| Fishing in Florida |
| Asked by Marten on February 03, 2012 |
| Q: Hi! I'm from Sweden and I am going to Florida in december with my family. I don't want to book me into something now, but I would like to know what licenses and tickets are needed to be able to fish in Florida, if it suits our plans. I love to fish for everything so I can't say whether it should be fresh or saltwater. I'm not really interested in Big Game fishing. I'm more interested in mullets, bass and that kind of fish. Any suggestions? Is there a guides doing that kind of fishing? Is it possible to rent rods and reels? |
|
A: As a visitor, you will need a Florida fishing license for both fresh and salt water. Complete information can be found at www.MyFWC.com. I don't know where you plan to visit, but in most areas of the state, it is possible to fish both fresh and salt water on gthe same trip. I would recommend trying to catch some largemouth bass in one of Florida's lakes and then trying to catch spotted sea trout or red drum in one of the state's coastal areas. A good resource for charter information is the Florida Guides Association at www.florida-guides.com. |
| Fishing Museums in Florida |
| Asked by Liz on August 09, 2011 |
| Q: Hi Terry, I've heard there are several fishing museums in Florida. Could you tell me more about them? |
|
A: Liz,
Have fun, and let me know if you need more info. |
| Asked by Connie on August 08, 2011 |
| Q: We're coming at Christmas-time to visit our son. Where is a good place to go deep-sea fishing? |
| Sailfishing |
| Asked by cam taylor on July 13, 2011 |
| Q: howdy, I asked earlier about your recomendations for booking a sailfish charter and i'm not trying to discredit your advice but i'm getting mixed results from captains on when is the best time to catch them, its about 50/50 for summer vs winter, your thoughts? |
|
A: Cam, Ask 10 different captains about sailfishing and you will get 10 different answers. It is like calling a bait shop. Ask how the fishing is and they will tell you that it is good, regardless of the weather or time of year. The same holds true with captains. Call one up and ask to go sailfishing and they will take you, summer or winter. But if it were my time and money, I wold go during the winter. That is just my opinion. TT |
| Fishing on an October Honeymoon |
| Asked by PJ on July 13, 2011 |
| Q: Looking for a charter for 2 people or to join a group on a boat. Coming for our honeymoon from South Dakota. Coming in mid October. Not particular in what we catch, just want to catch. 4-6 hour trip. Off shore a bit or kinda close. Any suggestions? |
|
A: October is a great month in Florida for a little nearshore fishing. You might catch the beginning of the annual kingfish migration. I don't know where you are planning to stay but the waters off Tampa Bay are particularly good that time of year. Contact Steve Papen with Fintastic Charters. |
| Too much to ask for |
| Asked by Angie Verros on July 12, 2011 |
| Q: I have never fished, really do not like outdoors, but feel the need, would like the rush of catching something, but need it to be a nice boat, that maybe they will then cook for us. Too much to ask for!? |
|
A: Angie, There are hundreds of captains with nice boats that can catch fish, and some have relationships with local restaurants where you can take your catch and have it preprared for yourself. I would recommend Dave Mistretta out of Indian Rocks Beach on the Gulf side of the state. You can reach him at jawstoo@msn.com. |
| Scalloping |
| Asked by Lisa on July 06, 2011 |
| Q: We are looking for somewhere to rent for 3-4 nights that is economical but clean and on the water with boat access to go scalloping-we live in Jacksonville, FL-looking at Steinhatchee or Homosassa-or anywhere that someone might know of ???? :) Thanks |
|
A: I would stay at Steinhatchee Landing Resort and Retreat. It features first-class accommodations, and you are close to one of the best scalloping areas in Florida. |
| Casting from shore |
| Asked by DJ on July 04, 2011 |
| Q: Can I cast a net from shore at a beach in Perdido to see what we find with my kids? Or is there a law against it...a license to buy? |
|
A: If you are Florida resident cast netting from shore for a saltwater species (other than mullet in fresh water), you are required to have a no-cost saltwater shoreline fishing license unless you have a regular saltwater fishing license or are exempt. For a full list of exemptions, click here. |
| Deep Sea Fishing out of Orlando |
| Asked by Dennis Gray on June 30, 2011 |
| Q: I'll be spending most of my vacation in the Orlando area but would like to try some deep sea fishing in July. Where would be a good place to go and what can I expect to catch? |
|
A: I'd head west to the Gulf of Mexico. During the summer months, you can catch snapper, grouper, amberjack, dolphin, wahoo, blackfin tuna, sailfish and maybe even a king mackerel. Contact Capt. Dave Mistretta of the Jaws Too out of Indian Rocks Beach. Call 727-439-2628. |
| Sailfishing with Dad |
| Asked by cam taylor on June 22, 2011 |
| Q: hi, i'm looking to book a fishing charter to catch sailfish for my dads 50th, any recommendations? |
|
A: What a great birthday present! Peak time for sailfishing is usually the winter months. You can't go wrong fishing the waters off Palm Beach in December and January. I don't know when you dad turns the Big 50, but if he can wait until then, it will be well worth it. |
| Fishing Northwest Florida |
| Asked by Tracy Perdue on June 20, 2011 |
| Q: Planning a 12 hour off shore trip for 4 persons on July 15th. Not sure if Panama City, Destin, Port St. Joe, or Alabama would be best option for charter. Please advise. |
|
A: If you want to head offshore and fish for 12 hours, I would go out of Destin. This city has a rich fishing history and you can catch pretty much anything that swims in the Gulf of Mexico from this port town. They call it the World's Luckiest Fishing Village for good reason. | Fishing Near Orlando |
| Asked by Rhonda Farrow on June 19, 2011 |
| Q: Where are the closest fishing spots to Orlando? |
|
A: If you are staying in Orlando and want to wet a line I would head over to Kissimmee and fish Big Lake Toho. This is one of the Top Ten Bass Lakes in Florida. Your chances of catching a trophy fish are pretty good. Click here to learn more. |
| Fishing for Reds and Specks in Destin |
| Asked by Hunter on June 15, 2011 |
| Q: Terry, I am going on an 8 day family vacation to Destin, Fl in a few days... My father and I chase Reds and Specks out of Venice and Cocodrie, LA as much as possible. This year we are taking our +20 ft. Blue Wave with us to fish Choctawhatchee Bay and the surrounding areas... We have never fished there before. So my question is, what advice do you have for me as a first time fisherman in that area regarding species/hotspots/tackle that I should try? Any advice/comments/recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, -Hunter |
|
A: Redfish are redfish and trout are trout, no matter where you go. What you use in your neck of the woods will certainly work in Florida. As for navigating local waters, now that is a different question. You should buy a map chip for your GPS that covers Northwest Florida, or the very least, buy yourself a chartbook. I am partial to the MapTech series myself. Good Luck and Tight Lines. |
| How to Buy a fishing License |
| Asked by LeBron Taylor on June 15, 2011 |
| Q: How do i get my fishing license. |

| Anglers from Africa |
| Asked by pauline on June 14, 2011 |
| Q: Hi, I have a friend comming from Durban, South Africa and we are going to the keys for a few days. He loves fishing/boating and I was wondering if you could suggest something for us? This is his first trip to the States, and so I want this to be wild and exciting for him! Something he wont forget! Any info would be great. Nothing too expensive! Thanks Thanks |
|
A: You can't go wrong taking your friend to the Florida Keys. They call Islamorada the Sportfishing Capital of the World. If it swims in the ocean, you can catch it here. Check out Bud N' Mary's Marina. They have nearly 50 guides. You will find somebody to show you the ropes. Click here to learn more. |
| Key West Charter |
| Asked by Peter Wysoczanski on June 09, 2011 |
| Q: Hey Terry, I'm a fishing addict on a budget and headed to key west at the end of July and am looking for some advice on a charter or where to look for the best deals it looks like a group of us between 4-6 is going. Thanks a ton maybe one day i'll catch ya out on the water -Peter w. |
|
A: Peter, There are a lot of skilled and very enthusiastic fishing captains who dock their boats along historic Charter Boat Row in the Key West City Marina. I would wait until you get there and go down and walk the docks and try to bargain your way aboard a boat. There are deals to be had! TT |
| Island Adventure |
| Asked by Patti Estep on June 03, 2011 |
| Q: We are coming to visit our son in Homassas in July and would like to take his family on a fishing/shelling adventure to a island close to St. Petersburg. We want to spend time on an island for the teenagers but fishing for the guys. What would you suggest |
|
A: I would take the family out to Caladesi Island, which is about an hour's drive south of Homosassa. You can catch a passenger ferry at Honeymoon Island State Park that will take you out and bring you back. Caladesi has great swimming and hiking. It also has an excellent snack bar. Click here for more information. |
| The "rainy" season |
| Asked by Mike Pittman on May 14, 2011 |
| Q: we will be staying in treasure island from june 7 thru the 16th will we be hitting the rainy season? |
|
A: The sun always shines in Florida. The typical weather pattern for the summer on Florida's West Coast is sunshine and good fishing all day until about 3 p.m., when it is time to go inside, cool off, have a nice refreshing lemonade, and while you are regrouping, it usually rains for about an hour or two. But the storm clouds pass, the sun comes out again, and that should leave you just enough time to catch the evening bite and land a few more fish. Then, watch the best sunset on earth, call it a night and get up to do it all over again. |
| Party Boat Fishing |
| Asked by Gerald Potter on May 05, 2011 |
| Q: where is the nearest party boat fishing from St.George island |
|
A: Gerald, Destin has a rich party boat tradition. You will have plenty to choose from. I suggest you start with the Destin Princess. Got to www.destinpartyboatfishing.com for more information. TT |
| Flyfishing for Bonefish |
| Asked by kevin on April 28, 2011 |
| Q: best place/time of year for bones on the fly? (thanks) |
|
A: While many guides prefer the spring and fall for flyfishing for bonefish in the Florida Keys, you can catch the gray ghost of the flats all year long from Key Largo to Key West. |
| Fishing Single |
| Asked by cj on April 23, 2011 |
| Q: I am planning to go deep sea fishing in May, and I will also be fishing single. Are there charters that group singles for a better rate, or maybe some website that can do that...btw, newbie fisherperson here.. |
|
A: Most charter boat captains typically carry up to six paying passengers on an offshore boat and two to three on an inshore, or flats fishing trip. Your best bet is to "split" the charter fee is by negotiating with an individual captain. They often put together trips for people just like you. |
| Breakaway fihsing gear |
| Asked by Peter Church on April 21, 2011 |
| Q: Why would anyone use "breakaway gear" when fishing for Tarpon? |
|
A: Good question. Check out the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's web site for a more thorough explanation: http://bit.ly/i32be3 |
| Price of Fishing Charters |
| Asked by Julie on April 04, 2011 |
| Q: The prices quoted for fishing charters are for up to four people so it's quite expensive if you are on your own. Any tips? Julie |
|
A: Many guides are looking for business so they are willing to bargain. Don't be afraid to split a charter with another angler. It will cut your cost in half. The price quoted for a half day (four hour trip) may be flexible. Ask to fish for two hours and you might get a break on the price. |
| Fishing in April |
| Asked by michelle on April 01, 2011 |
| Q: We are planning a trip to Florida middle of April,we wanna do some deep sea fishing. Where which part of Florida should we stay?? |
|
A: April is my favorite month to fish. You will find the catching great from Pensacola to Key West and back up the East Coast to Jacksonville. But if I had to pick, I'd try to catch the kingfish run off of Tampa Bay. You won't be disappointed. |
| Bass Fishing Near the Coast |
| Asked by Melony Paradis on April 01, 2011 |
| Q: We want to move to an area that has bass fishing in North Florida that is the closest to the beach on the east coast. Where would you recomend? |
|
A: Move to Gainesville. It is a great sports town, near several good bass fishing lakes and an easy two hour drive to either coast. |
| Boating in The Keys |
| Asked by Leslie on March 10, 2011 |
| Q: I have googled until my fingers fell off & I just can't find exactly what I'm looking for. We are vacationing in the Keys this June. There are 6 of us - all adults and a 16 yr old. Our main objective is snorkeling and fishing. We want to rent a boat. We own our own boat, but I'm sure boating in the Keys is different than boating in an Oklahoma lake. (I am a little concerned about running up on something in shallow areas.) Where is an affordable place to rent a boat for 3 or 4 days (if affordable is possible)? Where are the best places to boat to for snorkeling, and for fishing? Will we see just marine life as opposed to shells when snorkeling? Hoping to stay away from crowds. Right now, we're looking at Key Largo. Haven't book a condo yet. I know this is alot of questions. Hope you can help. Looking forward to some guidance. THANKS! |
|
A: Key Largo is a great place to fish and snorkel. There are literally thousands of places to go and most of the reefs are marked on local charts. If you stay in marked channels, you should not have a problem. But boating in the Florida Keys is a lot different than boating in an Oklahoma lale. When you get to Florida, buy a local chart book from a marine supply store. Invest in a handheld GPS with a chart program. Before you set out, make sure you ask the dockmaster at your marina or wherever you end up renting the boat if local conditions have changed. You can't beat local knowledge. |
| Ferry to the Bahamas |
| Asked by Patrick on March 05, 2011 |

A: Patrick, Yes, there is ferry service from Ft. Lauderdale to the Bahamas. Check out the Discovery Cruise Line at www.discoverycruiseline.com. TT |
| Fishing Indian Rocks Beach |
| Asked by Melissa on February 27, 2011 |
| Q: We will be visiting in early July. We have 4 teenage boys who live to fish. We would like to take them on a fishing boat. We will be Centrally located at Indian Rocks Beach area. Tahnks |
|
A: Melissa, You are coming to the Gulf Coast of Florida at a good time. You might be able to catch the tail end (no pun intended) of the tarpon run. The best captain in the Indian Rocks Beach area is the legendary Dave Mistretta. You can reach him at Jawstoo@msn.com. Good luck and tight lines. TT |
| Fishing Destin in May |
| Asked by mark mosser on February 27, 2011 |
| Q: I am coming to destin in mid may and would like to fishing for snook or redfish or something else which you deem appropriate for that time of year... thanks mark |
|
A: Mark, Destin is a little far north for snook, but the redfishing is good in Destin Bay. I'd give Inshore Angler guide services a call at 850.862.9722. TT |
| Lake Okeechobee |
| Asked by Estella Gray on February 16, 2011 |
| Q: Have you visited the Lake Okeechobee region lately. The Collins Center has launched a regional marketing plan and would love for Terry to visit: www.lakeobigwater.com |

