Skidaddle With A Paddle
March 18, 2008
So I'm paddling down the Econfina River north of Perry, Florida, and the kayak turns over. I sunk like a sack of silver dollars, resurfaced with a gasp and rejoined the kayak. My friend looked back at me with no expression of surprise, since this represented about the 433rd time I'd capsized since we launched an hour before.

Landing in the drink also might sound alarming were it not for the fact I was in less than four feet of water. Even so, trying to get back into the craft and carry on became more than troublesome, given the fact I outweighed the kayak by about 100 pounds. All right, more like 150 pounds, but what's the harm of another piece of carrot cake?

Fortunately for my future kayaking partners, soon enough I could get the hang of paddling well enough to stay dry for long periods of time -- I still break the surface now and then.

While I avoid open water when it's windy and wavy (and who doesn't?), moving about like a water bug in a protected creek, river or lake sure can be fun and stress-busting. And let's face it, when one does fall it's only a blue splash, not a red one!

Just about every body of water in Florida not only permits paddling but most encourage it. All it takes is a bit of planning -- such as being dropped off upstream and getting picked up downstream -- and bringing a few conveniences. The actual paddling can be as slow and tranquil or as rapid and wild as you like.

Paddlers, either new or veteran, should know about a new event taking place March 20-27. Called "Paddle Florida," it's the inaugural paddle down the famed Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, a 123-mile, seven-day paddle that starts from the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park and ends at Manatee Springs State Park. You'll see 300 paddlers doing their thing an average of 18 miles per day, with overnight respites along the riverbanks. Go to paddleflorida.org for more info.

Another handy resource available in May for Suwannee River enthusiasts: the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail Paddling Guide. It's $19.95 plus tax, shipping and handling, and contains 108 pages of maps, public areas, boat ramps, where to get supplies, lodging and other info. Of course it's laminated so you can take it along in the kayak or canoe. You can learn more details and how to order at www.NaturalNorthFlorida.com.
