| Palm Beach Eats | |||||
| Asked by vicki on June 23, 2009 | |||||
| Q: where to eat in palm beach or nearby..my mother always goes to the same places, please help.. love seafood, meats, pasta, and spanish. coming from new york as you already know we are hard to please.... thank you | |||||
|
A: Welcome to Florida--and welcome to Palm Beach. You don't say which places your mother already frequents or your price range, so I'll give you a few options here. One spectacular spot--Cafe Boulud at Brazilian Court Hotel. Chef Zach Bell was a James Beard Award finalist, and that nod is well deserved. The courtyard is a wonderful place to enjoy any meal, but I've especially liked the Saturday brunch there, so relaxed and leisurely. 301 Australian Ave., Palm Beach. 561-655-7740. For a fun tasting experience, check out Clematis Social in West Palm Beach. Sharing several small dishes is encouraged -- you've got lots of tastes to choose from, and the sharing really does encourage conversation. 223 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach. 561-655-6520 For some Nuevo Latino, have a meal at Cabana Las Palmas, also in West Palm on Clematis. There's a great variety on the menu. 18 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach. 561-833-4773 And if you're visiting right now, I've just learned that it's Palm Beach Restaurant month (June) -- three-course lunches for $20.09 and three-course dinners for $35. (Tax, drinks and tips extra). Check the web site for the participating restaurants (Cafe Boulud is one of them..). Eat well. |

| Great Values in St. Augustine? | |||||
| Asked by missy bryant on June 18, 2009 | |||||
| Q: we are going to St. Augustine with two kids ,and not alot of money!! do you know any cheap places to eat? | |||||
|
A: MIssy, Thanks for stopping to ask your question. Here are a few spots you and your family should enjoy. I've tried to keep it to places with plenty of less-than-$10 meal choices. Also, as you drive around the area, keep your eyes open for those "Early Bird" specials--eat a late lunch/early dinner (often 4 to 6 p.m.) and maybe get by on two meals a day--leaves you more time to play in the surf and the sand. Mango Mango's Beachside Bar and Grill Casual atmosphere, families welcome. Check the website for two different locations. Matanzas Innlet Restaurant This is a classic Old-Florida seafood restaurant. Prices can reach well beyond that $10 point, but there are still loads of options, and for the atmosphere alone, you should check this out. 8805 A1A South St. Augustine Cruisers Grill gets a lot Best Burger nods in the area--another great, casual family spot with satisfying food. Check the website for Cruisers' three different locations in the area. |

| Elegant Dining Orlando | |||||
| Asked by Gayle on June 11, 2009 | |||||
| Q: My husband and I will be celebrating our Fiftiety Wedding Anniversary. We want to go have an elegant atmosphere dining experience with music in the Orlando area. What is your recommendation? | |||||
|
A: I love the fact that some of the nation's top chefs have decided to open top-notch restaurants in the Orlando area. In fact, the first article I did for VISITFLORIDA.com was all about the fact that you don't have to subsist on corn dogs and smoked turkey legs in the resort parks. Some I didn't talk about in that story: Grand Floridian Victoria and Albert's Go for the special chef's table or just enjoy the romantic atmosphere of the main dining room. White Wolf Cafe is also a "top ten gem" in Orlando. Romantic atmosphere and its fans rave about the menu.1829 North Orange Avenue, 407-895-9911 And I'd just like to take the time to congratulate you on a wonderful anniversary. What a milestone--you must have many happy memories. Here's hoping you make many more memories ahead, starting with your romantic dinner in Orlando. I would love to hear back from you about where you decide to go. Eat well. Barb |

| Asked by sandy on June 08, 2009 | |||||
| Q: We are staying at Hawks Cay in July. Our two boys 12 and 9 like to eat real food. We are not a fast food family. Can you suggest some nice restaurants in the area we can try during the week. We plan on taking at least 2 day trips to key west. Years ago my husband and I found a great spot off the beaten path. We think it was called PEPEs. We had some great oysters there! can you help? | |||||
|
A: Sandy, Thanks for stopping by. First check out a few of my posts from the recent past, where I talk about some great Keys food. You can kind of trace my route: Mangrove Mike's Keys Fisheries B.O.'s Fish Wagon Sinfully Delicious Desserts Hawks Cay chefs do a fabulous job, too, but don't miss out on Green Turtle Inn in Islamorada--Green Turtle won a Keys "Iron Chef" competition I judged a year and a half ago...some great food. Have fun and eat well. |

| Italian? European Bakery? Fresh Fish Market? All in Fort Lauderdale: Of course. | |||||
| Asked by Victoria Brooks on June 08, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Where can we get true Italian deli ham (cotto)in Fort Lauderdale? Also is there a true European bakery?Does Fort Lauderdale have a fresh fish market? | |||||
|
A: Here are the places I would send you--you'll need a car, but the drives are easy. For Italian good, I hope, cotto, try Laurenzo's Italian Market in North Miami Beach. The cases there are filled with meats from all over the place, especially good Italian specialty meats. (16385 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach. 305-945-6381) The other place to check out is Doris' Italian Market and Bakery, with a location in Hollywood (as well as Plantation, Boca Raton, Coral Springs and Pembroke Pines). Meats, cheeses, groceries, baked goods--another good spot to start your search. 2424 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood. 954-921-9647). For a truly lovely European bakery experience, head to Croissan'Time on Federal Highway, just north of Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The owner is from France and has been baking magic for years. Fresh baked goods come out of the ovens all day long, and there is a great cup of coffee to be had there, too. (1201 North Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale, 954-565-8555.) For fish, try heading down to the docks along A1A in Fort Lauderdale (where charters head out) mid- to late afternoon--if you see a captain cleaning a catch, it's worth checking with him/her to see if the fish is already spoken for. If not, you may be able to buy some fish caught a few hours earlier. If the unknown nature of that venture is too much, head up to Pop's Fish Market in Deerfield Beach. The fish is fresh in the cases, but you can ask what came in that morning. You may even get lucky and find something that you just don't see in a supermarket case. And if you're hungry while you're picking up your order, this is the place to buy a fish and chips lunch--get the cod. You'll be very happy. (131 W. Hillsboro Blvd., Deerfield Beach. 954-427-1331) |

| Farmers' Markets, South Florida | |||||
| Asked by Max Lent on June 04, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Are there public food markets or street markets in South Florida? | |||||
|
A: I will give you two of my favorite haunts. Every Sunday, try Josh's Organic Market, held on the "Broadwalk" in Hollywood--at the beach right where Hollywood Boulevard ends (Ocean Walk Mall). I've gotten great produce there, talked with farmers about the produce and walked away happy every time. Also, head out to Homestead and Robert is Here. Local area farmers bring their produce into Robert's stand. You can read more about Robert is Here on Jill Martin's family blog. (Robert closes for all of September and October). |

| Q: We are staying on South Ponte Vedra Beach. Any dining in the area. | |||||

A: Here are a few spots...You don't say when you'll be in town, so I hope this is reaching you in time. Pusser's In Ponte Vedra makes for a nice, casual afternoon meal. Have a scenic meal at Lulu's Waterfront Grille. Also check out the family-owned and operated restuarant, Barbara Jean's Restaurant, a small, southern coastal chain (six locations, according to the website). Most of all, eat well! |

| Seafood in Apalachicola | |||||
| Asked by Doris Holzheimer on June 03, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Two questions: Can you suggest a seafood restaurant in Apalachicola that really treats the ingredients with respect?I had a wonderful childhood visit to Chalet Suzanne and have heard that it no longer is a culinary destination. Can you comment?Thank you.Doris Holzheimer | |||||
|
A: I was just in the area recently and think you'll have great luck with the places I've been--I only just put up a blog post about Pirates Restaurant in Carrabelle, where they know how to do an incredible fish fry (crispy, not greasy) with fish you can bring in--or the fish they've brought in themselves. The roasted oysters were barely touched and served up so simply as to be wonderful. I will be writing more shortly, but Cafe Momi is the new place at Gibson Inn. I recommend asking what is locally caught and going with that. Also check out That Place in Apalach (the locals' name for Apalachicola) or That Place on 98 (both owned by the same folks). Again, stick with the locally caught fish as simply prepared as possible and you should be on safe ground. At any of these place, also inquire about the local clams, a new and growing industry in the area. I also suggest asking local residents who will offer up any number of names and places off the beaten track--let them know what you are looking for and they'll give you even more spots to check out. Chalet Suzanne is certainly still a destination, and while I've not dined there recently, I still put it into the iconic Florida dining destination category. Know you are going for a bit of history, the atmosphere and the meal, which reflects old classics, Chalet Suzanne signature dishes and the things the regulars have come to expect. There are some places that are always worth a stop. If you decide the menu isn't what you are after, still make it a stop for drinks and a stroll around the grounds for old time's sake. Eat well, eat local and eat some Apalachicola seafood! |