A: Estella, I was on the "Big O" gator hunting in October. I'd love to come down for some big bass this spring. TT |
| Fishing and Boating in Florida |
| Asked by Hank on February 15, 2011 |
| Q: Do I need a fishing or boating license to fish and boat in Florida |
|
A: Hank, Both residents and non residents need fishing licenses. There are exceptions; to learn more, go to www.MyFWC.com. If you were born after Jan. 1, 1988 you must get a boater education card. Once again, there are exceptions. To learn more, go to the same website. TT |
| Big Bass in May |
| Asked by Paul in Nova Scotia on January 29, 2011 |
| Q: Hi Terry, I was wondering if its possible to catch a big ole bass hawg in Florida in May or is it too hot then? I;m thinking about Toho or Walk In Water. Thanks in advance.Paul |
|
A: Paul, May is still a great month to catch big bass in Florida. In fact, you can hook ten pounders all summer long if you fish deep where the water is a little cooler. I'd recommend both Toho or Walk in Water. Live shiners will be the ticket. TT |
| Florida in February |
| Asked by chantal on January 21, 2011 |
| Q: Planning a trip to Florida for 3rd week of February. Need a place that has great fishing, kids activities, beaches and about 1 - 1 1/2 hours away at the most from Bradenton for some family visiting... any ideas? |
|
A: The fishing is great this time of year in Sarasota Bay. With a light spinning outfit, you should be able to catch your share of redfish and trout. The sheepshead bite is also on fire in February. I'd head to Sarasota. Great fishing. Plenty of activities for kids. And the beaches can't be beat. |
| Daytona in August |
| Asked by stef on January 20, 2011 |
| Q: hi... i will be in daytona all of august and i like to know what'is the best for fishing, boat or anything thank you stef from switzerland |
|
A: Stef, The offshore fishing is great in August. I'd hire a captain and try to get in on the tail end of the kingfish run. Hook a 40-pounder on 12-pound test and you''ll have quite a tale to tell your friends back in Switzerland. TT |
| Bachelor Party on the Water |
| Asked by Alex on January 18, 2011 |
| Q: We're from Michigan and are planning a bacholer party in Florida the second week of July. We have a party of 8-10 guys who would all like to go deep sea fishing. What part of Florida do you recommend and what is in season? Any recommendations on lodging/ guides/ captains or fish/stay packages are greatly appreciated. |
|
A: Most captains have what is called a "six pack" license which means they can take up to six passengers, or five, if they have a mate or deck hand. That means you would probably do best with a party boat, unless you want to hire two private boats, but that will be expensive. I would come to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area, stay at the Tradewinds Resort on St. Pete beach and fish off one of the boats that run out of Hubbards Marina, Madeira Beach. |
| Spearfishing in The Keys |
| Asked by mike on January 09, 2011 |
| Q: I watched a tv program, they were spear fishing in torch key. it looked real neat. i am looking for place my wife and i can rent-preferrably on the water- maybe has a boat, that we can take out and spear fish and regular fish-in the ocean. would be nice to also have a bit of night life and nice little beach side restaurants. what can you suggest. we are also scuba divers, thanks |
|
A: Spearfishing is great thorughout the Florida Keys. Most of the best wreck dives are in the Key Largo area, but you can catch reef dives everywhere from Islamorada to Key West. But if you are looking for night life, the southernmost island is your best bet. Head to Key West. You want be disappointed. |
| Fishing in May |
| Asked by debbie on January 08, 2011 |
| Q: my husband loves to fish would like to try deep sea fishing we are thinking about florida in May and have never been to florida we live in Oregon can you suggest a couple of places that might work for us thanks for any assistance debbie |
|
A: If I were coming to Florida in May, I'd fish for tarpon, the silver king of gamefish. And tehre is no better place to catch these chrome-bodied brutes than Boca Grande on the state's West Coast. Book now. This tiny fishing village gets crosded when the fish start running. |
| To New Orleans By Sea |
| Asked by William on January 06, 2011 |
| Q: Hi there, My friend and I are planning a trip around the Southern States of America this year. I am trying to find out what the possibility for travelling from Tampa, or anywhere on the West Coast of Florida, to New Orleans by sea is. I know it seems strange, but our plan is to start in Florida, and end back in Florida, this seems like a fun and different way to start, obviously travelling back on land through the different States. I'm just not sure if there is a route, if it's too dangerous or not possible at all. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Will |
|
A: That is a long trip, and one that will take you across open ocean. I would not attempt such a journey unless you are an experienced sailor and you have a boat that can handle rough seas. I would not venture out in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico in anything less than a 40-foot sailboat or a 30-foot, twin-engined powerboat with fuel bladders. |
| Bass and Tarpon in Miami |
| Asked by Gisela on December 26, 2010 |
| Q: Hello, our family want to go to Miami to fishing in the end of January. Our interest: Black Bass & Tarpon. Where is the best place to fish with child (6 years old)? Can you please recommend a good hotel also ? We are from Brazil. Thank you very much. |
|
A: Catching bass and tarpon in the same day will be quite a challenge. The best bass lake in South Florida is Lake Okeechobee. Bass legend Roland Martin's Marina has several good guides. As for tarpon, you will have to go to south to Florida Keys to catch thd silver king of gamefish. To find a guide, contact the Florida Guides Association. |
| Sailfishing Palm Beach in December |
| Asked by scott on November 22, 2010 |
| Q: i'm visiting west plam beach on dec 9 & 10. are there any marlin, sailfish or swordfish opportunities at this time of the year? if so, which charter co would you recommend? thanks. |
|
A: You are heading to Florida during the best time of the year to catch sailfish in the Atlantic Ocean. Palm Beach is the center of the sailfish action. Check out the Sailfish Marina. There are at least a dozen guides that work there: http://sailfishmarina.com/chaters.html. |
| Fishing St. Augustine |
| Asked by Patricia Diaz on November 20, 2010 |
| Q: What are the freshest catches of fish on the southeastern coast of Florida around the first two weeks of February? I'm planning a trip to St. Augustine in February and would like to have this information. Thanks in advance for your answer. |
|
A: If you plan to fish St. Augustine in February you will find the trout and red drum fishing in the Intracoastal waterway still productive, but you will be dealing with cooler water, and that means the fish will be in the deep holes and along the drop-offs that still hold warmer water. I would use any type of soft-bodied, plastic bait, but be sure to slow down your retrieve. |
| SKA Tournament In Ft. Pierce |
| Asked by Bill Benton on October 27, 2010 |
| Q: Do you plan to fish or at least cover the SKA tourney in Fort Pierce Next week? I'd sure like to hear all about it THanks Bill |
|
A: Bill, Don't plan to fish the torunament but we will post a blog to let people know that it is happening in case any kingfish anglers want to sign up at the last minutes. For results, go to www.fishska.com. TT |
| December Fishing in Florida |
| Asked by Wendy on October 22, 2010 |
| Q: I am coordinating a sales incentive trip for a dozen guys that want to go fishing in Florida. Can you tell me where the best deep sea fishing is in December? |
|
A: Your best bet is to head south to the Florida Keys. No matter which way the wind blows you will be able to find water to fish either in Florida bay, the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. To learn more, go to www.fla-keys.com to learn more. |
| Fishing Licenses |
| Asked by Carol on October 13, 2010 |
| Q: Hi, my husband and I live in kissimmiee florida and he loves to fish. one day he went fishing and didnt know that he needed a license for fresh water fishing so an officer gave him a $103.00 citation and couldnt even give my husband a warning and tell him to leave and next time to get a license... but no he gave it to him anyway.. so I happened to go on the fwc.com site and read about fishing licenses are exempt if you are on supplemental security income and have proof, so yes my husband is on a disability so do you think its possible that he can go to the court with the citation ticket and proof of his supplemental security income paper and he wont have to pay the ticket? what do you think? |
|
A: Carol, Florida's fishing license law is very complicated. Go to www.MyFWC.com and read through the section on fihsing licenses. As far as your husband's situation, I cannot comment. I am not an attorney. I suggest you consult a lawyer before you go to court. TT |
| Asked by al sorichetti on October 13, 2010 |
| Q: We will be celebrasting our 44th wedding anniversary this month and my wife always wanted to charter a boat for deep sea fishing. I would like to surprise her by doing just that but witha romantic twist champagne, gourmet food, etc. Can you help? We are in the Punta Gorda area this month. |
|
A: Al, I would contact the Florida Guides Association at www.florida-guides.com. I do not know of any fishing guide who specializes in romantic fishing encounters, but I am sure if you brought along your own champagne and gourmet food, they would be happy to oblige you. TT |
| Fishing licenses |
| Asked by pauline on September 12, 2010 |
| Q: Do i need a license and if so how much. |
|
A: Visitors and Florida residents are required to have both slat and freshwater fishng licenses. There are exceptions and prices vary depending on what you want to fish for etc. Your best bet is to go to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's website, www.MyFWC.com, and click on licenses and you will find all the information you need. |
| Fishing Siesta Key |
| Asked by Ron Coffey on September 06, 2010 |
| Q: Visiting Siesta Keys in two weeks. what kind of fish to catch this time of year? |
|
A: The fishing off Sarasota is very good this time of year. If you work the grass flats of Sarasota Bay, you should be able to catch some red drum. There are also still snook around the passes, but remember the season is closed and you must release what you catch. |
| Charts for the West Coast of Florida |
| Asked by Ron Coffey on September 06, 2010 |
| Q: Looking for a ocean map for area around Turtle Beach & Siesta Keys |
|
A: The best chartbook for the West Coast of Florida is made by MapTech. The company also publishes a series of WaterProof Chartbooks that are also helpful. You want the Clearwater to Captiva edition. Charts 12-15 will cover everywhere you want to fish. |
| Fishing St. Petersburg in November |
| Asked by earl collins on September 05, 2010 |
| Q: i will be in st. pete over thanksgiving. what can i fish for and can you recommend a good charter |
|
A: Good timing. You will be right smack dab int he middle of the fall kingfish run. Call Capt. Dave Mistretta with the Jaws Too at 727-439-2628 or e-mail him at jawstoo@msn.com. |
| Fishing charters |
| Asked by jamie eller on August 26, 2010 |
| Q: can you get me a list of fishing charters for the ocean |
|
A: Florida has great fishing from Pensacola to Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, all along the Florida Keys and up the Atlantic Coast from Miami to Jacksonville. You should try to narrow your search because a charterboat captain who specializes in yellowtail snapper off South Florida probably won't be able to take you fishing for red snapper off Northwest Florida. Once you have decided where you want to fish, then contact the Florida Guides Association at www.florida-guides.com to get a list of charter boat captains. |
| Fishing Pompano Beach |
| Asked by sam on August 19, 2010 |
| Q: terry my family will be going to pompano beach the first week of september, i love to surf and pier fish; ihave a whole lot of artificials and i like to use live bait also what and where do ou recommend thanks alot and by the way you have a great site here keep up the great work!!!!! |
|
A: The Pompano Beach Fishing Pier, also known as Fisherman's Wharf, and the Pompano Beach Fishing Pier are both good options. If you time it right you can catch snapper, snook, cobia, maybe even a barracuda or two. I would use any hard-bodied sinking plug that looks like a finger mullet. Bring what you have, but it is always best to match the hatch, or in other words, see what the locals are using then run to the nearest tackle store and buy a couple of lures. It never fails, whether you are fishing in Alaska or the Amazon, to trust local knowledge. |
| Boating and Dining in Miami |
| Asked by jdmorrill on August 17, 2010 |
| Q: Terry, I read through the Q & A page...all the way back to 2008...didn't see an answer for my question, but thanks for all the great info. Some friends and I will be in South Beach, Miami for Labor Day weekend. I have already reserved a 24' powerboat for that Sunday so that we can do some cruising. We don't plan on fishing since it is just a weekend visit. Where do you recommend we go cruising? Are there any restaurants/bars with boat slips that are good to stop at for a drink or a bite of food? Any other activities in the area during Labor Day weekend? Any advice is helpful. Thanks again. |
|
A: The Miami area is one fo the most popular boating destiantions in the U.S. There are endless possiblities of places to go to eat and drink. If I were you, I would buy a Maptech Chart Book and familiarize yourself with the area or at least stop at one of the local boating stores and buy some sort of local guide. With that said, I love to cruise the bay and South Beach. If you are looking for a low key place to dock and eat, try Shuckers Bar & Grill, at North Bay VIllage, 1819 N Bay Causeway, Miami. You can call them at 305-866-1570. |
| Fishing the Ft. Walton area |
| Asked by Joni on August 16, 2010 |
| Q: Hi Terry. My hubby and I will be in Ft Walton area Sept 3-5. I would like to surprise him with a fishing trip. He likes both salt and fresh water. Any suggestions for one or both in that time period? Thanks! |
|
A: You picked a great time of the year to fish the Ft. Walton and Destin area. September is one of the best months for offshore fishing. If I were you, I would head offshroe aboard the Swoop I or the Swoop II and fish for grouper, amberjack or perhaps even sailfish. For mroe information, go to www.swooppartyboat.com. |
| Florida's Waterways |
| Asked by Greg Walter on August 11, 2010 |
| Q: I am considering moving to Florida and want to live on the water (not coastal). However, I understand that a large majority of the inland waterways, rivers, canals, lakes, etc. have alligators and therefore it is not recommended for swimming, especially for small children. My concentration is the upper-half of Florida, Orlando area and northward. Is there any information available to guide me regarding which waterways are best for swimming, boating, and fishing (my three principal desires)versus those that are not? Also, I'd be interested in the level of "pollution" in the waterways as a factor as well, if also available. Thanks in advance for any information that can be shared. |
|
A: All of Florida's freshwater waterways are home to alligators as well as largemouth bass and a variety of panfish. There is no central data bas on the state's lakes, rivers and creeks, but suffice it to say all have good fishing, but as regards to boating access, I suggest you reserach each waterway individually. |
| Fishing Crystal River |
| Asked by Guy Lipsky on July 30, 2010 |
| Q: Hi My question is how far do i have to go out from crystal river to where it gets deep, like 30 -40 feet, we are new to boats coming from airplanes, any info will help thanks Guy & Frances |
|
A: Your best bet is to go get yoruself a chartbook becuase I would not recommend running anywhere up there without the proper navigational tools. Maptech makes an excelelnt chart book for the west coast of Florida and it also comes with a CD for your laptop. I don't know what kind of boat you have but you should also consider getting a combination GPS/Bottom Machine to stay away from those rockpiles. |
| Fishing at Disney |
| Asked by Debbie on July 30, 2010 |
| Q: Hello, I am a travel agent and I have a client staying at Disney and would like to go fishing one day on a boat, any suggestions? Thank you |
|
A: Walt Disney World has great freshwater fishing out of the Fort Wilderness Campground. The average bass per hour is much higher than most other lakes because it is strictly catch and release. You can either make reservations at the campground or walk up. There are several guides that work the lake and all are very good. |
| Party Boats in Jacksonville |
| Asked by Janet on July 15, 2010 |
| Q: We have a bunch of nieces and nephews who want to go ocean fishing when they visit. Is there a reasonably priced way to do that for a large family in JAX? |
|
A: Janet, If you have a large party of four or more people and you want to go fishing, I would suggest you hop aboard a group fishing or "party" boat. You will pay by the person, instead of renting the whole boat, which will help keep costs down. I have hear good things about the Mayport Princess. You can learn more at http://www.mayportprincessfishing.com/. TT |
| Kayaking for Scallops |
| Asked by Robert on June 29, 2010 |
| Q: Hello, I've got a kayak and would like to gather the limit in scallops this weekend. What would you suggest? Thanks. |
|
A: If you are looking for bay scallops this weekend, you will find them anywhere from Homosassa to Steinhatchee. The season opened early this year, and by all indications, it will be another banner year. But since you are in a kayak, remember to keep an eye out for boaters. Don't forget to fly your dive flag. |

