Key West Golf Club Offers the Only Caribbean Golf in the U.S.
June 09, 2009
I have just returned from a trip to our southernmost island in the Florida Keys – Key West. To my surprise and glee, there is a wonderful Rees Jones-designed course that is open for public play. When Rees split off from his famous father’s golf architecture firm (Robert Trent Jones, Sr.) in 1983, his first attempt was the Key West Golf Club.

This is an enjoyable course to play – 6,531 yards from the back tees with great new paspalum grass greens that roll true. Lots of mangrove fields to navigate and plenty of saltwater ponds with tarpon (yes, that’s right – tarpon) swimming in them. The ever-present wild chickens of Key West roam the landscape, as well as some extra large iguanas. They look fierce, but they’ll do you no harm, so play away. All this makes for an exciting day of golf in a fun town.

After your round, you can get a cold beverage in the adjacent Wedges Bar & Grill or proceed downtown to Duval Street to frequent the many restaurants and bars that make Key West famous.

Look for a full feature story and more pictures soon of my visit to Key West. Check out the Key West GC website for details: www.keywestgolf.com.
