Last week, I blogged about the loggerhead sea turtles being named Florida's Official Saltwater Reptile. I thought I'd follow up with some information about how much effort goes into protecting the loggerhead in Florida, along with some good news results.
Recently, 140 young loggerhead sea turtles were returned to the wild near Sebastian, Florida. They had been held in captivity for two years, and participated in tests designed to help fishermen catch fewer turtles by accident in their nets and long lines.
The turtles had been captured as hatchlings during Hurricane Katrina's pounding of the Florida coast. Laurin Sellers of the Orlando Sentinel wrote a great article about the loggerhead turtle release that you might find interesting. It includes a great video clip of the turtles being released. I have attended turtle releases and I can tell you that they are very happy events. I can only imagine the excitement surrounding the release of these 140 beautiful sea turtles. |
