, visit the Sponge Factory at the entrance to the Docks at US 19 and Dodocanese Blvd. You'll find things related to the local sponge industry and its history and gift items - in addition to the largest selection of sponges anywhere! Stop by Rogers' Christmas House (www.rogerschristmashouse.com), which is really 5 houses in one, all decorated in a different theme and all offering Christmas items year round. 103 S. Saxon Ave., Brooksville.  On April 26 & 27, the 3rd Annual Arts Fest (www.suncoastartsfest.com) will be taking place in New Port Richey. Over 80 artists and craftsmen will be displaying their work and the Tase of Pasco will be going on as well, so you'll be able to sample dishes from many local restaurants. As to nightlife, I would suggest asking at the front desk of your hotel for local suggestions. There aren't any large venues that I know of, but many pubs and restaurants feature live entertainment of one sort or another at the weekends, so ask the hotel staff for their recommendations. And, as always, if you find something really cool, email me and let me know!

Campfires Destin Beaches
Asked by R. Claire on March 01, 2008
Q: I'm going to Destin in May with 3 other ladies. Are there any beaches in the area, where we could have a fire on the beach--do hot dogs, smores etc. One of the ladies is retiring and we hoped to do something different than going to a restaurant or club. We didn't know if such things are outlawed. Maybe there are places with grills (?) Thanks

Goodyear Blimp Ft. Lauderdale
Asked by June Davis on February 22, 2008
Q: I've heard that I can get a good look at the Goodyear blimp around the Ft. Lauderdale area. Is this true? I will be in the area March 10-17th.
A:
June - The Goodyear blimp you’re referring to is called The Spirit of Innovation and is based at the Pompano Beach Air Park. The blimp hanger, which is 45,000 square feet in size, is the largest building at the Air Park.  Larry Chambers is the Pilot-in-Charge of the Spirit of Innovation. There are three other pilots on the staff - Marty Chandler, Brian Comer and Matthew St. John. Bet you didn’t know that each time the blimp flies, a ground crew follows the airship in a bus, 9-passenger van and a 40-foot specially-outfitted tractor-trailer rig. – I certainly didn’t! If you want to make sure you’ll see the blimp while you’re in Ft. Lauderdale, call 954-946-8300 or visit goodyearblimp.com to ask when and where they’ll be flying.

International Plaza Tampa
Asked by maria on February 21, 2008
Q: going to floridA IN OCTOBER/NOVEMBER TIME INTERNATIONAL DRIVE BEST PLACE TO SHOP FOR CLOTHES THAT ARE BARGINS, ALSO GOLD AND WATCHES(NAME BRANDS)
A:
Maria – International Plaza is THE place to start any shopping expedition in Tampa and if you search, you’ll be able to find a bargain or two. However, for lot’s of bargains in one place, visit Prime Outlets, about an hour from Tampa in Ellenton (www.primeoutlets.com), which has been rated one of the Top 25 outlet malls in America. 5461 Factory Shops Blvd., Ellenton Phone: (941) 723-1150. The Big Top Flea Market on East Fowler in Tampa (www.bigtopfleamarket.com) is lots of fun, too and they have watches galore. Also antiques and collectibles and more than 1,200 vendor booths. Plan to spend a few hours there – at least!
Kissimmee Restaurants
Asked by catherine on February 21, 2008
Q: HI, could you suggest where is best to go for a night out, around florida/kissimee?? We will be staying in kissimee so don't want to have to travel too far! We are a young couple just wanting a couple of good nights out whilst we are in florida. Thanks
A:
Catherine – There are many restaurant options in Kissimmee, as all of the nationwide chains have a presence there, but for a special night out, book in at the Old Hickory Steakhouse at the Gaylord Palms Hotel. It’s not cheap, but it’s fantastic. Black Angus beef is served in an Old Everglades setting and they specialize in a cheese course, which is always a favorite of mine. The Maitre d' Fromage will stop by your table and explain the various cheeses from around the world to you. They have a fabulous wine list and the service is top notch. 6000 W Osceola Pkwy, Kissimmee, Phone:  (407) 586-1600
Fun Venues in Miami
Asked by VICTORIA on February 19, 2008
Q: HI KRISTINE! I WILL BE IN MIAMI ON MARCH WITH MY SISTER AND MY MOTHER. DURING OUR STAY IN THAT CITY, WILL BE MY SISTER`S BIRTHDAY ... I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE DINNER IN A SPECIAL AND FUNNY PLACE OR MAKE SOME SPECIAL TOUR DURING THE DAY. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTION????
A:
Victoria – Great thought for a birthday blowout! Taverna Opa is lots of fun – Greek food accompanied by music, smashing plates, belly dancers and a festive atmosphere that involves all the diners in the party. They’re at 36 Ocean Drive (305) 673-6730. Then there’s Arturo Sandoval’s Jazz Club located at the Deauville Beach Resort, 6701 Collins Ave. Entrees are given “jazzy” names and you can dine while listening to live entertainment. Call (305) 403-7565. Mango’s Tropical Café (www.mangostropicalcafe.com) is a SoBe tourist staple that offers a casual menu and lots of action – professional dancers appear all night long on a raised platform in the middle of the dance floor. Live music and a party atmosphere are on hand every night. Daytime tours aren’t a problem in SoBe either – take a GoCar Tour (www.gocartours.com) which offers the worlds first GPS-guided, storytelling cars. You’ll get into a snappy, yellow two-seater vehicle and be taken on a programmed tour that you select around Miami Beach. You’ll listen to a narrative that will direct you along the route and explain the points of interest along the way. The best part is that you can stop whenever you like in order to investigate something that particularly catches your interest or for photo-ops along your route.  Happy Birthday!

