Breaking news: TripAdvisor has just ranked Ruskin (just across Tampa Bay from St. Petersburg and 30 miles south of Tampa on I-75) one of its Top Ten Emerging U.S. Travel Destinations for 2009.
Why? Well, two good foodie reasons are the Ruskin Seafood Festival (first weekend in November) and the Ruskin Tomato & Heritage Festival (We just missed it: the first weekend in May. Mark your calendars for next year.)
And here’s something I’ve been looking for for my readers all year: your own crabbing adventure. In Ruskin, check out Captain Gus’s Crabby Adventures, "a four-hour boating and eating journey with a commercial crabber." What you catch will depend on the season and what’s allowed, but you’ll bait and haul traps (check out our video for the hard work of hauling up stone crab traps), then you’ll get a lesson on cleaning, cooking and eating the crab (okay, some of us need to be taught how to properly crack a crab, that’s what I mean by learning how to eat a crab).
Now the secret’s out — head for Ruskin for a great town and some great food fun.
Want more of Florida? Why not invite your family and friends to discover places as unique as Ruskin? Share a Little Sunshine. |
