Deals in Fort Lauderdale for a Getaway with a Friend?
Asked by Linda on June 08, 2010
Q: Would like to know of a luxury short getaway (a day or two)to celebrate my single friends birthday in the Ft. Lauderdale area. A great deal or special would be an added benefit. The time line is later part of June. Thanks so much.
A:

Hello Linda,

A Fort Lauderdale getaway with a good friend sounds like a perfect idea. Sun, sand, beautiful beaches, great shopping and everything from fine dining to kick-back beach bars...you two are going to have a blast!

The first place I think you should look for deals and specials is the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitor Bureau's website, which has some invaluable information about deals in Fort Lauderdale right now (they call them "Lauderdeals," and they're good on everything from hotels to attractions). If you happen to be a Florida resident, click here for special deals.

Among the deals being offered for June stays (and beyond) are a third night free when you stay two nights at the oceanfront Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, and rates from $345 per night at the oceanfront Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale (my personal favorite) through June 30 that include breakfast for two and transport from the airport.

The Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina is another really beautiful hotel I can personally vouch for (stayed there a few weeks ago--it's not on the beach but there's a fab pool, and the water taxi is right out the door). There are some some good specials going on her now, too, including 25 percent off stays booked by July 15.

A tip: if you and your friend plan on hitting the town, the Water Taxi is a very pracitcal and totally fun way to get around. Tickets are discounted by nearly half if you plan to ride only after 7PM. From all of the hotels I've recommended, a Water Taxi pick up point is just a short stroll away and will deliver the two of you to places like Las Olas Blvd.  (the main drag for shopping and dining, a beautiful European-style pedestrian zone) while giving you a scenic tour of Fort Lauderdale's beautiful canals and jaw-dropping mansions at the same time.

Wishing you a really fun escape to Fort Lauderdale!

Military Discounts for UK Troops, too?
Asked by Alan Brockie on June 07, 2010
Q: Hi, I know the US looks after its troops with free/reduced cost tickets etc for attractions in Florida, but are there any associated programmes for coalition troops? I am a UK sailor coming to Florida next year for recuperation after some time in Afghanistan. Thanks.
A:

Hello Alan,

I have great news! I got in touch with one of my very favorite hotels (top three for sure!) in the Florida Keys, Hawks Cay Resort, as I've long heard about their special miltary discounts for US troops. I asked about the possibility of extending the deal to UK troops, and was met with this response:

"UK or USA, he’s a hero in my book!"

I think that's a refrain you're likely to hear at many Florida resorts and attractions when you call to ask about military discounts, even if programs may not state that outright. But why not take a look at the Hawks Cay Heroes promotion and learn more about the resort to see if it looks right for you.

I visited a few months back when we were filming my Insider video about laid-back luxury in the Florida Keys, and you can watch the video footage to see shots from Hawks Cay Resort (I even got to swim with a dolphin there!). And if it's rest and relaxation you're coming to Florida for, I can assure you this is a very tranquil setting (on the island of Duck Key) with a beautiful private beach, multiple pools and spacious rooms. There are even villas with kitchens if you'd like more of an apartment-feel during your stay. And if you're the type that likes to take part in activities during your holiday, too, there's world-class fishing, scuba diving and so much more to love in this part of Florida.

I'd like to thank you for your service. You're a hero in my book, too. And I hope you'll have a very relaxing and rewarding time during your recuperation in Florida.

Let me know where you end up! And get in touch closer to your arrival, too, as I'd love to help you out with more planning.

Kind regards,

Terry

There are many, many luxury hotels in Florida and I'd love to share some of my favorites with you.

Searching For a Good South Florida Beach Town to Visit With Mom
Asked by Patricia Espinoz on April 20, 2010
Q: hi, last january i went to naples florida, we stayed at the edgwater hotel in a two bedroom apart. with the beach just outside the door to the living room, the town was beautiful with good restaurants and small and cute. we would love to go to another town in south florida with a little more to do than naples, a beautifull beach and hotel on the beach like edgwater and near miami like 1 or 2 ours from miami, because my mom is in miami to visit the doctors so more travel would be hard for her and she does not like airplanes. can you help me?
A:

Hello Patricia,

The Edgewater Beach Hotel is a nice spot, isn't it! I really love the apartment-style layout of the suites there and easy beach access. Naples has an ideal combination of upscale shopping and dining and laid-back beach life. And when i read your request for somewhere new to visit this year, Delray Beach is the first place that jumped to mind. It's about an hour's drive north from Miami.

Delray is that quintessential Florida beach town with a great main boulevard (Atlantic Avenue) that bustles with cafes and shops, and a really lovely public beach backed with seagrapes and with a wide swath of sand. Unlike where you stayed in Naples, however, the hotels here are right across A1A from the beach itself (the two-lane road is not very busy and there are plenty of cross walks), leaving the beach and dunes in a very natural state.

My favorite place to stay here is the new Seagate Hotel & Spa, which is a block from the beach. It's an absolutely beautiful property with excellent dining (Atlantic Grille has live piano music Thu.-Sat. and delicious seafood and steaks) and a few fun resort wear and gift shops within the building. Guests here also get access to an oceanfront private beach club (a few blocks away, there's a complimentary resort shuttle to take you) where you and your mother can spend your afternoons. There's a pool at the resort and at the beach club, too. Request a room with one of the large balconies overlooking the courtyard pool area.

If you want to be right across from the beach, consider the Delray Beach Marriott, another fine property with balconies that will give you ocean views.

Wishing you a really nice time with your mother in Miami and Delray Beach!

Adjoining Rooms in Jensen Beach and the Keys?
Asked by Deb on March 25, 2010
Q: Heading to Jensen Beach Apr 2 - 5 need accomodations for 2 adjoining rms. have 2 teenage girls. 3 nites, beach front pref. Keys Apr 5 - 8 same accomodations? Sites, entertainment, eateries however on a budget. Death in fam. prompted trip & so we are extending the time to enjoy. Last minute and not too expensive.
A:

Hello Deb,

Mixing Jensen Beach and the Florida Keys sounds like a really fun itinerary. In Jensen Beach, your best bet for a luxury oceanfront property with adjoining rooms is going to be the Courtyard Hutchinson Island Oceanside. Adjoining rooms are available here on both the Atlantic and Intracoastal sides of the hotel, and most of the configurations give you one room with a king size bed attached to another room with two double beds (with two full bathrooms total--so you get your own and the girls do, too!).

In the Florida Keys, the Key Largo Grande Resort & Beach Club is a beautiful Hilton property on the water with the option of adjoining rooms, too.

As for family activities on a budget, I suggest you get in touch with VISIT FLORIDA's Family Insider, Jill Martin--her site is full of ideas for good family fun that won't break the bank. Also have a look at Jill's recently filmed video about exploring the Florida Everglades from Key Largo with her two boys.

I am  sorry to hear that your reaons for coming to Florida are sad, but I hope you will have a good trip.

All-Inclusive Beach Resorts for a Florida Honeymoon
Asked by jeri on March 22, 2010
Q: are there any all inclusive resorts in flordia? i am looking to have my honeymoon on the beach
A:

Hello Jeri,

A Florida honeymoon on the beach...sounds wonderful. And while all-inclusive resorts are not very commonplace in Florida, there is one very special place that comes to mind for your all-inclusive beach honeymoon.

Little Palm Island Resort & Spa, on a private island in the Florida Keys, is a paradise-perfect place where the two of you will stay in technology-free, luxurious thatched huts (read: no wifi and TV to distract from the romance) and be steps from one of the most beautiful--and utterly private--beaches in the Florida Keys. Browse the resort's all-inclusive package online or consider calling and putting together a customized package to meet your personal entertainment and dining needs. I visited Little Palm Island Resort & Spa in 2009, and I can tell you that three meals a day here for several days in a row amounts to a whole lot of eating (and I love my gourmet food just as much as the next person!). Looking back, I think two meals per day--breakfast and dinner, or lunch and dinner--would have suited me just fine. These meals are multi-course affairs in an elegant oceanfront restaurant, and they are very lavish affairs...I promise you won't go hungry!

In Norrth Florida, consider the oceanfront Amelia Island Plantation (a short drive from Jacksonville), which also offers all-inclusive packages that include breakfast, lunch and dinner at your choice of nine resort restaurants as well as unlimited resort recreation (bike rentals, tennis court times and more!).

Wishing you a beautiful Florida honeymoon!

Irish Couple Planning First Trip to Florida
Asked by orla harney on March 21, 2010
Q: Hey Terry, My boyfriend and i are planning on travelling to florida in july or August from Ireland. It's our first visit to the US and want to see and do as much as possible but yet have a relaxing 2 week holiday. could you recommend which area will be relaxing and allow us to experience all florida and the US has to offer. We do not plan on renting a car so taxis and walking will be our main mode of transport. I look forward to hearing from you. Orla Harney
A:

Hello Orla,

I'm so happy to hear you're making your first visit  to the U.S., and it's just perfect that Florida is your first destination!

Our state has so many diverse attractions to offer, and since you're looking to see and do as much as possible during the two weeks you're here (without the need for a car rental), I would recommend basing yourselves in South Florida, where there's plenty of public transport and attractions are generally close together.

The Miami area has practically endless options when it comes to luxury hotels. And when you base yourself at the beach, it's easy enough to get around to places like Key Biscayne (where you'll find a state park with one of the state's prettiest beaches) and the downtown Design District (with amazing shops and restaurants) by taxi.

Taking a taxi north from Miami to Fort Lauderdale won't be inexpensive, but you can also plan to come to this lovely seaside town to spend some time at one of the great luxury oceanfront hotels. And Fort Lauderdale also offers a water taxi system to make getting around not only easy but a pleasure!

Since two weeks gives you plenty of time to see some different things, you can also consider flying from Fort Lauderdale or Miami to Key West. You can keep yourselves busy in this artistic, Caribbean-influenced town for several days, for sure. And again, there are some wonderful luxury experiences that await--from hotels like the Hyatt Key West to sunset cruises and private jet ski tours. Another great thing about Key West is that you won't miss a car, since the town is very, very walkable (you can also plan to rent bikes to get around).

Let me know where you end up! And have a great first time visit to the US and Florida! Thank you for getting in touch.

Coming to Panama City Beach
Asked by Haszel on March 21, 2010
Q: Whats the best place to stay in pamama city beach florida thats on the beach. Any ideas for all inclusvie resorts also?
A:

Hello Hazel,

There are a few gulf front hotels to recommend in Panama City Beach, as well as some condominium-style properties, which tend to offer different scales of luxury amenties since many are owner-operated. Have a look at the following suggestions to help with your trip planning:

Legacy by the Sea

Aqua Condos

Sterling Beach Resort Condos

Edgewater Beach & Golf Resort

And while it's not oceanfront, the Marriott Bay Point resort is another prime property to consider.

As far as all-inclusive resorts, I am afraid that none of these properties offer that option. When you call to make your booking, however, you can certainly check if breakfast and other meals can be included in the pricing.

Have a wonderful vacation!

Military Man ISO Romantic Florida Destination for Getaway With His Wife
Asked by Jason on March 15, 2010
Q: I am currently deployed to Iraq and upon my return my wife and I would like to spend a romatic spell in Florida. Looking at the 1st of May. both of us would like the ability to walk the beaches. I would like to fly to an airport and not have to rent a car, but rather taxi to our hotel and be able to walk to our daily destinations. Please help
A:

Hello Jason,

Thank you for getting in touch. And thank you, very much, for your service to our country. I am happy to hear that a Florida vacation is on your radar following your return from Iraq.

Being able to walk to beaches and restaurants from a hotel is really important to me, too, when I go on vacation. And a few places popped to mind when I read your inquiry.

Atlantic Beach, one of the Jacksonville beaches, would be a really ideal place for you and your wife to vacation. You can stay here at the beautiful and relatively new One Ocean Resort, open since 2007. The hotel has contemporary decor and rooms with balconies fronting the beach. There's a spa and wonderful restaurant on site, but you're just a one-minute stroll to some unique restaurants, cute boutique-style shops and wine bars in Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach, too. The taxi ride from the Jackonsville International Airport to the hotel will take about 30 minutes, and you won't need a car to entertain yourselves for the rest of your visit.