| Eating Vegetarian in Florida? | |||||
| Asked by lisa saxon on May 31, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Is there many places around florida that cater for vegetarians? i also don't eat fish. | |||||
|
A: Of course there are places! While we brag about our seafood, we also brag about the quality and variety of our dining options near and far. At just about any restaurant you visit, you'll be able to find enough side dishes (salads, vegetable choices, etc.) to make up a meal. And don't be shy about asking your server about whether or not the chef can create a vegetable platter for you. These days, a lot of places make sure to have a vegetarian option--even, on occasion, vegan options. Two spots that come to mind are Pizza Fusion, a Florida-based pizza chain that uses organic ingredients and offers plenty of vegetarian options as well as gluten-free options (I blogged about Pizza Fusion last summer), and Sublime in Fort Lauderdale, a vegan restaurant with gourmet choices. | Tropical Fruit for Sale and Purchase?
| Asked by Allen Allison on May 14, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Where can you pick or buy tropical fruit around Tampa or Orlando? | |||||
|
A: There are few "you-picks" left, especially in the more crowded markets of our state--but Orlando still seems to have a fair few places. Check out Pick You Own: Florida, the website--scroll down for Lake County, which is in the Orlando area. You'll find all sorts of fruits available for picking and, if you don't feel like working that hard, for purchase. Find Tampa locations on the same site, but on this page. You don't say when you'll be in Florida, but we do have fruit coming into season year-round, so you should find something no matter what time of year you visit. Of course, always look for local farmers' markets. Right now in South Florida, mangos are flooding into the markets from backyards all around. You should be able to buy Florida-grown mangos even in the local grocery store. Hope this helps--have a great visit and good eating! Barb |

| Dining in Daytona | |||||
| Asked by nicole bird on May 11, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Where to you suggest we eat in Daytona Beach. We like places others may not have heard of. We also have 2 picky teenagers to feed so what do you think? Thanks Nicole | |||||
|
A: Hmm. Picky teens AND unusual dining--two things that don't always go hand in hand--I know. I've been there. That said, there are still places where everyone can be pleased. First up is Martini's Chop House. I like the look of this because of the small plates, a current trend and a good one, if you ask me--everyone can get a taste of what they like. They cook according to the seasons at Martini's, so the menu changes daily, but I think it's a good bet. 1815 South Ridgewood Ave. 386-763-1090 For a far more casual experience directly on the beach, head to Ocean Deck, where you'll find plenty of seafood, sandwiches and entrees--again, a wide variety and a large menu where you'll likely find something for all palates. 127 South Ocean Ave. 386-253-5224 Last up, why not try another local spot, Caribbean Jack's, a waterfront dining spot. Again, a large menu, a great view, a place unique to Daytona. 721 Ballough Road. 386-523-3000. And I would love to hear about your dining experiences--how these work for you and whether or not you discover something you want to share with our readers here at VISITFLORIDA.com/experts/dining. Feel free to get back in touch. Eat well! |

| Local dining on Sanibel/Fort Myers Beach | |||||
| Asked by Linda Sexsmith on May 08, 2009 | |||||
| Q: We are staying at Sanibel Harbor Spa and Resort - I know they have great restaurants - but do you have any suggestions for more local flair - Sanibel or Fort Myers Beach? Thanks you | |||||
|
A: I recently was over that way and had a really nice lunch at Doc Ford's on Sanibel, which I blogged about here. Friendly local atmosphere, plenty of families and a menu that has something for everyone. Other popular spots: Over Easy Cafe (630 Tarpon Bay Road, Sanibel)--a popular breakfast stop, also open for lunch. Lighthouse Cafe (362 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel)--This spot lays claim to "the world's best breakfast." Only you can judge for yourself. Also open for lunch and dinner. The Island Cow (2163 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel) draws a big crowd for its food and its whimsical atmosphere. Sanibel is such a wonderful place--enjoy the relaxing, the beaches and birdwatching and, of course: Eat well. Barb |

| Vegan Restaurant in the Miami Area? | |||||
| Asked by Alexis on May 04, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Will be visiting Miami soon - Know of a really good vegan restaurant with nice ambiance for dining in? | |||||
|
A: Alexis, I have to send you north a bit to Fort Lauderdale--It's a simple drive up I-95 North to Sunrise Blvd., then east towards the ocean. When Federal Highway peels away from Sunrise, follow it north to Sublime at 1431 North Federal Highway. Sublime offers vegan food, an inventive menu and a lovely atmosphere. (954-539-9000) I know you asked for ambiance and dining in, but I also want to make sure you know about Pizza Fusion for quick, casual fare. Pizza Fusion offers organic pizzas and has several vegan choices on its menu. There is a North Miami location at 14815 Biscayne Blvd. (305-405-6700) |

| Treasure Island Dining | |||||
| Asked by Jill on April 30, 2009 | |||||
| Q: My boyfriend and I are heading down to Treasure Island, FL for Memeorial Day. We're looking for some good places to go out. What kind of night life is around? Any good places? | |||||
|
A: I encourage you to read back through the questions list and my blog here for Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater suggestions, all of which are close to you in Treasure Island. You've given me a nice opportunity to add to the lists, too, so here are a few more suggestions. Dockside Dave's gets high marks from its fans, with plenty of locally caught fresh fish (try the grouper sandwich) and two locations in Madeira Beach and St. Pete Beach. (727-392-9399). Also try Ted Peter's Smoked Fish, an iconic restaurant in the area. Not much more than a fish shack, Ted Peter's great smoked fish is a favorite for many visitors, for whom a trip to the area is not complete without a stop here. Pick any of the smoked fish specialties, and definitely get some German potato salad to go with it. 1305 Pasadena Avenue, South, St. Petersburg. 727-381-7931 For something upscale, you might want to consider The Pearl, a small, elegant spot (right in Treasure Island) with an eclectic menu. It's gotten great reviews, although it has revamped its menu slightly recently. Do check the website for current menu options and call ahead if you've got questions. 727-360-9151 |

| Gluten-free Travel in Florida? | |||||
| Asked by Barb on April 29, 2009 | |||||
| Q: I get frequent questions about gluten-free travel in Florida. It's definitely a challenge, but after addressing several of these questions, I thought I'd post my recent answer to a reader that brings together all of the information collected to date. | |||||
|
A: First and foremost, I have this link in my files--it is definitely a great place to start. A site that includes reviews of hotels, restaurants and more around the world: Gluten-free Travels We also have Whole Foods markets here, which are very aware of gluten-free needs and stockpile a good number of gluten-free products--check the store's website. To locate stores near you, get the zip code/postal code of your accommodations. The site should be able to locate the nearest store I also found this by googling: Orlando Gluten-free And this: Orlando Gluten-Free Examiner I also recommend finding out locally about farmers' markets in the area, where you can buy plenty of fresh, often organic, produce. Last but not least, here are some comments from another VISITFLORIDA.com reader with children who have celiac disease: We went to Orlando and visited most of the parks. I would have to say that in Universal, there is maybe only 1 restaurant "Confisco Grill" that could provide food that we could eat (grilled chicken breast with a salad/oil & vinegar dressing). Disney managed to have one place that we went to "Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe" that provided gluten free buns for either their grilled chicken breast (considered gluten free) or their all beef hot dogs. If we had wanted fries, they would have baked them for us, but we'd have to wait 20 minutes. Most of the parks we went to, we brought food for ourselves, the others ate what was available. We did go to the Rainforest Cafe in Downtown Disney for dinner and the chef was brought out to let us know what we could eat, so that helped! Thankfully we chose to stay off the park resorts because we knew our food options were limited. Therefore, we stayed at a suites hotel which had a full kitchen and found this great grocery store off the I4 called "Whole Foods" at 8003 Turkey Lake Road. They had more gluten free food that I could imagine. That provided us with snacks, cold cuts, desserts, pasta, etc. for most of our meals. As for the only restaurant that I must point out, it was the Outback Steakhouse next to the Orlando Premium Outlet Mall on Vineland Avenue. It actually had a gluten free menu that we could choose from. My 2 children who are Celiac thought the food was awesome! It was also helpful that I packed an entire suitcase for the trip with our cereals, snack food and bagels. I hope this helps someone else out next time?! Hope you have great travels, great food and that these links prove useful to you. If you find anything you'd like to share back, keep my email; I would love to hear your comments on the links. | South Beach on a Budget?
| Asked by Erick on April 20, 2009 | |||||
| Q: My girlfriend and I are planning a Trip to Miami on south beach in July. Could you possibly give us some places to eat at that are nice but not pricey. We're on a limited budget =o Thanks | |||||
|
A: Glad to hear you are heading to Florida for some down time--of course, we all know it's a wonderful place to relax AND to play--and, if you read me often enough, to EAT. That said, you can get caught up by hitting only high-end places, which won't fit your budget-minded needs. Here are a few tips and a few places where you can go an not break the bank. Tip #1: Breakfast on South Beach: Deals as low as $5 per person for full breakfasts. Here's the thing--it's a competitive market out there, and breakfast is a time when restaurants compete extra heavily to fill their seats. Take a stroll down Ocean Avenue before you have breakfast. At least on weekdays, I am amazed at the $5 choices...you can't go five steps without a host inviting you to have a seat and enjoy the breakfast deal of the day. Most of these end mid-morning, so head out around 8 or 9 a.m. to make your selection. Tip #2: Eat two meals a day instead of three. This is often my strategy on vacation. I have a late leisurely breakfast which tides me over until dinner. Because I've saved money on lunch, I feel I can spend a bit more for my dinner. Tip #3: Check out Epicure Market for some takeout. Granted, this is a gourmet market, and prices are above what you might pay in your home market, but it's far cheaper than eating out and Epicure has an enormous selection of prepared dishes to take away for a picnic in a park or on the beach. 1656 Alton Road, 305-672-1861 Okay, enough with the tips. Here are a few places worth knowing about: Cafe at Books and Books on Lincoln Road. Books and Books is one of the few independently owned bookstores left. Browse the books, then take a seat at one of the outdoor tables on Lincoln Road. The menu is reasonable and the people watching divine. 933 Lincoln Road, 305-448-9599 Consider Puerto Sagua for some great Cuban food at reasonable prices. This spot at 700 Collins Ave. gets high marks for the food and the prices are all reasonable. 305-673-1115 11th Street Diner is an authentic old diner transplanted to Miami Beach. Traditional diner fare, our own South Beach colorful cast of characters and reasonable prices: what more could we ask? 1065 Washingtn Ave., 305-534-6373 As you walk--and you should walk everywhere because parking is a problem, and the streets are entertaining all on their own--keep your eyes open for the smaller places. South Beach is still a very residential area, and you know the locals eat out--so when you're in one of these places, ask them about other can't-miss places for your budget. |

