There is a great 36-hole resort just off I-4, southwest of Orlando, called ChampionsGate. The Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate offers top notch rooms, service and golf at this facility and golfers from all over the world use this as their base when visiting Orlando.
The Del Webb Father-Son Challenge has been held here for several years. If you are in the Orlando area during the event, you should treat yourself to a trip out to see the well-known group of golf champions play along side their sons (or grandsons or daughters).
Fathers such as Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Craig Stadler, Mark O’Meara, Tom Lehman and grandfather Arnold Palmer make up a prestigious list of players to follow. Their sons may outdrive them, but the dads still know how to score.
Held on the International Course, designed by Greg Norman (who also plays in this event with his son), this layout has the flavor of a links course of Scotland or Ireland.
ChampionsGate is also the World Headquarters for David Ledbetter’s Golf Academy.
Raymond Floyd has made a habit of winning the event (a five-time champion, alternating between his sons Robert and Ray, Jr.). Jack Nicklaus and his son Gary beat the Floyds in a playoff in 1999 or the Floyds would have a sixth win. My friend Larry Nelson has won twice, once with son Drew (who regularly caddies for Larry on the Champions PGA Tour) and this year with son Josh. Bob Tway and son Kevin played well and finished in second place, making this two years in a row.
The other 18-hole layout, the National course, is a wonderful track as well with its winding route through the pines and citrus tree groves. When you come to Orlando, be sure to schedule time to play these courses.