Another fun place to consider for your getaway is Fort Lauderdale, where I'd recommend staying at either the Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale or the very contemporary W Fort Lauderdale. Both hotels are oceanfront, with amazing pools and beach access just across A1A. I've stayed at both properties and can recommend either one very highly (I'd give the Ritz-Carlton the nod for being more romantic, and the W for being more stylish). You're also a short stroll from oceanfront dining and nightlife here. I recently took a taxi from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to the W Fort Lauderdale and it cost $23, including tip, and took about 15 minutes. Couldn't be easier.

You could also consider flying into Palm Beach International Airport and staying at The Breakers Palm Beach. It's one of favorite resorts, and definitely ideal for a romantic getaway. The Breakers offers free shuttle service to nearby restaurants, so you won't need a car, but it's a short walk, too (better yet, rent beach cruisers from the hotel to explore the island!). From the airport to the resort by taxi, you're looking at about 20 minutes.

Have a look at those suggestions and let me know what you think. And be sure to ask for a military discount, too.

Daytona Beach Luxury Hotel Suggestion?
Asked by Kerry on March 04, 2010
Q: What hotel do you recomend for Daytona Beach? I want a hotel right on the beach and classy.
A:

Hi Kerry,

Your best bet in Daytona Beach is going to be The Shores Resort & Spa. It's the area's only AAA Four Diamond property, is right on the oceanfront, has a spa and fine dining restaurant and is absolutely beautiful (i got the chance to pop in last year to see for myself). I just visited the hotel's website and saw they're running a special rate, with rooms from $109 per night. But I say splurge on a oceanfront room--it's well worth it!

Enjoy Daytona!

Destin Wedding Ideas?
Asked by Josh Click on March 03, 2010
Q: Can you recommend any places to have a wedding at, in Destin?
A:

Hello Josh,

Destin is a really popular wedding destination--I'm thriled to hear you're considering the area! The beautiful sugar sand beaches will be an unforgettable backdrop from your event. Here are some suggestions I have when it comes to where to hold your weddng festivities:

The Emerald Grande resort hosts many weddings. You can stage your event on the Captain's Deck, overlooking the bay and gulf, or in the Commanders Palace restaurant, which has equally amazing views.

The Palms of Destin Resort is a luxury condo resort with lots of ballroom space for a lavish reception. You can choose to get married on the beach, too, at Henderson Beach State Park, just across the street.

Marina Cafe is a classy restaurant setting to consider for your wedding (they do a lot of them!), also with beautiful watery views.

And also consider the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort in nearby Fort Walton Beach, a mid-range hotel that can put on an absolute five-star event. The lush courtyard gardens here are perfect for a small wedding, or you can get married on the beach. The hotel's banquet space overlooks the bay and golf.

For more information on Destin wedding planning, get in touch with the Emerald Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau--they can mail you a wedding planning guide with more information on the area's most scenic wedding locales, and even put together requests for proposals to area venues.

Wishing you a beautiful Destin wedding!

Kind regards,

Pairing a Disney Vacation with a Beach/Surfing Escape
Asked by Mary Ann Hammerle on February 24, 2010
Q: I am traveling with my husband, 2 kids and their 2 friends (kids ages 15-18) We are spending 6 night in Disney and want to spend 3 nights at a beach resort. We want to take a surfing lesson. We are looking for a beach not too far from Orlando (2 hrs or less), lively fun with shops and restaurants and sight seeing. Not looking for a sirene isolated peaceful beach. Where do you reccommend we go? My husband want s a NICE hotel too!
A: Hello Mary Ann,

Your plan for a Disney vacation mixed with a beach escape sounds like a perfect Central Florida vacation itinerary. Both the east and west coasts of Florida are just a short drive from Orlando. But  since surfing lessons are on your list of things to do, I recommend you plan your beach time on the the east coast to search for fun in the waves (the west coast waves are usually very placid--something like a lake effect!--this time of year.

Cocoa Beach is most definitely where you should head for surfing lessons with the gang. Kelly Slater--the most famous surfer in the world and a world champion many times over--actually hails from this town (where your kids and their friends will certainly be thrilled to find the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop).

And the best surf school in town? That would be the Ron Jon Surf School, too--Florida's largest surf school, with group and individual lessons offered seven days a week. My fellow Insider, Lauren Tjaden, has a great video you can watch from her own trip to Cocoa Beach to improve her surfing techique. She's loads of fun, be sure to check it out.

And since you mentioned a serene isolated beach is NOT what you're looking for, I also think Cocoa Beach a good choice. This part of Florida's coastline has more of an urban feel, with lots of shops and restaurants and a pier, too, right there in downtown Cocoa Beach. The beaches here are beautiful, but by no means isolated. The only issue you might encounter is there is not too much in the way of truly high-end accommodation in the Cocoa Beach area to appease your luxury-loving husband.

That said, one place I can definitely recommend is the Radisson Suite Hotel Oceanfront in Melbourne, a short drive south of Cocoa. Don't let the plain exterior dissuade you. I stayed here last year with my family and loved it. The rooms are in fact all suites, complete with a living area, balcony and small kitchenette. The furniture is all new and contemporary, and I loved the tiled floors throughout. The feel is more of a condo than a hotel, it'll be nice for you and your group to have room to spread out. And the beach is just out the door, as well as a nice pool.

If having a very luxurious hotel is the most important factor for your entourage, you could also consider checking in at the lovely Vero Beach Hotel & Spa, a little over an hour south of Cocoa Beach in Vero Beach--an upscale beach community known for its burgeoning gallery scene and barefoot luxury vibe.

Let me know where you end up! And good luck with the surfing--be sure to check out some great tips on perfecting your prowess with the sport, here.

Kind regards,

Terry

Looking For a New Florida Experience
Asked by Adeline on February 15, 2010
Q: Hi Terry,My husband and I are looking for a luxury beach vacation to relax with great food and good service. We've both visited Fl many times mostly Daytona, Orlando, the keys and West Palm. We'd prefer to stay away from these areas and discover another part of FL. Maybe the north west coast. Any suggestions?
A: Hi Adeline,

Thanks for writing. I'm glad to hear you've visited many parts of our state already! I suggest you consider the Tampa area for your next trip, for something new, and put the Sandpearl Resort, oceanfront in Clearwater Beach, at the top of your list. My sister and I visited the hotel last year, and I was so impressed. It's only been open since 2007, and is very contemporary and classy, with a beautiful beachscape and pool area, a casual sunset bar and a fine dining restaurant, Caretta on the Gulf, with fabulous seafood. The service is absolutely first-class all around, you won't be disappointed. Daytrips in the area will keep you busy, too. You can visit Winter the dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and nearby St. Petersburg, home to the Salvador Dali Museum,  too (be sure to stop for the greatest Italian coffee at Mazzaro's Market, a real local institution with an incredible selection of gourmet edibles).

Wishing you a terrific trip!

Florida Resident Notaries Can Perform Florida Weddings
Asked by Harold Beauchamp on February 11, 2010
Q: In your answer to Bonnie re her daughter getting married in Florida you said that notaries are not considered valid wedding officiants. Wrong. Notaries can perform marriages in Florida as long as the notary is a resident of Florida. Check the website http://notaries.dos.state.fl.us/notary.htmlfor the verification. FYI South Carolina & Massachusetts are the other 2 states in which notaries can perform marriages.
A: Hi Harold, Thank you very much for this correction! It seems I was misinformed. As long as the notary is a resident of Florida, they can perform weddings. I appreciating you writing to set the record straight, and I apologize for the oversight. Kind regards, Terry
Question about my Daughter's Florida Wedding
Asked by Bonnie Pate on February 10, 2010
Q: My daughter is planning her wedding for spring in Florida. Is there any problem with having an out of state preacher do the wedding in the state of Florida thanks
A: Hi Bonnie,

Fabulous that your daugther will be marrying in Florida! As long as the out-of-state preacher is an ordained minister, that person may legally perform a wedding in Florida (be aware that notaries, justices of the peace and judges, etc., are not considered valid wedding officiants).

VISIT FLORIDA's wedding page has lots of useful information you might want to have a look at, too.

Wishing you all a wonderful time in Florida for the wedding!

Seeking Advice for a Florida Vacation with Diving, Kids, Dining, more
Asked by Holly on February 08, 2010
Q: I have looked at Sanibel Harbour Marriott which ticks most of our boxes. I have seen the WaterColor resort - which looks great, but the pool seems small and the reviews i have read say the resort is a bit tired now.Our boys are fishes so pools/beach are very important.I defiantly would like a condo etc in a resort to be able to use their facilities - sunloungers and umbrellas are a must with the children. The east islands look lovely - pretty beaches - is the sea going to warm enough in March/April?I'm not sure they seem a bit cut off - we would like to be go out in a short drive have a nice town or harbor to strole around with good shops and restaurants. My husband would love to do some diving while we are there -but east or west coast? What is Napels and Fort Myers areas like? Many thanksHolly
A: Hello Holly,

Sanibel Harbor Marriott Resort & Spa
and WaterColor Inn & Resort are both lovely properties. I am sorry you've read some disheartening reviews about the latter, but I can assure you it's a lovely property -- one of the finest in the state and my favorite in Northwest Florida. And at either of these properties your boys will have plenty of opportunity to swim in both the pool and ocean, as the waves on Florida's Gulf Coast are usually very calm. You can count on umbrellas and lounge chairs to be on hand, too.

The ocean will still be a bit cool in March and April, in the lower 70s and perhaps even a bit chillier in the northern reaches of the state. But the air temperature should be nice and warm, and depending on where you're coming from (looks like the UK!), you might find the water downright balmy in our part of the world.

For scuba diving, boat trips off Florida's east coast around West Palm Beach and Jupiter and south in the islands of the Florida Keys offer the most interesting underwater experience, with wrecks and reefs galore.

You said you like to be able to stroll around to shops and restaurants, and Naples is a place that definitely accommodates that, with luxury boutiques, elegant restaurants and casual cafes, a beautiful oceanfront pier and promenade the kids will love and more.

Once you've decided on which part of Florida to visit, feel free to get in touch again for more advice.

Have a great time!

Terry
Looking for a Vacation Rental in Orlando or Southwest Florida
Asked by Robert Seymour on February 04, 2010
Q: Looking for a rental,Condo or House.4 Adults, 3 Children under 12 Preferably Orlando or SW-Coast, Sarasota, Naples Dates:27 March - 10 April 2010Kind regards, R. Seymour
A: Hello Robert,

Renting a house or condo sounds like a good way to have enough space for your large group. And I recently learned about a website called Rentalo that's great for sourcing everything from luxury villas and conds available for rent by the week to apartments on golf courses and urban escapes in apartment buildings. I did a quick search on the site, and Florida cities are well represented, including Orlando, Sarasota and Naples. You just type in your destination and the search system responds with a bunch of properties for you to consider. There are good photos, too. I also advise you make a phone call or email with specific questions to make sure a property that interests you will truly fit your needs.

The Orlando Villas website is another place to look, with offerings in Orlando as well as Fort Myers and Bradenton, near Sarasota.

And also take a look at HomeAway, which offers a wide range of luxury Florida rentals.

Have a look at those sites and you'll see there are many options. Enjoy your Florida family vacation! And email me back if you need any more advice.

Kind regards,

Terry

British Family Visiting in March
Asked by Holly on February 04, 2010
Q: Hi - we are from England and are taking our first 2 week holiday to florida in March. We have 3 boys (7yrs, 4 yrs, 4 months) and have booked 1 week at Animal Kingdom. We then want to spend 1 week on the beach. East or West coast? We would like a very nice/apartment on the beach or a maybe a very nice hotel, but would like self catering. Can you offer any advice.
A: Hello Holly,

Glad to hear you're crossing the pond to visit us in Florida. March should be a beautiful time to visit! And your plans to mix time at the Orlando theme parks with time on the coast sounds like an ideal itinerary for a first-time visit.