| More Dining Near Destin/Pananma City | |||||
| Asked by Susan on April 15, 2009 | |||||
| Q: We will be staying in the highway 30A area (between Destin & Panama City) for a week in June and would like to get some suggestions for restaurants that are family-friendly, but yet not your run-of-the-mill chain type. Of course, we are vacationing on a budget, so that is also a factor. Thank you! | |||||
|
A: I recently answered a similar question, but yours has the added spin of family- and budget-friendly, so I went back to my sources for two more fun finds: Senor Mojitos at the Base of the 331 Bridge (850-267-2622), Santa Rosa Beach. Senor Mojitos gets consistently high raves for its waterfront view, great oysters and blue crabs. Of course, with that name, count on a good selection of Mexican fare. A Kids' Menu offers a few choices for $4 to $7. Next, I think Stinky's Fish Camp (4994 County Rd. A, Santa Rosa Beach) is a must. Aside from the name, I love that their "basket lunches" (available til 2 p.m.) are $12 and under. Raw oysters are available all day. At dinner, baskets come with slaw and fries and are $14 across the board. Lots of local flavors here (including frogs' legs). Read the question from April 12 for five more Panama City/Destin area recommendations. Happy eating. |

| Barbecue Around the State | |||||
| Asked by Michael Larsen on April 15, 2009 | |||||
| Q: We are a family (3 pax) going to Florida in July - visiting Miami, Orlando, Saratoga, Naples, Key Largo and Key west. We would like to try out Seafood and barbacue - any pointers where to go Best regards Michael LarsenDenmark | |||||
|
A: Michael, Thanks for stopping to ask about where to dine. Please read through the blog and my questions/answers here for lots of info already posted, especially about seafood...but you do ask specifically about BBQ, which I haven't addressed much except in a March 22 answer to a question about Southern food in the Naples area. (Check that one out for a few good BBQ shops). BBQ here in the States gets a lot of discussion--sauced, smoked, rubbed, pulled? Pork? Beef? Ribs? I'll give you my choice: dry-rubbed pulled pork. But that's just me! Let me pull up a few worthy of notice around the state. In the Miami area, a lot of people make the drive to Tom Jenkins Bar-B-Q in Fort Lauderdale. Pork, ribs, beef, chicken, collard greens...the expected menu, and people rave about it. 1236 S. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. 954-522-5046 In Orlando, many are loyal to Bubbalou's Bodacious BBQ, a local chain that gets raves even from Zagat. You can dine in or take out, so consider a picnic in one of Orlando's great parks. Call or go to the website for Orlando locations. 407-423-1212. In Key West, I'd head to Green Parrot Meteor Smokehouse, filled with lots of local Keys charm, pulled pork and reportedly, great side dishes. 404 Southard, 305-294-5602. In Key Largo, consider BJ's Bar-B-Q--aside from typical barbecue menu, they offer home-baked bread and fried onion rings, an indulgence, for sure. There's a kids' menu, too. Mile Maker 102.5, 305-451-0900 Last but not least, Saratoga--I will send you to Big D's in Palatka...because they serve fried corn on the cob, a dish you don't see often, but one I try everywhere I go if I see it. The menu includes brisket, pork, ribs and chicken. With those offerings, I think I'd have to go for the combo plates, trying for some of each. Highway 17 North, Palatka. 386-328-6881 |

| Asked by Carol on April 12, 2009 | |||||
| Q: We are visiting Panama City Beach in May. Any suggestions for dining?Thanks,Carol | |||||
|
A: Recommendations abound for great seafood in Panama City. Start with some fresh oysters.Hunt's Oyster Bar serves up oysters any which way, as well as a wide range of entrees from ribeye to tuna steaks to gator. Great local spot for good food. 1150 Beck Ave., Panama City, 850-763-9645 Foodies all agree Mama Cole's/Big Mama's in Panama City serves up some great soul food. 580 Harmon Avenue, Panama City, 850-784-6009 Andy's Flour Power might be a nice choice for a freshly-baked breakfast. Small breakfast menu, but try the croissants. Open for lunch, too, and the Cuban sandwich is supposed to be a good one. 3123 Thomas Drive, Panama City, 32408, 850-230-0014 If you are looking to go upscale, white tablecloth, try 30 Degree Blue at the Marriott Bay Point Resort & Spa. The menu is loaded with seafood choices and the setting is elegant. The name? The place is 30 degress north latitude overlooking the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico (well, of the Bay Point Marina, at least). 3900 Marriott Drive, Suite G, 850-236-1115 If you are willing to drive (about 35 miles), check out Nicks On the Bayou in Freeport, with plenty of crab dishes, a great spot with a good view and plenty of seafood to go around. 7585 West Highway 20, Freeport. 850-835-2222 Please call ahead to all these spots to check their schedules. |

The card offers a free meal for a child with each paid for adult meal and is accepted at more than 50 Orlando area restaurants. Thanks for bringing it to my attention--I may be blogging about it soon for my readers. Barb |

| Key Largo: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner | |||||
| Asked by linda on April 08, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Visiting Key Largo for a week, starting April 19......any suggestions for breakfast,lunch or dinner?? | |||||
|
A: I love Key Largo. It feels so close yet so far away. I'm going to start you out with a lunch stop on your way down: Alabama Jack's on Card Sound Road. A casual yet "Keys-y" place right on the water. It's worth a stop for some refreshment and one of their fresh fish sandwiches or the conch fritters. It gets me in the right frame of mind. I've had a really great lunch, too, at Hobo's Cafe right on Route 1 at Mile Marker (MM) 101.69. For any meal of the day, you might want to check out the Key Largo Conch House (MM 100.2)--charming surroundings, free wifi (if you choose to stay connected) with purchase, and locals and visitors alike becoming regulars. Head to Sundowner's On the Bay (MM104) for a drink at sunset, a menu that include plenty of local seafood and a nice selection of vegetarian items, too. I highly recommend striking up a conversation or two with the people you meet on your trip and ask them where they head, too--there's a true friendliness people living and visiting the Keys show. Maybe it's the fact they are in paradise? Whatever the reason, I've always found great suggestions from the people dining at the next table. If you find a place you want to share, please let me hear back from you, so I can pass it on here, too. Now go relax and have some fun! And eat well. Barb |