Q: Dear Kristine, Should you have to recommend 3 lifestyle events/festivals and 3 sporting events in Florida in 2008, what would they be? Thanks.
A:
Dominic – Anywhere around the State?  Where do I start? Sporting events – The Annual All Florida Championship Rodeo in Arcadia (www.arcadiarodeo.com) is always a lot of fun. Or you could take in an Orlando Magic basket ball game from January to February each year - www.orlandomagic.com. We Floridians are lucky enough to have fourteen major league baseball teams here each year for Spring training. Locations are statewide, so visit www.springtrainingonline.com Pioneer Florida Festival in Dade City, which offers all-day entertainment including gospel, folk and country music; craft demonstrations, an Arts & Crafts Show, children's activities, antique cars and tractors and lots of good food. Shopping Tampa/Orlando
Asked by Anna on February 18, 2008
Q: Where can you shop for prom dresses at fairly reasonable prices (up to 400) in orlando or tampa area? Thanks so much.
A:
Anna – Unfortunately, looking for the perfect prom dress always means comparison shopping. Therefore, you can’t do better than to visit International Plaza Tampa, where you’ll find 200 specialty shops anchored by Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Dillard’s. Located in Orlando, The Florida Mall  is the largest mall in Central Florida and offers a wide variety of shopping, including anchor stores Dillard's, JC Penney, Lord & Taylor. Between these two locations, you should find enough choices to ensure that you’ll find the perfect prom dress. Hint: As with any special occasion dress, make sure that it fits you comfortably – don’t choose a halter dress if you’re going to have to tug it into place every few minutes. Leave yourself enough time between buying the dress and prom night in order to take it in for alterations if need be. Lastly, make sure those adorable shoes you buy to match the dress fit properly. There’s nothing worse than having your feet hurt on the big night!
Shopping Orlando
Asked by Vani on February 17, 2008
Q: In March, I'm hoping to do a little shopping in the Orlando-Miami area and pick up some tropical-style home decorations, the kind you'd find in Pier One or Pottery Barn type of stores. I'm particularly interested in picking up the following: Hawaiian-style fabric; tropical-themed home decor (including bedding, curtains etc.); seashell theme decor (not the touristy tacky / kitschy knickknacks); surfer-themed decor. If you know of any stores that might carry these at a reasonable price, please post. Thanks in advance!
A:

Vani - Most Florida counterparts of the type of stores you mention - Pottery Barn and Pier one - change the stock in their Florida locations to reflect the tastes of the area. So, do check these out when you're here and you'll find they carry more Florida themed items than you'll find up north. Also, Kirkland's Home, Home Goods and SteinMart are good sources for all sorts of household items with a Florida flair and are reasonably priced. As far as fabric is concerned, you’ll want to check out Boca Bargoons, who sells a vast variety of fabrics at discount prices. Their location near Orlando is at 376 State Road 436, Casselberry, FL 32707, Phone Number: (407) 339-0059. Near Miami, 202 Old Federal Hwy., Hallandale, FL. 33009 Phone Number (954) 456-1300.