Orlando is well located for hopping over to the east coast or Gulf Coast beaches. When deciding which fits your family best, consider whether you prefer wide beaches with the potential for waves, in which case you should opt for the east coast beaches around Cocoa Beach, Melbourne and Vero Beach.

Florida's white-sand Gulf Coast beaches have very calm water and virtually no waves this time of year, which might be more appealing since you have young children.

For self-catering, your best bet is really going to be renting an apartment or staying at a hotel with more of a residence feel so you have access to a kitchen. In the latter category on the Gulf Coast, I recommend you look into the Hyatt Siesta Key Beach. This is a Hyatt Residence Club property, so it offers fully furnished oceanfront apartments with two or three bedrooms and luxurious kitchens with gourmet appliances and stainless steel throughout. The look of these apartments is very polished and contemporary, with modern appointments, and the beach at Siesta Key is one of the finest in Florida.

On Anna Maria Island on the Gulf Coast, Pineapple Fish is a wonderful British-owned company offering stunning villas for rent, some of which are right on the beach. The website has great photos of the various properties to give you a feel for each.

Have a look at those suggestions and let me know what you think. And when you decide which coast you'd like to stay on, I can help narrow down your search more.

Thank you for getting in touch!

Planning a Vacation on St. George Island
Asked by Justin Brown on January 31, 2010
Q: Thanks for all the info on Florida islands, after much thought and research we are looking at St. George Island. What are your thoughts, issues, feedback on this area. We are traveling on a budget this year so have to hold back spending which lead us to this island. Look fowarad to hearing from you.
A: Dear Justin,

Nice to hear from you again. And I think you're really going to love St. George Island. That's great you've decided on such a unique Florida spot! Northwest Florida is home to some of our state's most beautiful -- and often, most blissfully empty! -- beaches. I love this part of the state. And St. George Island is a real gem (I actually grew up vacationing not too far from there, on Dog Island).

As you've probably found out, sprawling resorts are not the thing on St. George Island. The island is more about vacation rentals, of which there are many beautiful luxury properties. So I advise you get in touch with a rental agency to explore renting a vacation home here during your stay. Planning your visit for the summer months will get you better rates, and staying in a rental home means you'll have a fully equipped kitchen to cook meals in, too, which helps cut costs.

Be sure to try some of the local Apalachicola oysters from this part of the state if you like seafood (divine!), too.

And do follow up to tell me how your vacation plans unfold, if you think of it! I would love to hear.

Kind regards,

Terry
Mother/Daughter Trip to Jacksonville/St. Augustine Area
Asked by Donna on January 28, 2010
Q: I'm looking for oceanfront or bayfront hotel around JAX, St. Augustine. I have narrowed search to Courtyard Marriott in JaxB... or Hampton Inn in St. A Beach. Date of travel from the frigid North is Feb 11-19, with my 80 yr old mother. Just looking to relax, and warm up!. Any suggestions?Thank-you.
A: Dear Donna,

Good plan! Escaping from the frigid north. Well, you've picked the right place. And while North Florida won't be quite as warm as South Florida this time of the year, I am sure you'll find it downright toasty compared to where you've come from!

Sounds like you've zeroed in on St. Augustine Beach or Jacksonville Beach as your destination. When it comes to deciding between the two properties you mentioned in those towns, I suggest you consider whether you want to be around historic sightseeing options (in which case, choose St. Augustine Beach) or whether you'd prefer a more urban beach environment, which you'll find in Jacksonville Beach.

I'd also like to suggest that you consider Ponte Vedra Beach, a quieter enclave located right between Jacksonville Beach and St. Augustine, that has a lovely and historic oceanfront hotel in the form of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club.

And just north of Jacksonville Beach is the community of Atlantic Beach, one of my favorite Florida beach towns. You and your mother could consider staying here at the relatively new oceanfront property One Ocean Hotel Resort & Spa. Besides the beautiful and quiet beaches, a great benefit to staying here is that you'll be a short walk from restaurants and shops, so you won't even need a car to get out and about during your stay.

Have a wonderful trip with your mother!

Terry

Is April 2 a Public Holiday?
Asked by Andrzej on January 26, 2010
Q: Is APRIL 02, 2010, a public holiday in Florida?
A: Hello Andrzej,

No, April 2 is not a public holiday in Florida. I did read that this day, called Pascua Day, marks the anniversary of the 1513 discovery of Florida by Ponce de Leon. But there are no official closures to celebrate this day -- everything from banks and theme parks to hotels and restaurants will be operating as usual! Hope that helps...

Advice on Florida's Islands
Asked by Justin Brown on January 21, 2010
Q: Hello,My wife and I are trying to find an island off of Florida to vacation at this summer that would be remote. We have been to Captiva and loved it. Any more suggestions on where to go?
A: Hello Justin,

Thank you for getting in touch. I absolutely love a good island vacation, too. And one of the best things about the various islands off Florida is that they often maintain a feeling of being remote, while remaining easy enough to access by car or a short boat ride at the same time!

You mentioned you loved Captiva Island, so I am sure neighboring Sanibel Island is on your radar, too.

Also on Florida's gulf coast are lovely Siesta Key, a favorite of Dr. Beach for its white sand beaches, and Anna Maria Island.

And for a taste of the old Florida in beautiful natural surrounds, add Gasparilla Island and the historic Gasparilla Inn & Club to your list of considerations.

Palm Island, accessible by boat only, is absolutely stunning.

In North Florida, Amelia Island is one of my favorite off-the-beaten-path Florida destinations, with fabulous luxury lodging options including the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island.

And of course there's our most famous string of islands, the Florida Keys, where you can head for bustling Key West, retreat to LIttle Palm Island Resort & Spa on its own private isle off Little Torch Key, or stay in a hideway retreat on islands such as Islamorada and Key Largo.

When you end up picking your destination, feel free to get back in touch with me for ideas on where to stay and dine. Have a wonderful time!

Where to Honeymoon After a Longboat Key Wedding
Asked by Barbara on January 14, 2010
Q: Please help, we are getting married in Longboat Key, have a 2nd home in Hudson FL and are looking for an upscale resort to stay for our honeymoon - no kids. We also want to go sport fishing for shark or other large fish we are used to Salmon fishing in Lake MI back home and are not interested in mahi mahi fishing. Please help!
A: Dear Barbara,

Thank you for getting in touch. For the fishing advice, I suggest you contact my fellow VISIT FLORIDA Insider, Terry Tomalin--his specialty is Boating and Fishing, and he'll be able to to tell you about sport fishing and our big game in Florida.

Now on to my area of expertise--where to stay for your honeymoon. You mentioned you're getting married in Longboat Key (wonderful choice), and since you didn't mention one way or the other, I'll assume you're looking to honeymoon in the area, too.

Since there's only one resort in Florida that's officially for adults only (Little Palm Island Resort & Spa, the legendary private island property in the Florida Keys), I don't have any guaranteed kid-free resorts to suggest to you in the vicinity of Longboat Key.

If you want to ensure the peace and quite of a kid-free honeymoon, however, I've got an idea. Have you considered renting a luxury villa, just for the two of you? Close to Longboat Key, on lovely Anna Maria Island, there are beautiful waterfront homes for rent through Pineapple Fish, which offers six gorgeous villas that are ideal for a private, upscale honeymoon. Anna Maria Island has a good dining scene, spa options and lots of outdoor activities on offer, so you won't get bored.

You could also consider heading north to Clearwater Beach and the sophisticated oceanfront Sandpearl Resort. Families are welcome here, too, but the Sandpearl definitely has more of a refined, boutique feel than mass resorts that specifically target family travel.

Wishing you an amazing Florida wedding and honeymoon!

Kind regards,

Terry

March Getaway: Where Does History Meet the Great Outdoors?
Asked by cathy on January 08, 2010
Q: My husband and I are planning a trip the first week of March. We have never been to Florida. We love outdoors and history but have no idea where to go in Florida. We like to take walks on the beach but aren't people to stay on the beach all day. Any suggestions?
A: Hello Kathy,

The first week in March should be a beautiful time to be in Florida! So glad you're visiting us. And it sounds like you've got a good idea about what you'd like to do while you're here. I think I've got just the place.

You mentioned you like the outdoors and are interested in history, which instantly made me think of St. Augustine. Spend your time exploring the historic town and old Portuguese fort, the Castillo de San Marcos, then head over to nearby Anastasia State Park for an outdoorsy fix of empty beaches, hiking and kayaking trails in pristine North Florida parkland (you can do some great birdwatching here in early spring!).

Since you said you're not one to lounge on the beach all day, you might like staying in the historic district of St. Augustine instead of at the beach, in which case I recommend a beautiful luxury property, the Casa Monica Hotel. From here, you can easily walk to great shopping and dining (as well as to the fort and other historic sites). And for a special night out and fine dining with a quirky twist, it's well worth hopping in the car for the short drive to  Gypsy Cab Company for dinner.

Enjoy your visit! And let me know what you think of St. Augustine! I'd love to hear.

Looking for an Adults-Only Florida Beach Resort
Asked by Kassandra on January 06, 2010
Q: Are there any all-inclusive, adult only, resorts on a beach in FL? Or just adults only? It doesn't need to be all wild and crazy, or strictly for seniors, just no kids, where I can have a few drinks, and laugh & play on a beach. I'm 45. Thanks!
A: Hello Kassandra,

Thanks for your query about adults-only resorts in Florida. This is a question that comes up fairly often. Not long ago, I blogged about Little Palm Island Resort & Spa being lauded among the world's very best adults-only resorts (guests 16 and under are not allowed, making for plenty of peace on this beautiful island escape in the Keys).

Here's an excerpt from my past answer to this same question from a reader:

The only property that fits the bill, where kids are actually not allowed, is Little Palm Island Resort & Spa in the Florida Keys--a magnificent property that happens to be ranked among the best adults-only resorts in the world. If you want complete peace in a guaranteed kid-free environment, this is the place. Romantic dinners and swimming on near-empty beaches and lagoons guaranteed.

And while the following hotels do not have an adults-only policy, I  recommend them for romantic couple escapes. They're all beachfront, too:

If you have a specific region of Florida in mind for your vacation, feel free to write me back and I'll respond with more specific suggestions from that area!

Day Tripping from Key West
Asked by Connie on January 04, 2010
Q: My husband and I are going to Key West the second week in March. We have a timeshare there; we do not snorkel or fish; we are looking for ideas on day trips (e.g. St. Augustine).
A: Dear Connie,

I'm glad to hear you're heading down to Key West, one of my favorite places! If you're looking for day trips, I'm afraid the lovely historic city of St. Augustine in North Florida won't be a possibility (it would take you nearly nine hours to drive there from Key West, one way!). Miami is the closest city for day trips, and it is still over three and a half hours drive time from Key West.

For day trips, you're better off spending your time in Key West itself or close by on some of the other islands in the Lower Keys.

You mentioned you don't snorkel or fish. But as long as you're happy to get out on the water anyway, I suggest taking a jet ski tour around Key West and the small surrounding islands. I got the chance to do this back in November, and was surprised by just how much fun it is! I went with Barefoot Billy's, and was really impressed by the guide's knowledge of local history and island lore. Plus, from the water you get a whole new vantage point on Key West and get to cruise through some of the more beautiful mangrove islands nearby, too. Tour rates are $130 for a single jetski, and $150 if you and your husband share one.

Another great day trip would be arranging brunch, lunch or dinner on Little Palm Island--the most exclusive resort in the Florida Keys, located on its own private island just a ten-minute boat ride off Little Torch Key. The resort's captain will pick you up in a vintage boat at the private marina. Then arrive on the island in time for sunset before settling down with your toes in the sand for a beautiful dinner of Florida seafood. It will be a meal to remember, for sure!

Another fun day trip option would be to sail over to the Dry Tortugas, about 70 miles from Key West, where you can explore the historical sites at Fort Jefferson or spend the day bird-watching or kayaking.

Have a wonderful visit to Key West!