| Boating Resources For Cape Coral |
| Asked by Marie on June 21, 2010 |
| Q: We are visiting Cape Coral in August. We rented a boat and plan to sail around the area. We have experience boating and fishing on midwest lakes and rivers but have never sailed on our own in the ocean. Can you refer me to a source for information about boating on the ocean? Good maps, places to visit, fishing areas, and places only available by boat. |
|
A: Marie, First, buy yourself a good hand-held GPS with a mapping program. Garmin makes one of the top units on the market. You may have to buy an additional chip for the West Coast of Florida. Then, buy a hard copy Maptech chart book for the same area. Plot a general course and then take it from there. Every hour you spend doing prior research will save you 10 hours on the water. Good luck. TT |
| Offshore Fishing in Jacksonville |
| Asked by Keith on June 18, 2010 |
| Q: Planning to take my sons fishing this weekend off the coast of Jacksonville. What's biting and what bait should we use? |
|
A: Go catch some kingfish. We are right in the middle of the run. There are tournaments almost every weekend this time of year. There is no substitute for live bait. You can rig mullet, blue runners, Spanish mackerel, threadfin herring, scaled sardines...you name it. The trick is to match the hatch. The bigger the bait, the bigger the fish. |
| Kayaking Lake Placid |
| Asked by maureen on June 09, 2010 |
| Q: I was woundering if there is a place to rent kayaks in Lake Placid fl thank you |
|
A: The main body of water in Lake Placid is Lake Istokpoga, one of the state’s best bass fishing lakes. At 27,000 acres, it is not an ideal kayaking lake. If you want to explore or fish Lake Istokpoga, you would be better off renting a bass boat. |
| Vacation in Orlando, but where to fish? |
| Asked by Crystal Barber on June 07, 2010 |
| Q: My family is wanting to visit Florida, we plan on going to Universal but my husband wants to fish. Where is a location close to make the entire family happy. Dad deserves to fish, and get at least a nibble before coming home. |
|
A: While visiting Universal, you can also fish at Disney World. Yes, the Magic Kingdom offers largemouth bass charters out of Fort Wilderness. For information, go to http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/recreation/fishing/. If you would like to go off campus, try fishing Lake Toho, one of the most productive largemouth bass fisheries in Florida. To learn more, go to www.bigtoho.com. |
| Fun in St. Petersburg |
| Asked by Kresha on June 07, 2010 |
| Q: What is there in St. Petersburg for families with young children to do fun, but inexpensive? |
|
A: If you are looking to have some fun in St. Petersburg and not spend a lot of money, you should head to Fort DeSoto County Park in Tierra Verde, about 15 miles south of downtown. They have two fishing piers, great swiming, windsurfing, kiteboarding and kayakaing. You can't go wrong. To learn more, go to http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_ft_desoto.htm. |

A: The new regulations in Boca Grande Pass "prohibit the use of more than three fishing lines per vessel to harvest any species of fish and prohibit the use of breakaway gear to harvest any fish in the pass during April, May and June. Breakaway gear is "any bob, float, weight, lure or spoon that is affixed to a fishing line or hook with wire, line, rubber bands, plastic ties or other fasteners designed to break off when a fish is caught." | Fishing the Keys |
| Asked by Mary on May 10, 2010 |
| Q: Hi Terry! Planning our first trip to Florida late Summer/early Fall. Planning to fly in (not sure of A/P yet), rent a car and drive down along coast to the Florida Keys. What is best month/time of year for great weather, and places to stay/visit for good fishing (will charter a fishing boat), scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking and general water activiities in the "Keys"? Plan to spend a week exploring the Keys and welcome any suggestions for a first time visitor. Greatly appreciate your advice - THANKS!! |
|
A: YOu can't go wrong in the Florida Keys when it comes to fishing and diving. Key Largo has the largest concentration of dive charters. It offers great access to the major wrecks...the Duane, Bibb and Spiegel Grove. You can head south to Islamorada and fish both the outer reefs for your open ocean species and Florida Bay for inshore species. From there you can fish and dive your way all the way to Key West. For more information, go to www.fla-keys.com. |
| Fishing Out of Orlando |
| Asked by Kevin MacPherson on May 07, 2010 |
| Q: Hello, I'll be in Orlando on business from May 10-14th and am looking for a place to go from the 14th to the 18th that is rustic and near or on the beach. Inexpensive would be nice and I'd like to stay within a 3 hr drive of Orlando. Fishing is a must. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks |
|
A: If you are looking for a rustic, "Old Florida" Fish Camp with a three hour drive of Orlando, try the River Palms Cottages & Fish Camp in Jensen Beach. The fishing is phenomenal and the lodgings are first rate as well. You even cook your catch after you fish. For information go to www.riverplamcottages.com. |
| Recreational Shrimping |
| Asked by Brooke on May 03, 2010 |
| Q: I saw a tv program last year that talked about a fishing tour that is held at night. The tour was for shrimp fishing at night using a light. I think that it was in the orlando area. Do you know any place that does this fun fishing at night? |
|
A: There are many places in Florida where recreational anglers can catch shrimp. The most common method is with a dip net when the shrimp are "running" in local rivers, including the St. Johns, and most large estuaries. While I don't know of any fishing guides that specialize in this type of fishing, most charter boat captains know how to catch shrimp. I am sure that some would be willing to take you for a fee. |
| How to Become an Outdoors Writer |
| Asked by Amy L. Adams on April 30, 2010 |
| Q: Hi Terry, great stories and videos! Really love them :) You do a really good job. Can you please let me know how you landed this job? i.e. get paid to do what you love the most. This is awesome. I would like to follow in your footsteps and do something like this :) Please let me know. Regards, Amy L. Adams |
|
A: Many outdoors/fishing writers start their careers as fishing guides or boat captains and then learn how to write. Others, myself included, take a more traditional approach. I studied mass communications at the University of South Florida, and then worked in the news departments at several different newspapers before becoming an outdoors writer. Thirty years and a master's degree later, I am still at it. |
| Fishing Islamorada |
| Asked by Jeanne Carmichael on April 27, 2010 |
| Q: My husband and sons want to do flats and deep sea fishing, we also have a 3 year old daughter, so I want to be at a nice hotel to play at the pool with her. Is it realistic to stay in Key Biscayne and fish in Islamorada? We'll be staying 6 nights. thanks! |
|
A: That is at least an hour driver between Key Biscayne and Islamorada if you take traffic into consideration. There is great fihsing inthe Florida Keys. You can fish the flats and go offshore inthe same day. But you might spend more time commuting than you will fihisng. I suggest booking a room in Key Largo. |
| Blue Water Diving |
| Asked by Jack Vieira on April 18, 2010 |
| Q: Hey Terry, I want to do my first blue water dive. Fish for tarpon, trout and others. Boca Grande area or should I just head south the Keys, Biscayne area? We will be down sometime in the first half of May. Also if I am going to be down in the winter where would be a good place to fish? Thanks Jack |
|
A: If you want to dive and fish on the same trip, your best bet is to head to the Florida Keys. When you speak of "blue water diving" I assume you are talking about depths of 130 feet, the limit for recreational diviers. If that is the case, head to Key Largo and dive the Speigel Grove or perhaps even the Duane and the Bibb, all serious wreck dives for advanced divers. Then, after you have gotten the diving out of your system, head over to Bud 'N Mary's Marina in Islamorada and get your self a tarpon guide and go fish Florida Bay. |
| Fishing St. Augustine |
| Asked by Jesee on April 12, 2010 |
| Q: is there any fishing in the St Augustine/St. Augustine Beach area? We are taking a family vacation the last week of April/first week of May, and my husband woulod like to do some fishing. |
|
A: The inshore fishing in St. Augustine is phenomenal in late April and early May. I would target both red drum and spotted sea trout with artificials or live bait. Light tackle is the key. One way to approach it is to rent a sea kayak and fish the sheltered waters of the Intracoastal Waterway. |

| Fishing Cape San Blas |
| Asked by Dan on April 02, 2010 |
| Q: Going to Cape San Blas, have not fished much in the bay/from the beach. What kind of bait will i need and how do i bait it on the hook, where is a good place to fish in the area? |
|
A: St. Joseph Bay has great inshore fishing. The trout bite is phenomenal. Head offshore and you will find the action equally exciting. There are probably a dozen different species of fish you can catch inshore and offshore. The bait you use will be determined by the species you are pursuing. If you want to catch trout, use a topwater plug that resembles a scaled sardine or threadfin herring. If you want to catch grouper offshore, use cut bait to start then switch to live pinfish once the bite gets going. Can you reprhase yoru questions and be a little more specific? Do you plan to fish inshore or offshore. From a boat or land? And most importatnly, what to you want to catch? |
| Fishing in September and October |
| Asked by mike on April 01, 2010 |
| Q: what kind of fishing in september and october |
|
A: Florida is a big state with 7,700 lakes, 10,550 miles of rivers and 2,2276 miles of tidal shoreline that straddles the temperate and sub-tropical zones. September and October are two of the best months for fishing because you can catch virtually everything that swims this time of year. But what is biting in Pensacola may not be biting in Key West. With that said, here is what you can expect to catch somewhere inthe state: bass, crappie, catfish, perch, gar, grouper, snapper, tarpon, cobia, ambejack, sailfish, marlin, amberjack, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, snook, redfish, trout, permit and pompano to name just a few. |

A: There is a boat ramp at Tarpon Bay Outfitters on Sanibel. Once you reach Sanibel, turn right on Periwinkle Way. Travel approximately 2 1/2 miles past the shops and restaurants. Turn right on Tarpon Bay Road and follow the dirt road to the Tarpon Bay Explorers concessionaire. The ramp fee is $7. |

| Peacock Bass |
| Asked by Howard Smith on March 01, 2010 |
| Q: Have fished with a Guide twice in and around Maimi, only caught them up to 3#, where can I find a guide for Large Peacock Bass |
|
A: Howard, Peacock bass are not native to Florida. They are a South American species that was introduced in the mid 80s and have done relatively well in the freshwater canals in and around Miami and Fort Lauderdale. I assume you mean you have caught fish up to three pounds. The state record is just over nine pounds. If you want to catch one that big, you will have to put some time into it. Check out TT |
| Fllorida Fishing |
| Asked by Trent Koscielny on February 28, 2010 |
| Q: I will be bringing a group of customers to Florida in either November or February. Are there any fishing opportunities at that time of year? |
|
A: The fishing is good in Florida all year long. With more than 7,700 lakes, 10,550 miles of rivers and 2,276 miles of tidal shoreline, Florida has no shortage of places to fish. So it is no wonder that the state has produced more than 900 world records, more than any other state or country for that matter. So what are you waiting for? Get your rod, reel and hit the water. | Looking for a charter |
| Asked by Jana on February 25, 2010 |
| Q: My family will be in Florida in May for vacation. My husband wants a day for fishing. He is looking to go on a charter to either go spearfishing, shrimping fly fishing or fishing for some decent size and tasting fish. He is not your average fisherman. Are there any really good charters he can go one? Thank you |
| A: It is hard to find a captain that will take you spearfishing, flyfishing, shrimping and fishing on the same trip. Most charter boats specialize in one of the previously mentioned areas. Your best bet is to contact the Florida Guides Association at www.florida-guides.com. You may have to narrow your search since most guides/charterboat captains work out of a specific area. Florida is a big state. A guide who runs trips on Tampa Bay probably won't be able to help you if you want to fish the Florida Keys. |
| Fishing the Indian River Lagoon |
| Asked by Todd Stevens on February 24, 2010 |
| Q: going to be in Smyrna area the third week of march.I would love to fish the inland waters with a guide any suggestions? |
| A: The Indian River Lagoon, The Banana River and the Mosquito Lagoon area all have great trout and redfishing. There are dozens of good guides that work those waters. Some specialize in light tackle; others in fly fishing. Contact the Florida Guides Association at www.florida-guides.com and they will be able to hook you up (no pun intended) with a reputable captain. |

