Hands On Fun at Imaginarium in Fort Myers
August 07, 2008
Imagine a place that takes the concept of Show and Tell really seriously. Such a place is Imaginarium Hands On Museum and Aquarium in Fort Myers, where experience for all ages is 100 percent interactive. Parent and grandparents will like it. Kids will love it.

In the Hurricane Experience, visitors sit inside a chamber and wear goggles. Then the wind begins, hurricane force! Those standing outside, like me, saw everyone's hair blowing off to one side and everyone was laughing.

Science is demonstrated in different ways - balls going down a chute showing gravity, magnets attracted to one another. There are two floors of exhibits exploring the sciences, arts and humanities. I liked the Discovery Drawers where you pull out drawers and find cool things like seashells.

On the aquarium side, visit the "Sea to See" Touch Tank and actually handle sea creatures. In a separate wing called Animal Lab, there are live animals and aquarium tanks. I really liked the spotted Morey eel, who came out from behind a rock and looked at me. It is the first spotted Morey I'd ever seen.

Outside is a large pond area with an overlook. A white swan graced the scene and swimming below the surface, near the swan, were the biggest koi I'd ever seen.

Every day there are Hands-on Fun shows at 11 and 2 p.m. along with educational films every half hour shown in the Theater-In-the-Tank.

On Saturday, Aug. 23, from 11-4 p.m. Imaginarium celebrates its 13th birthday bash with live animal demonstrations, a showing of the 3-D DIVE! Manned Submersibles and New Explorers movie, live clown skits, a stingray feeding, face painting, make-and-take projects and birthday cake, plus all of the museum's exciting interactive exhibits. The day of the Birthday Bash, the museum is offering free admission for kids with a paid adult admission ($8, $7 for seniors). The first 300 children to arrive receive a free giveaway.

Imaginarium is located in downtown Fort Myers at 2000 Cranford Ave. It is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