Luxury Beach Resort Suggestions for a Florida Family Reunion
Asked by Susan on December 03, 2009
Q: We are trying to plan a family reunion with adults and children. We are looking for a luxury beach resort, close to an airport for easy access. Any suggestions? Thanks
A: Hi Susan,

I'm so happy to hear you're planning a family reunion in Florida. Deciding where to gather the gang is probably going to be the hardest part of your planning process, since there are easily over a hundred incredible luxury resorts within easy striking distance of Florida's many airports. Herewith, some ideas to get the wheels turning about where to go:

You can fly into Palm Beach International Airport and find yourself a short drive (about 20 minutes) from one of my very favorite luxury family resorts in the state, The Resort at Singer Island (amazing spa, waterslide and lagoon pool for the kids and suite accommodation complete with full kitchens, dining areas, washer/dryers, etc.). I recently spent time with my family at The Resort at Singer Island, and blogged about why we loved the place so much here.

Also within minutes of Palm Beach county's airport is the venerable Breakers Palm Beach, with its myriad kids programs and adult diversions such as golf, fine dining (hit Top of the Point, my favorite Breakers-owned restaurant) and shopping on storied Worth Avenue and nearby Clematis Street in West Palm Beach.

Orlando's international airport is accessed by so many cities around the country, and only about an hour's drive from a great family luxury resort in Daytona Beach,The Shores Resort & Spa.

Both Tampa and St. Petersburg have major airports, from where you can easily access prime family reunion gulf coast gathering grounds such as the Loews Don CeSar and the newly renovated Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort.

Fly into  the Naples airport and you're not far from several great family reunion picks, incluing the Edgewater Beach Resort (all suites, with mini kitchens and separate living areas), Naples Grande Beach Resort (where you access the beach via a golf cart ride along a boardwalk that kids absolutely love!) and The Ritz-Carlton Naples, home to amazing kids' programs including Nature's Wonders (see my video here).

Whew! This response is getting quite long, and I have yet to delve into your many options in cities such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville and Pensacola (all of which have their own airports for easy access to nearby resorts).

If you have a specific region in Florida in mind for your gathering, feel free to write me back and I can help narrow down your options from there.

Wishing all of you a wonderful Florida rendezvous!

Kind regards,

Terry

Luxury Resorts in the Palm Coast Area
Asked by andrew smith on November 24, 2009
Q: HiLooking for a luxury resort in the Palm Coast area for a weekend in January for two adults. Can you help please? Thanks, Andrew
A: Hello Andrew,

With its close proximity to historic St. Augustine and easy-spirited Daytona Beach, the Palm Coast area offers lots of options for spending  a nice weekend. And January should be a beautiful time to visit--lucky you! Stay at any of the following three resorts in the area and I am sure you'll have a wonderful getaway:

Ginn Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast is a comprehensive luxury resort with everything from spa'ing, golf and tennis to fine dining and a water park. Click here for info on their romance packages.

If you ask me, historic St. Augustine is right up there with Florida's most romantic towns. And the Casa Monica Hotel is a beauty of a historic landmark-hotel located right in the old town--just stroll out the door for cozy dining options or a romantic walk around gas lamp-lit St. Augustine. You're a short drive from the beach, too.

My favorite property in Daytona is located a few miles south of the hubbub, in Daytona Beach Shores, at The Shores Resort & Spa. The tiled rooms here are spacious and decadent, with expansive ocean views from balconies. And my favorite thing about this place is the poolscape and oceanfront hangout areas, with firepits you can sit around while listening to the waves crash on the sand.

Wishing you a nice weekend escape!

Finest resorts in Northwest Florida?
Asked by Erik on November 19, 2009
Q: What are the very best resorts in Northwest Florida?
A: Hello,

Thank you for getting in touch with your query about resorts in Northwest Florida. The WaterColor Inn & Resort on Santa Rosa Beach is far and away my favorite luxury property in this part of Florida. And I think it fits the bill whether you're looking for a romantic escape, a golf getaway or upscale family fun in a beautiful oceanfront setting.

In the Destin area, I think you'll like the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, with beautiful balcony views of the Gulf of Mexico and a good range of kids programs and onsite dining options.

A great place for extended stays in Destin is the Silver Shells Resort, offering one to four-bedroom condo-style suites on the oceanfront that are equipped with full kitchens, washer and dryer and spacious balconies. This is a spot you can really settle in for a spell!

Also consider the Emerald Grande at HarborWalk Village, a favorite with families that opened in Destin in 2007, with a wonderful kids club and fun private boat shuttle to the beach.

Wishing you a wonderful visit!

Romantic Escape on Florida's West Coast?
Asked by suzanne on October 04, 2009
Q: My husband & I need a romantic couples beach getaway on the west coast of Florida in mid-November or early December. I want luxury accomadations, and right on the beach. Thank you
A: Hello Suzanne,

You've picked an idyllic time to visit the west coast of Florida. November and early December are beautiful here, with warm temperatures, clear waters and wide open beaches.

I was just down in Naples, and I have a few properties to recommend for you there. If you like a boutique-style resort, the Edgewater Beach Hotel is a real class act, and right on the beach in a residential area of Naples. The property was recently acquired by the Hilton, but feels more like a boutique inn than a big chain. Suites in the main building, with pool and ocean views, have recently been renovated. They are very modern and come with suite-style amenities like full refrigerators, microwaves and eat-in kitchens. There are several rooms directly on the beach, too, literally a few feet from the water. And the smallest suites at this property are 700-square-feet, so you'll have lots of room to stretch out. Since the area is more residential than commercial, you can count on romantic walks on the beach, too.

Another of my favorite Naples properties is the Naples Grande Beach Resort, a large hotel that's in the Waldorf-Astoria Collection. The Naples Grande Beach Resort is not technically directly oceanfront--it's set just behind a mangrove reserve that leads to Clam Pass Beach Park. And you actually reach the beach by taking a free golf cart shuttle right from the resort for a four-minute ride along a beautiful boardwalk. And Clam Pass Beach Park is home to one of the prettiest beaches in Florida, backed by sea grapes and lush foliage and leading to a natural pass popular with fishermen and kayakers. I stayed at the Naples Grande a few weeks ago and delighted in seeing dolphins on a daily basis, just a few yards off the beach! Room views take in the labyrinth of mangroves, too...just gorgeous (ask to be one of the higher floors for the best views).  You can see the ocean from most rooms, too.

Another wonderful west coast property that I can vouch for personally is the Sandpearl Resort in Clearwater, with contemporary decor, fine dining (the sushi, ceviche and raw bar here are out of this world) and an atmospheric beach bar for toasting sunset. My sister and I had a girls' weekend here last year, and she recently returned with her husband for a romantic getaway.

And in Siesta Key, I've heard wonderful things about the Hyatt Siesta Key Beach, a Hyatt Residence Club with luxury suites right on the beach. Until all the units here have sold to private owners, the general public is welcome to stay. And if you're looking for a luxury property with every comfort of home (kitchen, dining room, private terraces), this spot is sure to please.

I'd love to hear where you end up staying! Have a beautiful escape to Florida...

Kind regards,

Terry

Young Family Searching for Luxury Villas in Florida
Asked by anthony on October 01, 2009
Q: I am planning a holiday in Florida in January 2010 staying in a house/villa, however have no understanding as to which areas are great for a young family (children aged 6 months and 3 years). I am looking for a luxurious accomodation within a safe and secure environment. Any ideas?
A: Hi Anthony,

Thanks for getting in touch, and it's wonderful to hear you're bringing your young family to Florida in January. It's a very beautiful time of year to be here, with fabulous mild weather and all kinds of wintering birds. And no matter which part of the state you plan to visit, you can rest assured there are safe, secure and family-friendly towns to meet your needs.

I've been traveling a lot with my sister and nieces lately, so I know how nice it is to have facilities like a full kitchen, washer and dryer, etc., when you are traveling with kids. I've listed some ideas  for where to find villas (or condos that seem like proper homes) to rent:
If you decide to visit a specific town I did not cover, just write me back and I can look for luxury home rentals for you there, too. And don't forget to check out my colleague, Jill Martin's, blog and Q&A for helpful travel tips, as she's the Family Insider for VISIT FLORIDA!

Have a terrific time in Florida!

Help with an Itinerary from Miami and Key Largo to Key West
Asked by Caroline Bell on August 29, 2009
Q: Hi TerryMy husband and I are planning a 4 night holiday in the Keys.We fly into MIA on the evening of 9 December and require 4 nights accommodation. Please could you recommend a hotel in Miami for our 1st night. Ideally not far from the airport or en - route to The Keys or in Key Largo itself...we have considered the Marriott in Key Largo but are not convinced this is the best choice for us.Our current choice for Key West is the Hyatt Regency but you may know of a better choice for us.We prefer high quality modern contemporary accommodation of a hiqh standard. We look forward to hearing from you.Best wishesThe Bell FamilyEngland
A: Hello Caroline,

Four nights in the Florida Keys sounds fabulous! I suggest you think about how tired you'll be after the long flight from the UK, and factor in the time of day you'll arrive--it might be better to get a hotel in downtown Miami instead of making the drive to Key Largo right after you land in Miami.

In Downtown Miami, check out the newly opened  Epic Hotel. Its contemporary style should appeal to you, and you can start getting over the jetlag with a refreshing dip in the hotel's gorgeous rooftop pool. From downtown Miami, it's around 160 miles to Key West, but count on the drive taking you about three and a half hours, as it follows the scenic two-lane highway through the Keys for most of the way.

If you prefer to spend your first night in Key Largo, the drive will take you about one hour and twenty minutes from MIA (it's about 60 miles). The Key Largo Grande Resort & Beach Club, bordering the Gulf of Mexico and the southern boundary of the Everglades National Park, is a wonderful place to spend a night or more--it's waterfront, and the hotel recently completed $12 million in renovations and was re-branded as a Hilton, so the rooms are new and beautiful. Click here for rate specials.

In Key West, you've done your homework well. The Hyatt Key West Resort & Spa is one of my favorite Florida properties--and this hotel also recently completed renovations that have left it more beautiful than ever. You'll be a stone's throw from Duval Street, and front and center for the island's legendary sunset celebrations. Enjoy!

Family Coming from Ireland for Florida Vacation
Asked by brian rochford on August 29, 2009
Q: Hi, Our family plans to go on holiday from Ireland to Florida. Looking for a quality resort or two. Kids are 12, 10, 8 we plan to go in October for fourteen nights, will the weather be ok...
A: Dear Brian,

I think October is a lovely time to visit Florida, since the mercury levels aren't nearly as high as during the summer months. And the water will still be nice and warm for swimming. Coming from Ireland, you'll definitely appreciate that.

Wonderful that you're heading over here with the whole family. You didn't specify a part of the state you're planning to visit or which Florida airport you're flying into. Why don't you get back to me with that information so I can narrow down my search for quality, family-friendly resorts for you to consider. Florida is absolutely loaded with luxury resorts that appeal to families, and if I know more about where you hope to visit I'll be able to make some good suggestions to meet your needs.

Happy you're heading across the pond to visit us!

Planning a Wedding in Anna Maria Island
Asked by Barbara on August 28, 2009
Q: I have a client who wants to get married next spring on one of the islands. She has suggested Anna Maria. I need some information please. It will only be the couple and parents and daughter.
A: Hello Barbara,

Anna Maria Island is a romantic and stunning location for a wedding--and very close to Tampa's international airport, to make getting here a cinch. Your client obviously has great taste. it sounds like her wedding will be an intimate affair, so perhaps the group would like to consider renting a luxury home on the island. I've recently learned about a British-owned company called Pineapplefish that offers luxury home rentals on Anna Maria Island. Browse the website to see interiors and exteriors of the homes available for rent. Many of the properties are waterfront, too, and would make a beautiful setting for the wedding. Pineapplefish even has a portion of its website dedicated to suggestions for Anna Maria Island wedding locations and local wedding businesses. Just click here to start your research about the island as a wedding destination.

VISIT FLORIDA's Anna Maria Island page is full of information and photos to give you a feel for what the destination is about. And contacting the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce would also be a good start for your search for wedding information.

