There is an old adage among sheepshead fishermen that you have to set the hook before you feel the fish bite. This seems impossible, but the top sheepshead anglers do have an uncanny ability to hook these notorious light biters under a variety of conditions.
The folks up in Jacksonville take their sheepshead fishing seriously. In fact, the members of the Jacksonville Offshore Sportfishing Club in Atlantic Beach love sheepshead fishing so much, they will be giving away a brand new jon boat and 20-horsepower motor to the angler who catches the biggest specimen at the 10th Annual El Cheapo Sheepshead Tournament on Feb. 27.
Sheepshead are often called convict fish. It could be because their body stripes resemble those of an old-time prison uniform. Then again, it could be because these pier dwellers have uncanny knack for stealing bait.
Whatever the case, it costs just $60 for the chance to win one of two boats, motors and trailers (first and second places), as well as cash prizes for third through 15th. For more information, contact the Jacksonville Offshore Sportfishing Club.