| Best Place to Eat in Florida? | |||||
| Asked by Katie on April 07, 2009 | |||||
| Q: One thing that we are looking for on a vacation is a great dining experience. We are wanting to stay on a beach in Florida, so which is the best city to stay in to get the best dining? | |||||
|
A: Katie, First, thank you so much for stopping to read the blog and pose your question. Second: I don't really have to choose, do I? The best city for dining, I mean...Florida cities span the entire spectrum of dining, and in any one city you can find great food at a little hole in the wall or a roving taco stand as well as some of the most cutting edge culinary adventures you'll find anywhere. If you're in Apalachicola, I'm sending you to eat oysters, of course. In Tarpon Springs? That's for Greek dining. Coming to any coast during stone crab season? What I encourage you to do is to look at the whole package as far as your needs--family, romantic couples week, adventure, golf, shopping--check all of our expert blogs here--pick any one of our beach cities and come back to me with your question--I will do my best to send you to places you can't find anywhere else but here. Sorry to be so broad, but I'm proud of the dining I find in all our cities. Let me know where you're headed and I'll find some great spots to send you. Eat well, Barb |

| Stone Crab fishing | |||||
| Asked by Mary Alvelo on April 03, 2009 | |||||
| Q: I am trying to find out where I can go fishing for stone crab with a guide. | |||||
|
A: Mary, Thanks for your question. One thing I found out when taping the stone crab video for VISITFLORIDA.com is that there are not guided stone crab boats the way deep sea fishing boats head out with paying passengers. Take a look at the video, when I did get to go out--it was a long day and hard work. But towards the end of the video I do mention that you can trap crabs with a recreational fishing license, which you can get from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. If you go this route, please be very familiar with the rules and regulations regarding quantities, size, etc. The penalties are stiff for violations. Florida Sportsman offers details. |

| Special Events for Chef/Husband's Birthday in Southwest Florida? | |||||
| Asked by Lynn on March 24, 2009 | |||||
| Q: My husband is a chef and his b-day is in April, do you know of any events in Southwest Fla, coming up he could attend? We live in Ft Myers , so maybe a 2 hour drive away. Any ideas welcome | |||||
|
A: Two unique events come to mind, Lynn--One event I've blogged about, the brunch coming up on April 19 at Schnebly Redlands Winery, a place that is intriguing to any food and wine person. I love the Redlands--major farming still does go on in South Florida, not too far from the heart of Miami. The Schnebly's have taken fruit and changed it into wine at their winery--they are spectacular hosts, enthusiastic about their product and the bounty of South Florida. The other spot I'd suggest is from my video: Paradise Farms, another dining experience unique to Florida and so special to anyone interested in the farm-to-table movement. Visit the Paradise Farms website to make reservations for Dinner in Paradise--they'll be hosting dinners on April 12 and April 26 (that may be the last dinner of the season). |

| Southern Hospitality in Naples/Marco Island | |||||
| Asked by David on March 22, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Visiting Naples/Marco Island area and Anna Maria Island April in early April. Recommended resturants for Southern Food. | |||||
|
A: This being Naples and Marco Island, seafood dominates most menus, and I didn't come up with a "deep South"-style spot for you. But some picking and choosing can get you a good, southern-style meal. Here are a few possibilities: Pelican Bend's fried chicken has a good reputation, but be prepared for a wait--and you might as well enjoy the scenery while you wait, right over the water, sunsets and all. Try the peanut butter pie for dessert. Pelican Bend 219 Capri Blvd., Marco Island, 239-394-3452 I like the look of the menu at Porky's Last Stand, where the house specialty is baby back ribs, and the restaurant makes its own barbecue sauces. 701 Bald Eagle Drive, Marco Island, 239-394-8727. MichaelBob's Championship Ribs gets Naples News' Best in SW Florida--an extensive barbecue/rib menu, plenty of sides to please and two locations makes this look like a worthwhile stop. 371 Airport Pulling Rd. North, Naples, 239-643-2877 915 N. Collier Blvd, Marco Island, 239-394-0302 |

| Mexican in Delray Beach | |||||
| Asked by Aimee on March 17, 2009 | |||||
| Q: I am going to Delray Beach in 2 weeks. Can you suggest any nice Mexican restaurants in the area for a great night out with great ambience and great food? | |||||
|
A: I think you might love Moquila in Boca Raton. Nice menu, nice atmosphere and great margaritas. And an easy drive from Delray Beach. For a more casual atmosphere, you could try La Bamba, right in Delray. This is a small local chain, and it's been in business since 1988, so it must be doing something right. Expect the classics here--straight up, tasty and filling. And if you just need a great lunch from a great taqueria, pleas stop by Tacos Al Carbon, just north of you in Lake Worth. This is little more than a roadside rest stop (but it is more)--the food is authentic, delicious and inexpensive. Maybe a great lunch one day. (Not the ambience you are looking for probably) Moquila 99 SE Mizner Blvd, #114, Boca Raton 561-394-9990 La Bamba 4285 West Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach 561-499-7996 Tacos al Carbon 4420 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth 561-432-8474 |

| Easter Dining near Deerfield Beach | |||||
| Asked by Joe Montelle on March 14, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Hi Barb, I'll be in Deerfield beach for Easter and I need your expertise to find a good place for dinner. We enjoy steak,seafood etc and we don't mind driving so anywhere in the greater Ft. Lauderdale area would be fine.Thanks, JM | |||||
|
A: Not sure if you're looking for place specifically for Easter dinner or not, so I'll try to include spots I know will be open and then some that you might just want to try because they're worth the trip. For seafood, and because you don't mind heading into Fort Lauderdale, I love 3030 Ocean, which I've blogged about here. Great food no matter what you order--Chef Dean James Max is all about the sustainable seafood movement and takes great care in the choices he makes for his menu. His Chef de Cuisine happens to be Paula da Silva, currently one of the contenders on Hell's Kitchen, so if you're a fan, you might make the stop just to get there (we locals want her to win, of course). Because it's part of the Marriott, it should be open for dinner on Easter Sunday (please call ahead and confirm with all these spots). 3030 Holiday Drive, Fort Lauderdale. 954-765-3030. Head north to Delray Beach for one of the most talked-about restaurants: 32 East. Elegant atmosphere, creative menu and plenty of fresh seafood here, too--I love Atlantic Avenue in the heart of Delray. It's a regular Restaurant Row, and there are enough shops open for browsing or window shopping, too. 32 East Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach. 561-276-7868. In Palm Beach, you might want to head to Cafe Boulud at Brazilian Court Hotel. Chef Zach Bell is on the short list of nominations for a James Beard award. You can dine inside or outside near the fountain. I love the old world elegance of the place and the menu is topnotch. 331 South County Road, Palm Beach. 561-655-6060. At Cafe Martorano in Fort Lauderdale, owner and chef Steve Martorano loves to build on its Italian reputation and its Sopranos connection (Martorano cooked for the cast of the Sopranos). Classic Italian dishes with plenty of great red sauce (Martorano's sauce is so good he bottled it and sells it on store shelves). The no reservations approach could lead to a wait, it's that popular. Family-friendly early (6 p.m. dinner times), more clubby later, so plan accordingly. 3343 East Oakland Park Blvd. 954-561-2554. |

| Vero Beach Area Dining? | |||||
| Asked by Marissa on March 11, 2009 | |||||
| Q: I will be in Vero Beach April 11-18th celebrating an anniversary with my boyfriend and we are looking for a nice place to eat but we want something unique and different.. ive heard of places where you can eat while dolphins swim up next to you and crazy things like that. We dont want to go extremely far away though.. maybe an hour tops. | |||||
|
A: Here are a few choices in Vero Beach and one in Jensen Beach: A lovely special occasion spot is Maison Martinique at the Caribbean Court Boutique Hotel. A very French menu, lovely atmosphere with romantic indoor and outdoor dining. 1601 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach. 772-231-7299 For a decidedly different atmosphere, check out Waldo's Restaurant. The restaurant likes the term "beachcomber ambiance." It was originally a beach house and has been converted into the restaurant, so there's a lot of charm about it--it's part of the Driftwood Resort complex. The menu includes plenty of fresh fish choices at reasonable prices--the dinner entrees are the only menu items that break the $20 mark (a seafood extravaganza goes for $26--keep in mind that price may fluctuate with the market). 3150 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach. 772-231-0550 Another beachfront choice is Ocean Grill. Its history dates back to the 1920s, and it has managed to survive more than a storm or two--it's a driftwood-colored building on pilings right on the water. Of course seafood is the focus of the menu--entrees run from about $20 to $27 (there are beef, pork and chicken choices available, too), and there's an extensive lunch menu (and kids' menu), too. 1050 Sexton Plaza, Vero Beach 772-231-5409 If you do decide to take a drive for dinner, you might consider Dolphin Bar Shrimp House, right on the water in Jensen Beach, about 30 miles away from Vero. Great seafood, great views, cozy atmosphere. 1401 NE Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach. 772-781-5136 Phone: (772) 781-51 |

