Once upon a time, all this Southeast Florida territory was farmland – frankly not even too, too long ago. Colleagues who grew up in Southeast Florida were told they were moving to the sticks when they came up this way. When the huge Muvico complex was built in Pembroke Pines, some people wondered who would go there. In the true spirit of "if you build it, they will come," suffice it to say that the Muvico is no longer far away from anything.
But what's all that got to do with Bob Roth's New River Groves? Well, just that the place was once a huge agricultural grove. The huge groves are gone, but Bob's is here to stay, and it's just a few hundred feet west of the Florida Turnpike at Griffin Road in the Fort Lauderdale area (which makes it not too far, either, from the I-95 Griffin Road exit).
The next time you find yourself driving along the turnpike, and you really don't feel like another combo meal from one of the fast food giants, make a stop. You'll find sandwiches, fruit, the best fruit smoothies ever, and you can pick up some extra orange blossom honey or even a Terry's Key Lime pie for dessert later on.
I know if I ever find myself nearby, my car seems to steer itself to the parking lot. I order a pineapple coconut smoothie for breakfast and take a Terry's Pie home for dessert that night. And I always find it more satisfying than a combo meal – less expensive, too.
And if you can't make it in person? Bob's take phone orders – and Key lime pies DO ship well!
