What would a day on the ocean be without manatees or sea turtles? I’ve been boating on Florida waters yet I still get a thrill every time I see on of these sea creatures in their natural environment.
Florida residents can now do their share to help these imperiled species next time they renew their boat or car registration. For just $5 boaters and anglers can purchase a sea turtle or manatee decal at their local tax collector’s office.
The money generated by these decals will go directly to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manatee and sea turtle research programs. The fees collected from the Save the Manatee and the Sea Turtle specialty license plates also help fund these efforts.
The 2010 sea turtle decal has an image of a green sea turtle and recognizes the groups and volunteers who assisted with the rescue and rehabilitation of more than 4,600 cold-stunned sea turtles this past winter. The manatee decal carries the message “Safe Travels” which is designed to remind boaters to slow down in manatee protection zones.
You can show your support for Florida’s manatees and sea turtles by purchasing the decals and license plates and proudly displaying them on your vessels or vehicles.