A: I have to send you to Calypso, a small place in Pompano Beach, just north of Fort Lauderdale. The owners know their way around a conch fritter--and so much more. The restaurant is in an unassuming little strip mall on Cypress Road, but worth the drive. Locals, from suits to hard hats, flock here for lunch. I've enjoyed a lunch at the bar. | Seafood in Cocoa Beach
| Asked by Jennifer on February 26, 2009 | |||||
| Q: We will be visiting the Cocoa Beach beach area. We would like to go to a great seafood open air restaurant. Any ideas? | |||||
|
A: Great question--because there are so many possibilities. You most certainly can dine well on seafood in Cocoa Beach, which is as it should be. Here are a few possibilities: Fat Snook "Seafood, Steak, Wine & Ale" The seafood choices are plenty and inventive, with two daily specials (market prices)--There's a photo on the website of herb-encrusted wild coho salmon that I'm ready to try NOW. Entree prices range from $24 to $40 (for the 28-ounce rib-eye). Fat Snook is a local favorite--plenty of awards from its fans. Fat Snook 2464 S. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach 321-784-1190 For a more casual experience, try Dixie Crossroads, a very popular place, so plan ahead. They don't do reservations but they do take calls for "preferred seating," which should help move the wait along. Check the website for coupons before you go. Dixie Crossroads 1475 Garden St., Titusville 321-268-5000 One more popular spot: Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill with great views and plenty of fresh fish choices from fish and chips for $12.50 to a combo seafood plate for $20. Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill 610 Glen Cheek Drive, Port Canaveral. 321-784-4533 |

| Dining in Wesley Chapel | |||||
| Asked by Wanda Thompson on February 17, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Connie, We are coming to Wesley Chapel for a family members birthday party, in the middle of April. We are from Southwest VA., a long way from the ocean and fresh fish. What would be your suggestion for some really good fish and seafood in that area that is also reasonably priced? We are planning a day in Tampa as well. Any suggestions for that area? Thanks Wanda | |||||
|
A: Wanda, Wesley Chapel is a small town, but if you love fresh fish AND you love sushi, you might like Bonsai Japanese Sushi, a Tampa restaurant that has just opened in Wesley Chapel. The Tampa location gets high marks from its fans. In addition to sushi selections, the restaurant also offers teriyaki dishes and udon (noodle) soups and many, many other cooked dishes. Sounds like a fun choice for your group. You might also enjoy Wolf's Den in Wesley Chapel, where the wolf-theme infuses every inch of decor. Breakfasts sound decadent and the Wild West Pizza pleased more than a few reviewers. As for Tampa, please read through the other questions on my blog; I've fielded plenty of questions about Tampa and even blogged a few spots in Tampa and Clearwater. | Top Notch Dining, Party of 12
| Asked by Enrique on February 07, 2009 | |||||
| Q: I am looking for a really top notch restaurant to dine on Orlando there is 12 of us and we are looking for the best in Chinese, meat or sea food with a good wine list. | |||||
|
A: Enrique, For fish, you cannot go wrong with Todd English's bluezoo, which I wrote up in an article for VISITFLORIDA.com. The freshest seafood, inventive touches, a fun setting at The Dolphin at Walt Disney World. Spice Modern Steakhouse gets great reviews and got Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence and Wine Enthusiast awards as well. MIng Court on International Drive could be fun for a large crowd. Ming bills itself as Oriental cuisine, so it does try to cover a lot of bases, and it does so with pleny of success. Food is tasty, the atmosphere is upscale but noisy and busy--energetic. My kids loved it. Great wine lists? I think you'd want to check with the restaurant first to see if it has wines that meet your expectations. Good luck and let me hear back from you about how your dinner turns out. |

Mario's in Lakeland gets good reviews as a family-run, family style Italian restaurant. A: I have only tried Shogun of the restaurants you've asked about--It's a fun, family-style restaurant with grill tables and good shows put on by the chefs as they cook--and it has an extensive and tasty sushi menu. I don't think you'll be disappointed with a visit to Shogun. You don't say exactly when you will be in Orlando, but a favorite place of mine is opening this spring in Orlando, Ra Sushi. Very inventive, great atmosphere and deicious food. Check the website when you arrive to see if they have opened. A: Welcome to Florida for your celebrations! What a great place to be for this event, and what a great time of year to be here. I love the idea of visiting The River House in Palm Beach Gardens for your reception. The setting is lovely, and they certainly can accommodate private parties--they ask that the minimum be 30, but maybe they can work with your party for this. Here's contact information: The River House 2373 PGA Blvd Palm Beach Gardens (561) 694-1188 Another possibility is Seasons 52, a small but upscale chain of restaurants featuring seasonal foods (they sell themselves on the seasonal menus and the fact that everything menu item is under 475 calories). Seasons 52 accommodates groups, works on reasonably priced menus for groups and you can choose from a breakfast, lunch or dinner reception. Seasons 52 Intracoastal at PGA Blvd. 11611 Ellison Wilson Road Palm Beach Gardens (561) 625-5852 And finally, consider Ironwood Grille at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens--truly a beautiful setting, a great menu and they are ready to serve groups of any size--the dining room reconfigures in several ways for any size of group and several private rooms are available. A: Diane, A quick look at the map shows that roughly half-way between Estero and Orlando lands you in the greater Tampa area, where you'll find plenty of waterfront dining. You might consider Clearwater, St. Petersburg or Tampa itself. You don't mention price point, so I'll try to give you a range of choices. Casual: Rick's on The River in Tampa. This is a casual place with great baskets of fried fish overlooking the river in Tampa. Sit on the porch, enjoy your lunch, the river scenery and the relaxing atmosphere. Captain Al's Waterfront Grill and Bar in St. Petersburg is on the pier with plenty of outdoor dining and great water views of the bay. Lots of seafood choices on Captain Al's menu. Cafe Dufrain, on Harbour Island in Tampa, is a modern "American fusion" restaurant with elegant lunch options and plenty of waterviews. The menu is filled with dishes sampling flavors from America, Europe, the Mediterranean and South America. Something for everyone. Rick's on the River 2305 N. And any shows or highlights for that time frame which you may think will be of interest to us. Thank you for your help. Claudia

A: Of course there are great restaurants all up and down South Beach! And a tip for breakfast: there are great, early morning deals, so get up, have a stroll along A1A and enjoy a bargain breakfast (you can barely walk 10 feet without being invited in to enjoy a $5 breakfast). Okay--here are some choices for you: Table 8 (http://www.table8la.com/) at the Hotel de Soleil is Govind Armstrong's Florida venture. Food is fabulous and the setting is lovely. Ishq (http://www.ishqsouthbeach.com/) serves refined Indian cuisine on its outdoor patio. The owners are gracious hosts and the setting is so enjoyable. Casa Tua (http://www.casatualifestyle.com) gets consistenly high marks for its Northern Italian menu, its open-air atmosphere and its elegance La Sandwicherie (http://www.lasandwicherie.com/) is a less expensive option, a French deli with great sandwiches. The Cafe at Books and Books on Lincoln Road (a pedestrian walkway) is a great people watching spot. Good food, fair prices--after your meal head inside to browse one of the best independently-owned bookstores (http://www.booksandbooks.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp) anywhere. If you are venturing away from South Beach, please check out my blog entry about dining in the Design District (http://visitflorida.com/experts/dining/action.blog/id.978). It's not too far (with a car) and well worth the trip. There are daily specials, including something they call their "Beans Around the World Special." 2842 Dr. Martin Luther King St., N St. Petersburg Consciousness Blossoms gets rave reviews, too--not in St. Petersburg, but a half-hour drive North, in Palm Harbor (through Dunedin). Try the Neat Loaf. 3390 Tampa Rd., Palm Harbor (727)789-1931 Casa Tina (http://www.casatinas.com/index.html) If you are willing to drive, I love the look of this menu and the description of the restaurant. It's a Mexican place with a lot of vegetarian options in Dunedin, a short, pleasant drive north of St. Petersburg: 365 Main Street, Dunedin (727)734-9226 And don't forget, most popular organic grocery stores have takeout sections offering lots of vegetarian-friendly choices and seating areas. | Seafood Year-round in Florida? Of course!
| Asked by Helen on January 12, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Is fresh seafood available all year round in Florida? What are some authentic seafood restaurants that you would recommend as we will be in Sandestin over March break? | |||||
|
A: Helen, Thanks for visiting my dining blog here at VISITFLORIDA.com. You bet seafood is available year-round. There are seasons for when different fish are "running," and there are certainly seasons that control, for example stone crab (that season is October 15 to May 15) and lobster. If you really want to know what's in season when (the best way to decide which fish to order on any given day), check Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. (http://www.floridaconservation.org/) Here are some spots to check: The Crab Trap (several locations in the area) http://www.crabtrapdestin.com/main.htm The Back Porch http://www.theback-porch.com/ Pompano Joe's http://www.pompano-joes.com/ Acme Oyster House http://acmeoyster.com/ And when you find one spot you love, strike up a conversation with the folks at the next table--ask them where else they've eaten and what they recommend. Locals' recommendations are always a great way to go. Have fun and eat lots of Florida Seafood. Barb |