| Peacock Bass |
| Asked by Zenon Sikora on February 23, 2010 |
| Q: I am in Bradenton and my son and granson want to come down from Canada & go for Peacock bass. In light of the great numbers of fish that have died, where should we go and what type of fish should we go for & should we be looking at fresh or salt water? Many thanks for your help. |
| A: You won't find peacock bass in Bradenton. This is a tropical species and it cannot be outside of South Florida. If you would like to catch largemouth bass, the species Florida is most famous for, try the Myakka River in Sarasota County or Lake Tarpon in Pinellas County. |
| Fishing the Gulf Coast |
| Asked by Janet Avendano on February 18, 2010 |
| Q: Will be in orlando from april 2-10.would like to stay a few days somewhere else april 2-7 on the gulf coast side. looking for great fishing from tampa to cape coral any recommendations where to stay. |
|
A: April is perhaps the best month of the year to fish the West Coast of Florida. The Tampa Bay area is particularly productive. Inshore, you can catch trout, redfish and snook. Offshore, you will find the grouper, amberjack and king mackerel fishing good as well. So, in short, you can go wrong visiting this part of the state. Stay in either Tampa or St. Petersburg. You can't go wrong. |
| Fishing Ostego Bay |
| Asked by alice mills on February 13, 2010 |
| Q: What tips can you for Ostego bay fishing for someone new to the local area who enjoys backcountry, flats type fishing in early march this year? |
|
A: March is my favorite month to fish the flats, especially in Southwest Florida. The waters of Ostego Bay are known for big redfish. Since the water is generally warming that time of year, the fish are more active and ready to eat. I would fish any type of structure, natural or manmade, with either hard-bodied plugs or soft, plastic jigs. Pick a strong tide, outgoing or incoming, and you won't go wrong. |
| Alligator Snapping Turtles |
| Asked by John Rickert on February 03, 2010 |
| Q: I would like to catch a alligator snapping turtle.Can I legally do this? |
|
A: The short answer is no. New rules governing freshwater turrtles went into effect in July 2009. The new regulations "prohibit the take, transport or possession of any imperiled species of freshwater turtle listed as a species of special concern, threatened or endangered, including alligator snapping turtles, Barbour's map turtles or Suwannee cooters." |
| Fishing Islamorada |
| Asked by Greg Livermore on February 02, 2010 |
| Q: A couple of questions, 1) what is the easiest way and cost effective way of getting down to Islamorda from Orlando? 2) I have 5/6 days for fishing, is it worth going with a package or picking a guide when I arrive? |
|
A: The quickest and easiet way to get from Orlando to Islamorada is to rent a car. There is no easy public transportation. It can be hard at times to plan a trip a week long, fishing every day, so you would probably be better off heading down and looking for a guide on a day by day basis at some place like Bud & Mary's Marina. In these tough economic times, many a guide is willing to make a deal. |
| Fishing the Gulf Coast in March |
| Asked by CHARLES PENSEL on January 29, 2010 |
| Q: What kind of fish are available in the middle of March and where are they available? Planning on visiting the Gulf. |
| A: March is the best time of the year to catch Kingfish and Spanish mackerel. The Tampa Bay area and Sarasota have great kingfish mackerel bites in March. You will find plenty of captains willing to take you out. If you are lucky, the fish will be hanging close to shore and you will be able to hook a 50 pounder within sight of the beach. |
| Fishing the St. Pete and Treasure Island Bridges in March |
| Asked by bill kessler on January 28, 2010 |
| Q: In early March, what would you recommend for fishing off Sunrise Bridge near St. Pete or around Treasure Island? |
| A: Tha Spanish mackerel should begin to show again in March. You can't go wrong fishing any bridge in the Tampa Bay with anything silver and shiny. Mackerel spoons are the best all-around artificial for these fish. |
| Shark Fishing |
| Asked by Nancy on January 27, 2010 |
| Q: We will ne there on the 5th of February and want to shark fishing is that possible? |
| A: February is not the best month for shark fishing in Florida. These warm water predators typically are caught during the summer months. Many charterboat captains do not like to take their clients shark fishing because these often misunderstood creatures are either overfished or technically listed as threatened or endangered. |
| Fall Fishing in Florida |
| Asked by Gail on January 26, 2010 |
| Q: What is it best to fish for in the fall--Oct/Nov, in Florida and where? Thanks |
| A: October and November are two of the best months for fishing in Florida, from Jacksonville on the East Coast down to Miami and out to Key West then back up the West Coast all the way to Pensacola. You can catch trout and redfish inshore, king mackerel on nearshore artificial reefs and grouper, amberjack and snapper offshore. Take your pick. You can't go wrong. |
| Charlotte County Fishing Piers |
| Asked by Terry Hanley on January 25, 2010 |
| Q: I'm coming in to Port Charlotte from Canada for the wounded worriers tatoo on Feb.6 and was wandering were I could rent some takle and the closest fishing spot for me seeing I will not have a car. Thanks for your time. |
|
A: Without knowing where you are staying, this is hard to answer. In general, most piers don't rent tackle. Your best bet is to buy a lightweight, medium-action, two-piece spinning outfit and bring it with you. You can then check out the pier at Gallagher Boulevard and Spire Street. Call the Charlotte County Parks and Recreation Department for more information, 941-625-7529. |
| Sarasota in May |
| Asked by Kevin Mack on January 23, 2010 |
| Q: My family and I are planning a trip to sarasota in may. What activities are availible this time of year ? I would like to find entertainment for our 18 year old daughter.Any info would be greatly appreciated ! Thank you - The Mack Family |
| A: May is one of my favorite months for fishing the West Coast of Florida. You will be able to catch (and release) snook, one of the best fighting fish in Florida, as well as red drum, trout and tarpon inshore. Offshore, the grouper, snapper and amberjack bite is in full swing. This is also a great month to go scuba diving. The visibility is generally pretty good and the water is warm, no wetsuit required. It is also a great time to sea kayak or ride personal watercraft. You can basically take your pick of all the water sports. Enjoy! |
| Key Largo to Key West |
| Asked by Renae Couch on January 22, 2010 |
| Q: We are coming from Illinois and are planning on driving to Key Largo then taking our boat from Key Largo to Key West. This will be our first trip in the ocean on our boat. We are looking for nautical maps, advice on the best route to take, maps of the area, brochures, information and tips for all aspects of our trip. From where to stay in Key Largo and Key West to where to eat, shop, sights to see, and any tips for our excursion in the ocean. |
| A: Your best bet is to get the Maptech Chart Book for the Florida Keys. It has a CD rom that goes along with it. It has all the information you need for pre-planning your trip. But you should still buy the regional navigational chip for your GPS. Most of the newer programs have all the marinas, boat ramps, fuel stops etc. SInce this is your first trip in the ocean, I would stick to the Intracoastal Waterway (Florida Bay). The route is well marked and sheltered from significant wave action of the open ocean. |

We both love seafood and boating please help give advise about where to stay and go fishing. We have a 2nd home in Hudson and are getting married in Longboat Key. I have never been to the keys and would like to see them. |
| A: Key West is a great place to take a honeymoon and go fishing. You will find several five-star resorts and the best fishing captains working the city's charterboat row. I don't know of any captains who target shark exclusively. Most shark species are listed as threatened or endangered due to overfishing. But I am sure that once you are down there, the concierge at your hotel will be able to hook you up (no pun intended) with a captain who works with the resort. |
| Trips to Key West |
| Asked by Teresa Christie on January 10, 2010 |
| Q: What copanies offer the boat trip to key west? |
| A: The Key West Express offers ferry service between Fort Myers Beach or Marco Island and Key West. You can reach them at 888-539-2628 or visit www.seakeywest.com. The trip takes about four hours from Fort Myers and is quite enjoyable. |
| Fishing Vacation |
| Asked by Darlene Swain on January 08, 2010 |
| Q: We are looking for a place to fish (not deep sea) in southern florida in feb. but also it is a vacation its just centered around fishing, |
| A: If you are looking to plan a fishing vacation in Florida during the month of February, I would head to the Florida Keys. The weather is usually fantastic that time of year and you will have the option of fishing the offshore reefs or the sheltered waters of Florida Bay. You can even start your trip in Islamorada and then follow the highway down to Key West, fishing as you go. |
| Fishing off Sarasota in January |
| Asked by Rusty on January 06, 2010 |
| Q: What type of Salt water surface fishing is on the gulf coast near the Sarasota area, Like dorado, wahoo, Tuna, etc |
|
A: If you want to go fishing for dolphin, tuna and wahoo this time of year, you will have to travel much farther south. Those are subtropical and tropical species, and with the water temperature hovering in the 50s, you won't find them close to shore. If you want to fish in January, you are much better off going for some deep-water species, such as gag or red grouper. |

| A: The Lauderdale Yacht Club has vibrant competitive yacht racing scene. The club, founded in 1938, hosts a variety of regattas. The club plans to host a race to Key West on Jan. 12, and then on Jan. 22, there is the 2010 Bommerang Regatta. Go to the club's website at www.lyc.org and when you click on the notice of each race, you might be able to find the name of boats looking for experienced crew. You can also check the Fort Lauderdale Marine Directory, http://www.fort-lauderdale-marine-directory.com/sail_only.php, and see if there is anybody looking for crews. |
| Charts for Fort Lauderdale |
| Asked by Carl Parisien on December 20, 2009 |
| Q: Where can I find detailed maps of the canals in the Ft-Lauderdale area, more specifically Margate. |
| A: There are several companies that make nautical charts for the East Coast of Florida. You can go to you local marine supply store and buy a NOAA chart for the area in question, or you can get a chart book that will give you a greater perspective. I find the Maptech products to be most helpful. The chart kit for Region 7, Florida's East Coast and The Keys, sells for $129.99 and will give you everything you need. It is available online or any marine supply store. |
| Deep Sea Fishing on Orlando Vacation |
| Asked by Kim Holser on December 19, 2009 |
| Q: My extended family and myself are traveling to Orlando in February, not all are interested in the theme parks. My brother and dad are avid fishermen from Ohio, and have would love to go deep sea fishing for Marlin, or something similiar. Do you have any suggestions? Also, what are other "must sees" for someone like them? Thank you for your time! |
| A: Florida has many great fishing opprtunities in February. You can catch largemout bass in any of the freshwater lakes around Orlando. You can also drive to either coast and catch a variety of sportfish, unfortuantely, marlin is not one of them. You may be able to snag a sailfish if you head south to Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami or the Florida Keys. Sailfishing tends to be good during the winter months, and although not as large as marlin, this species of billfish can still put up a heck of a fight. |
| Bahamas by boat |
| Asked by Ramona on December 02, 2009 |
| Q: My boyfriend and I will spend our winter holidays in Florida. We would like to know if we can reach the Bahamas via boat easily and if we could take a cruise in the Caribbean on the spot? |
|
A: You can reach the Bahamas by boat, but even the relativley short, 50-mile trip from Miami to Bimini should only be attempted by experienced boaters. You will need a twin-engine vessel with adequate fuel capacity that can make an ocean crossing. The Gulf Stream can get pretty rough during the winter months and I would not attempt such a trip in anything smaller than a 30-foot boat, unless you get an extended weather forecast (three days or more) calling for calm seas. With that said, make sure you have charts and good marine electronics, i.e., GPS. It would also be a good idea to bring along an EPIRB, but if you are an experienced boater, you probably already have one aboard your vessel. If not, you can rent one from Boat U.S. for the length of your trip. |
| Shuttle to Key West |
| Asked by Dory Beatrice on November 20, 2009 |
| Q: Do you know of any hydroplane service from Sanibel Island or Fort Myers to the Keys? |
| A: There is a shuttle from Fort Myers Beach, Marco Island and Key West. There are several high-speed catamarans that make the trip, but I am sorry to say that they are not hydroplanes. A one-way trip takes about three and a half hours, depending on sea conditions. For more information, go to http://www.seakeywest.com. |
| Cruising the coast of Florida |
| Asked by Jennifer on November 06, 2009 |
| Q: My husband and I would like to visit FL next year. Is it possible to rent a small boat and cruise the coastline of FL? What would it cost to rent a small boat for 2-3 days? |
| A: Florida has dozens of great places to rent boats. But when you say you want to rent a small boat, how small is small? I would not want to sleep aboard a vessel that is less than 30 feet in length. Many companies that rent boats that size require that you rent by the week, not the day. With that said, I think you should count on spending at least $400 a day on the rental fee, which does not include fuel. You may also have to show prior boating exeperience, such as proof that you have completed a boating safety course. |
| Marinas near Ocala |
| Asked by Matt Perkins on October 25, 2009 |
| Q: We live in Michigan and have relatives by Ocala, FL. This Year we purchased a 26' Sailboat and we thought it would be fun to trailer it down in the winter and put it in a marina for a month or so on the gulf side of the state. We don't anything about costs or what marina would be best. We would like to be as close as possible to our relatives. Where should we start? |
| A: Yankeetown, about an hour's drive from Ocala, will probably be your best bet for Gulf access. You should contact the Yankeetown Marina at 352-447-2529 or visit their website at www.yankeetownmarina.com. Most marinas charge by the foot. |
| Fishing Sanibel Island |
| Asked by MichelleLebo on October 25, 2009 |
| Q: My son and I are planning a trip to Sanibel Island, Florida the middle of December. We would like to go fishing while we are there. I'm not sure of deep sea or smaller water fishing. Is there a certain kind of fish in at that time? Where do I look for some rental guides, to go for a trip. Would you book ahead of time or is there a boat dock where you can go and pay for someone to take you out? Is there a site on the internet to go on to see what is available for the time we are planning to visit? I would appreciate and information I can get. Thanks for any help. |
| A: December can be a little tricky when it comes to weather so I would not recommend booking an offshore charter in advance. It would probably be better to plan to fish inshore or on the flats. You could target snook, redfish and trout that time of year. No matter what the weather does, you should be able to find a sheltered place to fish in the backcountry. Contact the Florida Guides Association at www.florida-guides.com and ask if they have any guides in that area. |
| Fort Lauderdale Charter Boat Fishing |
| Asked by Kevin Bertrand on October 23, 2009 |
| Q: My friends and I are planning to visit Fort Lauderdale for this year's annual boys trip. None of us have every been deep sea fishing. Can you recommend a good charter or guide to take us out, Thank you. |
| A: Fort Lauderdale has one of the largest sportfishing fleets in the state. Times are tough for fishing captains so your best bet is to wait until you get there, walk the dock and try to find a deal. If you don't like that idea, try the Flamingo. I have heard good things about this boat. |
| Sunset Cruise |
| Asked by Betsy Lowery on October 22, 2009 |
| Q: I'm working to arrange a sunset cruise for a group of 12 to 16 adults (church college retreat) on Dec. 17 or 18. I have emailed various charters found online but haven't come up with more than one who has responded. I'd like to have more options if you can steer me toward a directory or a likely charter. Thank you! |
| A: Florida is a big state, and I am not sure where you are planning to go, but if you are open minded, I'd say head to Key West for the best sunset in the world. There are more than a dozen various sunset cruise operations in the city. One of best resources is Key West Sunset Sails. |
| Guide questions |
| Asked by Amy on October 19, 2009 |
| Q: Terry, we recently booked a tarpon fishing trip to the fla. keys. When we didn't agree with the equipment the guide uses, he cancelled our reservation. Are they allowed to do this? Isn't there any code of ethics? What can be done about this? We will never visit Florida again!amy |
| A: There is no group that oversees charter boat captains, other than the U.S. Coast Guard, which is primarily concerned about safety issues. It sounds like you had a disagreement about tackle and tactics. You can contact the Florida Guides Assocation, www.florida-guides.com, and see if he is a member. But don't let one bad experience leave you with a bad impression. Florida has hundreds of great tarpon guides. The FGA will help you find one. |

