You probably knew that Florida's official state flower is the orange blossom, the state tree is the sabal palm and the state bird is the mockingbird, but do you know what the official Florida shell is?
It's the horse conch (Triplofusus giganteus). A conch is a mollusk - an animal that makes its own shell. This large predatory mollusk glides along the bottom of the gulf and bay waters looking for other shells to eat. It can grow to about two feet in length, although most specimens found are a foot or less in length.
The horse conch was selected as the official state shell of Florida in 1969. |
