Florida anglers know that a photo lasts longer than a filet. So in recent years, catch and release fishing tournaments have replaced most of the traditional events where fish are killed and weighed in at the dock.
One of the premiere events on the Gulf Coast is the Sarasota Photo All-Release Challenge. Now in its 15th year, this highly competitive event is sponsored by the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), one of the state's leading fisheries advocacy groups.
The tournament, scheduled for April 23-24, prime season for Florida fishing, will target snook, redfish and trout. Each angler will be armed with an identical box of lures or flies provided by the event organizers. Entrants will then photograph their catches with their own digital cameras.
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Grand Slam (largest snook, redfish and trout), Angler (most inches per species), Largest Fish (each species), Lady Angler (largest fish, each species), Fly Rod and Youth.
The tournament, which raises money for CCA’s conservation projects, also features an upscale raffle, a silent auction and an awards dinner on Saturday evening. Cost is $85 per angler and $30 for youth anglers (12 years old and younger). Anglers must register in advance.
