Victoria Hills is one of Florida's better, reasonably priced public golf courses, set in the small town of DeLand, 35 miles from Orlando.
It was designed by Florida-based architect Ron Garl, and is visually striking as soon as you step up to the first tee, with rolling, bucking terrain and vast, sandy waste areas.
It's a course that requires accuracy. The big, deep and ubiquitous fairway bunkers can be intimidating off the tee and because of the undulations around and on the greens, you need a good short game to score well here. This is a course that will test you at the same time you're enjoying its beauty.
Oddly, most of the play at the course comes from out of town, but there are some deals going on that could change that.
The club has a player development card for about $35 a month that gives you unlimited range balls and unlimited rounds of golf for cart fee only of $19.
The V-card is another option. It provides unlimited, discount golf through April 30, 2010.
Choose between weekday or weekend cards for $25 or $40 for both; the price jumps to $55 after Dec. 31. The weekday cards give you $39 rates and the weekend allows for $49 rates.