Good luck planning!

ISO Garden Wedding Packages in Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Key West
Asked by Tiann on August 27, 2009
Q: Hi TerryI am trying to locate an all inclusive wedding package preferably with a garden setting in Sept/Oct on a budget of around $2000-3000. Location: Fort Lauderdale/Orlando/Miami/Key West.
A: Hello again Tiann,

I can definitely suggest some ideas for gorgeous venues in the cities you requested that would be appropriate for garden weddings. As for pricing, you'll have to contact the venues to explain your specific needs and see what they can do for you. And remember, you've got some room to barter, too--wedding package prices aren't always set in stone. Have a look at what I've come up with below, then get in touch with each venue directly to discuss your catering and decoration needs:

In Orlando:
  • Harry P. Leu Gardens is a beautiful outdoor setting with several options for staging your wedding, be it indoors in an intimate gathering room or outdoors in the rose garden or lakeside verandah. I attended a beautiful wedding here last month. You can have a look at he various venues and see pricing info here.
  • The Courtyard at Lake Lucerne is a historic hotel in downtown Orlando with beautiful gardens where you can marry. Have a look at reception and catering prices by clicking here.
In Fort Lauderdale:
In Key West:
  • The Hemingway Home is another iconic Key West venue to consider, with lots of information regarding rates and rentals on the website.
In Miami:
  • Koubek Mansion & Gardens in Little Havana has a beautiful garden gazebo and cozy interior spaces, too.  Lots of rate information on the website, as well.
Good luck planning! I wish you a very happy and beautiful Florida wedding.

Do hotels allow cigarette smoking on the beach?
Asked by TONY RACKLEY on August 26, 2009
Q: Are there any hotels that allow smoking in the beach area as we are from the UK and have no way of finding out please please help we would like a good hotel hope that you can help.
A: Hello Tony,

This is an interesting point you've brought up. I have not heard of hotels banning smoking on beaches, since most beaches are open to public access in Florida. In an effort to combat litter in Sarasota, however, the city has recently adopted ordinances to ensure that tobacco usage is cordoned to designated areas. On most beaches in Florida, you'll be able to smoke. If you are worried that the hotel where you decide to stay has a specific policy against smoking on the beach, I suggest you make a quick phone call to inquire. If you prefer not to make a long distance call from the UK, just let me know which hotel you're interested in visiting and I can call to make sure that cigarette smoking is allowed on the beach.

Just be sure to deposit all butts and packaging into the bin so we can keep our beaches beautiful!

Wishing you a great time in Florida.

Florida wedding question
Asked by Tiann on August 21, 2009
Q: I am planning my garden wedding/reception/honeymoon in Sept/Oct last minute on a budget of around $2000. Can you suggest an All inclusive location for me and 25 other guests.
A: Hello Tiann,

That's wonderful news you're planning to celebrate your wedding in Florida! Perhaps you could write back and let me know which part of the state--or, better yet, a particular city or town--where you're hoping to stage your big day. That way, it will be easier for me to narrow down some possible garden options that fit into your budget.

Early congratulations--and wishing you a wonderful Florida wedding!

A Luxurious Family-Friendly Getaway?
Asked by Tamara on July 30, 2009
Q: Hello Terry,My husband is away for a couple of days and would love to take our kids on a weekend break for a couple of days. Not Miami as we have visited there before or Disney. Where do you recommend?
A: Hello Tamara,

Your email arrived in my inbox at a very opportune time, as one particular South Florida family-friendly resort is very top of mind for me at the moment! I just got back from an amazing family getaway at a luxury resort in the West Palm Beach area that I can highly recommend to you for your own family vacation.

The Resort at Singer Island is an all-suite resort on a barrier island a few miles north of Palm Beach. And since the hotel is all suites (with one or two-bedroom options), you'll have the luxury of a full kitchen, living area, balcony and even a washer and dryer to lend your vacation all the comforts of home.

I visited the resort two weekends ago with my sister, her husband and their three young daughters. The girls absolutely loved the lagoon pool, which has one of those twisty slides and huge waterfalls to splash in. There's a quieter, adult-friendly infinity pool, too, with a hot tub. And the resort is right on the ocean, so we spent a lot of time on the beach as well. My sister loved being able to throw the kids' wet clothes into the dryer after a day on the beach. And being able to cook for them in the comfort of our suite (actually more like an apartment!) was also very convenient. The resort had cribs and high chairs for us to use, too.

The Resort at Singer Island is very upscale--from the finishes in the suites (granite counters, stainless steel kitchens) to the world-class SiSpa and Solu restaurant. But it still feels welcoming to families--and there were plenty of them vacationing there. When we'd walk through the elegant lobby with our excitable entourage, it was good to feel like we were welcome.

If you're flying here, you've got lots of options when it comes to airports, too. Palm Beach International Airport is just a few miles away, and you could also fly into Fort Lauderdale or even Miami or Orlando (it took me less than three hours to drive to the resort from Orlando).

Another thing--if you book your trip during the summer months (low season), you'll get fabulous deals. Nightly rates in two-bedroom suites are in the low $300s range, with one-bedroom suites considerably less. And when you consider all the amenities and comforts this super-luxe resort offers, that's a real bargain (two bedroom suites are big enough for four adults and several children!).

Have a wonderful trip! And please let me know if you love The Resort at Singer Island as much as I do!

Villa Vacation Rentals in Miami Beach?
Asked by susan on July 23, 2009
Q: Hi Terry, we are looking for a villa we can hire for a group holiday in miami beach - do you have any recommendations as its a bit scary booking on the basis of a website (10 -20) people.
A: Hi Susan,

Thank you for getting in touch! Renting a villa in Miami Beach has a very exotic ring to it, even to my Floridian ears! What a fun way to experience the city.

I called a contact of mine at the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and she recommended you visit the website for the vacation rental agency Miami Habitat (www.miamihabitat.com) to look for homes to rent. The selection is huge, and you can choose from homes in gated neighborhoods and waterfront properties with pools - all fully furnished and with every amenity to have you feeling right at home while on vacation. Florida Elite Group also offers an impressive selection of luxury Miami Beach vacation rental homes.

Between those two sites, I'm pretty sure you'll find something to fit your needs.

Wishing you a great vacation in Florida!

Suggestions for Space Coast, Orlando and Naples Hotels?
Asked by Beryl on July 13, 2009
Q: We are a newly retired couple and live in the Isle of Man Great Britain. We have visited Florida previously but always with others. We hope to travel to Florida in November this year and look forward to receiving suggestions as to hotels. We hope to go to Canaveral and the last time stayed at Cocoa Beach. We then intend to stay in two or three different places arriving at Orlando Airport and fly back from Miami. When in Florida previously we have stayed at Disney hotels for the children andthen moved to St Pete Beach and the last time we stayed at Naples in the Naples Grand. We enjoyed this hotel but would like to be nearer 5th Avenue in the same sort of hotel.Any assistance would be appreciated
A: Hello Beryl,

I'm happy to hear you're coming back to visit us in Florida. November is an absolutely lovely time to visit and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

Since you stayed in Cocoa Beach last time, why don't you consider heading just a bit south this time to the Melbourne-area beaches and the charming seaside community of Indialantic. A really nice oceanfront hotel here that I recommend is the Radisson Suite Hotel Oceanfront - all rooms have full ocean views with balconies, and the suites allow you that additional living space, too, so you can really stretch out and relax during your holiday. You won't be too far away from Cape Canaveral if you stay here, either - just about 30 minutes by car.

If you want to stay in Orlando a few nights, you'll have no shortage of options when it comes to world-class luxury hotels. A few of my favorites to consider are the Grand Bohemian in downtown Orlando and the JW Marriott Orlando, Grand Lakes, located closer to the theme parks.

In Naples, you mentioned wanting to be close to the action along Fifth Avenue. Why not put yourself smack dab on this lovely drag by checking into the Inn on Fifth, a delightful boutique property with Mediterranean flair. Another fine Fifth Avenue option is the Bayfront Inn, a Caribbean-chic boutique hotel that's right on the water and has a scenic restaurant from which you can soak up the million dollar views. These hotels aren't as large as the Naples Grande Beach Resort, but for location and luxury, they'll definitely meet your needs.

Wishing you a wonderful return visit to Florida!

Terry
Chicago Couple Looking for Stylish, Romantic Florida Escape
Asked by K on July 09, 2009
Q: Hello Terry,Please help. I am looking for a luxury romantic hotel that is not greatly expensive (up to $299/night) near the beach. I live in Chicago so I am ALL about the scene and decor. I have been looking at the Boca Beach Club but I would like more options. I really have no preference in location, but one of the hot islands' is a plus. I am also trying to stay away from the family centered hotels. I am turning 26 and celebrating my fiance's new promotion. Please help! Ms. K
A: Dear Ms. K,

Thank you for getting in touch. And good research on your part, coming up with the idea to visit the Boca Beach Club, a lovely property that's as stylish as it is elegant.

You didn't mention what time of year you're visiting, and prices at luxury hotels vary dramatically throughout the year (if you're coming this summer, you'll find lots of good deals--the late fall and winter holiday rush times are exponentially more expensive).

Here are a few spots for you to consider that I think will meet your needs for being scene-y, romantic and  savvy when it comes to decor:

Good luck deciding. And do let me know where you and your fiance end up, if you think of it!

Looking for Couples-Only Hotels in Florida
Asked by Kendra Faucett on July 05, 2009
Q: I am interested in couple-only hotels located in Florida. I've not been able to find a complete listing of couple-only hotels.
A: Dear Kendra,

Thank you for getting in touch with this inquiry - a few other readers have also wondered if there are adult/couples-only resorts in Florida (you can see their queries and my answers if you scroll down through the Q&A section).

I have been unable to find a listing of couples-only hotels in Florida, and have come to the conclusion that, in the luxury category at least, they are a rarity.

The only property that fits the bill, where kids are actually not allowed, is Little Palm Island Resort & Spa in the Florida Keys--a magnificent property that happens to have been ranked among the best adults-only resorts in the world. If you want complete peace in a guaranteed kid-free environment, this is the place. And while the focus here is most definitely on romance in an away-from-it-all setting (you arrive on the island by a boat from the mainland), there's no guarantee that it will be couples only.

Kind regards,

Terry

Canadian Family of Three in Search of a Winter Escape
Asked by Darlene on July 05, 2009
Q: We are a family of three--two adults and an 11 year old daughter looking for a comfortable kid-friendly escape from the Canadian winter. We would like to travel to Florida in February, 2010. Any suggestions???
A: Hello Darlene,

Good thinking! Getting a jump on your vacation planning is never a bad idea. And dreaming of a warm getaway to Florida will certainly help get you through the first part of what promises to be a chilly Canadian winter. February is one of the nicest months to visit. And to be sure you'll have the sultriest temperatures possible to warm your winter weary bones, I suggest you plan your getaway in the Florida Keys.

The first place that jumped to mind when you said you're looking for a kid-friendly destination that appeals to adults, too, is Hawks Cay Resort, located on Duck Key (an island), near Marathon. If you're flying down from Canada, there's an airport in Marathon, or else you can fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale and rent a car to get here.

Your 11-year-old will get a kick out of Camp Hawk, which organizes scavenger hunts, snorkeling in the lagoon and crafts projects for participants. And there's programming for tweens, too, at The Cove, where she can mingle with kids her age (and a bit older) while participating in karaoke contests and playing video games and board games.

For the adults in your entourage, activities include tennis, biking, spa-ing and general loafing at the resort's spectacular pools and beach. You could also consider signing the family up for sailing lessons at the prestigious sailing school located at the resort, or interact with dolphins at the Dolphin Connection.

Best of luck braving the Canadian winter, and we'll look forward to your Florida visit!