| Q: I'm trying to find a premiere consumer fishing event (show, tournament, etc.) in Florida for 2010 and wanted to see if you could help. Looking forward to your reply. |
|
A: The Florida Sportsman shows, which are held all around the state, are top notch. Go to http://www.floridasportsman.com/shows. These fishing-boating shows have excellent speakers. They are well worth a try. |

| Boating Cocoa |
| Asked by rita youngs on September 30, 2009 |
| Q: I want to attend the coco beach airshow by boat. traveling the intercoastal north from sabastian, can I get directions on where to go out to the ocean in coco. thank you |
| A: You will either need to buy a chip for your GPS that highlights the east coast of Florida or buy the nautical charts for Indian River Lagoon, Banana River and Merritt Island. You also have special security zones for Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center. You can't really "get directions" for such a long route - you need the charts. Another option isto take the outside route. |
| Boating around Pine Island |
| Asked by Mac on September 22, 2009 |
| Q: My wife and I are coming down in Jan for a couple months. We plan on being on Pine Island. What kind and size boat would we need to do some fishing around the islands and do some beach hopping? We were on Key Largo last winter and the water was really shallow on the ocean side. Is boat operation as difficult around Pine Island and Ft. Meyers area? Thanks |
| A: The most functional boat for the West Coast of Florida, from Key West to Pensacola, is a "bay boat" in the range of 20- to 23-feet with a 175 to 200 hp engine. These shallow running, center consoles have enough freeboard to handle a 2- to 3-foot chop, yet still run (on plane) in less than a foot of water. The most important piece of equipment will be your GPS/Bottom machine. Make sure it has a good mapping program so you can see where the shallow grass beds are. A standard chart will also work, but then that limits you to the marked channels. |
| December fishing |
| Asked by Clare on September 21, 2009 |
| Q: My dad and I are coming to Florida for 1-2 weeks over Christmas and we'd like to do some fishing. I am having trouble finding a website that says which fish are available in December. We will be in the Port Charlotte area and would be willing to go south towards the Everglades region as well. Can you help with this question, or direct me a site that has this sort of info? Thanks!Clare |
| A: If you travel to Southwest Florida in December, you should have your pick of the inshore species. You can catch trout, redfish and snook if you know how to work the warmer pockets of water. The key is to try to plan your outing in between the cold fronts. As a general rule, when fishing cooler water with artificial lures, slow down your retrieve. The colder the water, the slower your retrieve. |
| Kayak and surf fishing near Melbourne |
| Asked by Andy Nicholson on September 11, 2009 |
| Q: We will be in the area of Melbourne Beach during February and March. I kayak and surf fish. What are some opportunities during our stay there? Thanks for your attention. |
| A: You are in luck. You will be near one of the best kayak fishing spots in the world. The Indian River Lagoon, which is comprised of three different waterways (the Indian and Banana rivers and Mosquito Lagoon). The trout and red drum fishing are both excellent. You can use any artificial lures, from jigs to topwater plugs. There is not much tidal flow in some areas, so weather is more of a factor when picking a time to fish. |
| Boating near Ocala |
| Asked by julie hand on September 06, 2009 |
| Q: my husband and i have a few days off this week. we have a nice 19ft sunbird and i was wondering where there is some nice spots to put he in. we live in ocala and have pets so we dont want to go too far away. thank you julie |
| A: If you are looking for a good boating adventure, consider putting in down at Yankeetown or Cedar Key. Both places offer good access to the Gulf of Mexico. Be sure to bring the proper charts and/or a GPS with a mapping program. It should take roughly an hour to get to either location. If you want to do some inshore boating, try Lake George which is part of the St. John's River system. |
| Top fishing spots in Florida |
| Asked by Laura on August 31, 2009 |
| Q: Hi Terry! I want to surprise my husband with a fishing trip and want him to be impressed with my research. What are the TOP Florida spots for charter fishing? |
|
A: I assume you are asking about saltwater fishing destinations. When it comes to choosing where to fish, season is more important than destination. Here is a brief break down of what you can catch when and where: January/February March/April May/June July/August September/October November/December |
| Fishing Fort Walton |
| Asked by DeLayne on August 27, 2009 |
| Q: My husband and family have been going to the Fort Walton/Okaloosa Island area for the past few years in October. We are going this year the week of Oct 5th through Oct 11th. He wants to do a day of deep sea fishing with not to many people (8-10). There are a ton of companies to choose from in that area. Do you know of a good group to take us out? My husband is fairly frugal but really wants to go. |
|
A: When it comes to charter boats, you have two choices: You can either hire a captain with a "six pack" license, which means he can take up to six passengers; or you can go out on a "party" or "head" boat with as many as 50 people or more on board. A private charter (six or less) will probably run you $750 to $1,000 depending on how far out the captain has to travel to find fish. It is possible to go down to the docks and negotiate with a captain and see if they are willing to split the charter two or three ways reducing your cost to $200 or $300. But that is something that has to be done in person. Hope this helps. |
| Florida's Inland Rivers |
| Asked by peter hoffman on August 16, 2009 |
| Q: where can i get information on boating trips on floridas inland rivers |
|
A: The only two inland waterways that have group boat excursions are the St. Johns and the Silver River. Most of the other rivers are too small to handle large, commercial vessels. Check out http://www.rivershipromance.com for a trip down the St. Johns. As for the Silver River, you will need to first get into the amusement park so you can get on the glass-bottom boat tour. For information, go to http://www.silversprings.com.

| February fishing |
| Asked by David Muldoon on August 14, 2009 |
| Q: HI:We plan to be in Florida the middle part of Febuary. What would be the area that would have the best off shore fishing at that time. What would be the best type of fish to fish for in the middle of Feb.Thanksdjm |
| A: February is perhaps the slowest month for offshore fishing in Florida, thanks to the winter cold fronts that come rolling down the Eastern seaboard. Your best bet is to travel south and fish anywhere from Miami to Key West. If it is rough, you might be able to troll for sailfish. If it is calm, you can anchor up and bottom fish for a variety of species. |
| Scalloping St. Joe's Bay |
| Asked by Kerigan on August 14, 2009 |
| Q: St. Joseph Bay is on of FLorida most pristine bodies of water. I hear offers the best scalloping in the state. Can you provide us any information on that area? |
| A: St. Joe's Bay has great scalloping. You can put in at the state park, but just be mindful of the shallow sea grass beds. You are allowed to scallop as far west as the Mexico Beach canal. So you are right on the border. Keep that in mind. You can't land your catch west of that line. |
| Inflatable boats |
| Asked by Pedro J. on August 04, 2009 |
| Q: Dear Sir or Madam,I would like to buy an inflatable boat (zodiak type) to get on the water, I live in Miami, and will use it with 2 to 4 people (wife and kids) my question is where can I go with it? Meaning I have to stay in canals or the bay with it? Can I visit some keys with it? my concern is safety!Thank you for your help, |
| A: Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) are favored by many in the military and law enforcement. But these vessels tend to be more expensive than comparable, recreational, fiberglass hulls. For all-purpose family fun, I would go with a standard skiff, something wth high gunwhales. You will get more bang for your buck. |
| Fishing licenses |
| Asked by brian on August 02, 2009 |

| Florida boating |
| Asked by Cathy on July 29, 2009 |
| Q: I was just wondering where is the best location in Florida for boating if you live there? Not a vacationer.... |
| A: With more than 2,276 miles of tidal shoreline, 7,700 lakes and 10,550 miles of rivers, Florida has endless boating opportunities. But with that said, the answer is simple. The best place to boat is the most convenient place to boat. If you live in Vero Beach, you are not going to drive to Tampa on a Saturday morning to go for a boat ride. The idea is to just get out and enjoy the water. Conevenience is the key. The closer the boat ramp, the more often you are likely to use it. |
| Marlin fishing |
| Asked by Lynn on July 29, 2009 |
| Q: Good morning I have Clients who are interested in blue marlin fishing. Please could you advise the best time of year, and the best area with the greatest chance of catching marlin? This would determine the date of their holiday. I would be grateful for your advise on this matter, and would appreciate your prompt reply. Many thanks. RegardsLynnLIBERTY TRAVEL |
| A: Key West is the place to fish for blue marlin, but moon phase, weather and season are factors that need to be considered when booking an offshore trip. During the spring and early summer, the fish tend to be smaller, 100 to 250 pounds, and closer to shore. From August through December, the fish tend to be larger and further offshore, where weather can more of a factor. The typical angler might spend 24 hours trolling to catch one fish. So that translates to three, eight-hour days of fishing. So if you book a captain, take that into consideration. Your chances of success are better if you plan to fish three days instead of one. |
| Bass fishing |
| Asked by john on July 28, 2009 |
| Q: hi,we are thinking of going to orlando in febuary, could you suggest any fishing for big mouth bass. regards john |
| A: You should be right in time for the pre-spawn frenzy. I would check out Lake Toho, located about a half hour outside of Orlando. Contact the Big Toho Marina at www.bigtoho.com. They have a great group of guides and the best cheeseburgers in town. Watch my latest video to really get the picture. |
| Fishing in Tampa |
| Asked by Mark Koller on July 18, 2009 |
| Q: Hi, My family and I will be in the Tampa area in mid August. We will probably do some beach bumming and I am wondering if there is any kind of fishing that I can do from shore while the kids are swimming and playing? What license is required and where is a good place for rental gear/bait? Or would artificials work just as good. I really don't care what I catch, just hope to hook something...Thanks, Mark |
|
A: Mark, If you want to fish the beach, it sounds like you are not staying in Tampa. So I'll assume that you are flying into the airport there and vacationing in Pinellas County, which is across the bay. If so, your best bet this time of year is snook. You will need a license. Go to www.MyFWC.com and you will see that the price will vary depending on your length of stay. If you are set on live bait, try pinfish. You can catch them yourself with a cast net or call around to local bait shops until you find one that has them (once again, there are dozens of bait shops to choose from, depending on where you are staying). Another alternative, and probably the best, is to use artificial plugs. Any minnow-shaped, hard-bodied bait will do. As for a rod and reel, I don't know anybody who rents them (outside of the piers). So pick up a inexpensive spinning outfit, 12- to 15 pound test. Snook feed on a moving water, so be sure to check the tide chart. TT |

|

| Do I need a fishing license? |
| Asked by Joe Chikar on July 09, 2009 |
| Q: Is a Florida fishing license required by law to fish in the ocean? If so, how much is a non resident license? What could I expect to catch off of Navarre Beach in October? Thanks! |
| A: Fishing licenses are required in saltwater for both Florida residents and visitors. The price of a saltwater fishing license depends on your length of stay. For more information, go to www.MyFWC.com. As for what you will catch off Navarre Beach in October....I would pack a medium-action spinning rod, 8- to 12-pound test and try to pick up a few red drum. |

| Q: were coming to orlando the last week in dec 2009. fishing suggestions? |
| A: You should be just in time for some very good bass fishing. This is still the pre-spawn, but if you can time your expedition to right before or right after a cold front, your chances of success will increase. I would check out Lake Toho in Kissimmee. The Big Toho Marina will have everything you need and can hook you up with a guide. For more information, go to www.bigtoho.com. |

| Asked by Linda West on July 06, 2009 |
| Q: My husband is interesting in going deep sea fishing. We will be staying at a resort in Pompano Beach. What would be the best and closest place for him to go? |
|
A: Linda, You would probably have the best luck finidng a charter in Fort Lauderdale, which is just a short drive down A1-A. The conditions will not vary up or down the coast much this time a year. Most charter boats fish the Gulf Stream and you can catch everything from wahoo to snapper during the summer months. There are dozens of charterboats working out of Fort Lauderdale, but if you want a place to start, try All-Inclusive Sportfishing Charters at 954-761-8202. TT |

There is no comprehensive list of all the charterboats, but you can start with Bob Zales's fleet. He is a well-known captain and he has a very good reputation. However, charter rates are very high and I am looking for some group fishing tours out of Venice, Sarasota or nearby.I am willing to pay but find charter rates very high for two people. Can you please help? Thanks. |
| A: You will find more boats to choose from in Sarasota than you will in Venice. Most boats head to the same fishing spots in deep water regardless of their port of origin. Sarasota's Flying Fish Fleet has been around for a long time. You will find the boats at the Marina Plaza right in downtown Sarasota. | Florida fishing vacation |
| Asked by John on June 23, 2009 |
| Q: My wife and I are looking to go on a fishing trip in Florida between the middle and end of October. Is there a good resort that would include fishing (inshore and possibly offshore) (guided) as well as nice accommodations. |
| A: It is difficult, but not impossible, to fish for both inshore and offshore species in the same day. Your best bet is to pick a location that has access to both types of fishing and split your adventure into two days. The Florida Keys is an ideal place for such a trip. I would call Hawks Cay Resort and Marina on Duck Key. They have guides that work both the reef and the backcountry. Go to www.HawksCay.com or call 1-888-313-5749. |

