Floridians Fare Well at Year's First Major
April 06, 2009

The LPGA Tour's first major of the year was dominated by a trio of Floridians. Seminole's Brittany Lincicome is the 2009 Kraft Nabisco Champion after two brillant shots on the 72nd hole of the tournament set up a short eagle putt she ultimately converted.

Brittany's nine under par total of 278 was one shot better than Tampa's Kristy McPherson and Miami's Christy Kerr. The win was the 23-year-old Brittany's third of her young career and came during a rather long dry spell. No matter how long a golfer struggles there is always hope, and Brittany found hope and comfort being paired in the last group with her good friend Kristy McPherson and 2007 US Women's Open Champion Cristie Kerr.

Tying for low amateur honors at two over par 290 was golf prodigy Alexis Thompson. Alexis is a 14-year-old from Coral Springs who plays much older and wiser than her teen years. Alexis shot a final round 69 that is a sign of things to come. My guess is Alexis will win on the LPGA Tour before her 21st birthday. Her opportunities to win will be determined by her choice out of high school of going to college or not. Either way her talent is world-class and it is only a matter of time.