Terry
Overseas Visitor Looking for Romantic Escape near Orlando
Asked by Samantha Rigby on July 01, 2009
Q: Dear Terry,I have been reading through your column and found some interesting suggestions already, though wondered if you could help. In May next year I'm flying from the UK to get married in Orlando. Before flying home we wanted to spend 2 or 3 nights by ourselves in a romantic spot for our honeymoon. As we would have to fly home from Orlando we need to be no more than 2 hours drive away. Do you have any suggestions?Thank youSam
A: Dear Sam,

Thank you for following me here on VISIT FLORIDA. So you're coming all the way from the UK to have your wedding in my hometown, Orlando. That's exciting! And May should be a very nice time of year to be here. I think it's just perfect that you're taking a few nights at the end of the festivities to unwind with your new spouse.

You mentioned you're looking for somewhere romantic, and for me, that always means spending some time on a lovely Florida beach. And I think I've found the perfect spot for you to consider in Vero Beach, less than two hours drive time from downtown Orlando (Google maps clocks the drive as taking one hour and 58 minutes, in fact!).

Check out the website of the new Kimpton property, the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa. The property is oceanfront on a stunning stretch of sand that's a popular sea turtle nesting ground (and your May visit coincides with when the turtles will be starting to lay their eggs, so you might even spot one during a nighttime stroll on the beach!). The hotel's spa won't yet be open by the time you visit (it's opening in fall 2010), but the resort does offer in-room spa services for you and your husband to consider. There are two restaurants on site, too, both with open-air seating. And do venture off property, too, to check out the town of Vero Beach, which is full of interesting shops and art galleries.

Wishing you a fabulous Florida wedding!

In Search of a Romantic Oceanfront Resort Close to an Airport
Asked by Telulah on June 14, 2009
Q: We are looking for a romantic beach front getaway for a long weekend. Four or five star accommodations, beach front, more adult-oriented (leaving the kids at home). Last year we spent the weekend at Fisher Island and loved it, but the prices have gone up?? Incredibly. Need to be within 20 minutes of the airport and we don't care what airport it is. Please help - want to go in July!! Thanks so much.
A: Hello Telulah,

Wonderful idea, planning a romantic long weekend in Florida. I've got a few recommendations that meet all of your requirements for oceanfront, romantic, luxury and close to a Florida airport (we sure have enough airports down here--you're never far from a beach after landing!). I've broken down my suggestions by the airports closest by, so you can plan your visit accordingly:

Melbourne International Airport:

Tampa International Airport or St. Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport:

Palm Beach International:

Jacksonville International Airport:

Naples Municipal Airport:

Daytona Beach International Airport:

Panama City Bay County International Airport:
Of course, if you fly into the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports, you'll find scores of fabulous oceanfront hotels nearby. And wherever you end up booking, be sure to ask about summertime discounts--many hotels, including luxury properties, are offering discounts or even a free additional night during the summer months.

And if you ask my personal favorite from the above list? That would be the Sandpearl Resort for its beautiful pool, classy restaurant, fun oceanfront bar and decadent spa. And the sand on Clearwater Beach runs like powdered sugar through your toes! Divine.

Have a lovely getaway, and thank you for getting in touch.

25th Anniversary Getaway to Fort Lauderdale
Asked by Maureen on June 11, 2009
Q: My husband and I are looking for a few resort suggestions to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in the Ft. Lauderdale area in early October. Any suggestions?
A: Hello Maureen,

Happy to help with a few resort suggestions in Fort Lauderdale for your anniversary getaway!

The  biggest news in hot luxury openings on the beach is the W Fort Lauderdale. You can't miss its unique design, meant to conjure a sailboat with sails ablow--after all, Fort Lauderdale is the center of the yachting universe. STEAK 954, the resort's star restaurant, is very stylish and romantic, too. And you can toast your 25 years together under the watchful eyes of the jellyfish floating in the stunning showroom aquarium. There's the the hotel's Bliss spa, too, promising 'tension taming' on a world-class level.

Another oceanfront place to consider is the Pelican Grand Beach Resort, directly on the beach a little north of the central hubbub of bars and restaurants. This resort is more traditional than the W--less sceney, for sure--but it ranks high for relaxation and the beautiful beach setting (no need to cross A1A to reach the beach here, either).

And for my third suggestion, I got in touch with a friend who lives in Fort Lauderdale--a former editor at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper--to ask for his tips on boutique accommodations off the beach. He recommended The Pillars at New River Sound for its intimate boutique feel and quiet location on the Intracoastal waterway, away from the beach traffic. The fine dining restaurant here, The Secret Garden, is open to hotel guests and select friends of the resort only. And I can't think of a more romantic place in Fort Lauderdale for the two of you to toast your anniversary than at a table here, under the stars, overlooking the glittering backdrop of the Intracoastal.

Happy Anniversary!

And thank you for writing,

Jacksonville Couple Looking for a Romantic Getaway Anywhere in Florida
Asked by Hope on June 10, 2009
Q: My husband and I are looking into taking a romantic 4 night getaway (just the 2 of us...no kiddos). We were originally looking into going somewhere in the Carribean but with the economy like it is thought we might save some money and stay in FL. We live in Jacksonville but aren't opposed to a long drive to find a peaceful, quiet (no kids), private, pristine beach and sparkling blue water. Any suggestions?
A: Hi Hope,

Staying here in Florida and helping out our state's economy--sounds like you're following the encouragement of VISIT FLORIDA's Share a Little Sunshine campaign! I think it's a great decision to stick around and enjoy discovering a new place in Florida instead of jetting off elsewhere in these troubled economic times. And what you save in airfare, of course, you can always put toward staying somewhere really special here!

You mentioned you're looking for a place with no kids, and there are actually only a few luxury resorts in Florida that enforce this rule, including Little Palm Island Resort & Spa in the Florida Keys--a magnificent property that happens to have been ranked among the best adults-only resorts in the world. Little Palm Island also fulfills your wishes for pristine beaches, sparkling blue water and a private setting.

There are many other resorts I can recommend that meet most of your criteria, too--with the exception of the 'no kids' part. And even if children are allowed at the following places, these resorts are definitely more adult-minded retreats than kiddie-oriented. If you're looking for relaxation in a beautiful setting, consider these resorts:
Take a look at those and see if they appeal to the two of you. And do feel free to write me back with any additional questions!

A Luxury Honeymoon Destination With A Bit of Everything
Asked by Annet Lam on June 10, 2009
Q: My fiancée and I are currently planning our honeymoon: Destination Florida. We need your help!! We would like to go somewhere exclusive, beach view rooms, spa, great dining, great pool, relaxing on the beach, etc. We just want to relax and enjoy our stay. I visited Little Palm Island on the web, absolutely gorgeous I feel in love… I feel it’s a bit on the pricy side. Any other suggestions?
A: Hi Annet,

So you want it all, eh? Well, I certainly don't blame you! And particularly not on your honeymoon, when nailing down the most perfect place to stay is well worth all the research you're bound to be putting into it.

You didn't specify a region in Florida, which I'll take to mean you're open to anywhere in the state. Below, I've broken down my favorite picks by region--and you can rest assured each resort meets all your requirements (while managing to be less expensive than lovely Little Palm Island, too):

GREATER MIAMI

FLORIDA KEYS
NORTH FLORIDA
SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
PALM BEACH AREA

NORTHWEST FLORIDA
Whew! I could easily come up with scores of other oceanfront luxury hotels in the state - how could I forget to add one of my all time favorites, the Sandpearl Resort in Clearwater Beach - with fabulous spas, restaurants, pools and sea views. But I think you've got your hands full here.

So get researching--and rest assured  you'll have no shortage of options for a honeymoon to remember!

Couple In Search of Long Weekend Suggestions
Asked by Jessica on June 09, 2009
Q: My husband and I are late 30's/early 40's, looking for a long weekend destination that provides luxury accomodations, great beach/pool access, and nightlife (not clubs, just something to do 10pm to 1am) We are flexible with the destination in Florida. Thanks, Jessica
A: Hi Jessica,

I can relate to your request as I'm cut from a similar mold--approaching my mid-30s and also more into subdued nightlife than something raucous. The promise of a luxurious room and fabulous pool when I go on vacation is important to me, too.

The first place that came to mind when I read your request was the new One Ocean Resort in Atlantic Beach in North Florida, just east of downtown Jacksonville. At the beginning of the year, I visited Atlantic Beach and stayed at the resort to report a story for a VISIT FLORIDA publication. The hotel is absolutely beautiful, with an oceanfront spa (you can sit and watch the breakers after your treatment while you relax with an herbal tea), a hip restaurant and a pretty pool surrounded by plush lounge chairs. And the other half of the equation is Atlantic Beach itself, which offers plenty to do in the way of nightlife (your choice of dive beach bars or stylish South Beach-style lounges). The two of you definitely won't be bored if you stay here, and the best part is you won't need a car either, as everything from the beach to restaurants, bars and shops is a short stroll away. As you're spending a long weekend, you can also check out nearby Downtown Jacksonville and the funky Five Points neighborhood, and perhaps  Hanna Park (a mountain-biking paradise with hardwood hammocks and a gorgeous beach), too.

Another resort I think you should consider for your long weekend in Florida is Coste d'Este in Vero Beach, on the Treasure Coast. Again, this is a luxury hotel with a fabulous spa and sublime oceanfront setting, as well as a great Cuban-fusion restaurant, Oriente. And in this case, you'll find plenty to do at night over a long weekend without even leaving the hotel, if you wish. Costa d'Este is Gloria and Emilio Estefan's property, so music factors in in a big way. The pool area and cabana bar are really atmospheric, and on Friday and Saturday nights, DJs spin upbeat music while locals and out-of-towners take to the dance floor under the stars. Sunday evenings are no slouch either, with a live band performing on the pool deck from 4PM-8PM. Of course, when you're ready to hit the sack your room is not too far away. Cheers to that.

And I would be remiss not to mention Miami when nightlife and a luxury stay with a prime pool and oceanfront setting is the driving force of your visit. The options here are endless, particularly in South Beach. My picks for oceanfront hotels with stunning pools, luxury digs and nightlife under the same roof include the Delano, Gansevoort South, The Raleigh and the Shore Club.

Wishing the two of you a relaxing getaway--with just the right amount of action, too.

Kind regards,

Terry
Basing in Fort Lauderdale and hitting Miami Beach, too
Asked by Deb on June 04, 2009
Q: Can you tell me what you think of the Pelican Cove Resort in Fort Lauderdale? If we stay there for 3 nights, would it be a hassle to drive to the beaches we want to visit...Fort Lauderdale Beach and Miami Beach? Please let me know soon if you can as we are leaving in a week. Thank you.
A: Hello Deb,

Many thanks for getting in touch. I think you might be talking about the Pelican Grand Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale - the Pelican Cove Resort is actually in Islamorada. But please correct me if I am wrong.

Assuming you're looking to stay at the Fort Lauderdale hotel, I can assure you that the Pelican Grand Beach Resort is a highly regarded property with a stunning oceanfront location that attracts a good deal of discerning European tourists. You'll hear so much German spoken by guests here, you might think you're across the pond! If you're traveling with kids, they'll get a kick out of the hotel's lazy river.

As far as proximity to Fort Lauderdale Beach, the hotel fronts a 500-foot-long stretch of it. So getting there just requires exiting your room and taking the boardwalk to the sand! The hotel is a short drive or decent walk north of Fort Lauderdale Beach's main restaurant and nightlife area around Sunrise Boulevard, which means it's quieter here, too.

if you're looking to base in Fort Lauderdale and travel to Miami Beach, count on a little less than an hour's drive time to South Beach (around 40 miles away). Try to drive outside of rush hour to make the journey as mellow as possible. And if you're not in a hurry, considering taking A1A (instead of I-95) the whole way south, stopping off at other great beach towns such as Hollywood and Hallandale Beach.

Have a wonderful time in South Florida!

Kind regards,

Terry

Q: A friend and I will be traveling to the Ft. Myers area in October for a girls weekend. We are looking more for a resort and spa type atmosphere that is oceanfront. are there any that you recommend?
A:
Hello Kelly,

A girls weekend! How fun. The beaches of Fort Myers and the surrounding sandspun locales of Boca Grande, Captiva Island and Sanibel Island have plenty to offer when it comes to oceanfront spa resort escapes. Herewith, a few of my favorites:

Pink Shell Beach Resort & Spa
Oceanfront on Fort Myers Beach, this friendly resort offers yacht-sailing courses, in case you and your friend want to try something new.

