What a wonderful way to spend a Monday!
My wife Amanda and I recently bought a couple of little 8-foot kayaks to throw in the back of our pickup, so we spent the day tooling around Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs. These boats are perfect for an afternoon trip when winds are light and the trip distance is pretty short. Since the kayaks are so short, they definitely do not track as well in the water compared to larger boats, but they were manageable. I like to think of them as "lounge chairs that you can paddle!"
Making our way from Hunter Spring Park in Crystal River, we paddled the short distance to Three Sisters Springs, and for a good while we were the only ones there! We spent a good while splashing around in the crystal-clear water and then returned to our "lounge chairs that you can paddle" and lazily drifted around the springs. So relaxing.
What's that? You've never been to Three Sisters Springs? Well, you must make plans this summer to visit beautiful Citrus County and spend some time out on the water. If you don't have a kayak, there's no need to worry. Citrus County has a huge amount of kayak shops offering rentals, accessories and group tours. Another great spot to check out is Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, where you can see red wolves, manatees and a Florida panther! Next door to the park is Citrus County's Visitors and Convention Bureau office, so make sure to stop in and grab some information on other cool things to do in the area.
I've got some video from an earlier trip to Three Sisters Springs. I'm sure it will provide the necessary motivation to load up your paddling gear and head to Citrus County to check it out for yourself. Here's the link: http://vimeo.com/1308753
Until next time, have a blast exploring the natural side of Florida!
