For the new year, let's get down and dirty - well, at least let's get IN THE DIRT.
IN THE DIRT is an archaeology lecture series hosted by the Florida Public Archaeology Network and Brevard Community College in Melbourne. The first lecture for is Thursday, Jan. 15 on "American Florida: Pioneers of the Peninsula."
Tim Brock, Outreach Coordinator for the East Central Region of the FPAN, takes a look at the independent spirit of Florida's coming of age; from Andrew Jackson's acquisition of Florida from Spain through Reconstruction and America's first incorporated black community.
Lectures are free and registration is not required. All lectures will be held at 7 p.m. in Building 7, room 115, Melbourne Campus of Brevard Community College. Call (321) 433-5042 from more information. I went to one of these in 2008 and really enjoyed it.
If the inner archaeologist in you is yearning to dig deeper, you might enjoy reading my VISIT FLORIDA story on being your own Indiana Jones.
Upcoming talks by different speakers in the "IN THE DIRT" series include "Weeds and Seeds: A History of Dining in Southern Florida" on Feb. 19; "Exploring Florida Shipwrecks" on March 19 and "Beneath the Surface: Exploring Florida's Pond Cemeteries" on April 16. |