Miami Nightlife
Asked by david on February 10, 2008
Q: Whats on and to do for a 3 days in Miami sept 7,8 and 9. then key west for two days then key largo for two days. Things to do and must see, good places to eat etc... Regards from Scotland.
A:
When in Miami, my best suggestion is to hit trendy Lincoln Road, where there’s a really good mix of dining and entertainment venues, not to mention a diverse crowd of party people hanging out every night in this pedestrian only area. The Road has a European vibe to it – lot’s of sidewalk tables and it’s very pet friendly. It seems as if every other person you see has their dog in tow. Check out Yuca Lounge upstairs at 501 Lincoln Road, where the second story floor to ceiling windows give those on the street below a birds-eye view of people dancing to Latin beats. Don’t know how to salsa? Lessons are available. You’ll definitely want to check out SET, the ultra chic ultra lounge at 320 Lincoln Road. The cavernous interior features banquette seating, a killer sound system, fire pits and male and female servers who roam about looking like runway models. Dress to impress or you will not get past the door police. Details at info@setmiami.com. Stop in at Sushi Samba Dromo at 600 Lincoln Road, where DJ’s spin a wide range of music and the beautiful people, including occasional celebrities, gather to drink and partake of fresh sushi. I’ll let you and your 40 friends in on a little secret - Gemma Lounge at 529 Lincoln Road. It’s located above a jewelry store, the entrance marked with a discreet plaque and a phalanx of black suited door people. Less crowded than most other venues, you’ll want to jostle for a place on the balcony so that you can overpay for your cocktail (average SoBe cocktail prices are $8-$10) and sip it while watching the action below on Lincoln Road.

If you’re into karaoke, you’ll find Studio at the Shelborne Hotel at 1801 Collins Avenue, the biggest Karaoke club in the world with over 22,000 songs in 20 languages Open 7 nights a week until 5am., the venue has a giant dance floor with lasers, strobe lights and smoke and Studio offers the chance to jam with a live band and to take home a professional CD of your performance. Don’t be surprised if you see celebrities jamming on stage. More at

Lastly, do not tell anyone that I’ve told you this, but the real place to be in SoBe right now is Washington Avenue. Start with dinner at Smith & Wollensky, the legendary steakhouse at 1 Washington Ave – make reservations (305) 673-2800. Then just literally walk the Street and choose a club. There are too many to list here, but you’ll definitely want to check out GEM at 617 and Mansion at 1235.

Key West’s Duvall Street will keep you busy for a few hours, at the very least. Then you might head over to the Historic Seaport at Key West Bight, where Key West’s maritime history is on show, plus shops restaurants and working marina. A must do is Mallory Square at sunset, where you can watch the street performers while taking in a breathtaking view. Afterwards, how about a ghost tour by lantern light with Ghost Tours of Key West (www.hauntedtours.com). Next night, view the sunset from a different perspective – on the water. The Liberty Fleet offers sunset sails leaving the historic seaport every afternoon. Truly a one of a kind experience (www.libertyfleet.com).

In Key Largo, visit Dolphin Cove to swim with the dolphins (dolphinscove.com). You’ll want to try The Fish House, as authentic a Keys eatery as they come, at Mile Marker 102.4. If steaks are more to your liking, try Ziggie & Mad Dog’s at Mile Marker 83. Their rib eye’s and porterhouses are fantastic and Sunday is Prime Rib Night. For nightlife, the Big Fish Club at Mile Marker 99 in Key Largo is the areas biggest dance club, with live music and DJ’s. The nearby Fish House Encore, at Mile Marker 102.4, offers a mellower atmosphere and a piano bar.
Key West & Hard Rock Casino
Asked by stacey on February 06, 2008
Q: I live in Palm Beach Gardens and am looking to do something special for my boyfriends birthday in March. Do you have any ideas? I'm thinking either Key West or something like that where we can spend some quality time and still enjoy the nightlife.
A: Stacey - My boyfriend's b'day is in March, too! Key West is grand and if you go, I suggest that you stay at The Pilot House B&B in the Otto Mansion just one block from Duvall Street. It's my favorite and features a charming courtyard pool area. Some rooms have fireplaces or jacuzzis. Visit www.pilothousekeywest.com for details. If you want to stay closer to home, but still feel like you're somewhere totally different, I suggest the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. See my blog on it on  my page. There's nightlife galore at the adjacent Seminole Paradise and a pool with cabanas you can lounge at by day. www.seminolehardrockhollywood.com. Or you might consider staying in Coral Gables, which offers many hotel options and an abundance of nightlife. Stay at the Hyatt Regency (coralgables.hyatt.com), which would put in the middle of all the action. If need be, email me again when you decide on a destination and I'll be glad to suggest nightlife venues.
Redneck Vacation Suggestions
Asked by Deborah on February 06, 2008
Q: My husband and I have not been away from the kids in 12 years. We are in our late 30's and just a little on the redneck side. We are intersted in fun and romance. any ideas would be appreciated.
A:

Deborah - Fun and romance sound grand! You don't specify a location within Florida, so I'll assume that you're open to considering any area. First of all, there's the Lakeside Inn in Mt. Dora. Steeped in history, the property offers a first class dining room as well as gorgeous accommodations and many package options. The town of Mt. Dora is a quaint Victorian setting with many shops and the Windsor Rose Tea Room. Renningers Antique Center is nearby and features many dealers. Or you could rent a boat and cruise the lake. Or take a horse and carriage ride. Visit www.lakeside-inn.com for details.

Then there's the historic St. Francis Inn in St. Augustine, a bed & breakfast wit 14 charming rooms, some with jacuzzi's and fireplaces. They offer unheard of guest amenities, including chauffered evening transporation, sherry and fresh flowers in your room, an evening social hour and desserts. Check www.stfrancisinn.com to see their great packages. St. Augustine itself is filled with historic charm, great antique shops, boutiques and many museums.

If you want to get back to your Redneck roots, there's the Westgate River Ranch in River Ranch in Central Florida. A true dude ranch, the Westgate offers luxurious Western style accommodations and horseback riding, fishing, boating, trap and skeet, swimming pool, airboat rides and hayrides and a petting zoo. You and hubby can go line dancing at the River Ranch Saloon. There's even a sanctioned rodeo every Saturday night . Visit www.westgateriverranch.com for details.

Ballroom Dancing Central Florida
Asked by Charlene on February 01, 2008
Q: Our family is planning to visit gparents that recently moved to central FL in Mar. I have 2 teen daughters that have been taking ballroom lessons and they would like the opportunity to show off to the grandpa what they have been learning. He was a dance instructor when he was young and they want to find a place that welcomes teens to dance with him while there. Is there a ballroom that has live orchestra for ballroom dancing or a place where they could dance swing with him? Thanks.
A: Charlene - This is fantastic! Were your daughters inspired by Dancing With The Stars? You don't narrow down your location in Central Florida, so I've given you the web address for the Central Florida Ballroom Dance site:  www.ballroomdance.meetup.com/114/ Here you'll find locations throughout the area and locations where the girls can wow their Grandpa.

Asked by Pam on February 01, 2008
Q: My best friend and I were thinking of doing a girls' weekend in Sarasota, but then I heard that Sarasota's not very "hip". Is this true? Any good nightlife places to check out while I'm there? Shopping? Cool restaurants?
A:
Pam – Sarasota has enough “hip” things to keep you happy for a weekend – at least. For shopping, you’re going to want to hit St. Armand’s Circle. It’s THE place to shop in town and offers a wide range of shops and restaurants. For a complete business listing, visit www.starmandscircleassoc.com. As to nightlife, I always check out the Gator Club whenever I’m in town. It has a honky tonk feel, a pool room upstairs and music and dancing every night. www.thegatorclub.com. Minx Ultra Lounge has a huge dance floor, DJ’s and  enormous video screens. High energy is key here. www.minxx.biz. Next, Club Escapes offers everything from Bike Night to Latin Night to female impersonators. This newish nightspot draws a truly diverse crowd and is a lot of fun. www.clubescapes.com.

Q: Hi, i am a collector and like to go to stores with architectural salvage, home decor, and cool old stuff. I heard that Sarasota Architectural Salvage is a good place to visit. Have you been there? What can you reccommend.
A:
Lisa – You don’t say if you live in Sarasota or are visiting there or if Sarasota is the only area where you’re interested in finding architectural salvage yards. I’ll assume that you have reasons for staying in the area and tell you that I, too, am interested in architectural salvage yards. They are a mine of fascinating stuff. I visited Sarasota Architectural Salvage a few years ago – it’s great. They literally have everything you can imagine: door knobs, lighting, plumbing fixtures, fireplace surrounds, garden furniture, etc. etc. etc. For opening hours visit sarasotasalvage.com or call (941) 362-0803.