GullWing Beach Resort
Luxury condo-accommodations on Fort Myers Beach. A beautiful spa. And blissfully oceanfront. All the boxes you're looking for get checked here, too.

Casa Ybel Resort
Oceanfront on Sanibel Island, Casa Ybel has Victorian charm and one- or two-bedroom condo-style lodging.

South Seas Island Resort
Celebrities favor this sprawling, gated resort on Captiva Island--oceanfront with an Asian-inspired spa.

The Gasparilla Inn & Club
For old Florida luxury, you can't beat this gorgeous resort in Boca Grande, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's located about 90 minutes from Fort Myers. Spa services include stone therapy massages and seasalt glo scrubs.

Have a wonderful time in Southwest Florida with your friend!

We would like it to have a great pool and be able to go to the beach also. If you have any ideas, I would really appreciate it. We are taking our 2 sons, 20 and 17. Thanks, Angie
A: Hello Angie,

Thank you for getting in touch. For great pools and easy beach access in a luxury resort environment, here are my two favorite Destin properties:

Hilton Sandestin Beach Resort & Spa
The roomy suites here will easily accommodate the four of you. The property is oceanfront with golf courses, tennis courts, a heated indoor pool and two outdoor pools. There are several onsite restaurants, a spa and fitness center, too.

Silver Shells Beach Resort and Spa
This luxury condominium property also offers vacation rentals. You can can choose from two- or three-bedroom suites, all with full kitchens and living rooms, as well as optional amenities such as balconies and whirlpool tubs. The resort is oceanfront, with three great pools, tennis and basketball courts, restaurants and bars, and a spa and fitness center.

Looking For All-Inclusive Florida Resorts
Asked by Theresa on May 25, 2009
Q: My friend and I are looking for an all-inclusive resort in Florida. Could you please help us locate one? The only one I found so far is the Sandpiper which is not Oceanfront. We would like it to be Oceanfront and all-inclusive.Thank you.
A:
Hello Theresa,

A vacation haven it is, but Florida is not known for being an all-inclusive resort hotspot. So that's why you've had trouble locating all-inclusive options here! The Club Med Sandpiper in Port St. Lucie is a fine property, but as you noted, it's not oceanfront.

I was able to find two additional all-inclusive luxury oceanfront properties in Florida for you to consider, however.

Amelia Island Plantation, oceanfront on Amelia Island (just north of Jacksonville), is a beautiful AAA-Four Diamond resort with all-inclusive packages that offer accommodations (from ocean-view rooms to three-bedroom villas) and the following inclusions:
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner, daily
  • Beach chairs and umbrellas
  • Nature tours and bicycle rentals
  • Supervised youth and teen programs
  • Greens fees and golf carts
  • Health and fitness center access
  • Fishing rods and reels for surf-fishing
  • Poolside hair-braiding, airbrush tattoos and crafts
Rates at Amelia Island Plantation start from $577 per night for a double room, and the price excludes alcoholic beverages.

The other all-inclusive Florida property to consider is the creme-de-la-creme Little Palm Island Resort & Spa, one of my picks for the very best luxury Florida highlights. The resort reigns supreme on its own private island (Little Torch Key) in the Florida Keys, and is widely considered one of the best resorts in the world. Lodging is all oceanfront, in private bungalows (some with outdoor showers and jetted tubs). And all-inclusive packages at Little Palm Island include breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, as well as all non-motorized water sports (kayaking, snorkeling and the like). Check this link for special value packages good for summertime stays.

Wishing you and your friend a fabulous Florida vacation. Thanks for writing!

Are all South Beach hotels 21 and up?
Asked by Mayra on May 18, 2009
Q: My boyfriend and I are planning on going to Miami this summer and we wanted to stay at the Catalina Hotel and Beach Club but you have to be over 21. And we are 18 and 19. Are there any hotels that aren't 21 and up in Miami on South Beach?
A: Hello Mayra,

Thank you for getting in touch. I can certainly understand your dilemma. I called around to a bunch of my favorite South Beach hotels, including the Catalina Hotel & Beach Club, and was told the same thing over and over - that you have to be 21 years old, or with someone who is 21, to be able to check into most of the hotels on South Beach.

Unfortunately, most of the luxury hotels in downtown Miami have the same rule, too.

I suppose it's to cut down on damage to the hotel due to excessive partying in a town that is definitely known for getting a little wild!

Still, it makes things tough for you and your boyfriend to find a place to stay, doesn't it?

I did manage to get an affirmative from three fabulous luxury hotels in South Beach that people 18 and up are welcome to book a room. I would advise that when you call back on your own to book your room, however, that you're up front with your age so you can be sure not to have any problems on arrival.

The following iconic luxury properties in South Beach confirmed to me that they accept reservations from people 18 and older, so give these a try:

The Setai

2001 Collins Ave., Miami Beach
305-520-6000

Delano Miami
1685 Collins Ave., Miami Beach
305-672-2000

Gansevoort South
2377 Collins Ave., Miami Beach
305-604-1000

And keep in mind that even if you're able to book a room, there might be restrictions on where you're allowed to hang out in the hotel. At the Gansevoort South, for example, guests under the age of 21 are not allowed to access the rooftop pool (you can hang at the third-floor family pool, however, a very nice drink of water, too).

The beach, of course, is open to all!

Have a blast in South Beach!

Kind regards,

Where Should Three Couples Celebrate our Anniversaries?
Asked by jane on May 12, 2009
Q: We are three couples celebrating 20-year marriages. We want a little excitement, activity, luxury and few children as ours will be at home. Is there anything past Destin but before Fort Lauderdale on the beach that fits our dream?
A: Dear Jane,

How fun that you and your good friends get to celebrate such a happy occasion together. And if you ask my humble opinion, narrowing down your party plans to Florida is a fabulous first step! Now, where to gather the gang for some 20th anniversary fun...

Your request for somewhere "past Destin but before Fort Lauderdale on the beach" is a pretty broad one. So I've decided to rattle off three of my favorite Florida beach towns where I think you're pretty much guaranteed to have a great time--with luxury, excitment and activities all part of the package.

Atlantic Beach
An adorable seaside community just east of downtown Jacksonville with a lovely town center, great restaurants and spa options, too.
Vero Beach
Tony Vero Beach offers a heady mix of fabulous, empty beaches and sophisticated dining and shopping.
Delray Beach
Imagine a quaint beach town with a sophisticated urban mentality. Great beaches, creative galleries and to-die-for restaurants are the lure in dynamic Delray Beach.
  • For Luxury: Boutique lodging with an artistic slant awaits at Sundy House, a Kessler Collection property that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  • For Excitement: Downtown Delray Beach has a slew of restaurants, bars and shops to cater to everyone from sophisticates to salty dogs
  • For Activities: Get inspired with a spot of gallery hopping with the gang
Now, you've got some decisions to make! All three of these beach towns make for terrific adult-friendly escapes.

Congratulations to you and your friends on your 20th wedding anniversary, and have a wonderful time together in Florida, wherever you wind up!

Kind regards--and thank you for writing!

Where to Stay in Amelia Island/Fernandina
Asked by Toni on May 10, 2009
Q: My hubby and are are planning to travel to Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach area this summer...We like the looks of the Williams House and the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge---but are stuck on which to choose!? Can you help? THANKS!
A: Hello Toni,

You're going to love Amelia Island and nearby Fernandina Beach. And The Amelia Island Williams House and Elizabeth Pointe Lodge are both very fine properties.

I have to say I'm an oceanfront type of girl, and the beaches in North Florida are absolutely stunning. Wide stretches of sand, billowing dunes--and blissfully bereft of crowds, too!  So my pick of the two properties you're considering would be the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge, since it's oceanfront. If you prefer to be based in a historic neighborhood, then you're going to love the Williams House, too, with its sweeping verandas, gingerbread design and southern style. Really, you won't go wrong with either place--it just depends on your personal taste.

I stayed at the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge a few years back, when I lived nearby in Jacksonville and went to Amelia Island for a romantic getaway with my boyfriend. It's a really special property, with something of a New England feel to the architecture. And being oceanfront on a gorgeous stretch of Amelia Island beach made the experience of sipping morning coffee with my guy on our balcony at the lodge that much more special.

Have a lovely getaway with your husband--and let me know what you think, wherever you decide to stay!

Terry
Looking for luxury spa resorts in Orlando
Asked by Al Sulkes on April 26, 2009
Q: Luxury spa resorts in the Orlando area?
A:
Hello Al,

So you're considering Orlando for a spa getaway! Excellent. Well, this is my hometown, so I might be a bit biased, but I think Orlando offers some of the best spa resorts in the state, if not the entire country.

People come from all over the world to visit our theme park attractions. And with European visitors o'plenty, Orlando's spa standard is higher than average - perhaps it's the effect of adapting to the demands of an influx of visitors from countries where spa'ing is simply a way of life!

Your request is straightforward, so I'll keep my answer equally concise. Here are my picks for the top three luxury spa resorts in Orlando:

The Orlando Ritz-Carlton, Grande Lakes
This is a large-scale facility (there are 40 treatment rooms) that maintains an intimate and exclusive feel. Treatments range from standard facials and peels to the signature East Indian Lime Scalp and Body Massage that uses essential oils to transport you very far away. My favorite thing about the spa experience here is the 4,000-square-foot private outdoor pool (heated in winter) that's available to spa guests only (the hotel itself has another pool). After your treatment, you can retire to the pool area for reading, swimming and relaxing. Plan a full day of indulging, for sure.

Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center
Another property where the spa is as much of a destination as the hotel, this Kissimmee resort is home to the Canyon Ranch Spa Club, one of the most esteemed names in personal pampering. The facility sprawls for 20,000 square feet, with 25 treatment rooms for partaking in a range of therapies inspired by Japan, Fiji, the Middle East and beyond. I like the sauna and the fabulous fitness area, with an effective pilates program for beginners. Again, this place warrants a whole day of your down time.

Loews Portofino Bay Resort at Universal Orlando
Recently renovated, the Mandara Spa at this beautiful resort on the doorstep of Universal Orlando offers a four-hand massage that is as close to heaven as you can get within four walls. Treatments encompass everything from tooth whitening to cellulite-targeting wraps and anti-aging facials.

Wishing you a very relaxing Orlando escape!

Kind regards,

Terry

Asked by Laura Allred on April 22, 2009
Q: My daughter will turn 21. We are coming to Clearwater on May 10th. Stay for a week. Her boyfriend is in the military. We want ocean front. Love the Sandpearl, but too pricey for us. Any suggestions for nice oceanfront? Four adults would love to have a 2-bedroom suite. Or 1 bedroom with pullout sofa in living area. How is the Marriott on Sand Key? Thanks for any advice.
A: Dear Laura,

What a nice idea to plan a getaway to Clearwater Beach in honor of your daughter's 21st birthday!

I think you've actually homed in on the best moderately priced luxury place for the four of you to stay in asking me about the Clearwater Beach Marriott Suites on Sand Key. But you should know that this property is fronting Clearwater Bay, so it's not actually oceanfront. There is a free hotel shuttle, however, to whisk you 200 yards away to the beach (a five-minute walk). And the hotel, I've heard, is very nice. The four of you could easily stay in a suite.

I gave the hotel a quick call to check rates for the period you're looking to go, and was quoted $219 per night for bay-view suites with balconies, king or twin beds in the master bedroom and a living area with a pullout sofa bed. If you book in advance and agree to a non-refundable reservation with no changes allowed (sounds like your dates are set in stone anyway, so this might work!), you can get the room for even cheaper - just $169 per night (ask for the advance purchase rate). There's free parking on site, too.

Have a great getaway, and tell your daughter to have a happy 21st birthday from me!

