Famous Mermaids
February 22, 2008
Weeki Wachee Springs, the famed mermaid attraction that opened in 1947, just hung the "Back in Bizness" sign on the door.

Located on U.S. Highway 19 northeast of Tampa, the mermaids swam in formations, stayed underwater thanks to breathing stations for 45-minute shows eight times a day, and drew lots of publicity nationwide. Over the years, visitors to the 500-seat theater included Esther Williams, Arthur Godfrey and Elvis Presley. It's been refurbished entirely and ready to create another, er, splash. Check it out for a truly enjoyable day: www.weekiwachee.com.