A: At Flamingo Joe's (http://flamingojoes.com/) you can get grilled or blackened seafood choices, peel and eat shrimp as well as the classic "fry baskets." 2304 Thomas Drive. (850)233-0600 Old Florida Fish House & Bar offers the standard fish fries as well, but also offers daily specials that are not all fried, and the restaurant also offers sushi--the other end of the spectrum. 5235 East County Hwy 30A Santa Rosa Beach (850) 534-3045 Mango Marley's in Mexico Beach (about 25 minutes away) has the standard (fried) offerings, but ask for grilled catch of the day. http://www.mangomarleys.com/index.html 850-648-5000 If you are heading down the west coast, please take a look through some older questions/answers here--there are loads of seafood suggestions all the way down to Naples. | Q: Can you give us some good places to eat in Ft. Myers for a family. We are on a budget but like to eat good food, not fast food. Also a list of good seafood resturants.Thanks
|
A: Here's a list that should get you and your family meals without breaking the bank: 1. Maria's Smokehouse This gets raves for great food at great prices. Home-cooked food, an all-you-can-eat fish fry. Casual atmosphere, no liquor license, but you can bring your own. 18550 San Carlos, Blvd. (239) 850-1446 2. Sasse's offers entrees from $10 up, but word is that they are so big, you can make another meal out of the takehome. No pizza, but big, wood-fired flatbreads are served up with dipping oil. 3651 Evans Ave # 101 (239) 278-5544 3. Buon Appetito for pizza and all things Italian. A bit out of the way in a shopping plaza, but lots of food for not a lot of price. 6314 Corporate Ct (239) 433-0117 4. Jimbo's in Cape Coral gets high marks, especially for breakfasts. 1604 SE 46th St, Cape Coral (239) 540-9533 5. Not in Fort Myers, but a short drive away in Naples, if you and the kids like Vietnamese food, Noodles Saigon gets rave reviews and give a lot of food--again, perhaps a takehome spot for you, especially if you're staying in a condo or a hotel room with a refrigerator. 13500 Tamiami Trail North #11, Naples (239) 598-9400 |

| Romantic Dining, Fort Lauderdale | |||||
| Asked by Paul on January 01, 2009 | |||||
| Q: Best romantic restaurants for Valentines Day dinner in Ft. Lauderdale area please. | |||||
|
A: Here are my five picks, in no particular order 1. 3030 Ocean (www.3030Ocean.com) at Marriott Harbor Beach. Chef Dean James Max does a great job with the menu, really paying special attention to Florida seafood, and the dining room had candlelit atmosphere with views of the ocean. Note: The terrace is being worked on, but should be done and even more romantic in plenty of time for Valentine's Day. The view is unmatched. 3030 Holiday Drive, 954/765-3030 2. Grateful Palate on 17th Street Causeway. You might well pass this place by, as it's just a little place in a strip mall on busy 17th Street. Its small size hides big food, though. The shop is three things, a gourmet grocery, a yacht provisioner and a restaurant..Chef John Learmonth's menus are always inventive and full ove flavor. It's an intimate spot for a fantastic dinner. 817 SE 17th Street, 954/467-1998 3. Cero (http://cerorestaurant.com/) at Ritz Carlton Fort Lauderdale. This is an elegant, stylish restaurant within Ritz Carlton, right on A1A. You can dine indoors or on Cero's outdoor terrace. Dress is a bit more upscale than most beach spots, and the dinner is just as elegant. The menu even offers a selection of caviars. 1 North Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. 954/302-6460 4. Sage Cafe (www.sagecafe.net) Sage Cafe is a classic, with a long history in Fort Lauderdale and a new spot in Hollywood. This is pure French bistro atmosphere with great prices. In fact, I just saw if you visit the website you can sign up to get a Two-for-One deal from Sage. Worth a website visit. 2378 North Federal Highway; 954/565-2299 (Hollywood location: 2000 Harrison Street; 954/391-9466) 5. Eduardo de San Angel (www.eduardodesanangel.com) This restuarant calls its food "Mexican infused international cuisine." It's Mexican gone to college--it gets high marks for food, atmosphere and service. 2822 East Commercial Blvd., 954/772-4731 Hope I've given you a broad enough selection with regard to price, food and atmosphere. My final word of advice? Celebrate your Valentine's Day on February 13 or February 15--then you'll see these restaurants at their truly finest. Barb |

A: I always direct visitors to big hotels and resorts for the holidays, because these places are serving guests 365 days a year. The best lead I got is for Captain's Table (941-639-1165). That restaurant will host four seatings on Christmas day: Noon, 2, 4 and 6 p.m. Cost is $25.95 per person. Right in Port Charlotte, you can also check at Best Western in Port Charlotte--call 941-639-1165. If you'll drive at all (you say you're arriving late, but not how late), you could also head up to Sarasota's Hyatt Regency and its Currents restaurant for an elegant meal. (941) 953-1234. | Cape Coral Area New Year's Eve
| Asked by Cheri Stevens on December 07, 2008 | |||||
| Q: We will be vacationing in the Cape Coral area and would love some choices for New Years Eve activities....dining, dancing, music...the whole nine yards! We know nothing about that area and would like to make our plans and reservations ahead of time! Thanks! | |||||
|
A: Cheri, Well, at least you'll be warmer than any of your Times Square (NYC) counterparts. Here are a few options. In Cape Coral, there will be a ball drop in the harbor, Cape Harbour, accompanied by fireworks. Restaurants in the area will be open late to help with the celebrations: Rumrunners, The Joint and Pignoli are all putting on New Year's Eve dinners with live music. (Reservations required at Rumrunners and Pignoli) Cape Harbour restaurant online info: (http://www.capeharbourdining.com/index.html) Rumrunners The Joint 5785 Cape Harbour Drive # 108 Pignoli online info (http://www.pignolicapeharbour.com/) 5785 Cape Harbour Dr, (239) 541-0800
If you go to Fort Myers and like a club scene, call Envie Lounge. From 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., there will be live music and a party to welcome in the New Year. Three levels of admission are available: Silver $25 - open bar, Gold $50 - VIP and open top-shelf and Platinum $100, which includes a 3-course gourmet dinner in Downtown, VIP and open top-shelf. A imited number of VIP tables with bottle service is available. Call for reservations: (239) 337-0909 More casual partying will be going on at Shoeless Joe's in Fort Myers: music, food (menu prices with a couple of specials just for the night), free party favors and a champagne toast at midnight. http://www.shoeless-joes.com/new_years_eve_party.html One final option to offer you is to get dressed to the nines and hit Ritz-Carlton in Naples for dinner and dancing and the works. Hotels can be fun places to be for the New Year's Eve celebration, even if it is your own private celebration. But perhaps you'd like to atten the Ritz-Carlton Naples Dining Gala, a $350 per person black-tie event at the golf resort. Cocktails are served at 7 p.m., dinner at 8 p.m. and dancing to live music goes on all evening (through 2 a.m. on January 1). That price includes the cocktails, dinner, drinks all evening and the entertainment/dancing. Call early to reserve, but there's a seven-day cancellation notcie policy, which means if you make these reservations after December 24, there's no turning back--so have fun! | A few places to eat on Florida's West Coast
| Asked by Deborah on November 23, 2008 | |||||
| Q: Hi Barb,My sister and I are looking for great little dining places for a 4 day road trip from Clearwater to Naples on the west coast in February 2009. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time! | |||||
|
A: Deborah, I just got back from a few days in Clearwater, so I'm happy to give you a few suggestions. Rusty's at Sheraton Sand Key (Clearwater) (www.sheratonsandkey.com/Rustys.php) I am not a big hotel restaurant person, but this menu is impressive. The chef really seems to have a modern approach to his dishes. Do yourself a favor, don't go for the buffet, but order a la carte. It's pricey, but I think you'll be happy. 1160 Gulf Boulevard Clearwater Beach (727)595-1611 Crabby Bill's (www.crabbybills.com/). This is a super casual but fun spot right at the roundabout in Clearwater (and part of a small chain). 57 Causeway Blvd, Clearwater (727) 210-1313 Heading off the beaten path? Head for Matlacha (Pine Island) and The Olde Fish House/Market. Order up one of the fish baskets--grouper is a favorite--and sit out back overlooking the docks where the boats come in--boats that probably delivered that day's catch. While you're there, spend a few hours checking out the art galleries in Matlacha. 4530 Pine Island Rd NW, Matlacha Once you reach Naples, I suggest trying Bamboo Cafe (www.bamboocafenaples.com/), a locally-owned restaurant featuring French cuisine. There are some great lunch specials at times, and in the evenings, you might be able to pair a dinner with a sunset cruise. 755 12th Ave S, Naples (239) 643-6177 Florida's West Coast is beautiful--enjoy yourself and bon appetit. |

