May Has Arrived - Let the Festivals Begin
May 02, 2008
May has arrived. The weather is perfect. If there ever was a time to take a day trip, this is it. Need another excuse? There are a lot of festivals coming up and you are invited.

Let the festivals begin. Amelia's Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, May 2,3, and 4 is a full course feast in downtown Fernandina Beach. This is the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry and it is a reason to celebrate.

Lots of shrimp, lots of pirates, live entertainment and their famous art show with more than 300 artists and craftspeople with booths lining Centre Street and side streets. Downtown Fernandina Beach is closed to traffic  during the Festival and wide open for pedestrians. The festival web site has hours and event schedule. This historic North Florida town has been doing the Shrimp Festival for 45 years so they know how to party in style.

Delray Beach celebrates Cinco de Mayo Festival on Saturday, May 3 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Old School Square. Arts and crafts, live mariachi bands, dance performances, traditional foods and the not-to-be-missed Second Annual Chihuahua Race. Admission is $10 for adults, children under five admitted free to the Festival.  See this Web site for more details, including how to enter the Chihuahua Race.

Saturday, May 17 is a big day to celebrate the fruits of the season. In Arcadia (near Port Charlotte in Southwest Florida), appetites are getting ready for the Arcadia Watermelon Festival. Island Grove (near Gainesville in Central Florida) has their Blueberry Festival the same day and Newberry (northwest of Gainesville) also celebrates their 63rd Annual Watermelon Festival on May 17. Let's hear it for blueberries and watermelons!

I feel a day trip coming on . . .
