| If you are going anywhere near the Daytona Beach area (for Speedweeks at the Daytona Speedway, the great beaches or a motorcycle rally) you should make time to go about 25 miles south to historic DeLand, FL and play the wonderful Victoria Hills Golf Club.
This relatively new track has been opened since 2002 and the Ron Garl design has garnered multiple honors such as a “Top 10 You Can Play” from GOLF Magazine, 4 ½ star rating from Golf Digest, “America’s Top 40 Best New Courses” from Golfweek, “No. 2 Florida Public Course of the New Millennium” from Travel + Leisure Golf and the Orlando Sentinel calls it “One of the region’s top 10 courses”. Not bad.
At 6,989 yards from the tips and a par 72, this layout is strong enough to have hosted both a US Open and US Senior Open qualifier as well as multiple collegiate events. In fact, it is the home course for the Stetson University’s men’s and women’s golf teams.
With plenty of live oaks and rolling hills it has a real Florida flavor, but the many sandy waste areas and pine trees will have you thinking of Pine Valley. To add some more spice there are parts of the 150 acre course with native grasses and even some lava rock imported from Hawaii.
When you finish your round of golf you must stop in the Mulligan’s Tavern & Grille located in the clubhouse. The chef there is a fellow named Scot Choquette who has served as the personal chef for actor John Travolta.
