Back in the mid 1980s when I worked for Mr. Hogan at the Ben Hogan Co., we had one of the fiercest competitors in golf on our professional PGA Tour staff -- Lanny Wadkins.
I'm proud to say that we made Lanny's golf clubs for him and it sure looks like they worked to his satisfaction. Lanny has an impressive golf resume that includes the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1970 and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1972. He has accumulated 21 PGA Tour wins including the 1977 PGA Championship and 1979 PLAYERS Championship. He has he won golf tournaments all over the world.
Voted PGA Player of the year in 1985, Lanny is perhaps known best for his strong showings in the eight Ryder Cup Teams for which he has played. His record of 20-11-3 is one of the best ever.
Lanny was recently quoted as saying, "I never expected to wind up in the Hall of Fame when I started playing golf. I played for the love of the game and to compete to win."
Knowing Lanny and his attitude about winning, I believe him. If you were playing for $1 Nassau bet I'm sure that he would try just as hard to beat you. That makes a great Ryder Cup player.
Lanny Wadkins will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame on November 2, 2009, in St. Augustine at the World Golf Village. Visit there soon to see his golfing memorabilia. Congratulations, Lanny.