| Q: My husband is going to a conference at the Tradewinds Grand Island on St Petersburg Beach. We arrive on Dec 31 morning and wondered where we can go for dinner since it's New Year's Eve. Nothing fancy..we'll be exhausted since we leave for the airport at 3:30am to fly to Florida. Something within walking distance from the hotel would be great. I'll also have most of the time to myself and would like to go eat along the beach area...any recommendations for the 6 days I'll be there? | |||||
|
A: Pat, here is an answer I wrote a few months back; it still holds true. I also visited a few places in Tampa in late October and blog about them on my dining blog (http://visitflorida.com/experts/dining/action.blog/id.879). The earlier answer: You can most definitely eat very well in St. Petersburg. If you want a room with a view, you might like to try Columbia Restaurant on the Pier (800 Second Ave. NE St. Petersburg, 727-822-8000), which is the St. Petersburg location of the Ybor City original. The signature salad recipe is the original--from 1905. Try the paella and the sangria and drink in the view at the same time. Red Mesa goes with a Southwestern/Mexican flair (4912 Fourth St. N St. Petersburg, 727-527-8728). The prices are good and you can enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner. For some French food, you might want to travel into Tampa for dinner Chez Bryce, 238 E Davis Blvd. Tampa (813) 258-8100. Chez Bryce was opened by a local who came back to town after getting an education at Culinary Institute of America. The space sounds interesting, and you’ll probably be in Tampa for some of the best weather of the year. Desserts sound like doing without is not an option. Apparently, a couple of crepe restaurants have opend in town, as well. There’s Flip on Kennedy Boulevard and MacDill Avenue in Tampa, and there’s a mobile creperie to be found on Saturdays at the art exhibit in Williams Park in St. Petersburg. Known as La Crepe D’Or, the van (for want of a better word) puts out great crepes filled with hearty flavors. |

| December Dining in Miami | |||||

| Q: hello, I will go to Miami with four friends. We just have about 4~5 days in December. Please give us some advice plan. For example,where when should go first day, and how to plan the hotel. Thank you very much! | |||||
|
A: December is a great time to get to South Florida--the weather is perfection. I can best advise you on dining options--hotels depend very much on the neighborhoods you'd like to stay in--weather you're close to South Beach, Downtown, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove. Those are all great "stay" options, so try googling "hotels in (neighborhood name)" for some choices. Each neighborhood has a different vibe. As for dining, I am constantly urging people to visit the Design District on the North end of Miami, just off Rte 95. You cannot go wrong with Michael's Genuine Food and Drink (http://www.michaelsgenuine.com/) or Brosia (http://www.brosiamiami.com/enter.html). If you head another mile or two north, you could visit Michy's, where Chef Michelle Bernstein is gaining national recognition for her upscale spin on fine comfort food. Downtown, you might want to try Azul at Mandarin Oriental Hotel (http://www.mandarinoriental.com/miami/dining/azul/) or Govind Armstrong's Florida spot, Table 8 Miami (http://www.table8la.com/). No visit to Miami is complete without at stop in Little Havana on Calle Ocho (8th Street)--Cafe Versailles is the spot to grab a cup of espresso and a good sampling of Cuban food. It's all about the boisterous atmosphere there, so give it a try! | Q: What is Florida's best food event? Are there any in the summer or fall?
|
A: Michelle, Well, best is tough, isn't it? And I'm in no place to name the best since I haven't visited all the festivals. Yet. I am working on it, though. I just finished posting a blog entry (yet to go up at the time of this writing) talking about seafood festivals around the state, so please keep on coming back to see my dining and food blog for that entry. In the meantime, I'm sorry to say you just missed the Florida Seafood Festival in Apalachicola, but you can pencil that in for the first Saturday in November 2009. There's a Homosassa, Florida Seafood Festival going on this very weekend (November 8,9). Later this month, check out the Panacea Might Mullet Festival (Northwest Florida) on November 22. On January 17, head to Key West for the 4th Annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival. In Miami in late February? If you like food and wine, you should treat yourself to the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, Feb. 19-22. But get tickets for that NOW. The events sell out rather quickly. (www.SobeWineandFoodFest.com) Things do calm down in the summer--the heat means we all head to the beaches. But next September, gear up for one of the biggest, the Pensacola Seafood Festival, scheduled for September 25 to 27, 2009. (http://www.fiestaoffiveflags.org/SeafoodFestival/index.html) These area really just a few. If you know where you're headed, google the town name and seafood festivals--there's always something happening in Florida! Happy Eating! Barb for VISITFLORIDA.com/dining www.babettefeasts.com |

| Christmas Dining Near Orlando | |||||
| Asked by keith on October 29, 2008 | |||||
| Q: we have 20 family members renting a house in calabay park, where can we eat well on Christmas day? | |||||
|
A: This question is coming up a lot as we approach the holidays. Luckily for visitors, the top travel destinations cater to their visitors. Because the hotels and big parks operate 24/7, 365 days a year, your best bet is to start with the bigger hotels and the restaurants in the parks. Your group of 20 might seem like a challenge to you, but these places are set up to deal with enormous groups on a regular basis, so 20? Probably a cake walk. That said, you definitely have to warn them you're coming or they won't be able to accommodate you as walk-ins. Have a look on websites of the parks and the parks' hotels for restaurants that look appealing to you. You can go casual to fine dining. Then pick up the phone and talk to several spots and see who can work to accommodate your group best. This might also be a great spot to check out the Open Reservations system I love so well--check out my blog on this here. http://visitflorida.com/experts/dining/action.blog/id.500. We were wondering what the situation is for the holiday season regarding eating out on Christmas day? Are many restaurants closed? Will it be wise to reserve well in advance?Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks,Arron

A: Aaron, Thanks for the question, and welcome to the States, especially to sunny Florida and Orlando. You will have no trouble at all finding a place to eat on Christmas Day. Orlando is kind of a city that doesn't take a break from welcoming its visitors. That said, you are definitely advised to reserve well in advance. Orlando will be crowded with visitors from around the globe and they all still have to eat! Because many places will likely be offering special Christmas day menus, you may have to reserve AND pay in advance. I advise going ahead and contacting the places you might be interested in eating (remember, the theme parks are open 365 days a year and offer everything from casual dining to white tablecloth restaurants. Have a look at my article on fine dining in the parks.)... Good luck and have a wonderful visit. Barb |

A: Hi, Ronald. You don't say where you'll be in Florida, so I can't be too specific here, but as a general rule, your best bet is to check with the casinos directly, especially online, which makes it simple. Click on any of the casinos' websites and then click on Dining. You will find all the options available to casino guests. These days most casinos have everything from casual buffets to fine, white tablecloth restaurants and everything in between. If you want to venture out, check with the casino guest relations desks. Staffers can probably point you to local restaurants that meet your needs. |

I have read that it is best to book in advance, but I have not been able to find any restaurants that do the food I am looking for. I would be very grateful if you could offer any advise or point me in the right direction.Many thanks in advance.Mrs Alison Plant

