The 2009 ballots for entry into the World Golf Hall of Fame were released this month. New candidates this year are Irishman Darren Clark and Americans Jay Haas and Kenny Perry.
These gentlemen will join the top returning vote getters from 2008 which included Lanny Wadkins and Mark O'Meara. If I had a vote I would vote for Lanny and his 21 PGA Tour victories. Those victories included one professional major as well as a Players Championship. Lanny also owns a U.S. Amateur victory which should not be overlooked.
Lanny has not found success on the Champions Tour which may sway today's voters. What I remember about Lanny was that when he was in contention he never backed down. He always looked as if he wanted to hit that last pressure-packed shot; like the wedge he hit to secure the 1983 Ryder Cup at PGA National.
His skills in his prime and his outstanding record deserve enshrinement come November. |