A: Owen, The best bass lake near Clearwater is Lake Tarpon. Located about 20 minutes north, it is consistently ranked as one of the top ten bass fishing destinations in Florida. I would call Tarpon Tom's Bait and Tackle on U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor at 727-772-0708. Capt. Lenny Crispino is an excellent guide. TT |
| Fishing licenses |
| Asked by Clayton D Richardson on June 22, 2009 |
| Q: I'm 46 and my son is 15. We're from Texas. We are going to go to Florida soon, and are interested to go pier fishing, deep sea fishing, and perhaps surf fishing. We will be fishing on and off in Florida for seven days. What kind of license do we need Terry? |
|
A: Dan, Out-of-state anglers need a license to fish both fresh and saltwater. Your son, however, is exempt because he is under 16. If you decide to fish on a licensed pier (usually private), you will pay a fee and subsequently be exempt from the licensing requirements. For more information, go to www.MyFWC.com. TT

| Ferry to Key West |
| Asked by Barbara on June 21, 2009 |
| Q: is there any posssibility to go from miami by boat to key west (end of dezember), stay 1 or 2 nights and than go from key west to naoples or fort myers by boat ? should not be luxury, means to expensive!! thx 4 your help! |
|
A: Barbara, There is a ferry that goes from Fort Myers beach and Marco Island to Key West. But there is no public tranportation (via water) from Miami to Key West. Your best bet is to rent a car in Miami, leave it in Key West, then take the ferry to Fort Myers Beach. For more information on the ferry, go to www.seakeywestexpress.com. TT

| Great boating lakes |
| Asked by Bill Burns on June 20, 2009 |
| Q: I bought my retirement home this past March in Bradenton. I have a 18ft Crownline Bowrider Boat and I will be moving to my new home in about 19 months from now. I would like a list of suitable fresh water lakes to tube and water ski on with my kids and grandchildren near Bradenton/Sarasota. Thanks alot in advance. |
|
A: Bill, I am sorry to say that there is no list of water ski/tubing lakes in Florida. That is because access is on a case-by-case basis. You can go to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Comission's website and get a list of public boat ramps, maintained by the FWC, and then plan your trip accordingly. If I were planning a trip with my kids, I would stick to the Intracoastal Waterway and Sarasota Bay to tube and water ski. TT |
| The Dora Canal |
| Asked by carol on June 19, 2009 |
| Q: Where can we launch our kayak at Dora Canal? Anything you can tell us about the Dora Canal. we would really appreciate it- |
|
A: Carol, Once called the "most beautiful mile of water in the world," Lake County's Dora Canal is a popular wildlife viewing area. Numerous companies run organized tours on this waterway or you can head out on your own. Lake County has a very good website, www.lakecountyfl.gov/boating/the_dora_canal.aspx, that has everything you need to know about the Dora Canal and other recreational sites in Central Florida. TT |
| Pier fishing Panama City |
| Asked by Brian on June 11, 2009 |
| Q: I'll be in Panama City July 16-20 camping at St Andrews. I'd like to Fish off the pier but I've never been there before. Can you please give me some advice about what to expect, what pound test I should use, and what bait is best for summer peir fishing in that area? Thanks! |
| A: When pier fishing anywhere, you should bring at least two rigs. I would stick to spinning rods. The first should be medium action, 20-pound test, with at least 6 feet of leader material. Tie your 20-pound mono to a 2- to 3-foot section of 30, then tie that to the same length of 40 (if you feel it is needed). Rule of thumb: The murkier the water, the heavier you can go. But if if it clear, and you are not getting any hits, lighten up. Summer is a time of year when everything is biting. You can catch everything from kingfish to shark. I'd stop in the local tackle or bait shop and see what the locals are using for bait. Bring along a second rod - medium to light action - with 8- to 12-pound test, that you can use for jiging up bait fish. The key is to "match the hatch." |

| Asked by Chris on June 09, 2009 |
| Q: Going to be in orlando next week with the family doing the disney thing along with some fishing. Looking for a guide who does both flats fishing and deep sea as we would like to do both. Any suggestions on a guide on the gulf side close to clearwater? |
|
A: Chris, You are not likely to find a guide that can do both, because offshore boats cannot run inshore and inshore boats cannot run offshore. But if you are looking for a good flats guide, try Jim Huddleston at jim@captainhud.com, and for offshore, try Dave Mistretta at jawstoo@msn.com. TT

| A: The typical Florida weather forecast usually calls for showers at some point during the day. But rain passes quickly and the sun comes out right afterward, so don't let the chance of rain ruin your trip. Come on down! |
| Licenses for out of state visitors |
| Asked by Sue on June 04, 2009 |
| Q: What exactly are the rules for salt water fishing for out of state visitors? License required? How about a cane pole? What about kids? How about surf fishing? Thanks! :) |

If you are looking for a good inshore captain, try Paul Hawkins at www.flatsguy.com. | Migrating sealife |
| Asked by RhondaK on May 12, 2009 |
| Q: is there a website link or place I can find what fish/sealife are in a Florida place seasonally. Like I know tarpon are about to run up the West Coast ...Bay crabs will start floating in June or so...is there a master list of sealife migration and seasons I could look over? |
|
A: Rhonda, The short answer is no. There is no master list that outlines the seasonal changes in Florida's migrating marine species. But there are two good sources that may be of help. The first is the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation's Commission's website. It has pretty detailed species information, but you will have to search species by species. Go to www.MyFWC.com. Another option is the commission's research arm in St. Petersburg, www.floridamarine.org. The information there is a little more technical but very useful. TT |
| Wakeboarding Lakes |

| A: Take your pick, The Winter Haven Chain of Lakes is known for its great water skiing and wakeboarding. The Butler Chain in Orlando and the Harris Chain in Leesburg are also good options. In fact, Central Florida has been called the Wakeboard Capital of the World. Where are you driving from? |

| Asked by Paula on May 06, 2009 |
| Q: I am travelling to Florida in September and want to take a friend fishing. I want to give him a big surprise with the most action packed day i can find. Can you give me any advice about location - ocean, gulf, charters etc. - Non fishing Female seeks help ! |
| A: Florida is a big state. It would help to know where you are going, but with that said, I would recommend Key West. You can fish back bay (inshore) or offshore (blue water) in the same day. You will need two different guides, and expect to pay at least $1,000 for the two trips combined. September is a great month. Everything is biting. If you narrow your question, give me a location, or at least region, I can give a more specific answer. |
| Fishing St. Augustine |
| Asked by Bill Turner on May 05, 2009 |
| Q: Taking a family trip to Florida the 3rd week of July. We are staying in the St Augustine area, or the panhandle area. What spot would be the best for fishing on a charter? I would like to catch something larger in size rather than quantity.Thanks. |
|
A: If you are interested in catching a big fish, go after king mackerel. This open-ocean predator can be caught in good numbers on both coasts (Gulf and Atlantic) during the summer months. With a good captain, you can catch fish in the 20- to 30-pound range, and if you are lucky, you might hit a "smoker," a fish 40 pounds or larger. On 20-pound test, you will be in for the fight of your life. |
| Sunny Isles Beach |
| Asked by Kwith W. on May 02, 2009 |
| Q: Im planning a trip to Sunny Isles beach in the end of May. Coming from the northeast, I'm hoping for an amazing fishing experience during my trip last this month. Are my expectations too much? What type of equipment/tackle should I be prepared with? I virtually know nothing about fishing in the south so any words of advice would be valued greatly. Any weapons of choice? appropriate hook sizes? choice of baits? -many thanks in advance |
|
A: Keith, For starters, do you plan to fish from a boat or from land? If you plan to fish from land, you will be limited to birdge or pier fishing that time of year. You might be able to catch a snook if you fish at night. Arm yourself with a standard 7-foot, 12-pound test spinning outfit, and if possible use live bait. You will have a much better chance of catching fish if you hire a guide. The dolphin are running in the summer months just a few miles off shore. If you are lucky, you might also pick up a wahoo. The guide will have all the equipment you need so don't worry about bringing your own. TT |
| Rent a boat a go to the beach |
| Asked by Jennifer Jimenez on April 27, 2009 |
| Q: Where would be a good place to rent a boat and also go to the beach? |
| A: Clearwater: You can hire a boat and captain at the municipal marina and when you are done touring the Gulf of Mexico, just walk across the street to the beach. I don't know of another location in Florida that has a marina and beach so close together. |
| Fishing near Orlando |
| Asked by Katlin on April 27, 2009 |
| Q: Terry, This December my huband, another couple, and I will be staying near Orlando. We have never fished the ocean and it doesn't matter what we catch as long as we catch something! Do you have any suggestions on what kind of fishing would make our trip even more memorable? What fishing type ensures the most luck? Thank You |
| A: You have two choices: you can fish saltwater, but stay close to shore and work the shallow water, or what we call down here, fish the flats. From Orlando, your best bet will be head over to the Tampa/St. Pete area. Contact the Florida Guides Association. They can give you a referral. Or you could fish fresh water. A good choice would be Big Lake Toho in Kissimmee. |

| Q: Hi Terry,I would like to try fishing for largemouth bass from the shore around Lake Tarpon. What kind of tackle should I bring? Are there any other areas near Clearwater I could try? Thanks in advance,Paul |
|
A: Paul, That is going to be difficult, as much of the lake shore is privately owned. But if you do want to fish from the dock or boat ramp, use 12-pound test and any of a host of artificials...spinner baits, top water plugs, crank baits, rubber worms. Take your pick. TT' |
| FIshing both coasts |
| Asked by Chris Diamond on April 12, 2009 |
| Q: TerryWe will be visiting orlando for a week on june 13th. our plan is to do some deep sea fishing as well as inshore fishing. My thought was to fish the gulf side out of clearwater as well as the pacific side out of meritt island area. My question is would it be better to stay on one side rather than fishing both areas? What types of fishing is going on that time of year? I am an avid angler from Michigan and have fish alaska and many other areas, but have never fish in florida and would like some good information. You mension the charter web site, but there are so many to choose from am I to assume all are good and experianced? Any help would be appriciated as our time will be short and I would like to make the most of it.Thanks. |
|
A: Chris, If you want to fish both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, you could stay in Orlando. Or then again, you could book a room in the city where you plan to fish because you will probably have to be at the dock at day break in either case. As for what you can catch, during the height of the summer, you can catch just about everything. But the question is, do you plan to fish offshore, in deep water, or inshore, for coastal freshwater species? Once you have decided that, you need to contact the Florida Guides Association and talk to some guides, feel them out. There are dozens of possibilities, but you have to narrow your search. TT |

A: Lee, I am not sure what a "green" bass is. If you are planning to fish fresh water, you might be thinking of Florida's legndary largemouth bass, which do have a greenish/black tint. If so, your best bet would be to fish Lake Okeechobee. Check in at Roland Martin's Marina, www.rolandmartinmarina.com, in Clewiston. They have a full guide service. Terry |

| Q: Our family is planning to be Orlando & Keywest from May 21 - 27th. Our 18 y.o son is an avid fisherman & interested in Charter fishing. He says that arrangements need to be made in advance. What is the cost for these & which would you recommend? |
|
A: Wendy, Guides who fish close to shore, commonly called inshore or flats guides, typically charge anywher from @250 to $400 a day. Offshore guides, those charter boat captains who venture to deep water in search of larger fish, cost a bit more, anywhere from $500 to $1,500 a day, depending on the species targeted. You can start by contacting the Florida Guides Association at www.florida-guides.com. But with the economy the way it is, you could just show up at Charterboat Row in Key West and find plenty of cptains willing to take you out, perhaps even at a bargain price. Terry

| A: If you are heading to Northeast Florida in April, you should be right in the middle of the spring kingfish run. These open ocean predators are a blast to catch, especially on a spinning rod. And if you time it right, your might even be able to enter a local tournament. Most king mackerel contests offer cash prizes. That would be a nice added touch to your vacation! |

Would like to fish on the back waters, ie streams and rivers NOT the gulf. Could be two small boats or one for all 4. July 17 in the morning around 6:00am |
| A: You will need two boats, because most inshore guides usually only take two passengers. You will fish the back coutnry, or flats. Contact the Florida Guides Association, http://www.florida-guides.com, and they might be able to give you the names of some guides in that area. I would not recommend somebody unless I have fished with them and unfortunately, we are not a booking service. |

They can fish "The Pass" or the beaches and there is a good chance they might hook a fish or two. Contact the Boca Grande Fishing Guides Assocaition: http://www.bocagrandefishing.com/.

| A: Sorry Gareth, I don't know of any overnight charters or mini-cruises. If you want to go fishing, that is another story. Another option is renting a houseboat on the St. John's river, but you will have to drive it yourself. It does not come with a crew. Contact the Holly Bluff Marina in Deland at (800) 237-5105. |

We also would like to go fishing around the Cape Coral area either fresh or salt waters, please let me know what and where to get our out-of country fishing licences's. Thank you, Ontario, Canada. |
| A: You do not need a "boating license." Your out of state registration will suffice unless you plan to move here, then you must register your boat in Florida. As for a fishing license, one is required for both fresh and salt water. Go to www.myfwc.com. |

| Cottage Rental on the Beach |
| Asked by Susie on February 24, 2009 |
| Q: We live outside of Jacksonville. I am looking for a get away for my family. We have 2 boys, 4 and 12. My 12 year old loves to fish. Do you know of any places to rent (perferable a house/cottage) on the beach where fishing is good and a off shore charter is available? I would love some good clear water but don't want to travel to far from home. Thanks! |
| A: It all depends on how far you are willing to travel and how much you want to pay. As far as different areas of the state, I would head down to the Florida Keys. The water can be very clear and the fishing is great relatively close to shore. A google search for house rentals show that you will pay upwards of $1,000 a week. Your best bet is to contact a realtor who specializes in rental properties in the area you decide to visit. |