A: Hi--Florida is a wonderful place to spend the Holidays--welcome to our warmth. I hope it means you're escaping some chilly weather, too. You don't say where you are coming from--as in, I can't swear as to what is traditional for you at Christmas. Our traditional dinner is turkey with stuffing (roast beef or hams often stand in for the turkey), gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, salads and plenty of desserts. For many of us here, it's not too different from our Thanksgiving dinners in November. Most upscale hotels will offer a traditional dinner, and you do not typically have to be a guest to have dinner in a hotel. You are quite right in that reservations must be made in advance, and you often have to pay in advance (a prix fixe or fixed price meal). Call the bigger resort hotels to ask about specific Christmas dinner plans. Being the middle of September, it might be too early for them to take a reservation, but it never hurts to ask. |

| Q: I enjoy putting weekend getaways for a group of my friends. We live in the Tampa area. This past weekend, we stayed in Siesta Key Village, where as we walked out of our hotel, we were in the midst of restaurants/bars & shops. It was so great having our nightlife all within walking distance. Such as Ybor City. We've also been to Marco Island in an area that had that same nightlife/shopping/hotelstrip . Do you know of any other areas within Florida that I could look into putting another weekend getaway? | |||||
|
A: Liz, I've been charmed by Delray Beach. There are condos to rent and The Colony Hotel and Cabana Club right on Atlantic Avenue, which is a lovely, historic hotel. You'll find plenty of dining up and down Atlantic Avenue (32 East is particularly wonderful) and along the beach. You'll also find the Blue Anchor Pub, still haunted after all these years (VISITFLORIDA's Shopping expert blogged all about it here.) Of course in addition to great places to dine, there are plenty of unique shops and art galleries to visit, too. Delray Beach is worth the trip. Barb |

| Q: I want to tske a dining tour of Florida starting in Tallahasse and ending in Miami. I will be driving what would you suggest. | |||||
|
A: First off, I'll say lucky you! A very nice way to get a taste of a lot of different sides to the Florida Dining scene. Ready for a long answer? If you start off in Tallahassee, I must send you to Apalachicola, where you can feast on Apalachicola oysters and have dinner at Avenue Sea at Gibson Inn (51 Avenue C). The chef spent some time at The French Laundry in California, and when he decided on a lifestyle change, he landed here. Work your way east and then south to the Gainesville area, a visit to The Yearling, with ties to Florida's own Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, who won the Pulitzer Prize for her book by the same name. You'll get a taste of the southern side of Florida, with a lot of menu items inspired by things Rawlings described in her many books. Go west from Gainesville, towards Tampa and discover the Greek culture in Tarpon Springs, home of a large sea sponge industry. If you stop in Tampa, you might want to check out Bern's Steakhouse, which has the largest wine cellar in the world according to that restaurant's research--which I haven't seen disputed. If, instead, you head south and slightly east from Gainesville, you might check out The Sugar Mill and Griddle House at DeLeon Springs State Park, where you get served batter for your pancakes: cook them on the griddle right in front of you, then enjoy the state park. I've gotten you half way down the state; please check in soon for more of the road trip. Barb |

| Where to eat in St. Petersburg near Hilton Bayfront? | |||||
| Asked by Rosalind on September 05, 2008 | |||||
| Q: In late September, I am attending a convention. The first evening that we get in, 15 of us want to go and eat. I have been looking into the Pier. We are staying at the Hilton Bayfront. We just want a place to relax (after traveling all day), eat and talk. Could you recommend some restaurants in the area of the hotel? Thanks, Rosalind | |||||
|
A: You don't mention your price limits, if there are any, but I've heard good things about Fresco's, which is along the water, on Bayshore Avenue in St. Petersburg, a few blocks north and one block east of where you'll be staying--right at the entrance to the Pier. They have an outdoor patio, which sounds like a great place to relax after a long day of travel. The menu is on the upper end of the price range, but you could probably make quite a nice evening of a wide selection of appetizers, if they would let you (dining on "small plates" has become quite the rage lately). Also on the pier and perhaps a more affordable option and a place that would be able to accommodate your group while giving you all a nice view of the water is Captain Al's Waterfront Grill and Bar, There's an outdoor dining area here, too, it's about the same distance as Fresco's from your hotel. Call ahead anywhere you go for your group: 727-898-5800 for Captain Al's and 727-894-4429 for Fresco's. |

| Dining Along International Drive | |||||
| Asked by Erika on September 02, 2008 | |||||
| Q: Barb, I have a group that will be traveling to Orlando and I would like to present them with a list of dining options close to their hotel. The hotel will not provide me anything via mail - is there another way I can get this information? They won't have a car and I want them to be able to look at options before they arrive. Any suggestions? They will be staying at 5905 International Drive · Orlando, Florida 32819 Thanks, Erika Scharnagl229-200-6236 | |||||

A: Erika, There are plenty of dining options up and down International drive. You don't say if they will be visiting the big resorts, Disney or Universal, or if they will be doing fine dining or casual. Within the parks themselves, I recommend almost any of the sit-down dining spots, and will add that a quick call to guest services at either park will set them up with reservations, absolutely the way to go--otherwise, they will be waiting in some very long lines, and no one wants that. If they do visit the parks, there are some signature celebrity chef spots, including Todd English's Bluezoo in The Dolphin, Wolfgang Puck's Cafe in Downtown Disney, Emeril's at Universal's City Walk and Emeril's Tchoup Chop at Universal's Royal Pacific Resort. Click here for a long list of dining options available up and down International Drive; the same site has information about riding the I-Trolley, which should take care of your group without cars--one-way rides are $1; all day passes are $3. The restaurant list is extensive and should take care of cravings from fast food to Chinese to quick casual. |

| Authentic Food Around Miami | |||||
| Asked by Chris on August 19, 2008 | |||||
| Q: We are planning trips and programs for incentive groups (of about 25) coming to Miami. We want to "wow' them with different activities, show them an authentic side of FL, and take them to eat in places that are local or special and off the beaten path, i.e. in Little Havana or Little Haiti. Would you have recommendations or suggestions? | |||||
|
A: Great idea to look beyond the splash for these spots. Some of my recommendations: Jimbo’s on Virginia Key for smoked fish, beer and bocce…and not much else. Jimbo is still around and it’s not so easy to find, but somehow people manage. (It’s on your way to Key Biscayne) Scotty’s Landing. In Coconut Grove, behind a big marina and overshadowed by a “name” restaurant, Scotty’s is always my pick for a great fish sandwich on the outdoor patio (I don’t believer there is an indoor) overlooking Biscayne Bay. Café Versailles Calle Ocho. Stop here for a menu full of so many choices of Cuban cuisine it’ll be hard to choose. Try a sampler, pick something, or just stop and the walk-up window for a quick shot of espresso with the locals. It' not a best kept secret by any means, but it's quite a landmark. You’ll hear more Spanish than English spoken here--it's home away from home for many Cuban locals. I like to send people to the Design District in Miami, just off I-95 and just north of 195, the Julia Tuttle Causeway. Michael’s Genuine has gotten great buzz on a national level, but you won’t go wrong at Brosia, either. The vibe is urban and sophisticated, casual and very Miami. A mix you won’t find anywhere else. For Haitian food, locals tend to rave about Le Griot de Madame John, a small and affordable place that first opened in Madame John’s home. Try the griot in the place’s name: long-cooked pork cubed and fried--hot and crispy outside, moist and tender inside. | Eating Out Orlando--Something Different, Something that Won't Break the Bank

| Q: My wife and I, 2 children, 7 & 2 and 65 yr old aunt are looking forward to going to Orlando in Feb 15 2009. We are staying in a villa and would like recommendations for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We will have breakfast at home some mornings, but whilst on holiday it is always good to try out the local food. We are on a budget and are hoping to do the Pirates dinner one night. We would just like advice for a happy night out. Thank you in advance | |||||

A: Few visitors know Orlando is home to a large Vietnamese population, and where ethnic group settle, so settle restaurants. Lac Viet Bistro is at 2021 East Colonial Drive in Orlando. Noodle dishes here should appeal across the generations. You're sure to have a good meal at a great price. Closer to your home base, is Christo's Cafe at 1815 Edgewater Drive, Orlando. Plenty of breakfast choices (baked goods made on the premises) and the Greek Omelet, loaded with vegies and lamb, feta and olives. More conventional choices are on the menu, of course (French toast, eggs Benedict). Christo's is open late, too, so you might think about heading there for dinner. It's a diner with diner prices, so it shouldn't break the bank. If you're up for a little drive, something different, take a trip to DeLeon Springs and the Old Spanish Sugar Mill. Young and old alike will like pouring and cooking their own pancakes on the griddle--their own griddle, the one that is at each table. And it's a nice break from all the bright lights of Orlando. It's an hour, but make a day of it and visit the springs and see some of Florida's natural beauty. | Q: going to St Augustine in October, Just looking for some info place to eat in old town.

A: You'll really enjoy your visit to "America's Oldest City," St. Augustine. Here are a few options for you: A1A Ale Works is housed in a historic building in the old city. You can enjoy a menu featuring seafood and one of the beers brewed by A1A Ale as well--the dining rooms overlook Mantanza Bay. The Tasting Room offers Spanish cuisine--plenty of tapas (small tastes) are on the menu and in the evening you might catch some Flamenco or live music. If you need a sweet taste of something, check out the blog posting I did recently about Claude's Chocolates in Old Town, which should make for a nice break in your day. Not directily in Old Town, but nearby, The Conch House in St. Augustine, is a place where you can dine in tiki huts stretching out over the water.
