Those with their eyes in the sky will be glad to know that the peregrine falcon may be coming off the list of endangered species in Florida. A study by three noted bird experts concluded that the great feathered animals don't fit any requirements for listing in the "imperiled species" category.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the species from the federal endangered list in 1999, showing that conservation efforts have been highly successful. And that's great news.
Paddlers will want to know as well that the Apalachicola Paddling Trail System in Franklin County is one of 24 trails now designated as a National Recreation Trail. The trails were developed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) just made the announcement. The trails encompass abouty 100 miles of scenic waterways, with some as short as two miles and others up to 16. This allows for paddles for a few hours or days, based on time and experience.
You can get a free copy of the Apalachicola Paddling Trail System map by calling 850-488-5520 or go to MyFWC.com and click on “Outdoor Recreation.” |