A: The closest place to rent a boat that you can drive yoruself is in Tierra Verde, at the southern tip of Pinellas County, near the mouth of Tampa Bay. It will take you roughly 30 minutes to drive there from Clearwater Beach, but Gulf Boulevard is quite scenic and a treat in itself. A: Pat, You are right on the money. Palm Beach is an excellent place to fish fro sailfish, especially in February. There are literally dozens of fishing guides who work the Gulf of Stream and all target sails. | Q: I will be at sarasota in the first week of April. Where is the best place to go bass fishing that is close by. i am coming from minnesota and would like to bring my own gear. Any suggestions as to what to bring. |
| A: April is a great month for bass fishing. The bass are just off the spawning beds and will be hungry and ready to feed. Sarasota has some good freshwater fishing. My top pick would be Myakka River State Park. You can fish the upper lake or the river from shore. You can't go wrong with topwater plugs, spinner baits and plastic worms. If you are fishing from the bank, keep an eye out for gators. They have some big ones. |
| Boating and Fishing in Florida |
| Asked by Andrea on February 17, 2009 |
| Q: Looking for some good deep sea fishing as well as some leisurely boating. What areas of Florida offer up the best. Coming in May09. Thanks! Andrea |
|
A: Andrea, Take your pick. Northwest Florida is beautiful in April. The fishing is great from Pensacola to the Big Bend area. There is sheltered water in the Intracoastal and the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The Tampa-St. Petersburg area also has great fishing and boater-friendly Tampa Bay. You can't beat the Florida Keys for coastal cruising or big game fishing, and the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area is still a mecca for yachties and blue-water anglers. Follow the Gulf Stream north along the coast and you will find plenty of good deep sea fishing along Florida's East Coast. So there you have it. Any where you go, you will find good boating and fishing. Now your only trouble will be making a decision. TT |

Can you recommend a charter? Really not wanting to spend more than $500. But will consider. Thanks for your help. |
| A: Your budget is pretty tight. Offshore charters burn a lot of gas, and as a result, cost mroe than inshore trips. But you might try Bud N' Mary's Marina in Islamorada. They have numerous boats that work out of there and you might find one that will fit your price range. Call 1-800-742-7945. |

| Asked by Erin Hodge on February 06, 2009 |
| Q: We are travelling to Florida i late April, early M. 3 people in our party want to do some deep sea fishing. we are not interested in chartering a boat just in buying a spot(for under $100 each) Are there any reputable companies that offer split or shared charters, or are there any boats that have just seats. I have read a couple of reviews of some of the companies online but the reviews didn't seem to be that impressive. Any advice you could give me on this subject would be very helpful, thanking you in advance.Erin Hodge |
|
A: Erin, Florida is a big state. You did not specify where you are visiting, so I guess you are open to suggestions. Most fishing captains have what is called a "six pack license" which means they can take out up to six passengers. If you are fishing offshore, one of those spots will probably be set aside for a mate. So that leaves five spots, and with the going rate for a full day charter in the range of $750 to $1,250 dollars, I doubt you will find a sboat within your budget. You are better off buying a spot on the rail of a party boat. Even then you will pay roughly $100. TT |

| A: SInce you are fishing for tarpon and bonefish, Islamorada for sure. Bud N' Mary's has plenty of guides and all of them can work the flats. If you were fishing offshore, Key West would be a better choice. But since you are fishing inshore, stay in the Upper Keys. |

| Asked by ANDY SMITH on January 29, 2009 |
| Q: Can you tel me what is planned for Bradenton between the 22nd July and the 12th August when we are on vacation. We love fishing, boat hire, beaches and resturants |
|
A: Andy, July is a great month for catch and release snook fishing. These tackle busters spawn during the summer months, so you can't keep what you catch, but they are great fighters, nonetheless. In fact, many anglers compare them to the baramundi of Australia. You can catch snook on live or artificial baits. The best time to fish is on a strong tide, incoming or outgoing, and this species tends to feed more voraciously at night. July is a great month to fish off the beach or near one of the passes. You might hook a tarpon or two while you are at it. TT |

A: Matt, There are a lot of guides in the Florida Keys. I have small cheildren, ages 5 and 7, and usually take them to cach whatever is biting. They don't have the patience for something more technical such as tarpon. Bud N' Mary's has literally dozens of guides that work out of there. | Cruising permits |
| Asked by Tim Newby on January 19, 2009 |
| Q: I would like to cruise the Florida Gulf area in my sailboat (catalina 22). I have heard that the State of Florida requires the purchase of a "cruising permit". Can you tell me if this is true or not, and if true, where would I get one. Also, if required, what is the cost of the permit?ThanksTim |
|
A: If you plan on "cruising" in Florida waters, you have 90 days to complete your trip. If you plan on staying longer than that, you will need to register the Catalina in Florida. The state gives you a three-month grace period, and after that, the state feels like you are here to stay. For more ifnormation on Florida's boating regulations, go to www.MyFWC.com.

| Q: Hi Terry, We would like to go for sea-angling during our holidays and are looking for operators that preserve the various species and are only using methods that are conformable with the principles of animal protection. Can you give a recommendation? |

| Tarpon fishing |
| Asked by howard o green on January 13, 2009 |
| Q: i plan to take a vacation , the keys, in april, tarpon fishing. what would be my best plan of action, also not the most expensive thanks a bunch |
|
A: Howard, The key to catching tarpon is sight fishing. You look for individual fish and cast to them. This means you need to have an experienced guide (or generous local) who knows where the fish are and how to approach without spooking them. You might only get a couple of shots at fish all day. The other alternative is to use dead shad and let the bait soak on the bottom. This method of fishing is frowned upon because the tarpon tend to swallow the bait and this can cause internal damage. You see tarpon fihsing is a catch and release sport. And while you may keep a tarpon (if you purchase a $50 tag) most anglers release them. So unless you are an expert angler who has spent some time on Florida waters, your best bet is to hire a guide. Count on spending at least $500 for a half day's charter. TT |

| Asked by David Sill on January 11, 2009 |
| Q: We are coming down the Tenn-Tom waterway to Florida in our sailboat next fall and were wondering where are the best anchorages and cruising grounds on the gulf side? |
| A: Your best bet is to get a couple of the Cruising Guides. Clairborne S. Young's Cruising Guide to Western Florida (Seventh Eidtion) will take you from the Big Bend area to Flamingo. There are literally hundreds of places to stop and anchor. It all depends on what type of vessel you have and whether you plan to stay on the Intracoastal or head along the coast. Captain Rick Rhodes Cruising Guide to Florida's Big Ben includes the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint and Suwannee Rivers as well. Both books are availabe from Pelican Publications. | Q: we are planning a camping trip thru the Keys for the beginning of March...will we be able to easily find "open" boats for spontaneouls fishing trips as we travel around the Keys? |
| A: March is a busy month in The Keys. You should have good fishing and good luck finding charter boat captains. You will see plenty of boats, both inshore and offshore, at the major marinas, i.e., Islamorada, Key West. If you are looking to do some specialty fishing, such as flyrodding for tarpon, book in advance. |

| A: If your boyfriend is from Montana, he has to be a fly fishermam. He is probably used to catching tiny trout on a four-weight flyrod. Why not buy him a trip with a charter boat captain who specializes in tarpon or bonefish on a flyrod. Check with the Florida Guides Association at www.florida-guides.com. A: Marvin, Not sure exactly what you are asking...Yes, the fishing is very good in Southwest Florida in March. The question is, do you want to fish for inshore species, such as trout, redfish, snook, cobia? Do you want to fish for offshore, bottom dwellers such as grouper? Or do you want to target pelagics, such as king mackerel? All are active in March. TT |
| Hobie sailing |
| Asked by martha dejaco on January 05, 2009 |
| Q: My husband and I want to take our Hobie 17 sailboat to Florida at the end of April and stay on the beach. A condo where we can pull the boat up on the beach and sail every day seems impossible to find! Has to be southern Florida as it is too cold in the Panhandle. Any ideas? |
|
A: Martha, You can sail in April in either Northwest or Northeast Florida. It all depends on where you are from, what you think is cold, and whether or not you want to wear a wetsuit. If you live in Canada and are quite fine with swiming in 60 degree water, then you should be fine most places in Florida. If you like it a little warmer, 70-degree range, move a little south. The Tampa-St. Petersburg area has great sailing in April. You have the option of either sailing in Tampa Bay or sailing in the Gulf of Mexico, depending on the wind direction. TT

| Casual fishing charter |
| Asked by gene louie on January 05, 2009 |
| Q: I am having a hard time finding a casual fishing outfit to have a few people go out and fish. Can you provide a couple of leads to charters that take people out and fish (for less than 100/person)in the Clearwater area? I fished for $35 bucks on a boat about 5 years ago and cannot remember their name of the charter? --I'm sure prices have increased, but are there any recreational fishing charters? |
| A: The going rate for an inshore charter is $350 to $400. Most inshore captains will take two customers along when they fish for trout or redfish. If you want to go offshore, the price rises dramatically. Most offshore charters start at $500 for a half day and go up from there. You will probably be able to bring three or four people with you, so that comes out to about $125 or $150 a piece. Now if you want to go on a party boat, you can find trips in the $50 range. Just head down to the Clearwater Marina. |

|
A: Peter, Now is a good time to buy a boat. I owuld look for a bay boat in the 20-23 foot range. That will give you inshore and offshore capabilities (on a good day.) If I was you, I would move, then start checking the local newspaper's classified adds. There are lots of boats out there. Take your pick. TT |

My brothers and I have a very open idea about a fishing trip to Florida in late January or February. Can you give me some ideas about what parts of state would have the best off shore fishing at that time? |
| A: The farther south you go, the mroe stable the weather. I've fished out of Key West in February when the seas were like glass. Then again, I've been there when the seas were eight foot and we couldn't get out. If I were you, I'd fish anywhere from miami to Key West. |

| Fishing Marco Island |
| Asked by Tom Larsen on December 24, 2008 |
| Q: I would like to fish the surf at Marco Island 1/23-1/31. What can I catch and how should I fish? What baits? thanks. |
| A: Fishing the waters around Marco Island in the winter time can be fun and rewarding. I assume you are talking about inshore, or flats, fishing. The water is cool, but not cold, so that means the redfish will be fairly active. On a low tide, I would suggest a topwater plug. If you have more water, I'd switch to any soft-bodied jig (weedless if you are in the grass) and work the lure slowly. The cooler the water, the slower your retrieve. |

| Q: I HAVE 2 BOYS AGES 8 AND 6, AND WOULD LOVE TO TAKE THEM CHARTER FISHING. THEY HAVE GONE BEFORE AND LOVED IT. IT MIGHT BE ALOT TO ASK BUT DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS THIS TIME OF YEAR, IDEALLY QUANITY OVER QUALITY. |
| A: Scheduling a charterboat in January is a roll of the dice. It all depends what part of the state you are talking about and which coast. Many cold fronts roll down from Canada and stall mid-state. But you can still have rough water farther south. The state averages a dozen or so strong fronts a year and each one can churn up the water for anywhere from three to four days. Your best bet is to try to schedule an inshore charter and target redfish and/or trout. |

We were using Ballyhoo to surface troll for bigger fish on the Atlantic side without success. We had two lines out in about 60 ft of water at the edge of the reef. Any tips on trolling that might provide some success. |

A: Dan,
There are so many variables about fishing., including tide, weather, time of day, water temperature, ect. Without knowing what dthe conditions were on your last trip, It is hard to say what you were doing wrong. But in general, when it is rough, go deep, when it is calm, troll higher up in the water column.

| Q: What kind of SW fishing would you recommend for the Fort Lauderdale area the end of Dec.? |

| Winter flounder |
| Asked by Jason on November 17, 2008 |
| Q: What are some tips for producing Flounder in-shore in North Florida during the cold months (Nov-Feb)? ...and do they actually leave the area for warmer waters or are they just less apt to bite? |
|
A: Jason,
Florida flounder spend the warmer months of spring and summer in the creeks and estuaries, then migrate offshore, sometimes 20 to 30 miles out, in the fall. So if you are fihsing inshore for flounder from November through February, you will probably be out of luck. Offhore, you will find these fish near structure, i.e., natrually occurring hard bottom, wrecks and artificial reefs. You can try live biat - finger mullet or mud minnows - or artificial, such as heavy soft-tailed jigs bounced off the bottom.

|
A: Snapper is a highly regulated species. The recreational red snapper season in Florida waters in the Gulf of Mexico reopens on April 15 and will remain open until Nov. 1. Florida waters extend nine nautical miles from shore in the Gulf. In 2008, the red snapper bag limit for sport anglers in the Gulf was lowered from four fish daily per person to two fish per person. In addition, the recreational red snapper fishing season in Gulf federal waters has changed and will now open on June 1 and close on Aug. 5. Gulf federal waters extend well offshore beyond state waters. The minimum harvest size for recreational red snapper in the Gulf remains unchanged at 16 inches total length. But the best bet is to check back one more time before you go becuase the rules are subject to change. |

| A: I would get a basic slatwater rod and reel combo, 12 to 15 pound test, tie on two feet of 20 to 30-pound leader and wade anyu of the grass flats south of the city. You don't need a boat, and if you stay out of fresh water, you do not need to worry about alligators. Stop at a local bait shop, buy a bucket of shrimp, and experiment free-lining the shrimp or using a float. |

| Asked by Debra Brucker on November 12, 2008 |
| Q: How do I find out if this Charter Service is Licensed. webpage www.riverrod.com . I wanted to make sure before we planned a trip.Best Regards |
| A: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issues licenses to guides so their customers don't need them. The Coast Guard issues licenses to individual captains. You can check with either agency, but be forewarned, it can be c hallenging dealing with a federal agency. |

| Q: Hi, we will be in the Keys in early April 2009, lloking to fish from bridges or of the beaches/rocks, can you point me in the right direction and also can I use spinners and lures as apposed to fresh baits? |
| A: You can uses spoons and jigs off the bridges and piers, but you will do better with live bait. Shrimp or pinfish (use a Sabiki/gold hook rig) to catch pinfish or other bait fish off the bridge and then use that as bait. I'll take live bait over artificials any day. |
| Fishing Panama City |
| Asked by Don Arseneau on November 08, 2008 |
| Q: Is there fishing in February at Panama City Beach area? |
| A: It can be a challenge fishing anywhere with cooler temepratures, because fish tend not to feed as much when it is cold as during the summer months. But if you are there between fronts, and want to fish inshroe on the grass flats, you should be able to catch trout and redfish, if you slow down your retrieve. A rule of thumb: When it is cold, slow down. |
| What's biting in February |
| Asked by Byron on November 01, 2008 |
| Q: I will be in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area from Feb 6 through Feb 15. I'm considering a charter but don't know what would be biting. Being from New England our salt water fishing season ends in Oct/Nov. Could you tell me what would be in season in Feb, and recommend a way to find a charter in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. Thank You |
|
A: If you are on the West Coast of Florida in February, you have your pick between inshore and offshore species. The grouper will be biting that time of year. You just need to time your outing for a day when the seas are calm. Another option is to fish inshore, on the shallow grass flats, with light tackle for trout and red drum. If you are looking for an offshore guide, just head down to the dock at John's Pass on Treasure Island. You will see several boats anchored up along the dock. As far as inshore guides go, contact Dogfish Tackle in Seminole. They have a variety of guides that work out of their shop. Go to their website at www.dogfishtacklecompany.com.