Family vacation options in Vero Beach
Asked by Janet on April 17, 2009
Q: Hi Terry,I am planning a trip to visit my mother-in-law in Vero Beach this summer. I'm looking for an oceanfront hotel in the area for myself, my husband and our three small children. I only know of the Disney Resort, which does not interest us. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
A:
Hello Janet,

Three small children! Sounds like full-time fun. Regardless of their ages (young, I imagine!), I am sure you will all welcome a vacation together. And Vero Beach, in my humble opinion, offers one of Florida's prettiest seaside settings - and very family-friendly, too, with a low-key vibe that makes it easy to unwind.

Do you happen to be a Florida resident? I actually just blogged about a deal for Florida residents that's being featured this summer at the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa - a new Kimpton property with an oceanfront setting that's second to none. This summer, Florida residents are privy to room rates starting from just $89 per night for weekday stays.

But even if you're planning just a weekend visit or coming to Vero from out of state, there are plenty of reasons to consider this property for your family's vacation.

The Vero Beach Hotel & Spa has one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, so the five of you will have room to spread out. You can even have your mother-in-law over - with room to spare!

Children are greeted at the hotel with a KimptonKids welcome gift.  And to make your life easier, cribs, high chairs and in-room child safety kits (complete with outlet covers, toilet latches and nightlights) are also provided free of charge by the hotel (with strollers available to rent, too).

The hotel also offers accredited babysitting services, in case you and your husband want some quiet time on your own.

I hope you have a wonderful family vacation in Vero!

Is Hawks Cay a good luxury destination for families?
Asked by sandy on April 08, 2009
Q: Is Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key a good choice for my family? We Have two boys, 9 and 12. We loved Sanibel three times and are looking for a change, but I am scared!
A:
Hello Sandy,

I know how hard it can be to branch out when you've found a family travel destination you love (my family's been hitting the same Northwest Florida beach since I was a kid!). Sanibel is a wonderful spot. But variety, as they say, is the spice of life. And Florida overflows with diverse locales for fabulous family fun.

Way to hone in on Hawks Cay in the Florida Keys! Did you know the resort completed a $35 million renovation last year? For a full-service luxury destination with something to offer everyone across the age spectrum, you've picked a prime spot.

Consider booking your family into one of the two-, three- or four-bedroom villas at Hawks Cay, complete with kitchens so you can whip up snacks for your growing boys and hors d'oeuvres to enjoy at sunset. The villas also have washers and dryers, and we all know what a perk that is on a sandy vacation in the sun!

Other Hawks Cay highlights that make it a fine family vacation destination include a free shuttle to whisk all of you around the property's 60 acres. And your boys might also enjoy Camp Hawk--a daily program, from 9AM - 1PM, that will engage them in things like trail hikes, snorkeling in the lagoon and scavenger hunts.

The resort also offers a Family Adventure package that you might want to consider--it includes daily breakfast at The Terrace, kayaking tours and a dockside dolphin encounter, among other activities. I also recently blogged about a deal on family sailing lessons at Hawks Cay--when two adults take lessons, kids learn free! In short, there's absolutely no shortage of ways to keep everyone entertained on this beautiful island. I think you've selected an ideal spot for your family vacation.

Have a wonderful time!

Honeymoon in Daytona and St. Augustine
Asked by Danelle on March 29, 2009
Q: Do you know of any good resorts and spas in Daytona Beach and in St. Augustine? I was wondering because my husband and I are going to stay in Orlando, Daytona and St. Augustine for our honeymoon and if you could help out I would greatly appreciate it.
A: Hi Danelle,

Nice to hear from you! You've picked some fine Florida locales for enjoying your honeymoon. Daytona Beach and St. Augustine offer a really good mix of action, culture and beachy pursuits, so you'll get the best of both worlds with your soon-to-be-spouse.

In Daytona Beach, for a top-class spa and oceanfront resort, my pick is always The Shores Resort & Spa, with its peaceful oceanfront setting in Daytona Beach Shores (a few miles south of Daytona's busiest stretch). If bed and breakfasts appeal to you, consider the River Lily Bed and Breakfast, which fronts the Halifax River in Daytona and has a spacious honeymoon suite with a big Jacuzzi tub. VISIT FLORIDA has a great writeup about the River Lily, too--just click here for a description and photos.

And good call on St. Augustine, one of Florida's most atmospheric small towns. You can't get any more romantic and elegant than the Casa Monica Hotel here, a AAA Four Diamond property that dates to 1888 and looks like it was pulled straight from the pages of a fairy tale. Queen Sophia of Spain even visited the Casa Monica Hotel in 2001. Hey, if it's good enough for royalty, I'm pretty sure the two of you will be pleased, too. And be sure to let me know how you like it, please!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. And have a wonderful honeymoon in Florida.

Kind regards,

Weekend Getaway Advice for Sanibel and Boca Raton
Asked by Gwen Horter on March 20, 2009
Q: My husband and I are planning a weekend trip to Florida. We are looking at either staying at the Beach Club at Boca Raton Resort & Club or the Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa. Could you please give us any recommendations?Thank you.
A: Hello Gwen,

It's nice to have options, isn't it? And you've narrowed down your Florida weekend getaway destinations to two terrific resorts. I stayed at the Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa a few years ago, and it is a lovely hotel with a beautifully landscaped pool, great tennis courts and spa and a very traditional overall feel. Sanibel Island itself offers exciting nature activities and excellent dining, and makes a perfect weekend destination.

But, since you asked my advice, I'm inclined to recommend you venture to the Beach Club at Boca Raton Resort & Club. I've been hearing a lot of buzz about this place of late. The Beach Club underwent a huge renovation and only recently re-opened, and the new look is a mix of European-meets-South Beach styling that's really contemporary and classy. The new oceanfront poolscape has three pools and stunning poolside lanai cabanas for overnight stays. And the rooms and suites elsewhere in the hotel also reflect the cabana feel, with sheer white fabrics framing floor-to-ceiling windows that take in Atlantic or Intracoastal views. If you like boutique-style luxury with all the amenities of a great resort, this is the place--with all the cultural offerings of vibrant Boca Raton nearby, too.

And if you happen to be planning your weekend getaway between now and April 30, 2009, you can take advantage of the Beach Club's winter getaway special. For every two nights you stay, you'll receive a $50 resort credit that you can put toward the onsite restaurants, spa, water sports and more (four-night stays get you $100 in credit, six-night stays are good for $150 credit, and so forth).

Have a delightful weekend away!

Kind regards,

Terry
Asked by Lacey on March 17, 2009
Q: I am getting married in September and we are wanting to go to Florida for our honeymoon. We are looking for a nice ocean front condo that would be good for our honeymoon. Have any suggestions??
A: Hello Lacey,

Thank you for getting in touch. I'm glad to hear you're planning to spend your honeymoon in Florida. I can imagine you're feeling overwhelmed deciding which of our many great beaches to visit with your future spouse. At least you've narrowed your search down to oceanfront! Alhough that, of course, still counts thousands upon thousands of condominium rentals across the state.

Have you considered Panama City? I've been hearing good things about the new Splash! resort there, part of the Sterling Resorts family. Oceanfront on Panama City Beach, the property features one, two and three bedroom condominiums with full kitchens and washers and dryers. Now, I will say that this is a family-friendly sort of place. The water park and lazy river definitely attract the kids (though they'll be back to school, for the most part, come September). But there's an adults only hot tub. And the two of you can find plenty of peace and quiet on your unit's private balcony, too. The Sterling Resorts website is also a good resource for other condominium rentals in the Panhandle, with units available for rent in the South Walton Beaches and Destin and nearby Miramar.

Have a great time! And congratulations.

Kind regards,

Terry
Luxury Resorts with Lazy Rivers
Asked by kim on March 16, 2009
Q: Hi Terry, we are looking for a Florida resort with a really great lazy river. One similar to the river at the Hyatt Coconut Plantation in Bonita Springs. Do you have a list of possibilities? Thanks.
A: Hello Kim,

Now there's a question straight after my own heart--and just in time for family fun over Spring Break, no less! I love a good float down a lazy river. What a deliciously passive way to while away a sunny Florida day. Here's what I've come up with across the state for top end resorts with lazy rivers on site:

Enjoy the floating--and don't forget the sunscreen!

Florida's Wedding Destinations
Asked by Kimberly on March 11, 2009
Q: Dear Terry, What is the best place to have a wedding and honeymoon? This is a second time around for us both. But we want it to be memorable. Thanks.
A: Hi KK,

Thank you for writing! And a big congratulations on your upcoming wedding celebration--how wonderful you're planning a Florida wedding! There's certainly no shortage of wedding-photo-worthy beaches and romantic bed and breakfasts for you to choose from across the state. And since you haven't specified a particular town or region of Florida, I'll give you two of my favorite options, with an east coast and a west coast pick.

I recently visited Atlantic Beach in North Florida, a quiet coastal community just east of Jacksonville. It's home to wide beaches, funky shops, fabulous restaurants and a beautiful new luxury hotel, the One Ocean Resort. And you know what I was thinking when I was there? What an ideal spot this town would be for gathering friends and family for a wedding! Atlantic Beach really impresses visitors with its friendly beach town vibe, pretty beach bungalow architecture and lack of highrises--and there's tons in the area to keep your guests busy both leading up to and after the big day. Even though One Ocean Resort only opened last year, this place is already old hat at hosting weddings on site. The hotel's grand entrance just begs to be a wedding photo backdrop, and couples marrying elsewhere even come here just to get their photos taken. I can also personally recommend the Spa at One Ocean, which has oceanfront views and a great seashell massage on the spa menu (the marine version of hot stone) to get you fully relaxed before you say your vows. And you can plan your rehearsal dinner at the hotel's stylish restaurant, Azurea, or walk across the street to one of the many restaurants in Atlantic Beach or nearby Neptune Beach. Your guests won't need to step into their car from the moment they arrive in town--everything is within easy walking distance, which makes the logistics planning on your end all the easier.

Moving across the state to Clearwater, the Sandpearl Resort comes to mind as an excellent place to host a wedding. Another newcomer to Florida's luxury hotel scene (the property opened in 2007 and still feels brand spanking new), the Sandpearl, too, is well versed in making things extra special for wedding celebrations. The property is oceanfront with a fabulous pool, and lots of private nooks set throughout the tropical landscaping that are perfect for staging your vows. The hotel's restaurant, Caretta on the Gulf, can cater your event with a menu of fabulous local seafood dishes.

You mentioned honeymooning in Florida, too, and I can assure that either of these properties would make a delightful and relaxing escape for you and your future husband.

Congratulations! And thanks for writing.

Kind regards,

Terry
Planning a Miami Itinerary in Late March
Asked by rajeev kapur on February 18, 2009
Q: We are planning to be in the Miami area in conjunction with the Sony Ericsson tennis tournament arriving March 23 and leaving on April 1. What is the best way to get some help in planning an itinerary?
A: Planning a Miami Itinerary in Late MarchHello Rajeev,

Thank you for getting in touch! That's fabulous you're going to be in Miami for the Sony Ericsson Open at the end of March.

Despite witnessing such an exciting event, you'll also get to experience South Florida at one of the most agreeable times of the year, weather wise. And with the tournament taking place on Key Biscayne, you'll have the added bonus of automatically finding yourself in one of Miami's prettiest neighborhoods - and within easy striking distance of the South Beach nightlife and downtown and the Design District's  shopping and architectural highlights, too.

Since you didn't mention specific goals for your visit, outside of the tournament, I'll congratulate you for finding your way to the VISIT FLORIDA site. Here, you can research everything from resorts and dining to golf, museums and nature pursuits in and around Miami.

Whenever I'm visiting Miami, I also like to check out the website of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. There, you'll find blogs about the city's hottest destinations, and one link that I think you'll find particularly useful for planning your trip: a sample seven-day itinerary that covers many of the city's highlights, from guided walking tours through Little Havana to a visit to the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

And while you're on Key Biscayne for the court action, be sure to plan time for a meal or drink at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne which made Travel+Leisure's 2009 list of the Top 500 hotels in the world. The oceanfront setting, near Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, is really something special.

Have a great time taking in the tennis - and all of Miami's other offerings, too!

Kind regards,

Terry