I will have a car and two free days to fish so any advice would be great. I have looked on the net but there is so much info I am overwhelmed so need someone to help me narrow down the possibilties. | A: I would head over to the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area and go kingfihsing. The kings ar erunning now and you will be able to catch them withing in sight of the beach. count on spending about $500 for a half day charter. |

| Surf fishing Sarasota |
| Asked by marty on October 10, 2008 |
| Q: Planning a trip and maybe relocate to Sarasota area, how is the surf fishing?? |
| A: The only time people fish in the surf, or should we say here on the Gulf Coast, off the beach, is during the summer months, when the snook are spawning. We do, however, have a lot of great wade fishing for trout, redfish and snook on the leeward side of the barrier islands and in the Intracoastal waterway. This land-based angling can be very effective, especially if you work the tides. Of all the places on the West Coast of Florida to fish by foot, Sarasota is one of the best. |

| A: Can you give me a little more information? Florida is a big state. If you live in Maimi, I think Pensacola would be a little far to drive to go fishing on a daily basis. Which coast are you looking to fish? Gulf or Atlantic? Where have you surfed fished before? Conditions are quite different here. |
| Surf fishing sarasota |
| Asked by Marty on October 02, 2008 |
| Q: Planning visit to Sarasota/Venice area and possible relocate. How is surf fishing and any hints on location?? |
| A: The west coast of Florida is not known for its surf fishing. There are times of the year (May through September) when you can catch snook off the beaches, but you are far better trying to learn how to wade fish. We have lots of grass flats here on the Gulf Coast and anglers typically wade in one- to three-feet of water, casting live bait or artificials for trout, redfish and snook. This is yoru best bet. You'll catch all the fish you want. |

| Q: We will be in Florida during Thanksgiving 08. We will travel in and out of Tampa, staying an hour North around San Antonio. We would like to do some fishing on the west coast and/or Tampa Bay. We are interested in Deep sea and off the coast. Where would be a good place to fish and what will be running? |
| A: The grouper will be in close to shore during the winter months, which means you won't have to travel as far to catch fish. King mackerel, another highly prized gamefish, will also be running. When you fish for grouper, you basically drop the line over the side and hope something hits your bait. Kingfish, however, usually hit baits trolled behind the boat. It all depends on what kinds of fishing you like do to. The two closest centers for charter boats are Tarpon Springs and Clearwater beach. In Tarpon, go to the Sponge Docks. In Clearwater, you will find the fishing boats docked at the municipal marina. |

| Fishing Fort Myers |
| Asked by David Schipper on September 24, 2008 |
| Q: I am coming to Fort Myers in late December. Want to do some deep sea fishing. What would you recommend?? Willing to spend some $$$. |
|
A: December is a hit or mis month when it comes to offshore fishing. If you can get out in between cold fronts you are fine. The grouper are close to shore and you might also catch the tail-end of the kingfish migration. Far safer though to plan for an inshore trip. Hire a backcoutnry guide to take you fishing for trout, red drum or snook. You will probably pay $350 for the day. |
| Where to go fishing |
| Asked by Lisa on September 21, 2008 |
| Q: My 2 sons (8 & 5) and I are coming to Florida in November. I would like to take them fishing. What is your recommendation. We are coming for a football tournament, bu twill have a couple of extra days. Thank you. |
| A: Florida is a big state. If your tournament is in Miami, I would not recommend fishing in Pensacola. Can you give me a little more information? In general, when fishing with youngsters, I usually recommend doing something land-based, i.e., taking them to a local fishing pier, park with a seawall etc. As far as tackle goes, a lightweight spinning rod, 8- to 12-pound test, will work and you can't go wrong with live or natural (cut) bait. Shrimp is a good choice any time of year. |
| Inshore grouper and Spanish mackerel |
| Asked by Lou Augustiniak on September 16, 2008 |
| Q: Fished before off of Big Pine Key in December and caught Spanish mackerel and small grouper from a 16 foot boat on the Atlantic side.Any suggestions with same type boat and same month with mediun to musky size rods and reels? |
| A: December is a great month for gag grouper and Spanish mackerel on the west coast of Florida. Gags, which spend most of their time in deep water, move to shallow water when the temperature drops. Spanish mackerel, a schooling fish that ventures into nearshore waters, is more of a fall/srping species. Either way, you will catch fish. |
| Canal fishing |
| Asked by Marek on September 15, 2008 |
| Q: Hello, I am from Poland (Europe) and we are comming to Florida for vacation this October. We've rented a house on Marco Island just by one of the canals. Do you think that I can catch some fish in those canals inside island? I have never been to America before and I don't know the "best practice" on theese waters. What species I can find in canals and what is the best method to catch them - float, ground, spinning, live bait - what kind??? So many questions ;-) Hope to receive answers at least for some of them. Thanks in advance. Marek |
| A: Yes, you can catch trout, redfish and snook in canals in October. I would start off with a light spiing rod, 12-pound test line, and about two feet of 20-pound test leader material. Live shrimp, suspended beneath a float, will work for all three species. |
| Where to fish around Tampa |
| Asked by Roxanne Arcement on September 10, 2008 |
| Q: I am originally from New Orleans and moved to Tampa due to Hurricane Katrina! My hubby and I miss being able to go and catch fish like at home! Where can a find a good place around Tampa, Lutz, St pete, Clearwater or surrounding areas to fish off the bank or piers and be able to bring home some fish to fry for a change? I am miserable not catching anything here! Also I would love a reccomendation of a good charter boat as well? Thank you so much! Longing to fry and eat some fish for sure! Roxanne P.S. we are planning on buying a boat soon as we lost ours in Katrina and would love a suggestion on which would be the best and also size too so we can go inland or out! Thank you! |
|
A: Ft. DeSoto, a Pinellas County Park, offers the best of both worlds: both isnhore and offshore fishing. The Bay Pier, a 500 foot structure, has good trout, redfsih and snook fishing. The Gulf Pier, a 1,000-foot structure, has excellent Spanish mackerel, kingfish and occasionally even tarpon fishing. You can also wade fish around the the causeway that leads out to the park, targeting trout, redfish and snook on the grass beds. If you have a kayak, try working the mangrove islands and oyster bars for the same species as well. As for a boat, your best bet is to get a 20-foot bay boat. That will offer you access to both inshore and offshore species. |

| Q: How you doing Terry, last time I was in Florida i was amazed by the amount of ponds, canals and lakes their is, are these all fishable, do you need permission and more important do you need a fishing license?Dave in Liverpool |
|
A: Dave in Liverpool, We have numerous public freshwater lakes and ponds. Some are naturally filled with bass; some have stock enhancement programs. Your best bet is to go to the state website for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, www.myfwc.com, and follow the links for "freshwater fishing." We also have our share of private lakes, i.e., golf courses, and ponds as well. You will need to inquire on a case-by-case basis and seek permission of the property owner before wetting a line. As for a license, yes you will need one. |

| Q: My family and I are holidaying in Florida in December, I would like to take my 11 year old son fishing but the prices I have seen on the net are a bit too much..is there any cheaper trips. Thank you |
| A: Hiring a private guide will cost you an arm and a leg. Your best bet is to buy a half-day or full-day pass on a party, or "head" boat. Count on paying anywhere between $50 and $75 per person. Prices have gone up with the price of gas. Another option is bring your own gear and go pier fishing. |
| Fish Pensacola |
| Asked by misty on July 28, 2008 |
| Q: Can you do fish around Pensacola w/out paying big bucks for a guide service? Are there appropriate spots where you can just 'drop a pole'? |
| A: You can catch fish anywhere in Florida if you are willing to get your feet wet, literally. Wade fishing is one of the most productive methods on both coasts. The key is finding sea grass beds and other "sturcture" such as oyster bars and sand bars. The bay, or intracoastal side of the islands, tend to have more protected water, ideal for sea grass beds. Target trout and redfish. Try artificials or natural bait. |

| Q: I will be in the miami area in early september and am looking to go fishing during that time. What kind of fish can I expect to catch during that time of year? |
|
A: You are coming at a good time of year. The fishing really starts to heat up at the end of September, as we move from the summer to fall pattern. You will find good snook fishing. The trout and redfish will also be biting inshore. Another possiblity is hiring a guide and heading offshore. The dolphin bite will still be on. Another option is taking the 50-mile run to Bimini. |

| A: The piers at Fort DeSoto, a Pinellas County Park, are the most kid-friendly fishing spots in the state. You have everyhting you need right there - bait shop, bathrooms and a playground nearby if the kids get bored. You can also reserve a covered pavillion to have the party. | Flyfishing Pasco County |
| Asked by John Kivlichan on July 14, 2008 |
| Q: I will be staying near Trilby during the month of February next year. What flyfishing possibilities will ther be in that area? |
| A: If you are talking about the tiny town of Trilby (Pasco County), I would head west, find the Gulf of Mexico, and wade the grass flats anywhere near Anclote Key Park (Tarpon Springs) or Honeymoon Ilsand (Dunedin). I would use some type of glass minnow or finger mullet imitation. The water will be cool, but the fish will be active. Fish the causeways, not the beach, and look for a strong incoming or outgoing tide. |
| Need a deep sea captain |
| Asked by Sandy on July 11, 2008 |
| Q: My boyfriend and I will be visiting St. Pete Beach in early September. The only request he has had is he would like to do some deep sea fishing while there. Can you recommend a good charter to book? We don't want a trip that is only us as that is to expensive. However we would like a small group of people (would prefer less than 10). Can you make any suggestions? |
|
A: There are two types of charter boats that offer a chance to fish for deep-water species. Party boats, sometimes called headboats (the name comes from the fact that the captain counts the number of "heads" on board), are your most economic alternative. A spot on one of these offshore boats can usually be secured for $50 to $150, depending on the duration of the trip. Another opition is to hire a captain to take you and your party out exclusively. Most captains have what is called a "six pack license." No, that doesn't mean a frosty beverage comes with the trip. It means that the skipper is licensed to take up to six passengers aboard his vessel. Since most captains employ a "mate," or deckhand, that leaves them with five spots aboard the boat. While the chance for catching fish aboard one of these for-hire-vessels is good, you will pay top dollar for the opportunity, thanks to sky-rocketing fuel prices. A boat with outboards can typically burn up to $500 in fuel on an offshore trip. Don't get sticker shock when you see that the going price is $750 to $1,000. So there you have it. Either pay the big bucks and fish by youselves, or go the inexpensive route and fish with a crowd. |

| Q: Hi,I will be in Florida for a conference at the IGFA in November. Can you please tell me what fishing options there are at that time of year? Thanks |
|
A: No worries my friend from Down Under, you are in luck. You will hit the major kingfish run on the east coast when you roll into town for the IGFA conference. The fishing will be good for king mackerel, even if it is blowing 20 knots. Find yourself a good captain and you might just land yourself a 40-pounder. Another option is heading out for sailfish. They are not as big as your black marlin, but a good fight nonetheless. The season usually kicks in full swing come December, but with the right skipper and bait, she'll be right. PS: I once spent a year "tramping" through New Zealand and Austrailia so I couldn't resist the Aussie slang... Seppo |
| Crazy fish |
| Asked by Briana on July 06, 2008 |
| Q: Hi, this isnt really a question about major fishing, but I was wondering if you could identify a fish that my mom and I found right near the shore in clearwater beach, Florida. I was diving around with my goggles on and I found this weird little fish buried in the sand, so I scooped him out with our net. He was brown, had spots, and he had big wing-like fins on each side with brown bands on them. He had a pointy brown dorsal fin and some spiny looking things under him, and he also had four white legs on each side, underneath his body. The fish was only about four inches long, and after getting his nose (About a cm long) stuck in the net, we let him go where he quickly went into the sand again and all I could see were his bubbly eyes. Ive never seen a fish like this before- do you have any idea what it was? I know you probably wouldnt fish for one because of its size, but Id really like to know what I caught. Thanks! -Briana |
| A: Sounds like a lot of things. Do you have a picture? |
| Diving Panama City Beach |
| Asked by Penny on July 02, 2008 |
| Q: We are visiting Panama City Beach, Florida in the first full week of October and my son, husband and nephew would like to deep sea dive. Where do you recommend that is a reasonable rate |
| A: Northwest Florida has some of the best scuba diving in Florida. You have a variety of wreck dives to choose from, but as any scuba shop will tell you, let experience and level of training dictate when, where and how you will dive. Can you furnish a little more information regarding your party? Are these seasoned veterans or recently-certified divers looking for their first open-water experience? |
| 10,000 Island adventure |
| Asked by james linn on July 01, 2008 |
| Q: locted within the 10,000 island in a spot were you can rent a boat slip and a dock over the water of shore to set up your tent and camp overnight. Do you hnow about this site. |
|
A: Most of the 10,000 Islands is located within the confines of Everglades National Park. The Rod & Gun Club in Everglades City is a good place to start your adventure, but if you plan to head into the backcountry, you will need to get a permit from the national park service. Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. You can not reserve campsites in advance. Remember, much of this area hasn't been mapped since the 1970s. Conditions change. On a recent expedition to Shark River, the mouth of the river was nearly shaled in. It took several hours, and a rising tide, to find our way out. Also, I would not recommend making a trip in anything larger than a 20-foot, shallow-draft flats boat. You will need up-to-date charts, a GPS and a tide book. Once you have studied the area, you can than choose between camp sites on land, on the beach or on a chickee, which is the platform that you spoke about. The best place to start is the National Park Service website. There are at least a half-dozen chickees int he backcountry, but not all are suited for powerboats. Check in with park officials when you pull your permit. |
